Carlos Alcaraz can be 'nearly impossible to beat' according to former Atp world no. 1, Mats Wilander, who sees his incredible potential.
Alcaraz is already one of the best players in the world as he'll look to win his third Grand Slam trophy on Sunday at the 2024 Roland Garros. The Spaniard is only 21 years old, so he's far from his peak, and that's scary for his opponents.
If he's this good right now, then how good will he be at his peak? That's a good question, but it is very hard to answer. Wilander is convinced that he can be near unbeatable at his peak, which could be true.
At moments, he's near unbeatable right now, and he's not even close to his peak. According to Wilander, who spoke to Eurosport, the key to winning is realizing that he doesn't have to play flashy.

Carlos Alcaraz made history on Friday as he reached his first Roland Garros final with a five-set win over Jannik Sinner.
The Spaniard took a while before he demonstrated his all-court excellence, fending off the challenge of incoming World No. 1 Sinner in a four-hour battle that required the full five sets.
Alcaraz recovered from a 2-6, 0-2 deficit to beat Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. It was his fifth win in nine meetings against the Italian, and he now has a positive head-to-head record against him.
But this was more than just heading the series. Alcaraz will contest his first Roland Garros final on Sunday against Alexander Zverev, who saw off an ailing Casper Ruud in the second semifinal.
Firstly, Alcaraz continues to follow the great track record of Spanish male players in excelling on the Parisian clay. He will look to join his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and childhood idol,...

Jannik Sinner will become world number one after the 2024 Roland Garros, and former legendary player Mats Wilander thinks he'll be number one for a very long time.
The way the Italian player finished last season made many of his rivals realize that he was taking the next step in his career. He elevated his level, won a couple of trophies, and just looked primed to take his game to an even higher level.
That's what happened in Australia, where he won his maiden Grand Slam trophy this year, and he's still playing at that level. He's in the Roland Garros semi-final, which ensured he became the new world number one on Monday.
According to former player Wilander, who spoke to Eurosport, he'll stay there for a while but not in one go because Carlos Alcaraz will likely insert himself in that equation. Nevertheless, Sinner is very worthy of that number-one rank.

Jannik Sinner has received enormous praise from his coach Darren Cahill, who compared him to tennis greats Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.
The 22-year-old Italian has enjoyed his best season on tour in which he won his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto and ascended to a career-high ranking of World No. 4. Sinner's stellar year culminated with a historic Davis Cup triumph which catapulted him into Italian tennis folklore.
His coach Cahill has witnessed Sinner's development at a soaring pace in 2023. In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the 58-year-old highlighted Sinner's adaptability as his greatest strength and something that has impressed him the most.
Cahill drew parallels to the careers of Bjorg and Wilander, former Grand Slams champions. While Sinner is still relatively young and in the early phase of his career, the Australian believes he is already mature at his age because of his vast intelligence and competitive abilities.

Holger Rune was hilariously mistaken for Casper Ruud during his quarterfinal match at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
There have been multiple great tennis players from Scandinavia competing on the Atp Tour over the years, but funnily enough, they all came from Sweden. Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, and Stefan Edberg were enormously successful, but in the 21st century, we haven't seen a successful Scandinavian for a long time.
That's why it was also a bit surprising when two major talents emerged from the region at the same time, and on top of that, none of them was from Sweden. Holger Rune is arguably the best male tennis player to ever come from Denmark, while the same applies to Casper Ruud in Norway.

Former Wta player and current Eurosport tennis expert Barbara Schett showered praise on Novak Djokovic in the wake of his US Open win and says Carlos Alcaraz has a long way to go.
Djokovic was projected to meet Alcaraz in the 2023 US Open final, but the final that many expected and wanted never materialized as Daniil Medvedev authored a semifinal upset to end the young Spaniard's title defense , and put himself in contention to challenge Djokovic.
In a repeat of the 2021 US Open final, Djokovic avenged that loss , and he was looser and fitter than an opponent who was almost a decade younger. After three hours and 17 minutes, it was the indefatigable Serbian who completed the full dissection of Medvedev to earn a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles crown.
Speaking after the match, Schett told Eurosport there is the likelihood Djokovic's numbers will not be repeated, adding the colossal work...

Iga Swiatek will lose her number one rank on the Wta Tour officially in a few days, and Mats Wilander believes it will do her good.
This year has been quite stressful for Iga Swiatek, who had to do much defending this year. After having an incredible year in 2022, Swiatek was faced with the prospect of defending many of those trophies and points.
She didn't do the best job, but she got a big one in Paris at the 2023 Roland Garros . Barely, but still got it done. After crashing out of the US Open and ensuring the loss of the number one rank, Swiatek released a few thoughts about defending in tennis, something she was asked about weekly in the previous months.
It was rather clear that she was fed up with the constant questions about it which is why Wilander thinks the loss might be the best thing for her tennis.

Former Atp No. 1 Mats Wilander gave a fascinating insight into the influence that celebrated American coach Brad Gilbert has had on Coco Gauff 's explosive form during the US swing.
After losing her first-round match at this year's Wimbledon , Gauff was under massive pressure to ditch her parents' advice in favor of outside counsel as part of her coaching team. At the start of the US swing, that certainly to be the case, where Gauff called on the services of Gilbert , who has previously coached some of tennis' iconic names.
In addition to her full-time coach Pere Riba, whom Gauff appointed earlier in June to replace Diego Moyano, Gilbert was sought after by the 19-year-old on a trial basis, and the impact has been instantaneous. Gauff won the two biggest titles of her career this month, including a Wta 1000 in Cincinnati .

Carlos Alcaraz is already enjoying his fourth stint as the highest-ranked player on the Atp Tour, but how does he compare to the tennis greats?
When the young Spaniard won the 2022 US Open, he became the youngest man ever to become the world number one . Since then, he has lost the spot because of injuries, but also because of Novak Djokovic's dominance early in the season.
After the two players traded the top spot multiple times, Alcaraz started his reign again on June 26th, 2023 , and he has kept the spot since then. Djokovic had a chance to retake it during the 2023 Wimbledon final , but since he lost, it's the 20-year-old who sits atop also now.
That means that Alcaraz spent already 30 weeks as the highest-ranked player on the Atp Tour, and the number is excepted to increase even further, but where does he rank right now among all men that reached the world no.

Carlos Alcaraz is one very special tennis player and you only need to inspect some stats from his rather young career to see it.
You don't really have to know tennis history in depth to understand how special Carlos Alcaraz truly is. The fact that he's being mentioned regularly among the Big Three is proof enough that his stuff is that of a special type.
Alcaraz, in many ways, does resemble the Big Three because the things he's been able to do so early in his career are not the norm. There are very few tennis players who did that, which is easily demonstrated through various milestones.
He's the youngest number one ever on the Atp Tour, which is incredible, he's also the 5th youngest to ever win two Grand Slams. The second one happened recently in London as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final to get it done.

Sweden's number one player on the Atp Tour, Mikael Ymer has been suspended from tennis for 18 months after a complicated situation resolved badly for him.
Ymer has been Sweden's top player for a while, even though he has been nowhere near the Top 10 as the country struggles to replicate some of the historic success it had with players like Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.
Ymer is currently ranked number 51 with a pretty decent season behind though not one devoid of controversy. Earlier this year, the Swede made headlines after being defaulted from a match due to breaking his racquet onto the umpire's chair and damaging it.
He was heavily fined for that , and now he's out of tennis after a sequence of events that ultimately resulted in a suspension from the sport. Ymer explained the story with a long post on Twitter , and we will bring you a breakdown of the situation.

London, July 17 (Ians) Carlos Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero has revealed the key to his protege’s quick adaptation to playing on grass and said he and Alcaraz took elements from the playing styles of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer heading into the tournament.

Novak Djokovic contested the 2023 Wimbledon Championships final against Carlos Alcaraz, and Mats Wilander talked about it following the conclusion of the match.
Wilander closely followed the final as part of his job as a tennis analyst and like many, he was quite stunned that Carlos Alcaraz got it done. The Spaniard produced a really strong effort to beat Djokovic in five sets and win the 2023 Wimbledon Championships .
It wasn't the best match from Djokovic, even though he started it impressively. The final set was particularly annoying to Djokovic as he had early break points which he failed to convert, only to get broken soon after that.
He actually slammed his racquet on the net post in frustration , something that earned him plenty of boos from the crowd. Wilander talked about that situation pointing out how much Djokovic cares about winning matches.

Carlos Alcaraz proved to be great once more by beating Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final, and Rafael Nadal congratulated him on the win.
When Alcaraz arrived in London a few weeks ago, he expressed serious doubts about possibly beating Novak Djokovic on grass . He described it as something less likely to happen compared to other surfaces. Even so, Alcaraz didn't become the youngest number one on the Atp Tour ever simply by being a solid tennis player.
He became it by being a generational talent whom Mats Wilander called the most exciting tennis player to ever walk a tennis court. That's very high praise for a teenager but he's been proving the Swede right. After losing to Djokovic in Paris due to cramps, Alcaraz followed up on his promise and delivered a different outcome this time around .

The No. 1 position has changed hands between Alcaraz and Djokovic six times already in 2023, the most in a season since 2018 (seven), with the Spaniard most recently reclaiming top spot after lifting his first grass-court Atp Tour title at The Queen’s Club just under three weeks ago.

Former player Gary Lineker had only great things to say about Carlos Alcaraz , and Mats Wilander agreed with the footballer.
Carlos Alcaraz is one special talent, so much so that even those that aren't active in tennis can recognize it. He caught the attention of NBA superstar Jimmy Butler who watched and met Alcaraz in Miami . The American also made his way to Wimbledon to watch him play recently, and he's not the only one. Former football player Gary Lineker is another athlete amazed by Alcaraz.
Lineker was never a tennis player but the former football legend has a keen interest in sports. One of those sports is tennis and he's been a regular at Wimbledon for many years. The Englishman heaped praise on Alcaraz after his most recent performances at Wimbledon comparing him to some of the greatest footballers to ever play the game.

Carlos Alcaraz expressed some serious doubt about his level on grass leading up to Wimbledon but it's actually been really good.
Carlos Alcaraz is one talented tennis player, and while many argue that talent is not everything and can only take you so far, it can actually take you pretty far. Alcaraz is proving it this year with his performances on grass, a surface where he doesn't feel that comfortable .
He's a fast learner, so learning how to play on the surface quickly is hardly a surprise, but when you watch him play, it's clear that he still has a long way to go. The greatness of his talent is good enough to push him past many players, including fellow rising stars on the Atp Tour.
He's in the semi-final, where he'll play against Daniil Medvedev for a place in the Wimbledon final. It's only his 3rd Wimbledon, and possibly...

Novak Djokovic kicked off what might end up being his 8th title-winning campaign at Wimbledon and Mats Wilander could see a couple of more.
Djokovic started off his 2023 Wimbledon campaign with a win over Pedro Cachin and if he scores six more wins he'll end up as champion. It would be the 8th Wimbledon trophy for him equalling Roger Federer 's iconic tally. Djokovic is certainly confident that things will work out well.
Not many expected anybody to catch Roger Federer but Djokovic has a chance to do so. Mats Wilander could easily see him move past the Swiss legend to end up with nine or ten. It's not a particularly long way to that number making it more likely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Djokovic ends up with nine or 10. So Roger better hold this record of eight close to his heart for now. If it’s not...

No signs of illness for Iga Swiatek as she started her 2023 Wimbledon campaign with an emphatic victory over Lin Zhu in two sets.
Iga Swiatek is the top seed at Wimbledon and she played the first match in line with her status. The Polish player is apparently not a great player on grass but she's certainly better than a lot of other players even with the lack of experience.
There weren't any expectations for the grass season this year as she simply approached it with the desire to learn as much as possible and get better on it. Her game fits the surface well as Mats Wilander predicted her to end up with multiple Wimbledon trophies if she keeps her level of play. Her only preparation event was the Bad Homburg Open, Wta 250 tournament, where she put together a decent run .

Former player and current analyst Mats Wilander thinks that Novak Djokovic faces a good amount of pressure in a bid to separate himself from Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
The Serbian recently became the first man to ever win 23 Grand Slams . He might add number 24 at Wimbledon with many considering him the top favourite. After all, there are many incredible stats backing that up.
Besides winning the four previous editions of Wimbledon comfortably, Djokovic also has more wins at the event than the rest of the Top 20 combined . For the former player Wilander, he's the overwhelming favourite to win.
To me, Novak Djokovic goes in as the big favourite. And the reason that I think he's the big favourite is that I still haven't seen anyone who is as solid as Novak from the baseline that serves as well as Novak.
Carlos Alcaraz is among those that could challenge him...

Iga Swiatek wasn't that comfortable on the grass in the past but she's slowly finding her groove on the surface ahead of Wimbledon .
Swiatek has never been the best player on grass as she didn't really play that much on the surface. She did win the Wimbledon junior trophy in 2018 but playing in juniors and professionals is very different. By the time she got to the professionals on the Wta Tour, she faced players who have dozens of matches on the grass and it showed.
She's doing a bit better this year making her maiden quarter-final on the grass at the 2023 Bad Homburg Open . It comes after a solid win over Teichmann and you can slowly see the confidence in her game and in her comments start to show.
I'm pretty happy that I have the opportunity to play more matches here and for sure today was a good day.

Former legendary player Mats Wilander truly believes that Andy Murray has what it takes to win Wimbledon once more.
Andy Murray dreams of winning Wimbledon. Even though he won't come out and say it publicly it's pretty clear that the Brit feels like he has enough for one more. He started well on the grass this year but stumbled the first time he faced a very good player .
In fairness, he was pretty tired of trying to get himself to be a seed at the even t which he failed to do ultimately. It's going to make his draw tougher but even then many assume that Sir Andy could get it done. It would be an incredible story. Ivanisevic's win at Wimbledon inspired a film, imagine what this would do.
When asked about the possibility, Eurosport's Tim Henman said that he doesn't see it . Fellow pundit John McEnroe wouldn't...

Iga Swiatek 's record on grass surfaces has been defended by Mats Wilander, who also feels the Polish player can win multiple Wimbledon titles.
In 2023, Swiatek has cemented her place at the top of the Wta Rankings following a third career Roland Garros title in June. The win followed another clay court victory at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and a hard court victory at the Qatar Open earlier in the 2023 season.
Yet, the world number one's record on grass is less impressive, as Swiatek has won just five of her 11 previous matches before the in-progress Bad Homburg Open. However, when speaking to Eurosport , seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander said Swiatek's grass record should not hold back the 22-year-old's all-around tennis talent, nor her ability to win Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic is currently focusing on Wimbledon, and those thoughts might get occupied with the 'Calendar Slam' if he wins at Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic won both grand slams this year so far. He's likely to win Wimbledon simply because he's won it 7 times so far and his Roland Garros run proved that he's still the best against the current tennis landscape. That only gets amplified on grass because there will be only one player in London that has ever beaten him on a grass court before .
If he does win Wimbledon, he'll be only the US Open away from completing the calendar grand slam - something that hasn't been done since Rod Laver. He's not thinking about it right now but he's certainly capable of doing so according to his own coach Goran Ivanisevic.
Another former coach Boris Becker warned him against repeating the mistake he did the last time...

Former player Ilie Nastase believes that Rafael Nadal 's 14 Roland Garros wins are a harder achievement than Novak Djokovic 's 23 Grand Slams.
Comparing things in sports is very difficult to do because sports are fluid and it's never the same thing. Even the same sport changes from year to year and in tennis and on the Atp Tour particularly, the change is constant.
What happens one year rarely happens the other year so it's very hard to compare players, eras, and achievements. Yet it's been done because people like to compare things, whether it's sports, jewelry, cars, or phones.

New Delhi, June 6 (Ians) Former Swedish tennis star Mats Wilander believes that young tennis sensation Holger Rune is destined to achieve Grand Slam triumphs in the coming years, following his remarkable ascent up the Atp rankings over the past year and a half.

Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled off a mind-boggling shot at Roland Garros while defeating Diego Schwartzman.
An extraordinary spectacle unfolded at the 2023 Roland Garros, when the talented Greek pulled out one of the rarest shots in the world of tennis. The ever-creative Tsitsipas showcased a dazzling demonstration of precision and creativity during his third-round encounter against Diego Schwartzman.
The moment of magic? An unthinkable around-the-net backhand winner that left spectators, commentators, and Tsitsipas himself, absolutely spellbound. It was just one of the shots that led the Greek to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win, but surely the most remembered one.
From the deep trenches of the court, Tsitsipas visualized and materialized a stroke that defied the very geometry of the game. With the ball well off-court and the net standing tall, one could only anticipate a defensive lob.
But Tsitsipas, who now spent 200 weeks in the Top 10 on the Atp Tour, had other ideas.

Tennis has been starving for a real superstar for a while now and seemingly it is going to be Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.
Being a tennis fan in the past twenty years was a very good deal because every now and then you would get an iconic match thanks to the big three. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been the dominant force in tennis for the better part of the last two decades yet recently we've seen an influx of young players.
Most of them are pretty good but a lot of them lack what's needed to be a proper superstar. Either the style is not exciting enough or the consistency is not there or even the skill is not there. Enter Carlos Alcaraz. A super flashy player with a lot of aggressiveness and spectacular shot-making with pretty good consistency. He's comfortably cruising towards the status of a tennis superstar.

Iga Swiatek will be the number one seed at Roland Garros but her victory isn't as certain as it was some 12 months ago.
Nobody was really surprised when Iga Swiatek won the 2022 Roland Garros because she had been winning trophies all season long. By the time she arrived in Paris, Swiatek had already won Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome.
This year she arrives to Paris with only Doha and Stuttgart wins, and injury concerns after retiring against Rybakina in Rome. She's still a sensational player but the rise of others makes this event quite important.
Besides being a Grand Slam, Swiatek also faces the prospect of losing her number-one rank though it doesn't seem to bother her. However, what bothers Mats Wilander is the Pole's injury as he revealed when talking to Eurosport.
With Iga the one thing you have to be slightly worried about is the physical part of tennis.

For much of his career, Novak Djokovic has battled Rafael Nadal with their career pretty much overlapping since the start.
Djokovic has named Nadal his greatest rival more than once and they had some epic battles over the years on the Atp Tour. At Roland Garros, it was Nadal who dominated the matchup which is why Djokovic joked about not missing him this year.
This year will see him compete at Roland Garros alone and it's something he will need to get used to. Mats Wilander suggested that Nadal's absence hasn't disappointed anybody more than Djokovic and in a way it makes sense. It makes even more sense when you look at what he said about the retirement announcement.
When he announced that he's going to have the last season of career, you know, I felt part of me is leaving with him too, if you know what I mean.

Novak Djokovic had his Roland Garros press conference and he joked about not missing Rafael Nadal in the draw.
Djokovic and Nadal have played some epic matches over the course of their careers with a few happening at Roland Garros. Djokovic's win over Nadal from two years ago was utterly impressive and a perfect revenge for the defeat a year earlier.
Mats Wilander recently claimed that Djokovic is disappointed by Nadal's absence from Roland Garros however Djokovic joked that it's not true. Striking a somewhat serious tone in the next sentence, Djokovic did admit that seeing him in the draw makes things harder for him which isn't something he looks forward to.
Well, honestly, I don't miss him being in the draw, you know, (smiling). You know, I don't like seeing him in the draw of Roland Garros, to be honest, you know. I have had not so much success...

Mats Wilander believes that Rafael Nadal's absence from Roland Garros has left Novak Djokovic disappointed.
It's a curious way to phrase things as most players would be probably relieved that Nadal is not playing at Roland Garros. No player has been as dominant at the event as Nadal has been in the past and he actually defeated Djokovic at last year's event.
That's what makes this Wilander comment so interesting even though Djokovic himself described Nadal missing the event as not the ideal outcome. For Wilander, it's mostly down to the competitiveness of such legendary players and the fact that Djokovic could have beaten Nadal on the court while taking the 23rd away from him.
I think that in a way, you're disappointed maybe more than anything that you don't get to play Rafa somewhere. And I would think for Novak Djokovic, he’s most probably the most disappointed player in the whole tournament.

Holger Rune defeated Casper Ruud in three sets at the 2023 Italian Open booking his second Atp Masters final on clay this year.
Rune and Ruud played a couple of times already and this was the first time the Dane was able to defeat the Norwegian. It was a really entertaining match with some drama on top of great play by both players with Rune emerging victorious.
Their rivalry is more than your typical one because they exchanged some words after their match in Paris last year. Rune was looking for a more friendly match overall this time around because he doesn't see a point in dwelling on the conflict from last year but the medical timeout drama didn't sit well with Ruud.
After the match, Rune was asked about their previous conflict and similarly to his semifinal opponent, he said that things are now well. The two have talked about...

New Delhi, April 24 (Ians) Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has said he is not planning to take over from Rafael Nadal and intends to build his “own history”.
Alcaraz capped a perfect week at the Barcelona Open on Sunday by outplaying Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 with a high-quality championship match display at the Atp 500 and claimed his ninth tour-level crown and third of the season.
The Spaniard’s remarkable achievements at a young age have led to comparisons with Nadal, who like Alcaraz, clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the age of 19.
“As I’ve always said on more than one occasion, I don’t want to take over from anyone. I feel lucky to have so many people supporting me behind me, transmitting that positive energy from the first game,” Alcaraz was quoted by Eurosport.
“Speaking of this week, it’s been two years that Rafa hasn’t been there,...

Boris Becker revealed that Novak Djokovic gets motivated when the crowd supports his opponent more than him.
The German used to coach Djokovic for a time and he knows him pretty well. The Serb considers him a friend and called him and spoke in his favour during his trial last year that sent him to prison for a few months. Djokovic being emotional is nothing new, we've seen it numerous times but Becker provided more insight into his personality.
Novak is very emotional. He always gets temperamental when the crowd supports the other guy. And he's using that to show with his fingers off into the crowd that you have woken me up now. I'm going to beat this guy.
Sometimes it works out in the favour of Djokovic because fur much of his career he wasn't the crowd favourite. There are very few places where he would get more...

Former player and current analyst Mats Wilander believes that Carlos Alcaraz has the ability to change the history of tennis.
It happened a few times in the past with several players over the years. Most notably it happened with Roger Federer whose tennis being the model for many young players coming up in the years since including Alcaraz. Wilander believes that Alcarz has the same talent and that his impact will be huge.
After Medvedev beat Djokovic two years ago at the US Open, we thought it would be him who would take charge of tennis. But it hasn't been like that because Novak and Nadal are still there and winning. Alcaraz can be the tennis player who decides the future history of our sport.
The Spaniard possesses tremendous talent with a vast array of shots and ways to win a point. He is super quick on the court and moves really well.
