Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) Joe Root became the first cricketer to score a double century in his 100th Test when the England captain reached the milestone in the second session of the second day in the first Test against India at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
The previous best score in the 100th Test belonged to former Pakistan batsman Inzamam ul Haq who hit 184, also against India in Bengaluru in 2005.
Root reached his double ton with a six over long-on off the bowling of R Ashwin.
This was Root's fifth double century and he is joint second among England players to have hit most double tons. Former teammate and England Test skipper Alastair Cook also has five double centuries. Wally Hammond has seven.
Root is also only the ninth batsman to slam a century in his 100th Test.
Colin Cowdrey (104 vs Australia in 1968), Javed Miandad (145 vs India in 1989), Gordon Greenidge (149 vs England...

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) England skipper Joe Root on Friday became the ninth batsman to slam a century in his 100th Test, on Day One of the first Test against India here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium. It was the 10th instance of this feat occurring as former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is the only batsman to score centuries in both innings of his 100th Test, against South Africa in 2006.
Root brought up his 20th century off 164 balls, with the help of 12 boundaries. This was his third century in as many Tests, with earlier two coming in Sri Lanka in the previous series that England won 2-0, just before the team reached India for this series.
Root also became only the third cricketer to play both his first and 100th Test match in the same country he was touring. Root had made his debut in Nagpur in 2012 when England won the...

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) Joe Root on Friday became the 15th England cricketer to play 100 Test matches for his country. He achieved the feat during the first Test of the four-match series against India here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
Before the start of the first Test where England opted to bat, Root had scored 8,249 runs in 99 Test matches, including 19 hundred and 49 half-centuries. He is the fourth-highest Test scorer for England, only behind Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart.
Incidentally, Root became only the third cricketer to play both his first and 100th Test match in the same visiting country. Root had made his debut in India in 2012 in a series which England won 2-1.
Karl Hooper and Kapil Dev are the other two cricketers to make their Test debut and 100th Test in the same visiting country. While Kapil made his debut and played his 100th Test both in Pakistan,...

Chennai, Feb 4 (Ians) The first Test against India, beginning here on Friday, will mark the 100th Test for England captain Joe Root, who will reach the milestone ahead of the other members of the 'Big Four' Test batsmen -- Virat Kohli (87 Tests), Steve Smith (77), and Kane Williamson (83).
Root, who will become England's 15th batsman to play a century of Tests, is just 214 runs behind Alec Stewart's career aggregate of 8,463 runs and this series will most probably see him overtake the former England captain to become the third highest run-getter for his country.
The right-handed batsman is coming off a successful series in Sri Lanka where he scored 426 runs in two Tests and England's chances, if they are to do well in India, will hinge on him once again.
The 30-year-old called his debut Test the best moment of his life, something he recalls when he needs an inspiration.

Galle, Jan 23 (Ians) England captain Joe Root went past former opener Geoffrey Boycott on the list of top run-getters for England here on Saturday. Root, who was unbeaten on 67 after the end of the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka, has moved to 8,119 runs and is now five runs clear of Boycott, who retired a long time ago.
Root, who is now the sixth highest run-getter for England, could easily move to third spot by the time England's four-Test tour of India ends in March. He needs 345 more runs to topple Alec Stewart from the third position.
Former England captain Alastair Cook is the all-time highest run-getter for England with 12,472 Test runs against his name. He is followed by Graham Gooch, who has 8,900 runs. Alec Stewart, David Gower and Kevin Pietersen are the others ahead of Root.
This was Root's 50th Test half-century. He now has 296 runs...

March, 2011: After their rights to the source material elapse after a failed four year venture, Paramount officially drop their in-development film Dune, ending a frustrating and ultimately fruitless effort that served better as a topic of heated discussion than an actually feasible movie.
Such an announcement had been on the cards, and the prospect rightly feared for months. Aside from the consensus that Frank Herbert’s epic, 1965 science fiction chef-d’oeuvre will never again make it to the big screen, the proposed project was in a state of flux from the moment it appeared on the radar, with each change of personnel seeing the release date pushed further and further back.
The ‘film’ still has its own page on IMDb, albeit a rather scarce one. There is a name, the year 2014, but no director, no writer, no other entries. Aside from providing a portal to forum conversation about casting and narrative focus,...

England ended up 127 for two after a damp and cagey first day of play, with Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 58
Morning everyone. How are you feeling this morning? Palms a little moist? Brow a touch fevered? Thoughts about the respective merits of Tim Bresnan and Stuart Broad inexplicably dominating your inner monologue? It's time, at last. The 2000th Test, the 100th between England and India, and the most eagerly anticipated match in
this country outside of an Ashes series since the West Indies were in their pomp a whippersnapper's lifetime ago.
This being the proper start of the summer it's probably worth checking the weather. A quick look outside the window from the top floor of Guardian Towers eastwards across the cityscape shows a solid gray morass of cloud, stretching from here to eternity St John's Wood. We might not start on time but the weathermen say that we'll get plenty of play,...
