A prequel story to 2019’s Disney live-action movie, The Lion King, is upon us. The movie tells us the story of Mufasa, Simba’s father, and his journey to become the king of the jungle. Mufasa: The Lion King will be helmed by director Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame, unlike Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 feature, with Donald Glover and Beyoncé returning to voice Simba and Nala, respectively.

For the Oscar winner, this Walt Disney production was quite different from the kind of movies he usually makes. And if not for Jeff Nathanson’s script, which had him hooked from the beginning, Jenkins could have almost said no to the project.

It’s time to head back to the Pride Lands in Barry Jenkins’ Lion King prequel. Watch the first Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
The Lion King, released in 2019, proved to be a controversial one. While early reactions praised the film’s visual effects, others found fault in its all-cgi creatures. Really, it was a strange move from Disney to call it a live-action version of such a beloved classic when it was all created on a computer screen.
Regardless, the film has spawned a prequel, and Moonlight director Barry Jenkins signed on to direct what we now know is called Mufasa.
Take a look at the Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
It certainly looks like it’s going to be more of the same, so if you weren’t a fan of 2019’s The Lion King, something tells us this might be a miss for you too.

It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

Walt Disney Pictures brought the Pride Lands to Sin City. The studio unveiled footage of “Mufasa: The Lion King” at their CinemaCon panel this Monday, showcasing Barry Jenkins’ prequel of the 2019 “Lion King” remake.
Jenkins accompanied the film to Las Vegas at CinemaCon, and he explained to the crowd, “what the director of ‘Moonlight’ is doing here to tell me about an 8-quadrant legacy film.” Well, he said making it was “one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.”
A photorealistic CGI film in the vein of the 2019 film, “Mufasa: The Lion King” will focus on the ascension of Mufasa (voiced in the prequel by “The Underground Railroad” star Aaron Pierre) to the ruler of the Pride Lands. Kelvin Harrison Jr. will also star as Scar, along with Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner, and John Kani all reprising their roles from the 2019 “Lion King” as Pumbaa, Timon, and Raifiki,...

Ilia Malinin’s record-setting night in Montreal over the weekend was fueled by music from an award-winning show he had never watched.
The 19-year-old American won his first men’s World Figure Skating Championship title Saturday with the theme music to HBO’s hit series Succession playing during his free skate routine, which earned him a record 227.79 points to the delight of an engaged crowd.
“I don’t even have a subscription to HBO,” Malinin told The New York Times. “But if I get it, I’d definitely watch.”
Malinin entered his free skate routine needing a big moment after placing third in the short program, and he delivered.
Once Nicholas Britell’s soundtrack started playing on the loudspeakers at Bell Centre, fans began clapping and Malinin — nicknamed the “Quad God” for his quadruple jumps — sprang to life. He landed six quadruple jumps, including the quadruple axel that only he has ever landed in competition.

The 19-year-old athlete is known as the “quad God” and had been in third place after the short program on Thursday. However, during his free skate performance on Saturday, he impressed judges and scored 227.79 points, the highest score in the competition.

With October coming to a close, it's time to wrap up the spooky season and get ready for the holidays. But since there aren't a lot of good Thanksgiving movies available to enjoy without digging into the dredges of Hallmark movies, maybe you'd like to stick with some scary movies for one more month before it's time for Christmas overload. Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.

The Union Solidarity Coalition — founded over the summer by a group of writer-directors moved to support crewmembers amid the strike — launched an eBay auction last week with lots so unique, it seems they were dreamed up in a writers room. And the bids have been rolling in fast and thick.
A sampling of the offerings and current bids (as of publication time) include dinner with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross ($10,200); the cast of Bob’s Burgers singing a custom song ($7,200); Natasha Lyonne helping solve the New York Times Sunday crossword via Zoom ($6,100); Lena Dunham painting a mural in your home ($5,100); John Lithgow painting a watercolor portrait of your dog ($4,450); a pottery class with Busy Philipps in New York ($3,500); Adam Scott walking your dog in L.A. for one hour ($2,500); a Zoom with Barry Jenkins and Nicholas Britell ($1,250); and a relationship advice squabble over Zoom with Rosemarie Dewitt and Ron Livingston ($1,136).

Jeremy Allen White’s apron from “The Bear,” signed by the cast and crew, has passed $2,000 in an eBay auction.
The item highlights the sale of a large group of Hollywood memorabilia and experiences to benefit film and TV crew members who have lost their healthcare coverage or are facing the risk of losing it amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
After an initial successful fundraising effort that garnered $315,000 earlier this summer, The Union Solidarity Coalition is now focusing its fundraising efforts on eBay auctions, featuring exclusive items and extraordinary in-person experiences for those who place the highest bids.
Along with “The Bear” apron, other film, TV, and music memorabilia include the Hawaiian shirt from the Roku film “Weird,” signed by Weird Al Yankovic and Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Wait’s iconic fedora with his signature, and a Parker Posey package comprised of personal items from “Dazed and Confused” and “Party Girl,...

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to take a pottery class with Busy Phillips? Or have dinner straight out of "Mr. Show" with Bob Odenkirk And David Cross? Perhaps you'd like some help on the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle with "Poker Face" star Natasha Lyonne? Maybe, just maybe, you're the kind of person who dreams of Adam Scott walking your dog, or of admiring a watercolor painting of your dog created by six-time Emmy-winner John Lithgow. If any of these oddly specific situations have you screaming out, "Yes! That's me! I am the person who dreams of these things!", I've got some unbelievably great news for you.

For most of my life, I don't think I'd ever genuinely understood what people meant when they said they had an experience where they could feel their soul leaving their body. Then I watched Kendall Roy's (Jeremy Strong) rap on "Succession."
A little context. The first season of Jesse Armstrong's acerbic tragicomedy series about the Roy family -- the clan of miscreant one-percenters who own a powerful global media conglomerate called Waystar RoyCo -- ends with patriarch Logan (Brian Cox) helping Kendall cover up his complicity in the accidental death of a young waiter at his sister Shiv's (Sarah Snook) wedding. Logan, ever the terrible father, proceeds to lord his newly gained power over his "number-one boy" in season 2, coercing Kendall into kowtowing to his every whim. Eventually, Logan reaps what he sows when a celebration is held to commemorate his 50th anniversary at Waystar in his hometown of Dundee,...

Succession composer Nicholas Britell already knew that Logan Roy was going to die in Season Four. In fact, it was his starting point in creating the musical soundscape that wrapped itself around the final season of the hit HBO series. That moment gave him enough emotional insight to build off without needing to know every detail about the upcoming episodes down to the final scenes. In the latest episode of The Breakdown, Britell takes Rolling Stone through his process of creating the chilling sounds of Succession and preserving the element...

The good news for HBO’s critically acclaimed “The White Lotus” is that it grabbed 11 Emmy craft nominations, second only to HBO’s “The Last of Us,” which led with 12. The bad news for “The White Lotus,” which took home five craft wins last season, is that it switched from Best Anthology to Best Drama for Season 2’s transition from Hawaii to Sicily. Now it goes head to head with contemporary rivals “Succession” (HBO), “The Last of Us,” and “Wednesday” (Netflix).
To its credit, Mike White’s exotic resort hotel black comedy successfully pivoted from money to sex in Season 2 with pretty much a new ensemble cast. While its Emmy wins the first time out were primarily in the anthology category, it additionally won for de Veer’s main title theme music.

A version of this story about Nicholas Britell first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Among the music nominees at this year’s Emmys, Danny Elfman (“Wednesday”) and Laura Karpman (“Ms. Marvel”) have double nominations for those series’ scores and main title themes, but Nicholas Britell takes it one step further as the only composer with three nominations. Two of those, for score and theme, are for the first season of the Disney+ series “Andor.” The last is for his score in the final season of “Succession,” for which Britell had been nominated for three previous Emmys, winning one.
Britell’s previous work has tended toward the indie world, including Barry Jenkins’ films “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” and his limited series “The Underground Railroad.” He’s gone more mainstream with Adam McKay’s “Vice” and “Don’t Look Up...

It’s Nicholas Britell versus Nicholas Britell in the Emmys race for the “Succession” (Max) and “Andor” (Disney+) original scores — and the Emmy-winning composer is also competing for the “Andor” theme as well. Not surprisingly, he’s favored to take home wins for both “Succession” and “Andor” in the respective categories. Which is only fitting since this is his last chance at the big musical “Succession” prize after being denied the first three seasons, and his unconventional theme for the critically acclaimed “Rogue One” prequel is a standout.
For score, Britell is up against HBO’s “The Last of Us” (Gustavo Santaolalla) and “The White Lotus” (Cristobal Tapia de Veer), and Netflix’s “Wednesday” (Danny Elfman and Chris Bacon). For main title, he’s up against “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities”, “Ms. Marvel”, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, and “Wednesday” (Elfman).

Emmys season might be in flux as Hollywood remains shut down amidst the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but there are still a whole host of great TV shows worth celebrating and unpacking. Case in point: "Andor" VFX supervisor Mohen Leo, who's nominated for his work on the "Star Wars" show, recently spoke to Variety about the dystopian drama's design, and dropped some behind-the-scenes details tying one massive franchise to another in an unexpected way.
According to the outlet, Leo and his team had access to a "digital backlot" where they could search through past designs for ships and sets. "We had 3D models of the spaceships, droids and structures. So, when we put something together, we could go through our toy box," Leo told Variety. He also revealed that one of the show's ships, the modified Haulcraft that Stellan Skarsgård's Luthen Rael used to secretly plot a revolution,...

Emmy-winning producer and director Mark Mylod has been with Succession for all four seasons, as has composer Nicholas Britell, who won an Emmy for the iconic theme of the series marking the three-time Oscar nominee’s first TV show. However, it was the stunner of a Episode 3 in the series’ final season, “Connor’s Wedding,” that was unlike anything they had tackled before on the show, and it presented unique challenges.
It also has presented them with their latest Emmy nominations as the episode each submitted (as did creator Jesse Armstrong in the writing category). Succession has received 27 nominations this season overall.
Appearing on the HBO | Max panel for the show at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event, both Mylod and Britell said that while Logan Roy’s death in the episode was a shocker for the audience, it was always the plan to have Brian Cox’s character exit in this way.

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Pt will certainly make it worth the wait.

When Emmy nominations were announced on July 12, artisans in the craft categories made a splash in more ways than one — some landed multiple nominations in several categories, others inched closer to achieving Egot status and many received first-time recognition.

May the Force be with… Emmy voters? Disney Plus amassed an impressive 40 Emmy nominations this year (up from 34 last year) thanks to its stable of “Star Wars” saga hits, which accounted for more than half of the mouse house’s total haul of 23 bids — nine for “The Mandalorian,” eight for “Andor,” five for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and one for docuseries “Light & Magic.”
Although “Mandalorian” nabbed nine bids, the real success story this year is “Andor,” scoring a Best Drama Series nomination for its debut season plus writing and directing bids and five Creative Arts noms. The latest live-action series in the Disney-era “Star Wars” franchise, “Andor” serves as a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and also by extension to the original Oscar-winning classic “Star Wars” (1977).

There’s something to fall head-over-heels for about daring reimaginations of formidable classics—the deceitfully “simpler” the source, the more pressure on the adaptation to bring out its colors. Isn’t it practically an inexplicable branch of evolution that even those of us not thoroughly familiar with Georges Bizet’s opera and Prosper Mérrimée’s prose of the same name can immediately associate the name Carmen with the color red? Red is what Jörg Widmer smears on each of his symbolism-soaked frames that speak the unspoken about the nymph-like poem manifested as an immigrant woman. And for the faithful portrayal of the odd fairytale lover worthy of beholding her with the eyes that betray his pain, Benjamin Millepied entrusts the reins to Nicholas Britell’s haunting score, which is as much a protagonist as Carmen and Aiden.

HBO’s “The Last of Us,” the acclaimed dystopian survival drama from showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, led all Emmys craft categories July 12 with 12 (the first TV Academy recognition for a live-action video game adaptation). Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, and composers Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Danny Elfman were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
Four-time Oscar winner Atwood landed her second Emmy nomination in the outstanding contemporary costumes for Tim Burton’s “Wednesday.” Speaking about her work on the show and about recreating the icon Morticia Addams’ costumes, Atwood said, “We reinvented look with this silver fabric on the side, which was bonded to the black, twisted and sewn over. The dress had a more contemporary shape to it. I think we honored the previous versions of Morticia that had come before.
Britell, who won an Emmy in 2019 for outstanding original main title theme music for “Succession” landed three nominations. The composer was recognized for his main title music and original dramatic score work on Disney+’s “Andor.” He also landed a nomination for “Succession.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Andor is from Gilroy who did last minute shoots and wrote on Rogue One, the series talking place before that pre-Episode IV movie following the early days of Rebel warrior Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna who is also an EP on the show.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Music has always been an integral part of the “Star Wars” universe, dating back to the John Williams scores for the original movie trilogy. So will Emmy voters recognize one, two or all three of the recent “Star Wars” TV series in the scoring categories?
Vying for consideration: the 12-part “Andor,” with music by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Nicholas Britell (“Succession”); the six-part “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” with a new theme by Williams and score by English composer Natalie Holt (“Loki”); and the eight-part third season of “The Mandalorian,” with music by Joseph Shirley. All aired on Disney+.
Britell spent more than two years on “Andor,” the backstory of “Rogue One” hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), including several months creating music that was played on the set during filming – from the Time Grappler’s hammer-banging signals on Ferrix to the alien electronica in the clubs on Morlana and the amateur funeral band playing a...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “With Open Eyes,” the series finale of HBO’s “Succession,” now streaming on Max.
The end of “Succession” was filmed on the coldest day of the year.
“The windchill was minus-something in Fahrenheit, and it was absolute purgatory to shoot,” says Mark Mylod, the director and executive producer who has steered many of “Succession’s” greatest episodes. “Jeremy initially was feeling nothing but cold.”
Mylod, who has now helmed all four season finales of the HBO juggernaut, was worried that the last scene — with Jeremy Strong’s Kendall hopelessly walking through Battery Park, and Logan’s leftover bodyguard Colin trailing behind — didn’t feel “weighty enough.”
Then, they followed what has become a leitmotif for Kendall throughout the series and drifted toward the Hudson River, to feel the “gravitational pull of the water on the character.”
“We hit what was, to me, a golden theme,...

Succession may be over, but you can listen to Nicholas Britell’s devastating, screeching score and stare off into the sunset with Kendall Roy forever. To coincide with the show’s finale, Britell has revealed the Season 4 score in full, which you can stream below.
At 25 tracks, the final Succession soundtrack includes recurring melodies, like the show’s theme song and end credits, as well as music from specific moments in Season 4 — like Shiv’s resignation to Tom that “We gave it a go,” Logan’s impassioned (if not unsettling) “Pirates” speech at the offices at Atn, and Connor’s rightful proclamation that his siblings are nothing but “Needy love sponges.”
“The score for Season 4 represents the culmination of my musical vision for Succession,” Britell said in a statement. “With its depths of pathos and its simultaneous capacity for comic absurdity, Succession has presented me with a truly extraordinary story to underscore.
