Underworld have returned with an eight-minute single titled “denver luna.” Stream it below.
Built around a driving electro pulse, “denver luna” primarily serves as a vehicle for a compelling performance by vocalist Karl Hyde, delivering stream-of-consciousness lyrics ripe with alliteration, sibilance, and imaginative rhymes. As the tune progresses, layers of his voice surmount, building a wall of harmonic movement, all while the steady kick drum keeps things moving.
The full version of “denver luna” arrives one month after Underworld shared an acapella rendition of the tune, which shined a light on the intricate composition and processing of Hyde’s vocals. Now, on the full version, the breadth of the dynamics has expanded, with shimmering hi-hats and the anchoring bottom end elevating the climaxes to a stirring level of danciness. Watch the visualizer for the song below.

Brian Eno and Fred again.. have cooked up a collaborative album called Secret Life that’s out today via Four Tet’s Text Records. Stream the album, along with a secret three-hour version, below.
Four Tet announced Secret Life on social media, calling it “the most beautiful album of 2023.” The project is also available on CD and vinyl. Additionally, he revealed a Secret Life radio station that “has been broadcasting every day for a while at 10:00 p.m. UK time.”
The record isn’t the first collaboration between Fred again.. and Eno. The DJ grew up next to Eno, and as a teenager, he joined an a cappella group at the producer’s studio. The two artists worked together professionally for the first time in 2014, when Fred Again.. worked as a songwriter on Eno and Karl Hyde’s albums Someday World and High Life. Fred again.. also served as co-producer on the former project.

Even as the Edinburgh International Film Festival presses ahead up north, the nation’s capital is not – and never has been – content to sit complacent on the cinematic front. The East End Film Festival, founded in 2000 and expanding year on year ever since, returns from 25 June to July 10 and once again boasts a remarkably strong lineup. Awards to dish out include Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film and the Eeff Short Film Audience Award, from an eclectic jury that features the likes of the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, Wu-Tang Clan head honcho RZA, and Armando Bo, winner of last year’s Best Film Award for his directorial debut El Ultimo Elvis.

The Act Of Killing: Directors Tour, Nationwide
Co-produced by Werner Herzog and Errol Morris, no less, The Act Of Killing establishes Joshua Oppenheimer as a significant force in documentary, if that's what you can call it. Oppenheimer's movie tracks down the perpetrators of Indonesia's state-sanctioned 60s genocide and encourages them to recreate their crimes as scenarios from Hollywood movies, a project they embrace all too readily. By turns, shocking, surreal and revelatory, this innovative film blurs fact and fiction and leaves you with many questions. To answer some of those, the UK-based American director talks to John Pilger at Brixton's Ritzy on Friday, and Q&As at 10 other venues.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle, whose new film -- a mind-melting hypnotism thriller called "Trance" -- is showing nationwide, is known for his intense creative collaborations between writers like Alex Garland and John Hodge, and (for a while at least) actors like Ewan McGregor. But one of his most important and frequently overlooked collaborative relationships is with the British dance duo Underworld (nee Karl Hyde and Rick Smith), who have provided music for a number of Boyle projects, both film and otherwise, including last summer's Olympics Opening Ceremony. We got to chat with one half of Underworld, Rick Smith, about his various collaborations with Boyle, including the dizzying score for "Trance," which he completed without his frequent partner Hyde. “Trainspotting” There are a number of memorable musical moments in "Trainspotting," Boyle's sophomore effort and the film that would effectively launch his career as one of the most fearless and utterly brilliant filmmakers in the.

Underworld's Karl Hyde has made a feature-length documentary about his travels through Essex – here's the first glimpse of the film's trailer
Here's something you don't see every day: Karl Hyde, he of shouty techno act Underworld, has gone off and made a rather moving, artful documentary essay about the Essex borderlands, following the route of the river Roding down to the docks on the Thames estuary. Naturally, the film developed from a record project: Hyde has a solo album, Edgeland, due out next month.
Hyde has got together with director Kieran Evans, who is best known as the co-director of another music-inspired documentary, the Saint-Etienne-scored Finisterre from 2002. (Evans hus just completed his fiction-feature debut, Kelly+ Victor, due out later this year.) They have taken their cue very much from the urban travelogue school of Patrick Keiller and his Robinson films; The Outer Edges is a finely balanced mix of interview,...

The last major project from Danny Boyle was, of course, the stunning London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. Its musical directors were long-time Boyle collaborators Underworld - Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. Like all their previous work, that night's music was very much a partnership, but with Rick getting sole writing credit for the two new pieces ('Caliban's Dream' and earthshattering Industrial Revolution soundtrack 'And I Will Kiss'), there were the first signs that both parties were looking to forge an identity away from their Freur frère.
So, with Karl off working on his own solo debut Edgeland, Rick has reunited with Danny to score his Olympics' evil cousin, mindbending heist thriller Trance. Those expecting the pop jukebox of Trainspotting or banging 4/4 dance of Underworld will be surprised. Aside from a small clutch of carefully-selected songs, Smith has composed a restrained-but-powerful, twisting and turning keyboard-heavy soundtrack. Like Boyle's film, it's flawed, a...

Alongside Quentin Tarantino, Danny Boyle is one of the few filmmakers who knows exactly how to meld sound and image to enhance the moviegoing experience. The Oscar-winning director sent Ewan McGregor storming down a Scotland street for Trainspotting to Iggy Pop, while Cillian Murphy wandered through the deserted streets of London in 28 Days Later to the eerie sound of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Boyle's latest movie Trance is an equally memorable sonic experience, as the director continues his working relationship with Underworld's Rick Smith. To mark the film's release, Digital Spy has picked out 10 great songs or musical tracks from Danny Boyle's back catalogue.

Underworld's Emeli Sandé and Rick Smith have recorded a duet 'Here It Comes' for new Danny Boyle movie Trance.
Smith, a frequent Boyle collaborator who directed the music for his London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, is behind the soundtrack for the follow-up to 127 Hours.
"After finishing the Opening Ceremony, I hardly knew what day of the week it was. I took a month off work, off music, off everything," Smith said.
"Exactly one month and three days after we said goodbye in the stadium, I received a text from Danny that said, 'Do you ever want to hear from me again workwise and would that go as far as having a chat about Trance... questions, questions'. Two minutes later I was on board."
Sandé, who was also an integral part of the Olympics ceremony, added: "It was wonderful to work with Rick again after the amazing time I had with...

Karl Hyde has announced details of his debut solo album Edgeland. The Underworld frontman had teased a track 'Cut Clouds' earlier this month and has now made the full song available on YouTube. Edgeland is released on April 22. "For over twenty years, my love of cityscapes has grown and grown" said Hyde. "The beauty of decay, tyre marks, crude graffiti, industrial noise, overheard conversations, epidemics of coffee bars and nights on the back seat being driven through cities by drivers who never sleep. "A celebration of people's idiosyncrasies, mapping out my journeys with the stories they tell, edgelands where city meets scrub, where ragged ponies grazed annexed fields and the air smells chemical." The full tracklisting of Edgelands is as follows: 1. 'The Night Slips Us Smiling Underneath Its Dress'

Underworld's frontman Karl Hyde has teased a minute of a new song. The musician posted the audio of a track called 'Cut Clouds' on YouTube yesterday (January 14). "A new year, and a fans-only sneak preview of a new track from Karl - we hope you like it," the description read. "Stay tuned for more exciting news to come. Happy New Year." Credited to Hyde alone but posted on the band's YouTube channel, it is unclear if the track will end up as an Underworld release or Hyde solo song. Speaking to Digital Spy in December 2010, Hyde admitted that he and Rick Smith had many fallings out over the years as people do but "just decided not to split up". "A long time ago we said that even if we're not friends it shouldn't stop us making music," he said. "You don't have to be friends to (more)...

1.) With Texas Chainsaw 3D sitting atop the domestic box-office charts this week, it's only natural for sequel talk to begin. And according to Bloody Disgusting, the producers have the rights to make six more films in the franchise. These slashers are relatively low-risk, so you have to figure Lionsgate will keep churning them out. 2.) I haven't done one of these Star Wars stories in a while, but honestly, news is pretty slow today so I don't have much of a choice to pass this one along. Early fan favorite for the Episode VII director's chair Guillermo del Toro says he was approached about the gig, but had do decline due to his busy schedule. He did offer his take on who he'd like to see at the helm: "I think the fans deserve somebody that is just going to immerse themselves completely. As a geek, I would have loved to see Brad Bird take it.

Maybe you’ve noticed something in Hollywood when it comes to action and horror movies; they jump on the popularity of a trend faster than you walked out of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. We’ve already been treated to a debacle of 80s cartoon remakes, with Transformers, G.I. Joe, The Smurfs, and a new Ninja Turtles reboot headed our way, courtesy of Michael Bay. But Hollywood, faithful as you’d expect to deliver what the people want, goes beyond that.
When a zombie movie is released to major success, a multitude of zombie films randomly appear to be thrust into screens everywhere. After Danny Boyle’s 2002 feature 28 Days Later, we were treated with Resident Evil, House of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Dawn of the Living Dead, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Shaun of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Zombieland…you get the point.

Trainspotting director is taking a big gamble with his unconventional opening ceremony
In the final runup to the opening ceremony, nervous energy inside the Olympic Park must now be overwhelming. Reports that Danny Boyle, artistic director of the opening ceremony, has spent the last few days closeted away inside his trailer, while BBC technical staff row with his creative team outside, will fade from the memory if Friday's night's show is judged a success.
But if his attempt to create a startling British spectacle with a smaller budget than recent Olympic ceremonies receives a thumbs down, then Boyle knows his vision will be the subject of a post-mortem for months to come.
Hitches during the planning and rehearsal period for the £27m show have included the injury to the Achilles tendon of the Bangladeshi dancer and choreographer Akram Khan, who still hopes to perform; the withdrawal of one of Britain's leading theatrical stars,...

Olympics ceremony titled Isles of Wonder will involve NHS nurses and hundreds of children, says its creator Danny Boyle
"Be not afeared. The isle is full of noises." As a welcome to London for athletes and spectators arriving for the 2012 Olympics, opening ceremony director Danny Boyle has decided Caliban's line from Shakespeare's The Tempest is particularly apposite.
So much so that the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director has chosen it as the inspiration for a £27m four-hour spectacular that will feature a tribute to the NHS, Europe's largest bell, a torch lighting sequence and a cast and crew of 12,000 – all shot through with "British humour" and set to the music of Underworld.

A new poster has been revealed for Laika's upcoming stop-motion animated, 3-D movie, ParaNorman. Much like the recently released UK trailer, the new poster is focused on revealing ParNorman's undead, but, not to worry moms and dads, this isn't your typical zombie movie.
When a small Massachusetts town falls under siege from the undead because of a centuries-old curse, young local boy Norman (voiced by Let Me In's Kodi Smit-McPhee) is called upon to save the town, since he is able to talk to the dead. For those that think ParaNorman reminds them of 2009's Coraline, it's no coincidence since animation studio Laika worked on both movies.
ParaNorman was directed by The Tale of Despereaux's Sam Fell and Chris Butler (storyboard supervisor on Coraline) from a script by Butler. The voice cast includes Casey Affleck, John Goodman, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin and Leslie Mann.

Dance duo's crackling electronics will bring monster to life in director's stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel
Underworld are once again collaborating with Danny Boyle, teaming up with the director for his stage adaptation of Frankenstein. The National Theatre production will feature a "soundscore" by dance duo Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who are bringing the monster to life with crackling electronics and pounding bass.
Boyle and Underworld have a history of collaboration. In 1996, the director's use of Born Slippy .Nuxx in Trainspotting catapulted the dance act to stardom. Hyde and Smith later co-wrote the score to Sunshine, Boyle's 2007 science-fiction film.
Frankenstein is already in rehearsals in London and will open next year. With an original script by Nick Dear, actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller are to alternate in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creature.

Underworld singer Karl Hyde has admitted that he and Rick Smith have not always been the best of friends. The musicians have been working together for over 30 years, initially forming as The Screen Gemz, before founding Freur. In September, they released Barking, their eighth studio album as Underworld. Asked for the secret behind the length of their musical partnership, Hyde quipped: "We've had loads of fallings out - We just decided not to split up! It really was as simple as that. A long time ago we said that even if we're not friends it shouldn't stop us making music. "You don't have to be friends to make music. That's a great fallacy, that everybody has to be a buddy and get on and agree and like each other's taste in music and each other's girlfriends or whatever. It's (more)...

Karl Hyde has said that he does not mind that his band Underworld are best known for 'Born Slippy'. The .Nuxx mix of 'Born Slippy' reached number two in the UK singles charts in 1996 after it featured over the final scenes in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting. Asked if he resented being known mainly for that track by the mainstream, Hyde told Digital Spy: "No, not at all - it's fantastic that we're known for anything. It's great that we're known for something in the mainstream. "It's a joy and we're really grateful that we've got tunes like 'Born Slippy'... it's fantastic. It's always a joy - we played (more)...

Underworld singer Karl Hyde has said that he and Rick Smith were inspired by remixes of their work when recording their latest album Barking. The duo's current record features input from Dubfire, Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, Appleblim & Al Tourettes and Paul van Dyk Asked about the guest collaborators, Hyde told Digital Spy: "It was a very conscious decision - it's been borne out of years of having our music remixed and really enjoying the remixes. "It's very frustrating that albums are done and dusted and the remixes come after the album. We just said, 'Wouldn't it be great to get into the studio with some of these people and find out what happens before the tracks are even finished?'. We love jamming, we really love jamming." Asked if he and Smith were tempted to enlist Darren Emerson, who was in Underworld (more)...

The global electronic dance music community celebrated a victory last week as Underworld conquered a first for Edm groups in the States. Never before has an electronic act performed live on late-night television. But that all changed when Underworld's Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson treated "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" viewers to a live performance of "Always Loved a Film," a collaboration for which they brought along electronic music staples Mark Knight and D. Ramirez.
Along with that feat, Underworld are also toasting the release of their latest album, Barking. Prior to the release of their new LP, Underworld hadn't much tested the waters of collaboration, but Knight and Ramirez reached out to Hyde late last year...

Underworld spent the ’90s selling techno that was bulked up by rock-serious signifiers, particularly Karl Hyde’s stream-of-consciousness vocal rants and banks of synthesizers that didn’t hearken back to disco so much as to bloated mid-’80s new wave of the Simple Minds variety. But over time, Hyde and partner Rick Smith have gravitated toward more obvious vocal hooks, as well as a sprightlier musical style, although the results have been just as uneven. Despite its title, Barking is, in some ways, the most tuneful Underworld album yet, which isn’t saying a lot—Hyde isn’t much of ...

"Underworld" star Karl Hyde is to debut 70 new artworks as part of the What's Going on in Your Head as You're Dancing exhibition at the Laforet Museum in Harajuku, Japan. It will be the "Born Slippy" hitmaker's first solo art show, and his first since he presented pieces in New York with "Underworld" partner Rick Smith and artist John Warwicker in 2008.
Hyde tells Spinner, "It started off by making series of marks while I was doing interviews, marks that were inspired by walking through the streets of cities."
"That started to develop into seeing the same shapes I see in my head while I'm onstage with 'Underworld'. I see physical 3-D shapes in my head while I'm onstage of the potential moves I might make when I'm thinking about moving across stage or interpreting the sound."...

Underworld have said that they were more than happy to work with several younger artists on their upcoming album. Founding duo Karl Hyde and Rick Smith collaborated with Dubfire, Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, Appleblim & Al Tourettes and Paul van Dyk on Barking, which is released on September 13. Hyde told Metro: "We didn't want to be in an 'old' band. Our heroes were people such as Miles Davis, Bowie and Picasso, who had the ability to constantly reinvent themselves. "They didn't have a problem working with younger people. We've always been about jamming, and passing ideas back and (more)...

Underworld have said that they have been working with producer Brian Eno in Australia. The dance duo told BBC 6 Music that they had penned enough material to fill three albums. Karl Hyde said: "We actually managed to go into the studio this week and a little bit last week too, which is unbelievable. "It's a miracle. Normally bits of our kit are strewn all over the world, or we've got enough time to get back, unpack a case, scratch, and then get back on a plane again." He added: (more)...

With Sony Screen Games and Lakeshore Entertainment teaming up once again for a third leather-bound trip to the Underworld, many questions have surfaced, specifically regarding the "quality" of the film.
