Devil’s Gate, a little-known horror movie from 2017, currently ranks as the eighth most-watched film on Netflix. Compared to older and staler entries on the list, such as the controversial erotic drama and psychological thriller 365 Days as well as the widely popular albeit somewhat predictable action blockbuster The Old Guard, it may provide viewers with some fresh entertainment as theaters remain empty.
Ever since Netflix began updating its top ten lists on a daily rather than a weekly basis, subscribers have become more and more interested in what their neighbors are watching. Usually, the lists are filled with predictable entries. Now that the coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to the release of most new films, however, wild cards from the recent (or distant) past resurface rather frequently.

If Warner Bros. ever decide to get around to finishing the fabled Snyder Cut of Justice League, which is rumored to clock in at over 3.5 hours, fans will likely have already seen the majority of the unreleased footage thanks to the sheer number of images that have been making the rounds online in recent months.
Zack Snyder himself has been the chief culprit, bombarding social media with dozens of previously-unseen photos in an effort to continue drumming up publicity for his original cut of Justice League, which the filmmaker may or may not be in early negotiations with the studio about depending on who you believe, although he’s reassured fans not to lose hope.
However, the latest snapshot from Snyder’s Justice League doesn’t come from the director, but from Clay Staub, the movie’s aerial second unit director who also worked with Snyder on Dawn of the Dead...

You can bet the farm that with a title like Devil’s Gate, scary things will be happening over at the old Jackson Pritchard place. When the misanthropic farmer’s wife and child mysteriously disappear, an FBI agent (Amanda Schull of “12 Monkeys”) and police deputy (“The Following’s” Shawn Ashmore) investigate at the remote homestead. A farmer's fringe-y religious beliefs prove oddly rooted in reality in Devil's Gate, the first feature by director Clay Staub and his co-screenwriter Peter Aperlo. The fact that the pic is titled Abduction in other territories more than hints at the fact that what this troubled man sees as angels or demons may in fact be old-fashioned extra-terrestrials. But his confusion and zeal add little texture to this unmoving genre exercise. A cast with plenty of exposure on TV series may help with the film's commercial prospects, but only the least critical genre auds are likely to enjoy it much.

I confess to a high level of appreciation for low-budget films that defy easy categorization, such as Devil's Gate. The opening sequence resembles that of a backwoods horror experience that will be grungy and nasty, leaving behind a trail of dead bodies and queasy stomachs. Yet even in such familiar territory, director Clay Staub deviates from the norm. Working from an original screenplay credited to himself and Peter Aperlo, Staub tamps down the explicit bloodshed in that scene and then moves quickly to establish an atmosphere of mystery and possible suspense. This appears to be Staub's feature debut, but he has experience as a second unit director for Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead and 300, as well as the latest remake of The Thing....

Tagline: "Every Family Has Its Secrets." A release date has been chosen by IFC Midnight, for Clay Staub's Devil's Gate. This sci-fi and horror title will show in early January, in limited theatres and through Video-on-demand. The film centrally stars Milo Ventimiglia as a distraught father and husband. His wife is missing. Meanwhile, a strange entity has made its presence known on the farm. Devil's Gate also stars: Bridget Regan and Amanda Schull, along with Jonathan Frakes and Shawn Ashmore. The film's theatrical poster is hosted here. Devil's Gate has already been reviewed on 28Dla, here (A Devil's Gate Review on 28Dla). The film is very much an alien abduction film. Local authorities investigate a disappearance, while others continue to disappear. This is director Clay Staub's directorial debut. And, the film's pace is a bit slow. Though, sci-fi and mystery film fans will likely enjoy this title, more than horror fans.

I've got a great trailer here for you to watch for a surprisingly good-looking movie called Devil's Gate. The film is a sci-fi creature feature that is set in a small fictional town in North Dakota named Devil's Gate. Things start out as a typical murder mystery but as things start to unravel, things go in a very unpredictable direction and creepy chaos ensues. This looks like it's going to be a wild movie!
The film stars Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us) as a religious fanatic named Jackson Pritchard, along with Amanda Schull (12 Monkeys), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Bridget Regan (John Wick), and Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: Tng). Here's the synopsis:

"Some people are better off not being found." IFC Midnight has debuted the first official trailer for a sci-fi creature feature horror thriller called Devil's Gate. The title comes from the location in the film, a small town in North Dakota named Devil's Gate (which does not really exist). This starts out as your typical small town murder mystery involving various shady characters, but then turns into some crazy alien horror half-way through (the trailer) with some freaky shots. Milo Ventimiglia stars as religious fanatic Jackson Pritchard, along with Amanda Schull, Shawn Ashmore, Bridget Regan, and Jonathan Frakes. That actually seems like a cool cast for a sci-fi horror, and maybe there's some cool twists in this for horror fans to enjoy. All the creepy footage with the creature in this trailer is quite effectively scary. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Clay Staub's Devil's Gate,...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's sales agent, Premiere Entertainment Group. **there are minor spoilers here. Director: Clay Staub. Writers: Peter Aperlo and Clay Staub. Cast: Milo Ventimiglia, Bridget Regan, Amanda Schull, Shawn Ashmore and Jonathan Frakes. Devil's Gate aka Abduction is a science fiction thriller from director Clay Staub and writing partner Peter Aperlo. Staub has experience behind the camera as a second unit director, on films like 300 (2006). In Devil's Gate, Staub is more forefront, with a family waylayed by an alien invasion. This title recently had its World Premiere in Tribeca. And, IFC Midnight will show Devil's Gate, later this year, through their platforms. Devil's Gate is a very slowly paced film outing. Certain scenes are drawn out too long and events are sometimes over-explained. Still, this film is reminiscent of a few others, in the sci-fi and horror genres. A...

IFC Midnight has already picked up Clay Staub's Devil's Gate. The deal was brokered this past May. Recently, a trailer was released for the title, at the Uhm. The clip shows a decrepit house and a strange monster. Local officials face the creature. But, none is likely to survive. Devil's Gate stars: Milo Ventimiglia (Pathology, 2008), Bridget Regan, Amanda Schull and Shawn Ashmore. The film's official trailer can be found here. The long synopsis talks of a missing mother and son. Their father is searching for them, but he has found something sinister. Now, it is locked in a basement, with traps all around. An FBI agent and Deputy attend the scene. They have bitten off more than they can chew as the creature escapes its bonds. Devil's Gate is expected to release in late 2017 or early 2018. An official release date has not been announced. For now, horror fans can...

Last week, co-writer/director Clay Staub celebrated the world premiere of Devil’s Gate, his mysterious sci-fi thriller which pits a pair of FBI agents (played by Shawn Ashmore and Amanda Schull) against a small-town farmer, after his family is abducted and nothing is as it seems. Daily Dead caught up with Staub, Ashmore, and Schull to hear more on the project, and they discussed their approach to the material, how being isolated in Winnipeg during production was an asset for them while working on Devil’s Gate, and more.
I'd love to start off with you, Clay, and hear about where the idea for this story came from. As somebody who's driven through North Dakota and South Dakota and Montana, those wide-open states where everything feels so vast and wide open, I could see how that might make the perfect location for a horror movie. Dwayne Johnson Almost Starred in a Hard R Adaptation of Saints Row with Dan Trachtenberg at the Helm
With Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell, and several more video game movies currently in development, it's proof that Hollywood has shifted their attention to video game adaptations in hopes that they finally figure out how to make great films out of them. Only time will tell if they succeed.

This was being developed as a hard R adaptation, which is what you'd expect from Saints Row, and Dwayne Johnson was interested in starring in it. They were also looking to bring on 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg to helm the film. According to Fandom,...
