Paramount announced on Monday that its new, musical take on Mean Girls will begin streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on March 5th, coming to international markets at a later date.
Based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical and the beloved 2004 film that inspired it, Mean Girls watches as new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).
When Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay...

If you ask anyone over the age of 25, they'll probably tell you that there's no dollar amount in the world that could ever make them want to go back to high school, and for good reason — high school can be hell. Teen films have been a popular and profitable subgenre for decades, but few films have become a cultural phenomenon quite like "Mean Girls." The film centers on teenager Cady Heron who is starting public school for the first time as a high school junior, having been spared from the cruel cliques or popularity warfare on campus. After a few less-than-stellar days, she catches the eye of Queen Bee Regina George, the leader of a popular clique known as The Plastics who rule North Shore High School with perfectly manicured nails and hair insured for $10,000 (or full of secrets).

January is always a challenging month for moviegoing, and this January was particularly tough sledding, what with the impact of the actor’s and writer’s strikes taking a steep toll on an already-limited schedule of theatrical releases.

Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.
Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”
Avantika didn’t get the chance to meet Seyfried before or during production, but a couple of days after the...

The Mean Girls reboot is one of the various adaptions spawned from the 2004 original film of the same name. The film also boasts a star-packed cast, including Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried in her film debut. The film’s concept is based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes and Fey’s personal experience at Upper Darby High School. The 2004 film was a critical and commercial success which inspired a lot of awards, especially for Lohan’s...

Originally gracing our screens in 2004, the seminal Mean Girls movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, capturing the essence of the early 2000s through its endlessly quotable lines and resonant exploration of millennial teenage angst. Penned by the comedic genius Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and featuring the talents of a youthful Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), the film artfully depicted high school as a tumultuous battleground defined by archetypal cliques.
Fast forward to 2018, and Tina Fey’s original screenplay underwent a theatrical transformation, landing on Broadway as the dazzling Mean Girls: The Musical. However, this triumphant debut was abruptly halted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, bringing the curtains down on its promising run.
Now, the narrative takes an intriguing turn with the latest iteration of Fey’s beloved tale. This fresh adaptation not only draws inspiration from the original screenplay but also enlists several stars from...

"I read this script and thought, 'This is the best script I've read in God knows how long.'" That's what director Mark Waters told Entertainment Weekly in 2014 about his reaction to reading Tina Fey's script for "Mean Girls." At the time, it was called "Homeschooled" but the title didn't matter. What mattered was what was on the page. Those words on those pages would inspire one of the most successful movies about the high school experience ever made.
"I had been wanting to try to learn how to write a movie. I had been looking for a subject matter for me for a couple of years," Fey, who was then working as the head writer on "Saturday Night Live," told...

This article contains spoilers for "Mean Girls."
Every stage-to-film musical adaptation requires reimagining, rearranging, or removing elements that wouldn't gel well with the camera and the editing room. Retelling "Mean Girls" (every version of which has been penned by Tina Fey) involves the monumental assignment of adapting layers-upon-layers of its sources, starting with Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 nonfiction parent book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and then moving onto the original 2004 Mark Waters-directed film based on Wiseman's book, the 2018 Casey Nicholaw-directed Broadway stage musical adaptation (which also features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin), and, finally, the 2024 "Mean Girls" movie musical directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
Naturally, the "Mean Girls" movie musical had to scrap several songs and gags from the Broadway stage musical to leave space for makeovers. Theatre heads who've experienced the stage version are bound to notice some major exclusions, including those listed below.

We don’t really need a reboot of Mean Girls, or indeed a film adaptation of the stage musical. But there you go, we are where we are. And that’s 2024, 20 years after the release of the seminal high school movie starring Lindsay Lohan which was based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Fashions have changed, social media is now ubiquitous, but teenage girls are still cliquey and judgey so the story hasn’t required a massive update. Perhaps that’s to its detriment, because this movie, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., is really an example of pop culture eating itself. The musical came because people liked the film. Now the new film exists, presumably for people who like the musical, while not having the unique selling point of it being on the stage. But if you can get over the audacity...

With last weekend’s Night Swim failing to garner the type of numbers other horror films have seen in January and landing in the second place spot to the holiday juggernaut that is Wonka, this weekend should finally see the first new number one movie of 2024. The question is: will it be the remake/ broadway adaptation Mean Girls or the Jason Statham revenge tale The Beekeeper?
It’s going to be Mean Girls. It wasn’t really much of a question if I am being honest. Mean Girls should easily land on top of the weekend box office as it is based off a property that is still very much in the zeitgeist. Twenty years ago SNL head writer Tina Fey brought to screens an adaptation of the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. That book was more of a straight laced “how to” book for parents about...

A lot has changed in the 20 years since Regina George and the Plastics first stalked the halls of North Shore High. Every teenager now has a smartphone. Mean Girls 2024, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., and starring a vibrant ensemble including Renée Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey (who also wrote the screenplay), Jaquel Spivey, and many others brings the classic 2004 teen comedy into the modern era with updated cultural references and a more diverse cast. However, the film struggles to justify its existence beyond surface-level changes and ultimately falters in delivering a coherent, impactful story that offers little new or compelling.
Mean Girls is adapted from Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes and became a Broadway musical in 2018 featuring music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The new movie closely follows the plot of the original film and centers around Cady Heron (Rice), a naive teenager who spent her childhood in Africa with her parents. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she moves to the United States...

Paramount’s new twist on Mean Girls arrived on tracking today and let’s just say it’s not just hot with the cool girls. With double digit in unaided awareness among older and younger women over and under 25, the feature take of the Tina Fey scripted Broadway musical is looking at a $27M+ opening over the four-day MLK holiday.
Note that unaided is that portion of audience polling whereby the respondents organically cite a movie title they’re interested in seeing, and aren’t prompted by a pollster. What’s clear here is that the Mean Girls brand is extremely strong. Paramount is just beginning to get their Mean Girls campaign underway three weeks before the pic’s opening on Jan. 12.
A $27M+ or even $30M opening is a great start for a comedy aimed at women in the post-Covid era. Also consider the fact that there are several...

The move, believed to be the first time a major Hollywood studio has put an entire film on the social platform, was a promotional tactic to raise awareness among Gen Z and younger Millennial viewers ahead of the January 2024 theatrical release of a new iteration of the cult film.

This week it was announced that Oscar winner Jessica Chastain (“Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will headline an upcoming limited series at Apple TV+. Details of the story are being closely guarded, other than that it will be called “The Savant” and is based on a Cosmopolitan article. While the official announcement didn’t confirm it, the series is likely based on Andrea Stanley’s 2019 article “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” Stanley — who is a consultant on the show — detailed the work of a woman known as “The Savant” who investigates violent men in hopes of preventing major attacks and mass shootings from occurring. Author Rosalind Wiseman is now detailing her real-life experience with the queen bee cliques of Hollywood.
Wiseman, whose book “Queen Bees and Wannabes” was adapted by Tina Fey into the hit 2004 film “Mean Girls,” alleged that Fey and studio Paramount have denied making net profits from the franchise and have not fairly compensated her for the source material. Wiseman made approximately $400,000 after selling the film rights in 2002 but has not received any additional payments since. Wiseman is taking legal action against Paramount.
“For so long I was so quiet about it, so, so quiet, but I just feel like the hypocrisy is too much,” Wiseman told The New York Post. “I think it’s fair for me to be able to get compensated in some way for the work that has changed our culture and changed the zeitgeist.”

She said it’s been a “painful experience” watching her book serve as the basis for so much success, including millions made by the film’s writer Tina Fey and Paramount.
In fact, at one she said Paramount claimed to her that they had not made any profits from the franchise.

In fact, at one she said Paramount claimed to her that they had not made any profits from the franchise.

Rosalind Wiseman, the author of the book which inspired the hit movie ‘Mean Girls’ has called lawyers in after claiming she has been ‘cut out’ of profits from the film which made $130 million. The author of the book which inspired the movie ‘Mean Girls’ has claimed that she hasn’t profited from its huge success, reports mirror.co.uk.
Wiseman was approached by Fey after publishing her book ‘Queen Bees’ and ‘Wannabes’ in 2002.
After obtaining the film rights, Tina went on to adapt it into the hit movie released in 2004 starring Lindsay Lohan.
It also featured ‘Queen Bee’ and head of ‘The Plastics’ Rachel McAdams as the ultimate mean girl, Regina George.
While the film went on to gross $130 million at the box office, Wiseman claims she was paid $400,000. The movie has since become a franchise and is now a Broadway and West End musical, which is also set to be turned into another movie.

Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried had a Mean Girls reunion and are questioning if a Mean Girls sequel to the original film is ever going to happen.
During a conversation that both actors had for Interview magazine, Seyfried was not entirely sure that a follow-up to the 2004 comedy would ever come to fruition.
“I would kill just to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on Mean Girls on Broadway,” Seyfried said about starring in the musical show. “Because a Mean Girls 2 is never going to happen, is it?”
Lohan replied, “I don’t know. I heard something about it being a movie musical and I was like, ‘Oh no.’ We can’t do that. It has to be the same tone.”
The Veronica Mars alum said, “Yeah. It would just be completely different.”

Fifteen years ago, the movie Mean Girls hit the screen and made us all laugh, giving tons of fans the most quotable lines and memorable scenes. Standing ovations are certainly nothing new when it comes to Broadway productions (the cast and crew would really have to screw up not to get one), but there was something a little extraordinary about the one that greeted a recent performance of the musical Mean Girls at the August Wilson Theatre. The energy and the enthusiasm from the audience seemed a little overwhelming, which immediately begs the question: what is it like to be on the receiving end of that kind of response? "I have to say, my favorite part in the show is the last 10 minutes," replies Erika Henningsen, who plays nice girl gone mean, but eventually redeemed, Cady Heron. "There are days when I think, 'Oh my God, I don't have the energy to do this.' It becomes such a marathon, but then in the last 10 minutes I get to speak to the cast — the full cast — in that Spring Fling number.

New Line scored a box office hit last fall with Horrible Bosses 2, so it makes a lot of sense that the studio would want to reteam the creative players behind that sequel on additional projects. Excitingly, the stars appear to be aligning already for one such reunion – director Sean Anders has been set to helm female-driven comedy Mean Moms, with Jennifer Aniston circling the lead role.
The A-lister has been eyeing the project, described as Mean Girls with an adult cast, since last February, but she’ll need to make a decision soon, given that New Line is revving up for a summer shoot. Aniston, who just lost out on an Oscar nomination for her transformative performance in dark drama Cake, reportedly has her pick of projects this summer, so it’s unclear whether Mean Moms is high on her list. At press time, no deal had been signed.

Quietly developing for a few years now, Mean Moms finally has a director in Horrible Bosses 2's Sean Anders. And he may be about to reteam with one of his stars from the comedy sequel, since Jennifer Aniston is in the frame for the leading role.Mean Moms is, to some extent, a belated follow-up to Mean Girls, since it's based on the non-fiction, self-help work of the same author, Rosalind Wiseman. Tina Fey adapted the 2004 film from Wiseman’s Queen Bees And Wannabees: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, And The New Realities Of Girl World. Mark Waters directed, Lindsay Lohan earned some kudos in the lead, and it was a big success for Paramount. There was a straight-to-video sequel in 2011.The new film takes as its source Wiseman's Queen Bee Moms And King Pin Dads: Dealing With The Parents, Teachers, Coaches, And Counselors Who Can Make — or Break — Your Child’s Future.

One sure sign of a film's legacy: Does it inspire its own holiday? If you happened to be anywhere near the Internet on Oct. 3, you probably noticed an outpouring of nostalgia for 2004's Mean Girls. The reason? A throwaway line uttered by Lindsay Lohan's Cady: "It's October 3rd." That may seem a pretty slim thread to hang an entire day on, but it's indicative of the fervent fan base for this new-classic teen comedy. Written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters (Vampire Academy), Mean Girls stars Lohan as a high school student at a new school who infiltrates the Plastics,...

Jennifer Aniston's new comedy Mean Moms has been delayed for release.
The Warner Bros and New Line co-production was due to hit cinemas on May 8, 2015, but the studio has confirmed that this date will now be pushed back (via The Wrap).
A new release date has yet to be decided, but New Line announced that they will now release MGM's untitled Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara comedy - previously known as Don't Mess with Texas - on May 8, 2015 instead.
Mean Moms, directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller, tells the story of a mother of two who moves to the suburbs from a small town, and is soon confronted with the world of competitive parenting.
The film is described as being similar to 2004's Mean Girls, as both are adapted from Rosalind Wiseman's advice books for parents.
However, Mean Moms will not be a sequel to the Lindsay Lohan comedy.

Warner Bros. has pushed the Jennifer Aniston comedy “Mean Moms” off its May 8, 2015 release date, the studio said Thursday. No new opening date has been set for the New Line comedy, which is directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller. The adult-themed “Mean Moms” is in the spirit of the 2004 comedy “Mean Girls,” and while it is not a sequel in any way, both projects are based on advice books by Rosalind Wiseman. Instead, Warner Bros. has slotted the Reese Witherspoon-Sofia Vergara buddy comedy once known as “Don't Mess With Texas” on that Mother's Day weekend. On Thursday, the studio announced.

"Fetch" may never have happened, but "Mean Girls" certainly did become a thing.

Tina Fey has clarified that there will be no Mean Girls reunion movie.
Star Lindsay Lohan fuelled rumours of some sort of 10th anniversary project on The Tonight Show last week, when she revealed that she'd been approached by Fey.
The Mean Girls writer has since clarified that she has no interest at all in writing a follow-up film.
"[There's] definitely not a movie," Fey told Access Hollywood. "It's just the anniversary is coming up, so everybody get your pink shirts. It's been 10 years. You can tell when you look at me it's been 10 years."
Fey added that a 10th anniversary commemoration could take some other form.
She explained: "I saw [Lindsay] at the first episode of The Tonight Show. We did that bit with Jimmy, and I said to her, 'Oh, I think someone may call us about doing some kind of reunion because next month is the tenth anniversary of the movie.

Take some of the Mean Girls we all knew in high school and have them all grown up and we get Mean Moms. No, this isn't exactly a spin-off of the fantastic 2004 comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, but the project does have source material hailing from author Rosalind Wiseman, who wrote Queen Bees and Wannabes, the book the film written by Tina Fey was based on. THR reports Mean Moms will be based on Queen Bee Moms and King Pin Dads, and will tell the story of a mother forced to deal with some adult versions of The Plastics in her suburban neighborhood, and Jennifer Aniston will be the star. Aniston has been on a role when it comes to comedies lately. Recent attempts to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle success of Mean Girls, from the direct-to-video sequel Mean Girls 2 to this month’s Vampire Academy, have met with varying degrees of catastrophic failure, but it’s understandable that studios want to keep trying, given the zeitgeist feel of the original. One such project gathering over at New Line actually sounds like it may have a pretty decent chance of finding success. Titled Mean Moms, it shares a few significant similarities with Mean Girls and just gained a huge star, with news that Jennifer Aniston has entered negotiations for a lead role.
The film will focus on a happily married mom who moves with her two kids from a small town to the wealthy suburbs. After moving in, she’s confronted with the vicious world of competitive parenting and finds herself surrounded by hostile soccer moms.

Back in 2010, New Line Cinema announced that it's moving forward with a sequel to "Mean Girls," called "Mean Moms," which will be directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller ("Modern Family," "30 Rock"). Now comes word that Jennifer Aniston is in talks to play the lead role, which is a mom who moves her family to a new town and is faced with confronting the cut throat world of competitive parenting. The new movie won't bring back any of the "Mean Girls" characters. "Mean Moms" is based on Rosalind Wiseman's 2006 book "Queen Bee Moms and King Pin Dads: Dealing with the Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Counselors Who Can Make -- or Break -- Your Child's Future," which aims at helping parents navigate between being overly passive and excessively protective.
