So … what’s a teaser, anyway?
A hallmark of the Super Bowl is big brands releasing a short teaser spot, teeing up their plans for the big game. BMW, in a new spot being released today teeing up its Super Bowl commercial, is taking that tradition and taking it to insidery new heights.
The teaser (titled: “Agent”) sees actor Christopher Walken walking through an ornate lobby, talking on the phone to his agent.
“What’s a teaser?” Walken asks. “So, it’s an ad for an ad? Why would they do that?” before turning toward the camera, and seeing the BMW logo flash on the screen.
Watch:
It isn’t exactly clear what BMW has planned for the Academy Award-winning actor (you’ll have to wait for Feb. 5 for that), but Walken has used his distinctive style and voice for Super Bowl ads before.

Updated with game-day versions, additional commercials. Super Sunday brought Madison Avenue’s annual spending spree, which has boosted the Big Game’s Hollywood quotient noticeably in recent years.
Celebrity product pitches date back to the days of leather helmets, of course, but in the increasingly rare air of the Super Bowl they have started to overtake the left-field breakouts of the past by the likes of Puppy Monkey Baby or beer-loving frogs. With Fox’s telecast commanding a peak level of more than 7 million for 30-second spots, producers and brands again are banking on stars in a big way. Super Bowl Lvii, a contest in Arizona between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, will feature commercials starring Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Melissa McCarthy, Anna Faris, Ben Stiller, Brie Larson, Steve Martin, Maya Rudolph and Miles and Keleigh Teller. Erin Andrews’ choices for wardrobe, hair and makeup for a Fox Sports Super Bowl broadcast have never been so important.
The veteran sportscaster had to decide on all those things last month — and her verdicts were of pivotal importance to the National Football League as it quietly crafted a two-minute commercial that, at least at first glance, looks like just another part of the Big Game. After wrapping a broadcast of the Apple Music halftime show with Rihanna, Fox appeared to launch an interview segment between Andrews and Diana Flores, the team quarterback of Mexico Women’s National Flag Football team.
It was anything but. The network — and the NFL — were really making an extra effort to capture viewers’ attention on a night when hundreds of others are trying to do the same.
During the interview, Andrews tells Flores, “You are so elusive. Is there anybody that can pull your flags?...

At the Golden Globes, “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho challenged audiences by saying, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” That obstacle may exist in most of the feature categories (where only “Parasite” and Pedro Almódovar’s “Pain & Glory” managed to clear the hurdle), but when it comes to shorts, the Academy doesn’t have quite the same hang-ups about whom to nominate. Sadly, that open-mindedness doesn’t seem to translate to voting. Just three foreign-language entries have earned the prize in the last decade, which should make voting in your Oscar pool relatively easy: It’s not the best, but “The Neighbors’ Window” is the only 2020 contender filmed in English. Now, , and easy to access via ShortsTV, which topped its own box office record with this latest batch.

Look closely: thematic bonds link this year’s five Best Live-Action Short Film contenders, even if they don’t appear to be tightly connected. There are the usual “kids in peril” offerings, a pair of differently-bent projects about modern connection and voyeurism, and a timely examination of what happens after war has seemingly ended.
And yet, for all the myriad tones and narratives tucked inside this year’s five compelling nominees, each of them is run through with one prevailing emotion: hope. It’s hope in many forms, of course, but each of the nominees is built on an hope for something better, something bigger, something more.
Of course, those desires don’t always lead into the easiest of situations, and not every character actively participates in even considering the possibility of dreaming of more, but nonetheless, this year’s live action shorts open windows into worlds all deserving of that next step.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

The Oscar shortlist released Monday for live action shorts offers a range of socially relevant and hot-button issues, including children and families in jeopardy, transgender identity, immigration, off-beat love stories, and animal shenanigans.
There are two French shorts about kids in jeopardy: In “Little Hands,” from Rémi Allier, the toddler son of a chemical factory director is abducted by a radical factory worker in a desperate attempt to keep the factory from closing. And, in Yves Pia’s feel-good comedy, “Nefta Football Club,” two boys intrude on a big drug score when they stumble on a donkey with headphones in the middle of the desert between Tunisia and Algeria.
Continuing with the family theme, “The Christmas Gift,” the Romanian short from Bogdan Muresanu, turns a family upside down when a young boy mails a letter to Santa during the brutal Ceausescu regime in 1989, asking for the dictator’s death. “Saria,...

The story of how an aspiring reporter with no journalism training became a leading authority on a subject few Western news outlets dared to cover, Bryan Buckley's The Pirates of Somalia entertainingly adapts the nonfiction book of the same title by Jay Badahur. Though the world's attention has moved on to other geopolitical hotspots and to domestic issues more terrifying than kidnappings off the Horn of Africa, this stranger-in-a-strange-land adventure has enough appeal to sustain its limited theatrical release, where the popularity of star Evan Peters (of American Horror Story) should help compensate for a seemingly miniscule promotional campaign.

"You want to make it as some big journalist, you gotta go somewhere crazy." Crystal Sky Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for an indie dramatic thriller titled The Pirates of Somalia, from writer/director Bryan Buckley (The Bronze). The film tells the "incredible true story" of rookie journalist Jay Bahadur, who in 2008 decided to go to Somalia to embed himself among the pirates there. He ultimately succeeds in providing the first close-up look into who these men are, how they live, and the forces that drive them. Evan Peters stars as journalist Jay Bahadur, and of course they got Somalian native Barkhad Abdi to star as his local fixer. The cast also includes Coral Peña, Philip Ettinger, Russell Posner, Melanie Griffith, and Al Pacino. This actually looks better than expected, so far so good, I am honestly intrigued. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Bryan Buckley's The Pirates of Somalia,...

Opening with a voice-over explaining how a recent University of Toronto graduate went from surveying supermarket clerks about display placements to a becoming a freelance journalist running around Somalia, Bryan Buckley’s Dabka attempts to playfully tell the story of Jay Bahadur, author of The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World. Dabka takes an aggressive, masculine tone (one that’s almost, but not quite, frat boy-esque) that at times reminded me of Todd Phillips’ War Dogs, and it may be fitting. Here is the real-life story of a guy that finds himself miraculously with too much access and, at the same time, in over his head, and that charm (as well as naivety and lack of context), certainly helps in difficult situations.

You know who might be having a big 2017 in film? Barkhad Abdi. He has three interesting projects coming out, starting with Dabka which will play this month at the Tribeca Film Festival. Written and directed by Bryan Buckley (The Bronze) it’s the true story of a reporter’s risk-taking adventure that gave him an unprecedented first-person account of the pirates of Somalia. Evan Peters plays the reporter Jay Bahadur on whose best selling book, The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World, the film is based. Abdi plays a local fixer who helped Bahadur embed himself with the Somali pirates. So he hasn’t gone very far from the world of his Oscar nominated performance in Captain Phillips (2013).

There’s a kernel of a good idea in Bryan Buckley‘s The Bronze — in fact, scratch that — there’s a whole bunch of kernels of various good ideas in the raunchy comedy, though most of them lay unpopped throughout the bloated, unflinchingly fucked up feature, like a giant bag of particularly bad movie theater popcorn. Buckley’s debut feature tries to tackle far too much for its own good, both in terms of basic narration and its a series of increasingly off-kilter tonal choices. A dark comedy about stunted adulthood and the diminishing returns of success, The Bronze shows promise, though it ultimately limps off the screen, much like its lead character. Melissa Rauch stars in the film (which she co-wrote alongside her husband, Winston Raunch) as former Olympian (bronze medalist, obviously) Hope Annabelle Greggory, the hometown pride of a teensy Ohio burg that doesn’t have much else going for it beyond that one time...

Chicago – She’s conquered television, and now it’s time for the movies. Melissa Rauch – also known as Bernadette on “The Big Bang Theory” – has created a new, uniquely voiced character named Hope Greggory. The character is a third placed, foul-mouthed Olympic gymnast in the new film “The Bronze.”
The film has an one-of-a-kind angle. Hope Greggory goes to the 2004 Olympics out of Amherst, Ohio, with the help of her Dad Stan (Gary Cole) and Coach Pavlek (Christine Abrahamsen). After a showy injury at the Games, she holds on to take the Bronze medal, and gets seemingly lifelong celebrity in her hometown. Fast forward to 2015 – the shine is off the medal, and a new gymnast sensation in town named Maggie (Haley Lu Richardson) is threatening to take Hope’s territory. Hope agrees to coach her, but can lightning strike twice?

This summer is sure to produce an onslaught of mindless trash disguised as comedy. Adam Sandler will make more cool millions, Paul Blart will potentially earn more undeserved revenue, and comedic celebrities who have shone in better films will be paired off with one another in disposable, asinine movies the world will forget almost as soon as they're released. Somewhere in the shuffle will be the far more understated opening of The Bronze, which director Bryan Buckley estimates will have its release some time in July. Those who choose to buy the ticket will be vastly rewarded for their choice. Simply put, The Bronze is uproariously funny. Penned by spouses Melissa and Winston Rauch and starring Melissa Rauch, The Bronze refreshingly recalls a golden age...

If any of you are fans of The Big Bang Theory, then you probably also are a fan of Melissa Rauch. She has been an asset on that show for some time now as the squeaky voiced Bernadette Rostenkowski, but this weekend, Rauch shows off her skills in a whole new way with The Bronze, a comedy she co-wrote and stars in. It debuted last year the Sundance Film Festival, with its release finally coming our way on Friday. The movie should introduce her to a whole new audience, with the possibility existing that Rauch could wind up the next huge thing in big screen comedies. The Bronze is a raunchy comedy centering on former Olympic gymnastics bronze medalist Hope Ann Gregory (Rauch). Ever since then, she’s been living off of the fame that got her, residing in the small town she grew up in and essentially living in a state of arrested development.

Danny McBride is no stranger to stepping outside of comedy with Up in the Air, All the Real Girls, and more, but he’s now set to dive into something quite unexpected. The Wrap reports he’s in talks to join Ridley Scott‘s Alien: Covenant with Michael Fassbender returning and Katherine Waterston taking on a new female lead role. While the Eastbound & Down star’s role isn’t specified, the October 2017-bound films follows the crew of the colony ship Covenant as they come across a dangerous planet occupied solely by Fassbender’s David.
Speaking of Fassbender, after he dropped out of The Mountains Between Us and then Charlie Hunnam doing the same, 20th Century Fox is looking at a new lead. Sony Pictures Classics has released the new poster from the upcoming comedy The Bronze, starring Melissa Rauch, Gary Cole, Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, Cecily Strong and Haley Lu Richardson.
Below is the red-band trailer for the film opening in theaters March 18, 2016.
A decade ago, Hope Ann Greggory (Melissa Rauch) was America’s sweetheart. Her inspired performance on a ruptured Achilles at the world’s most prestigious gymnastics tournament clinched an unlikely bronze medal for the U.S. team and brought glory to her hometown of Amherst, Ohio. But in the years since that epic third place victory, Hope hasn’t done a whole lot with her life. Still living in her dad Stan’s (Gary Cole) basement, still sporting her daily uniform of a Team USA gym suit with teeny-bopper bangs, ponytail and scrunchie, she spends her days at the mall milking her minor celebrity for free food and favors.

Sony Pictures Classics will release Bryan Buckley‘s raunchy comedy “The Bronze” in select cities starting March 18, 2016 — 14 months after its Sundance debut. The film was acquired by Relativity out of Sundance but became an unfortunate victim of the circumstances when Ryan Kavanaugh‘s company was forced to file bankruptcy. Sony Classics came to the rescue to give the well-received film a proper release. Melissa Rauch of “The Big Bang Theory” stars alongside Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, Gary Cole, Haley Lu Richardson and Cecily Strong. "I'm not a coach, I'm a star!" Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled a red band (for language!) trailer for the indie comedy The Bronze, which was an opening night film at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Melissa Rauch plays Hope Anne Greggory, a gymnast who won the bronze at the Olympics once, and now lives with the glory of that fame. The cast includes Gary Cole, Haley Lu Richardson, Thomas Middleditch and Sebastian Stan. This film just isn't that good, it's not that funny, and the trailer doesn't help sell it at all. Maybe a few people out there who enjoy this kind of trashy humor may be interested in this, but I doubt it. Here's the first red band trailer for Bryan Buckley's The Bronze, found via The Film Stage: A foul-mouthed former gymnastics bronze medalist named Hope Annabelle Greggory (Melissa Rauch) must fight for her local celebrity status...

After last year’s Whiplash opened the Sundance Film Festival and went on to become one of 2014’s best films, hopes were high that the festival would continue the trend this year. 2015 brought The Bronze, a gymnast comedy from director Bryan Buckley and starring Melissa Rauch, Gary Cole, Thomas Middleditch, and Sebastian Stan. Following a former Olympian who is down on her luck, unfortunately it was far from measuring up.
We said in our review, “There simply aren’t enough female-led anti-hero stories. They’re always refreshing to see, because we’ve already witnessed plenty of tortured males trying to succeed. The Bronze attempts to be one of them, but, unfortunately, its flawed hero is hardly ever engaging.” We added, “As a character study, The Bronze doesn’t hit its mark — even worse, it fails as a comedy. Certain scenes and jokes are far too extended, killing the timing and...
