Exclusive: Mario Tabraue, one of the controversial characters in Netflix’s Tiger King and a former drug trafficker widely hailed as the inspiration for Al Pacino’s Tony Montana in Scarface, is to be the subject of a limited series.
The Traveling Picture Show Company (Tpsc), the company behind Bryan Bertino’s horror feature The Dark & The Wicked, has acquired Tabraue’s life rights and teamed with Anonymous Content to develop the drama project.
Adam Penn, who has written on American Horror Story and Mr. Robot, is writing the series, which will follow Tabraue’s life from his younger days through his drug trafficking and prison years all the way up to present day.

After almost a decade trapped in development hell, the latest Scarface remake is finally gathering momentum. Suspiria and Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino has been on board since May after David Yates, Antoine Fuqua and David Ayer all attempted to get the project off the ground and follow in the footsteps of Howard Hawks’ 1932 original and Brian De Palma’s 1983 classic, which turned Al Pacino’s Tony Montana into a staple of dorm room walls around the world.
During the earlier iterations of Scarface, Rogue One‘s Diego Luna was attached to the lead role, but several months ago, reports were making the rounds that Michael B. Jordan was being eyed to headline another modern day update of the tale, which will presumably adopt the same narrative path as the previous two movies and offer a twisted parable on the American Dream, with Guadagnino already admitting that...

One big issue that a lot of people might have when it comes to remaking some of the more classic movies from decades past is that it does feel like they’re trying to reinvent the wheel and give it a few major updates that might make it appear to be a little better than the original. The downside here is that trying to top the original Scarface might feel like a slap in the face to a lot of fans that loved Tony Montana as he was and don’t really want to see another actor take the role. Even bringing

Universal have been trying to get another remake of Scarface off the ground for almost a decade at this point, with David Ayer first being tapped to write the script back in 2011. Several filmmakers were linked to the project over the years, including Harry Potter‘s David Yates, Jackie‘s Pablo Larrain and The Equalizer‘s Antoine Fuqua, while Ayer himself was attached to step behind the camera at one stage before that particular version was abandoned.
In 2018, it was revealed that the Coen brothers were handling the latest draft, and in March of this year, Suspiria‘s Luca Guadagnino signed on to direct. The Call Me by Your Name helmer has been talking up the project in several recent interviews, but it was never made clear if the Coens were still on writing duties or Fuqua’s casting choice of Rogue One‘s Diego Luna would remain.

“Scarface” occupies an interesting place in film history. While the idea of remakes is often debated by film fans, with many claiming that these films are completely unnecessary, Brian De Palma’s “Scarface” is often cited as the remake that shatters that myth. And even with the fact that De Palma’s film is a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 original, there were still people that scoffed at the idea of Luca Guadagnino taking over a brand-new film based on the story of Tony Montana, questioning the need for a third “Scarface.” But in a new interview with the filmmaker, Guadagnino explains thoroughly why people need to stop thinking about his “Scarface” as a remake of De Palma or Hawks’ features.

Brian De Palma’s Scarface has long since consolidated a reputation as one of the defining movies of the 1980s, an extravagant ode to excess and the American Dream that turned Al Pacino’s Tony Montana into a cinematic legend thanks to his unforgettably over-the-top performance.
The cult classic was itself a remake of a largely-forgotten 1932 gangster movie directed by the legendary Howard Hawks and produced by Howard Hughes, which already shows that the story is more than capable of being reinvented. However, there are a lot of people that find the idea of a new version of Scarface to be completely unnecessary, but recently-appointed director Luca Guadagnino disagrees.

Only in the comics could this ever, Ever work. Those of us that have watched the movie Scarface with Al Pacino, and there are a lot of us to be certain, saw the infamous gangster and drug peddler get shot at point-blank range in the back and finally ended in the movie. In the comics however someone wasn’t quite done with him since apparently the story goes that Tony’s body was so doped up that it forgot to die at one point, which allowed doctors to bring him back after losing him twice on the operating table and removing at

The funny thing about the Scarface movie is that the original was inspired by an actual person despite being made into a fiction. Al Capone was nicknamed Scarface and he absolutely hated it according to those that knew him the best. But decades later another Scarface was made in the early 80s featuring a Cuban named Tony Montana that came to America and started taking over the cocaine scene. As Kevin Burwick of MovieWeb has put it however this upcoming movie will be based in La and will continue the tradition of the immigrant’s story as a single individual makes

It appears the Scarface remake has a new friend in the director’s chair, but his resume isn’t that little. Indeed, Universal Pictures announced Thursday that Luca Guadagnino, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, has been tapped to direct the long-gestating Scarface reboot.
The news comes paired with the announcement that Guadagnino will be working from the version of the screenplay written by Joel and Ethan Coen, who know a thing or two about crime dramas after making such films as Fargo and No Country for Old Men. Their version is additionally built off earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman, and Paul Attanasio.
The hiring of Guadagnino is the latest chapter in an ever-growing saga of musical director chairs on the project. A new Scarface remake has long been a priority for Universal Pictures, which first began developing the film in 2011. In addition to various screenplay drafts,...

Universal has been developing a reboot of Scarface for several years now, with the Coen brothers set to write the screenplay. For a while, though, they’ve had trouble finding a director, with both David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and Peter Berg, among others, flirting with the project since it sprung to life.
But today, they’ve finally secured someone to get behind the camera, as Variety reports that Luca Guadagnino, who recently freaked us all out with the excellent Suspiria remake, will helm this new take on the classic crime thriller. And while no further details were revealed and casting still remains unknown, hopefully things will begin to fall into place now that they have a director.

Call Me By Your Name Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino is now set to direct Universal Pictures’ reimagination of Scarface.
The studio has been in development on the project for quite some time, going back to 2011, with David Ayer and Antoine Fuqua previously attached at directors as Deadline has broken the news on this project over various points. United Artists distributed the 1932 Howard Hawks-Richard Rosson movie, while Universal released the iconic 1983 Brian De Palma movie that starred Al Pacino as Cuban gangster Tony Montana.
In the 1932 Scarface, an Italian (Paul Muni) took over Chicago, and in the De Palma remake, Montana cornered the cocaine trade in 1980s Miami, only to be consumed by it.
The new movie will be set in Los Angeles. The pic’s shooting script will be off of Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s version, who’ve been with the project for at least three years,...

The star-studded biopic Capone is due to be released via digital platforms on May 12th. Tom Hardy plays Al Capone in his later years in the movie and he looks fantastic. Linda Cardellini, Kyle MacLachlan, and Matt Dillon co-star. Al Capone is America’s best-known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.

The stories from Tiger King keep getting wilder, and we need to talk about Mario Tabraue's claim that he was the inspiration for Scarface. The former drug dealer claims to have inspired the famous movie character - but is he telling the truth? We're taking a look at the evidence to try to find out how much of his claims are true.
Tabraue, the founder of Miami's Zoological Wildlife Foundation, makes an outright claim in the docuseries, saying, "sometimes they say that I'm the prototype for Scarface," aka Al Pacino's famous character in the 1983 movie of the same name. Clips of the movie are interspersed with Tabraue's story, presumably to highlight the connections between the two. While the clips certainly seem to paint a clear picture, the reality is probably a lot more complicated than that.

In a certain light, all filmmakers–even the most successful–are con artists as heart, convincing investors, a crew, and performers to go along for the ride with a tremendous amount of uncertainty. Martha Shane’s enlightening documentary Narrowsburg looks at a couple’s desire to start a “Sundance of the East,” very likely without having ever attended Sundance and fully understanding the amount of work that it takes. There are film festivals like this, and in the interest of full disclosure yours truly is the artistic director of a regional film festival and every year we struggle to make sure our filmmakers have realistic expectations for how things will go. The Narrowsburg International Independent Film Festival, and the film the town produced, Four Deadly Reasons, is a textbook study in what can go wrong when you prey on the expectations of small-town residents who get sucked in by a snake oil salesman.

Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

SAG-AFTRA’s national board is weighing action on a convention resolution that condemned “recent threats of violence and use of violent imagery” during the union’s latest elections.
Approved over the weekend, the resolution urged the board to “take whatever action it deems appropriate to address what has occurred and ensure that similar violent threats do not reoccur; and consider adoption of a rule designed to deter and prevent such conduct.”
The board has been meeting today and will meet again on Tuesday.
The resolution, which was co-sponsored by SAG-aftra president Gabrielle Carteris, stems from an alleged threat against Carteris during the campaign in which a member tweeted: “Let’s get rid of her once and for all!” The tweet included a clip from Scarface, in which Al Pacino’s Tony Montana blasts a roomful of armed men after yelling, “Say hello to my little friend!”

Delegates to this week’s SAG-AFTRA biennial convention will be voting on dozens of proposed resolutions, including one that appears to be aimed directly at President Donald Trump, who has called numerous news organizations – including CNN, NBC, CBS and ABC – “the enemy of the American people.” Trump, who is a member of the union, isn’t mentioned by name, however.
“We are living in an extraordinary time when the news media has been attacked as spreading false stories and as an enemy of the people,” the sponsors of Resolution #1 said in their statement of support. “SAG-aftra has, on at least two occasions since our last national convention, issued strong statements on behalf of a free and unencumbered press. This is an opportunity to have our National Convention — the largest and most representative governing body in our union — underscore those previous statements and issue full-throated support for the principles...

SAG-AFTRA national executive director David White has condemned a social media post that he described as a “threat” against Gabrielle Carteris, the union’s recently re-elected president.
“It has come to our attention that elected leaders have been threatened,” he said in an email to the guild’s board of directors. “The threats range from one leader who was approached, verbally assaulted and then followed by a fellow member, to the most recent example of certain members asserting via social media posts that we should ‘get rid of’ our president ‘once and for all’ accompanied by a violent video Gif depicting someone shooting up a room full of people.”
The tweet in question was posted on Saturday by actress Daria Rumi, which then was retweeted Sunday by Adam Nelson, the spokesman for defeated Membership First presidential candidate Matthew Modine. Nelson, who is a member of the union, has apologized,...

Drug addiction and crime are so closely knitted to each other that a descend into either of them eventually leads to the other. It’s tempting to think we’ve seen it all when it comes to gangster movies — the Tommy-gunning tough guys, the cosa nostra capos and cutthroats, the tattooed yakuza hard men, the cartel-to-Chinese-triad thug lifers, the coked-out kingpins with their Everest-sized blow piles and ballistic “little friends.” Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s stunning, sumptuous Birds of Passage isn’t out to reinvent the wheel regarding drug-lord narratives, nor is it asking Tony Montana to hold its beer. But what it brings to the party by setting its near-folkloric narco...

Upon its 1983 release, Scarface cemented Al Pacino's star status and turned actress Michelle Pfeiffer into a household name. The story of Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant in 1980s Miami who eventually becomes an unruly drug kingpin, is one of excruciating highs and moral lows. The character's excessive use of cocaine, profanity and violence shocked audiences across the country — a gritty rendering of the American dream against the backdrop of Reagan's presidency.
Despite its initial tepid response from critics, Scarface went on to become a commercial success, grossing more than $126.5 million domestically when adjusted for inflation....

I have to say, I never got sucked into identifying with criminals like Henry Hill and Tony Montana. I knew drugs and murder were bad so as entertaining as their stories were, I never felt bad for them when it came crashing down. Lee Israel at her worst only defrauded some pretentious art collectors so I’m not too torn up about her story. When author Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) sells a letter a celebrity wrote her, and then another she found in an archive, she realizes the collector’s market is big business. So she starts forging letters to make a […]

Romain Gavras’ “The World Is Yours” might take its title from a certain gangster classic — or its blood-soaked Brian De Palma remake, which only made a life of crime seem that much cooler — but this wildly infectious French heist comedy is pretty much the anti-“Scarface.” A hyper-stylish and unexpectedly sweet rebuke to the idea that screwing people is a good way to get ahead, Gavras’ second feature manages the almost impossible task of mining something nice from the me-first mentality that’s been sweeping across modern Europe. It’s “Sexy Beast,” “Spring Breakers,” and “Little Miss Sunshine” all blended together and served with a lad-rock swagger; it’s the best movie that Guy Ritchie never made.
Whereas Tony Camonte (or Tony Montana) came to the game as a refugee looking to make a name for himself, François (Karim Leklou) was born into a dog-eat-dog underworld full of killers and cheats.

A little over three decades ago Tony Montana came to the screen in a big way and managed to share the spotlight with a few other actors that were allowed to shine in the movie Scarface. That iconic movie has been on the lips of many a person throughout the years since it left a very noticeable mark in the public consciousness and has for a long time been considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. But where are the actors as of now? A good number of them have been on a roll ever since, while

The ornate Beacon Theatre served as the perfect setting for the Tribeca Film Festival’s 35th Anniversary of “Scarface,” Brian De Palma’s baroque epic of American greed. The film’s wide and enduring appeal was evident in the diversity of the rowdy, sold-out crowd, which even featured some confrontations during the movie over Tony Montana acolytes in the crowd quoting dialogue aloud.
After the film, Tony himself (Al Pacino) joined the crowd along with Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer), Manny (Steven Bauer), and Brian De Palma to discuss the film.

Scarface fans didn't need mounds of cocaine to pump themselves up to see Al Pacino; Michelle Pfeiffer; director Brian De Palma; and co-star Steven Bauer, who played Pacino's character's gangster sidekick Manny, at a 35th anniversary screening of the beloved drug kingpin drama at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The packed, sold-out audience at New York's Beacon Theatre cheered throughout a postscreening discussion with the cast (and booed at one poorly worded question from the moderator, writer Jesse Kornbluth) and even gave Pacino a standing ovation as he took the stage.

One of the Tribeca Film Festival’s greatest draws in recent years has been cast reunions for some of cinema’s most treasured modern films. Last year, the festival screened all three “Godfather” films before reuniting director Frances Ford Coppola with the remaining cast for an onstage panel. This year, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Brian De Palma’s “Scarface,” De Palma was reunited with stars Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Steven Bauer to look back the iconic gangster classic.
After a Thursday evening screening of the film at New York City’s Beacon Theater, the stars came out for a Q&A and were greeted with rapturous applause and cheers. Pacino, who plays Cuban gangster Tony Montana in the film, was given a standing ovation when he came out and greeted the crowd.

Reprising some familiar stories but filling in plenty of fond nuance, the lead actors and director of Scarface marked the film’s 35th anniversary with a crowd-pleasing Q&A session Thursday night at the Tribeca Film Festival.
After a screening of the 1983 film, director Brian De Palma joined Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Steven Bauer (who played Tony Montana’s gangster partner) to reminisce. As they were brought onstage one by one, the sold-out Beacon Theatre crowd let out loud, concert-worthy roars and gave Pacino a standing ovation before anyone had uttered a word.
“Bombast was part of what we were trying to say with the movie,” Pacino said. “It was bigger than life.”
Pacino recalled stumbling on the original 1932 Scarface when it was playing at the long-shuttered Tiffany Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. Seeing star Paul Muni on screen, he remembered thinking, “I want to be him!

Updated with details from sheriff’s department statement: Disgraced actor Kevin Spacey is under investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office for an alleged sex crime. To date, dozens of men have come forward with allegations that Spacey groped or assaulted them sexually – many when they were boys. Nearly all – if not all – of those alleged incidents, however, occurred years ago and fall well beyond the one-year statute of limitations.
“A case was presented April 5 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” a spokesman for the Da’s office said. “It’s under review.” According to an La County sheriff’s statement, the department’s Special Victims Bureau began an investigation into allegations of a sexual assault involving Spacey on December 11, 2017. The events were reported to have taken place in October of 1992 in West Hollywood involving a male adult.

The California Film Commission announced Monday that nine upcoming films have received tax credits to shoot in the Golden State as part of California’s expanded Film & TV Tax Credit Program.
Among the films receiving credits are the upcoming remake of “Scarface” — which will see the story of Tony Montana moved from Miami to L.A. — the film adaptation of the acclaimed HBO series “Deadwood,” and an untitled Universal film directed by “Get Out” filmmaker Jordan Peele as part of his exclusive deal with the studio.

In 2014, California Gov. Jerry Brown approved revisions to the Film Commission’s tax credit program in response to an exodus of higher budget films to other states like Georgia. The new system allows projects previously barred from credit by the old program to be eligible, including TV pilots, hour-long TV series, and most notably, feature films with budgets of more than $75 million.
This has led major Hollywood studios to return to California for some of their projects, including Marvel Studios, which has filmed most of their recent work at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta but is filming next year’s “Captain Marvel” in California. Disney also filmed Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle In Time,” which had a budget of $103 million, in California as well.

Another upcoming film that has just received credit but would have been ineligible under the old system is Fox’s action-drama “Ford vs. Ferrari.” Reporting a production budget of $78 million, the film will tell the true story of the intense rivalry between Ford and Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans after Enzo Ferrari refused to let Henry Ford II buy his company, resulting in Ford upsetting the Italian company at the race by designing the iconic Ford Gt.
Other high-budget projects that have received credit include Fox’s upcoming adaptation of Jack London’s “Call of the Wild,” Paramount’s next “Transformers” film “Bumblebee,” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”
The next application period for feature film tax credits will be held June 18-22.

In a surprise to nobody, Universal has officially dropped the summer 2018 release date it had planned for its latest remake of Scarface. Given that it’s been without a director since Suicide Squad’s David Ayer left the film last summer, and not a frame of footage had been shot, the delay was expected.
