It's Christmas of 1971, and students Clara (Georgia Acken) and Samantha (Madison Baines) are stuck at the Blackvale School for Girls with their empathetic teacher (Chloë Levine) and the school's resourceful chef (Gus Kenworthy). But while the quartet does their best to embrace the spirit of the season, a sacrificial cult led by Maisie (Olivia Scott Welch) and Jude (Mena Massoud) soon arrives on their front step with sinister intentions that are far more scary than any door-to-door Christmas carolers... although by the end of the night it just might be the cult members who wish they had never crashed the festivities at the Blackvale School for Girls.

When our own JimmyO interviewed director Ti West and star Mia Goth about their X (watch it at This Link) prequel Pearl (watch that one Here), West said that he and Goth crafted the script for Pearl together while he was spending two weeks in quarantine before he could start working on X in New Zealand. They would discuss the story and the Pearl character over FaceTime, then work on the script. During an appearance at the Savannah College of Art and Design during the 25th Scad Savannah Film Festival, Goth talked more about the scripting process – and revealed that the creepy smile Pearl gives at the end of the film was something West just thought of when they were on set that day.
If you have watched Pearl – and you should, as both JimmyO and Martin Scorsese recommend it – you’ll surely remember the moment where Goth delivers a...

A24 will be giving director Ti West’s Pearl, a prequel to his film X (which was released earlier this year, and now you can watch it at This Link), a theatrical release on September 16th… and since I loved X, I’m hyped to check this one out. In anticipation of the film’s quickly approaching release date, a batch of new images from Pearl have shown up on the film’s IMDb page, and you can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Mia Goth, who played Pearl in Ti West’s horror slasher X for A24, is back to reveal the origins of her iconic villain character in Pearl, which dropped its trailer ahead of a Sept. 16, 2022 release.
“Please Lord, make me the biggest star the world has ever known,” a young Pearl says at one point in the trailer, before we see her pushing an old man in a wheelchair to the end of a pier alongside an alligator-infested lake.
Director West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X, as we see Pearl trapped on her family’s isolated farm. The young woman must care for her ailing father amid the overbearing scrutiny of her devout mother.

“X,” a new horror movie from A24 and director Ti West that stars Mia Goth, has already filmed a surprise prequel movie that was unveiled following the film’s premiere at SXSW on Sunday.
A24 is releasing “X” in theaters on Friday, but after the world premiere, the film was accompanied by footage that announced an upcoming prequel. It’s already been shot in secret and on location in New Zealand, and will have Goth reprising her role. Ti West also wrote and directed the prequel, which is in post-production now.
“X” is the story of a group of young filmmakers in 1979 who set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, only for their reclusive, elderly hosts to catch them in the act, forcing the cast to fight for their lives.
Early reviews have praised the horror movie as a darkly humorous and bloody homage to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The set of “Rust” seemed to produce an unending list of tragic circumstances, snafus, and gaffes: the camera crew quitting in protest over work conditions; the prop gun that fired a bullet, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins; the mix of 500 blanks, dummy rounds and suspected live rounds collected on the set by Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, and even the custom T-shirts reportedly ordered by production staff mocking crew requests for hotel rooms. At this point, “Rust” producer and star Alec Baldwin may be alone in his assertion about his film with a reported budget of under $7 million: “We were a very, very well-oiled crew.”

While at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with the cast and crew from co-writer/director Jenn Wexler’s punk slasher The Ranger, which follows a group of rebellious teens into the woods as they square off against a murderous forest ranger who doesn’t take kindly to folks who don’t like to follow the rules of his wooded domain.
Wexler is no stranger to the realm of indie filmmaking, as she’s been a producer on numerous movies at Glass Eye Pix, and we heard from her about making the transition to director for her newest project and putting the film together with the cast and crew that were also in attendance for the press day for The Ranger, including her co-writer Giaco Furino, producers Heather Buckley, Andrew van den Houten, Ashleigh Snead, Chad Ghiron, and Darryl Gariglio, as well as cast members Chloe Levine,...

For the past six years, genre moviemakers and moneymen have congregated for long weekends at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, taking part in the Frontières Co-Production Marketplace. Founded in 2012, the market was conceived as a place for horror/fantasy/action auteurs — both established names and newcomers — to pitch projects to potential backers and take part in various networking events.
A highlight of the Market is the opening-day pitch session, in which selected directors, writers, and producers offer multimedia presentations of their nascent features. At the very first Frontières, this event spawned Anouk Whissell, Francois Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s exuberant futuristic actioner “Turbo Kid”; subsequent movies that took their first steps to fruition there include Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s cult/monster horror film “The Void”; Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard’s science-fiction thriller “Radius,” which premiered at this year’s Fantasia; and Jenn Wexler’s upcoming punk-slasher opus “The Ranger.

The benefits and potential downfalls of film funds and the strength of genre films were among topics covered during Frontières panel at Bifff, hosted by Eave and moderated by Tailored Films’ Ruth Treacy.
House of Netherhorror’s Jan Doense noted that one of the benefits of film funds in the European market when it came to genre films was that as it was soft money, they generally give “more artistic freedom”.
“The system gives the opportunity for original ideas to get funded in an easier way than in North America where there isn’t the support of a film fund.”
However, Xyz Films’ Todd Brown countered that support from film funds does have a potential downfall. “It’s certainly the company line about giving creative freedom, but what I see in Canada all the time is that it creates a cycle of dependence. Producers developing projects according to the tastes of the funding body as opposed to the...
