Decades after their fathers last collaborated, John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s sons have put out a new song. James McCartney and Sean Ono Lennon have brought back the famous Lennon-McCartney songwriting credit on “Primrose Hill,” their new single. Here’s what James McCartney — and his father — have said about the song.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s sons have a new song
In 2024, James McCartney released “Primrose Hill,” a song he co-wrote with Sean Ono Lennon.
“I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summer’s day,” he wrote in a post on Instagram. “Letting go, I saw my true love and saviour in my mind’s eye. ‘Primrose Hill’ is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person.”

Both Sean and James have worked as solo artists for years, but “Primrose Hill” is their first collaboration.

In India, The Beatles were not regular tourists. They stayed at an ashram (monastery) in the holy city of Rishikesh to learn about spirituality from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. One of The Beatles’ companions said the Fab Four had issues with the press. The Indian Army intervened, but even they couldn’t get rid of all of the reporters.
A guru got a local army in India to help The Beatles
Several other celebrities were present during The Beatles’ trip. They included actor Mia Farrow, Mike Love of The Beach Boys, and folk singer Donovan. Donovan had a string of hits between 1965 and 1969. They included “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” “Sunshine Superman,” “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow,” and “There Is a Mountain.”
During a 2016 interview with Vulture, Donovan shared some anecdotes from Rishikesh. “No press managed to break into the ashram when we were all there,” he said.

George Harrison was rarely a provocateur, however, he called his final album Brainwashed. Accusing anyone of being brainwashed is pretty bold! One of George’s British Invasion peers explained the origin of that memorable title. Notably, it had a connection to George’s spiritual views.
Donovan said George Harrison’s album ‘Brainwashed’ was a reaction to materialism
Two kindred spirits in the 1960s counterculture were George Harrison and Donovan. Both artists were folk-rockers who explored spirituality through their songs. George’s songs were often expressions of his Hindu faith, whereas Donovan sang about common New Age topics like Atlantis and witchcraft. Both of them were also environmentalists.
During a 2018 interview with Goldmine, the “Mellow Yellow” singer discussed his feelings about the planet and George’s — and what they both learned from the books they read. “That the older generation was destroying the ecosystem with no consideration whatsoever for the inner world of plants,...

When John Lennon’s second son, Sean, was born in 1975, his father had been one of the most famous people in the world for well over a decade. While The Beatles had announced their breakup in 1970, public interest in a reunion hadn’t waned. They were still a globally beloved band. Still, Sean knew very little about this. Lennon explained that he never talked about the band to his son. He never even played their records around the house. Lennon explained the straightforward reason why he avoided the subject.
John Lennon avoided talking about The Beatles around his son
Lennon’s first son, Julian, grew up in the midst of Beatlemania — it was impossible for him not to notice his father’s fame. Sean, however, was born after the band broke up. Lennon said he didn’t see why it was necessary to talk about his former band with his younger child.

George Harrison’s son, Dhani, grew up surrounded by legendary musicians. Harrison had many friends in the industry who would visit often, and Dhani got to know many stars that the average person could only dream of meeting. Reflecting on his childhood, Dhani said it was “mindbending” to see so many rock stars just casually hanging out in his house.

George Harrison was friends with many classic rock stars. In addition to the other members of The Beatles, Harrison was also close with the members of The Traveling Wilburys, which included Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. He was also close friends with guitarist Eric Clapton.
Since he worked closely with these excellent musicians, they often recorded and rehearsed at his home studio.

During the peak of Beatlemania, The Beatles took over the world with their popularity. In the late 1970s, Star Wars did the same, as the original trilogy captivated audiences worldwide. Beatles’ guitarist George Harrison was a major Star Wars fan, and that passion extended to his son, Dhani, who said his father was like the wise Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

With the release of his album Around the World in a Day, many critics wondered if Prince was taking inspiration from The Beatles. They hadn’t inspired him to make the album, and while he acknowledged that they were influential artists, he didn’t know that they would have been successful in the decades after their split. Years after making these remarks, though, Prince proved himself wrong.

George Harrison earned a few nicknames with The Beatles. The quiet one, the shy one, the third Beatle, and the most easy-going Beatle. Whatever name people called him, at least one thing was true — he was a talented songwriter who was overshadowed by his older songwriting bandmates. That didn’t prevent George from being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 14, 2009, a second prestigious posthumous honor for one of Liverpool’s most famous sons.

Each of the Beatles had children, and, as with many celebrities, they found careers similar to their parents. While some have found success in other industries — notably fashion and photography — many of the Beatles’ children also became musicians. Here are the Beatles children who followed in their fathers’ footsteps.

John Lennon’s first child, and the firstborn Beatles child, Julian Lennon, began his music career in 1984, not long after his father’s death. His debut album, Valotte, found great success and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1985.
Julian released several other albums, though Valotte remains his most successful. Like his father, he primarily sticks to the rock genre. He also tackled one of Lennon’s most famous songs in 2022. He had initially vowed to never cover “Imagine,” but with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, he...

George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” was released on Nov. 23, 1970, as the first single to his groundbreaking and historic solo album. The Beatles were the first band to play stadium concerts, put backwards instrumentation into songs, and the first rock band to put sitar and tamboura drones in pop rock. But Harrison’s first solo release after the band’s break up, All Things Must Pass, was the first triple album coming from a single act in rock. “My Sweet Lord,” was the first number one hit by a solo Beatle and the biggest selling single of 1971. It is most renowned because of the trendsetting plagiarism suit around it, but the song transcends easy labels.

As Klaus Voormann recalls, the bass player, artist, and friend of the Beatles had no idea what was about to hit him when he arrived at Emi Studios (later known as Abbey Road) one day in late May of 1970. All he knew was that George Harrison was about to start a new project and that Ringo Starr would be drumming. Before he realized it, Voormann was rehearsing a bunch of unheard Harrison songs — one after another, 15 in all, including “What Is Life,” “Awaiting on You All,” and “My Sweet Lord.

When George Harrison went into the studio in 1970 to make All Things Must Pass, he was a man on a mission. He’d spent years waiting for this moment. George had so many songs saved up from his years in the Beatles, when he was limited to two or three songs per album. By now, he was sitting on a massive stash of material he was burning to share with the world. So he made sure nobody could ignore his definitive solo statement—the massive triple-vinyl classic All Things Must Pass.

A previously unreleased take of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity” has arrived ahead of the release of the 50th-anniversary edition of the musician’s solo classic, All Things Must Pass.
“Isn’t It a Pity (Take 27)” is closer in style and sound to the second version of the song that appears on the latter half of All Things Must Pass. Even still, the groove on “Take 27” feels a bit slower and deeper, the steady bass thumps driving the song as piano, delicate guitar, organ, and Harrison’s...

Prior to the 1970 album’s six-week recording sessions, Harrison spent two days — May 26th and 27th, 1970 — demoing 30 songs at Studio Three at Emi Studios Abbey Road in London. Peter Jackson’s eagerly awaited The Beatles: Get Back, a new documentary on the band during its final year, will be released in theaters by Disney on September 4.
Culled from 55 hours of footage shot in early 1969, as the Beatles were recording what would become Let It Be, the film includes never-before-seen footage and audio from those sessions, including behind-the-scenes clips from the band’s legendary 1969 rooftop concert in London. “Expect the unexpected, because it’s going to get weird,” house-band bassist Austin Scaggs warned the crowd at start of the eighth annual Wammy party on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Scaggs was right in more ways than one; about an hour later, in a sort of Hollywood fever dream, Weird Al Yankovic took the stage and broke from his usual staple of parodies to sing surprisingly tight versions of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” and the Beatles’ “Savoy Truffle.”

Willie Nelson, his sons Micah and Lukas, plus Jakob Dylan, Dhani Harrison and Amos Lee have teamed for an all-star cover of Tom Petty’s “For Real.”
Petty originally recorded “For Real” in August 2000, but the song wasn’t released until this past February when it appeared on the posthumous retrospective, The Best of Everything. The new cover, released as “For Real — For Tom,” finds the Nelsons, Harrison, Dylan and Lee cranking up the jangle of the original while also giving the tune a breezy country sway complete with harmonica and some soothing choral vocals.

Jeff Lynne will release the 14th Electric Light Orchestra album, From Out of Nowhere, on November 1st via Columbia Records. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee previewed the LP — the second billed under the moniker “Jeff Lynne’s Elo,” following 2015’s Alone in the Universe — with the dreamy title track.
“From Out of Nowhere” conjures vintage Elo, minus the symphonic edge of the band’s layered keyboards and strings. “Let me go, let me fly to a place that I love,” Lynne croons over a jangling, descending guitar progression and steady,...

Dhani Harrison has known Jeff Lynne his entire life. But this summer is his first time touring with the Electric Light Orchestra. “I’ve played with him live, but I’ve never played with him in his band,” Harrison says. “I played with Jeff and Tom [Petty] a lot — things like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the night they did dad’s induction. But their band is fantastic, this version of Elo.”
Harrison has been opening for the band since June, playing his solo music to packed arenas across the country.

Untethered from Dave Navarro’s walloping guitar riffs, Perry Farrell’s latest solo album feels like a swirling, Adhd fever dream — and that’s not entirely a bad thing. Farrell has always been a bit like alternative rock’s David Lee Roth, a consummate party animal unafraid of pursuing his wildest flights of fancy. Outside of music, he’s currently working on building an immersive Las Vegas “experience” called Kind Heaven that he’s described as walking into an Asian street scene and, whether he’s recording or not, he continues to keep Lollapalooza going.

George Harrison became the first former Beatle to have a solo No. 1 when he released “My Sweet Lord” in 1970. Though slightly marred by a copyright lawsuit — he was found guilty of “subconsciously plagiarizing” the Chiffon’s 1963 hit “He’s So Fine”— the rock hallelujah included on his majestic triple album All Things Must Pass went on to become Harrison’s signature song.

Music royalty has died. Prince, the massively influential and superlatively talented musician and personality, has died at 57. As complicated and strange as mourning a celebrity's death has become in 2016, it's especially fraught in the case of Prince, who for years fought a strangely noble war to keep his music offline. Recently, with the removal of his music from all online streaming services except Tidal, it's become nearly impossible to share his music, as a gesture of mourning or otherwise. So this is by no means a complete list of the Purple One's iconic performances, it's just the best ones that you can find.
