Brainstorm Media has nabbed the U.S. rights to the comedy I’ll Be Right There, which reteams Edie Falco with Nurse Jackie helmer Brendan Walsh.
The indie also stars Jeannie Berlin, Charlie Tahan, Kayli Carter, Michael Rapaport, Michael Beach, Sepideh Moafi and Bradley Whitford. Brainstorm Media plans a fall 2024 theatrical release.
I’ll Be Right There, based on a script by Jim Beggarly, has Falco playing Wanda, who has to juggle her pregnant daughter’s wedding plans, her mother’s health concerns, a wayward son and her own romantic dilemmas. As she navigates those challenges, Wanda discovers taking care of everyone leaves little time for herself, even if she has little idea what she’d do if not tending to the needs of others.

Next month, when the 2024 Tony Awards for excellence in Broadway theater are handed out, hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis will be honored with a Special Tony for her work on the acclaimed play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Jocelyn Bioh’s seriocomic celebration of West African immigrant hair braiders in Harlem who create masterpieces atop the heads of the neighborhood woman.
Anyone who saw Mathis’ marvelous wig creations will understand immediately why she is one of three recipients this year of Special Tony Awards, non-competitive honors bestowed by Tony organizers for productions, artists and organizations who do not fall into any of the competitive categories.
But what many in the theater community don’t understand is why Mathis or any of her design colleagues in wig, hair and makeup can’t simply compete in a category devoted to their artistry and work. And some of those designers, along with...

Tension at the University of California, Los Angeles, continued over the weekend and into Monday when professors protested outside an A-list gala at the school on Saturday night and another several dozen students were detained on Monday, while investigations into the mob that attacked the pro-Palestine encampment on campus last week continued.
Despite the mass arrests and dismantling of an encampment by police in riot gear that took place on Thursday, pro-Palestine protests carried on Monday at the university. A group of demonstrators was seen zip-tied and being moved by authorities from a UCLA parking garage to an Lacpd bus. The number of protester arrests was 43, according to local news reports Ktla, with those taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and released after they were processed; all classes have now been moved to remote.

Facing criticism from California’s political leaders, school faculty and students, UCLA’s chancellor is placing blame for the upheaval that overtook the university’s campus this week on “instigators” and “outside agitators” whose “terrifying” violent acts ultimately ended the weeks of pro-Palestine protests with the removal of an encampment by police and hundreds of arrests on campus.
The arrests of pro-Palestine protesters on Thursday at UCLA, which is estimated at over 200, came after officers in riot gear descended on the campus to dismantle the encampment erected on April 25 by the Uc Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA. Flares blasted over UCLA’s Dickson Plaza as demonstrators sprayed fire extinguishers at police in an attempt to fend off their removal by force. About 30 hours earlier, their encampment at the plaza was the scene of a violent attack from pro-Israel counter-protesters that left multiple people injured and...

No matter who prevails next Sunday at the NCAA’s championship game, 2024’s March Madness will go down in history as a milestone moment for women’s sports. Not just in the college basketball realm — but for female athletes overall.
In a perfect storm, the annual bracket-bonkers frenzy around the NCAA college basketball tournament has conferred a level of respect to the women’s game that is rarely been seen across sports media, but for the quadrennial exception of the Women’s World Cup. It’s happening this year for all the right reasons – basically, math and gravity. The games have been too good to ignore and the stats put up by such players as the University of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, Louisiana State University’s Angel Reese, USC’s freshman phenom JuJu Watkins and University of Connecticut’s Paige Bueckers are too eye-popping to not analyze.

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

Novelizations became popular at a time when home video was either unavailable or just too expensive to own. So these books were, in essence, cheap keepsakes after seeing and enjoying a film in theaters. In the case of 1981’s The Funhouse, however, the novelization came out first. This was on account of the film, directed by Tobe Hooper, taking longer to complete than originally anticipated. It seemed unwise to release the book first, considering the risk of spoilers. As it turned out, though, it was hard to spoil anything when the novel and film were as different as night and day.
Dean Koontz, who used multiple pseudonyms throughout the early years of his career, had yet to achieve any substantial success when he agreed to write the novelization for The Funhouse. On top of the financial incentive, the proposal of adapting Larry Block’s screenplay simply intrigued Koontz. After all,...

Ken Block couldn’t believe it. The mild-mannered Republican elections expert had seen a lot of things in his brief work as a consultant for former President Donald Trump’s campaign, after he was hired in late 2020 to find proof of mass election fraud that could stand up in court. This, however, was special.
A group of pro-Trump activists in Wisconsin were convinced they had found 740,070 cases of Wisconsin voters who voted twice — or around 22 percent of all votes cast in the state that year. The claim, which would have...

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Neutral Zone", the U.S.S. Enterprise-d encounters a seemingly abandoned cryo-pod floating out in the galaxy. On board are three humans, frozen since the 20th century. When they are thawed, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) takes a Roddenberrian opportunity to lecture them, explaining that their outmoded ideas about capitalism and selfishness are dead in the 24th century. Picard's dialogue is partly utopian but mostly condescending, meant more for TV viewers in 1988 than directed toward his scene partners.
The episode's B-plot involved a visit to the titular Neutral Zone between Federation space and the Romulan Star Empire. There, the Enterprise investigates the destruction of a remote outpost, perhaps the result of Romulan malfeasance. "The Neutral Zone" was the first time Trekkies had seen Romulans since the original series, re-establishing them as a major threat in the galaxy. It also set up the...

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.
Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

Jon Glickman is in talks to become the next CEO of Miramax Films. a post that has been vacant since Bill Block exited last fall.
Glickman left MGM and formed Panoramic, a monied venture that would be acquired as part of the deal if it makes, our sister publication THR reported and Deadline confirmed. We’ve heard there has been at least one more candidate, so it is not clear at this moment if the deal will close.
A well liked seasoned production executive, Glickman ran Spyglass for a decade before his run at MGM. He was very involved in the Daniel Craig James Bond films, and the Creed films.

Exclusive: In a lucrative pact, Amazon MGM Studios has landed U.S. theatrical rights to Levon’s Trade, with Prime Video taking streaming rights in a slew of major international territories, we can reveal.
As we told you last year, the film helmed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) will star Jason Statham (Fast & Furious franchise) and hail from producers Black Bear and BlockFilm. One of the stranger developments to emerge since the debut of ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) is the sudden rise of the digital afterlife industry, which promises consumers the opportunity to talk and interact with A.I.-rendered avatars of their deceased loved ones via text, audio, or VR. At the start of Eternal You, it seems as if the documentary may be all in on the utopian vision of the numerous tech bros currently marketing this technology. Directors Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck, though, soon peer beneath the sunny surface of good intentions claimed by the A.I. industry to reveal the moral, emotional, and psychological effects that have emerged and are still emerging from products like these.

When former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, he hired Ken Block’s data mining firm to try and find evidence to back up the wild allegations Trump and his campaign were making about voter fraud. Instead, Block found none, and now his work could be used to help prosecute Trump.
“I’ve received subpoenas from both Jack Smith’s federal investigation into potential crimes related to Jan. 6 and also Fani Willis’ investigation of potential election crimes committed in Georgia,” Block told Rolling Stone in an interview. “All of my...

Dave Robb, who spent more than four decades on the Hollywood labor beat for The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and, most recently, Deadline, has died. He was 74.
Robb died peacefully Friday night at his Los Angeles home after being diagnosed in late October with inoperable cancer of the brain stem, Deadline reported. (Deadline, like THR and Variety, are owned by Penske Media Group.)
He spent most of his last year covering the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
A dogged investigative journalist in his day, the gruff yet genial Robb started at THR as an editorial assistant in 1979, the first of his five stints with the paper. On Facebook, former editor Alex Ben Block wrote that he hired him twice and “rarely gave Dave an assignment. Usually he came to me with stories out of the blue that were amazing, brilliant and breaking news.

Actor Idris Elba and media mogul Tyler Perry once collaborated for the feature Daddy’s Little Girls. But Elba’s time on set didn’t seem to change the actor’s mind on some of Perry’s work.

Elba was already very familiar with Perry’s work. In 2007, he co-starred alongside Gabrielle Union in the Perry picture Daddy’s Little Girls. There, he played a blue-collar worker trying to make ends meet for his family. Union was already on board the project before Elba was cast. Both Perry and Union agreed emphatically that he was the right actor for the movie.
“We screen-tested a few men, and the only man on both our lists – I made a list and Tyler made a list – the only man on both our lists was Idris. It was a no-brainer,” Union once told MovieWeb.

Levon’s Trade is adapted from the novel of the same name by Chuck Dixon and follows Levon Cade (Statham) as he leaves his “profession” behind to go “straight” and work in construction. “He wants to live a simple life and be a good father to his daughter,” reads Deadline’s description. “But when his boss’s teenage daughter Jenny vanishes, he’s called upon to re-employ the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. There’s a new horror film called The Home coming our way from The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco – and Deadline reports that Lionsgate has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film with the plan to give it a theatrical release sometime in early 2024.
Scripted by DeMonaco and Adam Canto, The Home sees Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) taking on the role of Max, a troubled man who starts working at a retirement home and realizes its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child.
Marilee Talkington (See), Matthew Miniero (Boarding School), David Moreland (Donnie Darko), Jimmy Gary Jr. (Orange Is the New Black), Daphne Rey (Abbott Elementary), and Jagger Nelson (The Last Nazi) are also in the cast.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has closed a U.S. deal for The Home, the James DeMonaco-directed thriller that stars Pete Davidson. The film was made be Miramax, and it screened for buyers outside competition at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival in the Industry Selects category that the festival started to highlight commercial films.
If you’ve been scoring from home, this goes down as another deal from TIFF 2023. After a slow start, the festival has led to a wellspring of film deals, one of the fest’s strongest showings in years.
The deal closed after the exit last week of Miramax CEO Bill Block, who made the film and placed it at TIFF. On the Lionsgate side was Charlotte Koh, EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, along with the film’s producers, Block and Sebastian K. Lemercier. Look for this one to get a theatrical release in the early part of 2024.

Bill Block is out as CEO at Miramax as part of a “strategic shift” for the studio, TheWrap has learned.
Block had been with the company since 2017 and had shepherded it through a successful few years, which saw the brand once again rise to prominence.
According to an insider with knowledge of the situation, the market has fundamentally changed and there were those who believe that Miramax should focus on developing projects from existing IP. A strategic shift was desired and a change in leadership was required, according to the insider.
Block was installed in 2017, following a bidding war for the Miramax assets conducted after sexual assault allegations against Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein (now convicted of the crimes) surfaced. In 2019, Paramount Global announced a 49% stake in the company, valued at around $375 million.

After a six-year run leading Miramax, CEO Bill Block is exiting the studio, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Block’s contract at Miramax, co-owned by beIN Media Group and Paramount Global, expired this week and was not renewed. The executive started as CEO in April 2017.
The studio is looking to develop projects based on its own intellectual property rather than aiming to acquire projects, a source close to Miramax’s owners said. A search is underway for a new top executive.
Miramax, founded by Harvey and Bob Weinstein and then later purchased and sold by Disney, has largely been known in recent years for its expansive library of more than 700 films. However, since Block joined and its acquisition by BeIN and Paramount, the studio has tried to make a bigger push into producing and distribution with the relaunch of the Halloween franchise, as well as films such as The Gentleman,...

Exclusive: In a major shakeup at Miramax, CEO Bill Block will exit the company this week, a move that will come as soon as Tuesday when his contract expires. It does not look like there was much if any negotiation on a new deal for Block, which raises questions of exactly which areas the multi-faceted company will lean into.
Block’s exit comes at a time when he has been a catalyst for a large amount of film business. Block had been appointed CEO in 2017.

HGTV Bargain Block house-flipping stars Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas admit they had no idea what they were in for when they moved from Denver, Colorado to Detroit, Michigan.
The construction and design couple found house flipping in Denver “cost prohibitive” so they sought an emerging market with promise: Detroit.
“The market was really tricky to navigate and you had to have just so much cash. So we were looking for a market that would have made our job a little easier,” Bynum explained to Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“So a little over six years ago I flew out on my birthday actually to Detroit, never been here,” he admitted. “Saw eight houses. Put offers on two, we got one of them and we sold our place in Colorado and moved out here. We thought the house was livable, but it wasn’t. It looked nice from the outside. R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

A pair of former production assistants-turned-assistant directors have created a nonprofit in hopes of providing financial aid to PAs who’ve been put out of work due to the strike.
Katie Hacker and Andrea Block argue that most PAs don’t qualify for most of the strike relief that’s available out there — not to mention how they are already the lowest paid crew members on TV and film projects. Once work resumes, the women argue, Pa paychecks will be much smaller than those of the rest of the crew — making it harder for them to recover from the strike.
That’s why Hacker and Block formed the Go for PAs Alliance in July.
“Our entire industry is in this together, and we feel strongly that the little guys should not be ignored in this conversation,” the women, both of whom went through the DGA training program, said in a statement.

In case you missed it, director Dutch Marich‘s 2021 found footage chiller Horror in the High Desert is a little-known gem that has recently been generating some well-deserved word of mouth among fans of the subgenre. Though found footage remains a subgenre maligned by many, now and then, a filmmaker manages to bring out the best in the format–exploring effective scares, unsettling imagery, and intriguing stories in new and inventive ways. Horror in the High Desert is a prime example of this ingenuity. While the story initially unfolds how a run-of-the-mill spooky docuseries might, the final 10 minutes of the film deliver an equally curious and bone-chilling turn that solidifies Marich’s world firmly in the realm of high strangeness.
If Marich’s microbudget film resonated with you as much as it did me, you have likely already rushed to check out Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva, which...

Exclusive: Miramax has greenlit an untitled penned feature thriller from Scream architect Kevin Williamson set during the pandemic which Blockers actress Gideon Adlon will star in.
The feature takes place when the country locks down due to the pandemic and college student Parker (Adlon) and her best friend decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone – or so they think. John Hyams will direct the screenplay by Williamson and Katelyn Crabb. Williamson wrote the original story. Williamson, Miramax CEO Bill Block and Ben Fast will all serve as producers on the project.
“Williamson and Crabb have written a story that intertwines the palpable fear we’ve all experienced over the past year and merged that with their ability to skillfully amplify our unconscious anxieties by utilizing the horror genre. With Hyams attached to direct, we know that this film is destined to become a fan favorite,” said Block.
