Our story kicks off when Ray (David Wilmot) returns to his home town, after years dealing with depression. Wanting to reconnect with his wife Alice (Kerry Condon), who has moved on from Ray with his former Pe teacher Frank (James Nesbitt), and teenage daughter Abbie (Maisie Williams), he inserts himself into their new life, setting in motion a chain of events that will have huge consequences for them all. Terry McMahon’s Patrick’s Day and Gerard Barrett’s Glassland have jointly picked up the Best Irish Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh, which closed last night (July 13).
The annual awards ceremony took place before the screening of the festival’s closing film An Bronntanas.
Patrick’s Day world premiered at SXSW earlier this year. It tells the story of a schizophrenic young man (Moe Dunford) who tries to build a relationship with a flight attendant. Barrett’s follow up to Pilgrim Hill stars Toni Collette, Jack Reynor and Will Poulter and centres around alcoholism.
The festival’s Galway Hooker Awards were given to Irish actor Brenda Fricker, whose latest film A Long Way From Home was screened during t festival, and to animation powerhouse Brown Bag Films in recognition of their success as Irish animators on the international stage, including such successes as Doc McStuffins and two Oscar-nominated shorts.

The Galway Film Fleadh announced today the five nominees for the Bingham Ray New Talent Award. The Irish Film and Television Awards has unveiled nominees in 32 categories for its 2006 awards ceremonies taking place Feb. 9 in Dublin.
Neil Jordan's "Breakfast on Pluto" leads the pack with a total of 10 nominations followed closely by Brian Kirk's "Middletown" with nine. Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" and John Boorman's "The Tiger's Tail" garnered seven nominations each.
"Breakfast on Pluto", "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" and "Middletown" are best film contenders alongside Niall Heery's unreleased feature "Small Engine Repair" and David Gleeson's "The Front Line".
The five features in the running for best international film are "Babel", "The Departed," Little Miss Sunshine," "United 93" and "Casino Royale".
Cillian Murphy received dual nominations in the lead actor (film) category for his performances in "Breakfast on Pluto" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." Other nominees are Colin Farrell ("Miami Vice"), Pierce Brosnan ("The Matador") and Brendan Gleeson ("Studs").
Nominated actresses for lead roles in film are Eva Birthistle ("Middletown"), Gemma Doorly ("A Song for Rebecca"), Pauline McLynn ("Gypo") and Ruth Negga ("Isolation").
Liam Cunningham was nominated for three acting awards across the film/TV divide -- "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," "Showbands" and "Murphy's Law".
The nominees were announced Tuesday in Dublin.

Neil Jordan's "Breakfast on Pluto" leads the pack with a total of 10 nominations followed closely by Brian Kirk's "Middletown" with nine. Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" and John Boorman's "The Tiger's Tail" garnered seven nominations each.
"Breakfast on Pluto", "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" and "Middletown" are best film contenders alongside Niall Heery's unreleased feature "Small Engine Repair" and David Gleeson's "The Front Line".
The five features in the running for best international film are "Babel", "The Departed," Little Miss Sunshine," "United 93" and "Casino Royale".
Cillian Murphy received dual nominations in the lead actor (film) category for his performances in "Breakfast on Pluto" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." Other nominees are Colin Farrell ("Miami Vice"), Pierce Brosnan ("The Matador") and Brendan Gleeson ("Studs").
Nominated actresses for lead roles in film are Eva Birthistle ("Middletown"), Gemma Doorly ("A Song for Rebecca"), Pauline McLynn ("Gypo") and Ruth Negga ("Isolation").
Liam Cunningham was nominated for three acting awards across the film/TV divide -- "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," "Showbands" and "Murphy's Law".
The nominees were announced Tuesday in Dublin.

LONDON -- Organizers of the 17th Dinard Festival of British Film, which unspools in the northern French resort of Brittany Oct. 5-8, said Monday this year's jury will include actor and director Charles Dance, actor Stephen Mangan and Irish actor Bronagh Gallagher. The 2006 jury will be presided over by French actor Francois Berleand alongside fellow French representation including actor Chantal Lauby, producer and agent Dominique Besnehard, director Radu Mihaileanu with Korean actress Yun Chung-Hi and actress Evelyne Bouix also judging. Six films will screen in competition for the Hitchcock d'Or Award which sees the winning title secure a financial contribution of 3,000 ($3,800) towards distribution costs, and a 1,600 ($2,000) grant to the director. The winner will come from Almost Adult, directed by Yousaf Ali Khan, Cashback, directed by Sean Ellis, Menhaj Huda's Kidulthood, London to Brighton, directed by Paul Andrew Williams, Adrian Shergold's Pierrepoint, and Small Engine Repair, directed by Niall Heery. The festival kicks off Oct. 5 with an out-of-competition screening of The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears and starring Helen Mirren, and closes with an out-of-competition outing for Andrea Arnold's Red Road.

PARIS -- Stephen Frears' The Queen, which picked up two prizes at the Venice Film Festival, will open the 17th annual Festival of British Film in Dinard on France's Brittany coast Oct. 5, organizers said Tuesday. Red Road, the first feature from Andrea Arnold, who won an Academy Award for her live-action short film Wasp in 2005, will be given a gala screening. Six films will compete for the festival's annual Golden Hitchcock award: Almost Adult by Yousaf Ali Khan, Cashback by Sean Ellis, Kidulthood by Menhai Huda, London to Brighton by Paul Andrew Williams, Pierrepoint by Adrian Shergold and Small Engine Repair by Niall Heery.
