As the Met Gala sets its return to the first Monday in May, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced plans for the 2022 spring exhibition themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”
The Met curators, led by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu curator in charge of the Costume Institute, have enlisted eight film directors —- Janicza Bravo, Sofia Coppola, Julie Dash, Tom Ford, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, Autumn de Wilde and Chloé Zhao — to help bring the exhibition to life.
“Anthology” is the second of a two-part presentation saluting designers and dressmakers who worked in the United States from the 19th to the mid-late 20th century. It follows Part One, titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opened in September 2021.
“Part Two, which explores the foundations of American fashion in relation to the complex histories of the American Wing period rooms, serves as a preface...

“Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke and Oscar-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”) are set to headline “The Pod Generation,” a sci-fi romantic comedy that will be directed by Sophie Barthes. MK2 Films has boarded international sales, and CAA Media Finance is handling domestic rights.
Set in a near future where AI is all the rage and nature is becoming a distant memory, the story revolves around Rachel (Clarke) and Alvy (Ejiofor), a New York couple who are ready to take their relationship to the next level and start a family. Rachel’s work gives them a chance to use a new tool developed by a tech giant, Pegasus, which offers couples the opportunity to share pregnancy on a more equal footing via detachable artificial wombs, or pods. Alvy, a botanist and devoted purist, has doubts, but his love for Rachel prompts him to take a leap of faith.

“Mank” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on April 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” — plus “Mulan” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Tenet,” which won the fantasy prize at the Adg Awards on Saturday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “The Father,” was not in contention here.
The other Adg winners were the contemporary film “Da 5 Bloods” and the animated film “Soul.”
The Adg Awards were bestowed during a virtual ceremony on April 10. Ryan Murphy was feted with the Cinematic Imagery Award.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

The Art Directors Guild announced the nominations for the 25th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Thursday, honoring the finest production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos, and animation features.
Among the nominees for film are Oscar hopefuls “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” with TV accolades including “The Mandalorian,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Netflix was the big winner grabbing seven Adg nominations, including three period dramas; one fantasy film (George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky”); and three contemporary films.
Also making the cut were Christopher Nolan’s time-inversion spy thriller, “Tenet” (production designed by five-time Oscar nominee Nathan Crowley), and two surprises: Emerald Fennell’s Oscar buzzy revenge black comedy, “Promising Young Woman,” which scored a contemporary Adg nomination, and Matteo Garron’s period “Pinocchio” Gothic re-imagining, which scored for period.

On February 25 the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 25th annual awards, which will be handed out on April 10. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 24 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Mank” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World” and “Mulan” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Tenet,” which vies in the fantasy film race at the Art Director Guild Awards.

On paper, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” sounds like a straightforward courtroom drama, but it’s actually a stealthily complicated movie to assemble. While the central plot revolves around the men on trial on charges of inciting a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Aaron Sorkin film is non-linear and is full of quick cutaways in and out of the courtroom, requiring lots of planning beforehand.
“You’re not portraying this event in a way you would normally do it if it were not as intercut,” cinematographer Phedon Papamichael tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Btl Experts: Film Cinematography panel (watch above). “It really has to be designed and the shots have to be structured to be able to function in the rhythm of the edit, which is leaving the courtroom often for a vignette that’s really five seconds and then you’re back in the courtroom.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” about protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the ensuing trial, features great work by writer-director Aaron Sorkin, who is quick to salute his below-the-line colleagues: “They’re not there to take my instructions; they’re there to top my instructions. I consider these people to be co-authors of the film.”

“In the opening seven minutes, we wanted to do two things. One is to set the context of a nation coming off the rails, with temperatures rising on both sides. I also wanted to introduce our main characters and show that they are four distinct groups. Alan has a habit of making things look easy.
When Alan and I were done with our first cut, there were three or four places where my heart sank; the dramatic impact wasn’t landing somehow. With a few quarter turns of the screw,...

Before production designers can create the worlds for characters and audiences to get lost in, they first have to do research, which all four of our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panelists — Gae Buckley (“I’m Your Woman”), Jim Bissell (“The Midnight Sky”), Jeremy Woodward (“Sound of Metal”) and Shane Valentino (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) — agree is their favorite part of the process.
“You immerse yourself in so many interesting details and see what comes out of the blue,” Bissell says, before sharing one memorable experience on “E.T.” (1982), when the titular alien was getting sick in the classic film. “We were researching how to isolate the creature and what the procedures and protocol would be, and it was about different levels of cleanliness. We made the final assumption that we were trying to protect E.T. from the environment; we were not trying to protect the environment from E.

Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is a historical drama, but one element of the film wasn’t entirely true to life. The courtroom — the centerpiece of the film where the seven titular defendants and one more man faced charges of inciting a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention — was not modeled after the real one at the writer/director’s request.
“The original courtroom was designed by Mies van der Rohe in the International Style in the Federal Building in Chicago and the look wasn’t quite what he was looking for,” Shane Valentino tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panel (watch above). “I think he was just coming off of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ [on Broadway] and those sort of traditional courtrooms with a lot of the wood tones, and was sort of leaning toward that aesthetic.”

Shane Valentino was extremely excited to tackle the art direction for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and specifically couldn’t wait to start working on two specific areas. “Absolutely the court room in and of itself. There are several different riot scenes or protest scenes between the Vietnam protesters and the Chicago police, as well,” reveals Valentino in our recent webchat (watch the video above). For the protesting scenes, he was able to draw from his experience of doing the production design for “Straight Outta Compton,” which included scenes recreating the 1992 L.A. riots. “I was capable of really helping [Aaron Sorkin] visualize the ways in which we can achieve something with conflict and aggression but does not necessarily need to show that much of the world.”

While “The Trial of Chicago 7” is earning critical acclaim for writer/director Aaron Sorkin and his all-star cast led by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, it is also being singled out for its attention to detail in capturing the look of the late 1960s. And that praise could well translate into recognition from three key branches of the academy: costume designers, hairstylists and makeup artists, and production designers.
The production designer for the film is Shane Valentino, the set decorator is Andrew Baseman, the costumer is Susan Lyall and the hair and makeup teams were headed by Nathan J. Busch II and Louise McCarthy. While none of them have been nominated at the Oscars or their respective guilds, Valentino did receive a BAFTA nomination for Best Production Design in 2016 for “Nocturnal Animals” (lost to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) and Busch was Emmy-nominated for Best Hairstyling for a Single-Camera...

For cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, going from “Ford v Ferrari” to “The Trial of the Chicago 7” was more than merely shifting gears and genres within the period lane of the late 1960s. Shooting the timely conspiracy trial, showing Vietnam War protesters outside the 1968 Democratic Convention that turned horribly violent, required a new mindset and rapport with writer-director Aaron Sorkin, making his second outing behind the camera following “Molly’s Game.”
In fact, on “Chicago 7,” Sorkin’s technical inexperience demanded more visual heavy lifting from the cinematographer. Finally, Papamichael was able to facilitate Sorkin’s vision, just as he’s done all along with his frequent collaborators James Mangold and Alexander Payne (the Oscar-nominated “Nebraska”).
Papamichael realized on day one that “Aaron is all about the rhythm and the language,” he said. “And therefore he doesn’t want any shots that are not just on the person who’s speaking. And, you...

Written and directed by Andrea Berloff and based on a DC Vertigo comicbook miniseries published in 2015, "The Kitchen" is a tale of crime and punishment.
It is a light-but-not-really-comic drama of three women who become masters of their hellbent fate and the underworld, after their husbands are disposed of to jail after being nabbed for attempted robbery.
The title has a dual meaning. It refers to the Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood where the story is set, and also the room where brutal chauvinistic men think women belong to.
Set in 1978 in New York City, the narrative centres around three sort-of-friends, living in varying states of marital accommodation to low-rung mobsters.
Kathy (Melissa McCarthy) considers her bond with Jimmy (Brian d'Arcy James), her husband and father of her two kids, as a solid one and looks anguished when the judge sentences him for three years.
Claire (Elisabeth Moss) on the other hand,...

New York City, 1978. The 20 blocks of pawnshops, porn palaces and dive bars between 8th Avenue and the Hudson River owned by the Irish mafia and known as Hell’s Kitchen was never the easiest place to live. Or the safest. But for mob wives Kathy, Ruby and Claire–played by Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss–things are about to take a radical, dramatic turn. When their husbands are sent to prison by the FBI the women take business into their own hands, running the rackets and taking out the competition…literally. Now they own the neighborhood. The gritty, female-driven mob drama “The Kitchen,” from New Line Cinema and Bron Creative, is written and directed by Andrea Berloff, who was nominated for an Oscar for Original Screenplay for “Straight Outta Compton.”
The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), James Badge Dale (“Only the Brave”), Brian d...

This is Part Two in a series of articles on the Robert Beck Memorial Cinema (Rbmc). As detailed in Part One, the Rbmc was an experimental film screening series in New York City, started by filmmaker Brian L. Frye.
Frye programmed the first screening on May 12, 1998 at the Collective Unconscious theater space. The screening included the feature-length documentary Underground by Emile de Antonio about the left-wing militant group the Weather Underground, and a kinoscope of Richard M. Nixon’s infamous “Checker’s Speech.” At the screening, fellow media artist Bradley Eros introduced himself to Frye and the pair co-programmed the Rbmc together for several years.
The goal of the screenings was to present work that typically wouldn’t be projected anywhere else, such as small gauge film formats and expanded cinema performances. The Rbmc would also host filmmakers in town for larger shows elsewhere in the city and asked them to screen their older,...
