It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 24 is George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which tells the origin story of the wasteland warrior princess before her run-in with Mad Max starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Alyla Browne. Also hitting theaters is family film “The Garfield Movie” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” which follows a straight-edge professor who discovers his calling as a fake assassin starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio and Molly Bernard. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “The Beach Boys,” a documentary about the legendary surf-rock band, and “Solo,” a foreign...

In the new Netflix film Hit Man, Glen Powell plays Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered college professor who has a mind for electronics. He occasionally helps out the local police department by recording sting operations on people trying to hire a hitman. When he’s forced into pretending to be one, he finds that he’s got quite a knack for it.
When he meets a young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona) who tries to hire his hit man alter ego, it sets up a series of events that will put lives in danger. Directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Powell, Hit Man is based on the Texas Monthly article by Skip Hollandsworth about a real-life person who had a similar double life.

Glen Powell Reveals Why He “Ran Away” from Hollywood and Why He Turned Down the New ‘Jurassic’ Movie
He is 35 years old and he comes from Austin, TX. He is an actor and you’ve probably seen him in Top Gun: Maverick, but don’t remember him as he was not Tom Cruise. Since then, his career has been on an upward spiral, and he has had some very successful projects. His name is Glen Powell and the actor has finally managed to “conquer Hollywood” at the age of 35, which is also when he decided to retreat a bit and go back to his roots. Okay, he’s not quitting, and he has many plans for the future, but the Texan has decided to take a different approach to fame.
In a major interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Powell discussed his career, his internal struggles, as well as his future plans, revealing that while we won’t be seeing him, we will still be seeing him everywhere at the same time.

Top Gun: Maverick‘s Glen Powell has been in the spotlight a lot lately for his projects and the projects that he’s been announced to be in. He’s got both Hit Man and Twisters this year alone. He’s also been reported to star in a remake of The Running Man from Edgar Wright, a thriller called Huntington, a legal drama titled Monsanto, and he’s recently been announced to be starring in an updated reimagining of the Warren Beatty film Heaven Can Wait. While he’s currently riding the wave of his Top Gun breakout with movies like Anyone But You, and despite having so much on his docket, Powell feels he’s earned the reputation of being picky after turning down some tentpole franchises.

Glen Powell has been attached to star in Paramount’s reimagining of Heaven Can Wait. More on the project below.
Glen Powell truly is the man of the moment. He’s only just coming off the unexpected success of Sony’s Anyone But You and about to headline the summer’s windiest blockbuster Twisters, but he’s now eyeing up a body-switch comedy.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Powell will star in Paramount’s reimagining of Heaven Can Wait, based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name. The play was most famously adapted in 1978 and starred Warren Beatty as an NFL football player who suffers an unfortunate, untimely death but returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire.
Warren Beatty also directed the film, which received nine Oscar nominations, winning Best Art Direction as it was called at the time. Segall’s play has also...

Glen Powell arrives at lunch through a back door toting a container of bone broth he isn’t eager to look at, much less consume. He’s more a “chicken-fried-steak-in-Austin kind of a guy,” he insists, but he’s signed on to star in an A24 revenge thriller and he’s supposed to drop 15 pounds in a matter of weeks. It means he won’t be ordering the midday margarita that Ron Perlman is nursing at the next table. Reluctantly, Powell requests a green juice.
“I’ve almost given up on this diet, like, three times,” he says, flashing a familiar smile. “I’m like, ‘Can’t we just change the character?’ “
Glen Powell was photographed March 26 at the Harvard House Motel in Los Angeles.

It’s taken a while for Glen Powell to truly step into the spotlight. After popping up in the likes of Hidden Figures, Set It Up and Everybody Wants Some!! (the last his first collaboration with Richard Linklater), it was 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick that saw him really take flight, giving an unforgettably hissable-yet-heroic performance as Lt Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Major turns have come since — box-office-busting romcom Anyone But You and another aviation adventure, Devotion — but it is with Hit Man that Powell announces himself as a movie star and a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.
Inspired by the true story of teacher-turned-pretend-assassin Gary Johnson (as reported by journalist Skip Hollandsworth in a 2001 article for Texas Monthly), Hit Man sees Powell re-team with Linklater, this time on a deeper creative level as co-writer. Hot on a role right now, Glen Powell is set for a reimaging of ‘Heaven Can Wait’ which is in early development at Paramount Pictures.
Based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name, the story made its way to the big screen back in 1978 and starred Warren Beatty. It focused on Beatty’s NFL quarterback who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. Beatty also co-directed the film with Buck Henry and co-wrote the script with Elaine May.
Also in news – Steve Carrell set for HBO untitled comedy series
Oscar winner Stephan Gaghan is set to pen the latest iteration of the story. Powell and Gaghan’s upcoming project is reportedly not a remake and will not centre around a football player as the main character. However, it will retain the concept of a man being taken away before his time.

The upcoming release of Twisters has everyone on the edge of their seats, especially after hearing the harrowing experiences some cast members endured. Glen Powell, known for his daring roles, revealed just how extreme the filming conditions got, particularly when it involved having a giant jet engine blown in his face. Filming with Intensity Director Lee Isaac Chung demanded a high level of realism for Twisters. The film famously utilized highly realistic special effects to capture the chaotic nature of tornadoes. Chung’s dedication was clear from the start, reminiscent of the thorough approach he took with Minari, making his transition

Glen Powell may be one of Hollywood’s most promising actors after starring in last year’s trending romcom Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney, but his career was launched way before his most famous flick came around.
Unlike many other actors, Powell jumped right to the 2000s’ huge franchise for his first ever role, but later on was unfairly forgotten.
Back in 2003, 14-year-old Powell starred in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, the third movie of Robert Rodriguez’s iconic franchise about two kids following their parents’ suit and becoming young spies. The actor got a minor role of a character nicknamed Long-fingered Boy, yet he still succeeded in impressing the franchise’s director with his talent and perseverance.

Just when you thought Glen Powell couldn't be more booked and busy, along comes word that he's adding another potential project to his To Do list. He's now attached to star in a new version of Heaven Can Wait for Paramount.
As originally reported by Puck's What I'm Hearing… newsletter and since confirmed by the likes of The Hollywood Reporter, Powell will play a man who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire.
Stephen Gaghan, who wrote Traffic and wrote/directed Syriana, is on board to script this one.
Originally a 1938 play by Harry Segall, Heaven Can Wait was first turned into a 1941 film by Alexander Hall called Here Comes Mr. Jordan. That outing featured a boxer given a second chance. “Twisters,” set to be released July 19 and one of IndieWire’s most anticipated movies of summer 2024, arrives a whopping 28 years after the original “Twister” landed in theaters. That was the perfect amount of time for a whole fandom to spring up around the 1996 movie, with devotees obsessed with its scrappy stormchasers in it for the science, all vying with evil meteorologists only in it for the money (because meteorology is such a lucrative field!), its windblown CGI cattle, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s make-the-most-of-it line readings, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his best early roles.
Glen Powell, the star of “Twisters,” alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, shares that fandom. Glen Powell is swiftly heading to the top of the list of Hollywood’s hottest hotshots with his projects like Anyone but You, and his upcoming presumed smash hits like Hit Man and Twisters are already paving the way for more fame for him. That said, besides these two, he has a further recently released project: The Blue Angels.

DC Studios is developing Booster Gold as a TV series for Max. While rumours of production beginning imminently appear to be incorrect, it seems casting may be heating up as the Dcu readies itself for a superhero unlike any other.
In the comics, Mike Carter was a college football star in the 25th Century who ruined his career by wagering money on his own games. Forced to take a job as a security guard in the Metropolis Space Museum, he stole future tech to travel back in time and become a "superhero" (all while hoping to monetise being a good guy).
He'd later become a genuine time-travelling superhero and is a character who might be a game-changer for the Dcu. While casting such a complex character won't be easy, we have some suggestions which could do Booster justice both on streaming and in theaters.

Working out for movies can be rigorous as actors need to make their bodies look good, but one star from Top Gun: Maverick refused to take part. Lewis Pullman, who played Lt. Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd in the Tom Cruise film, opted not to engage in heavy exercise.

He has a logical reason, though. The actor has no qualms about getting fit or taking off his shirt, but his character does not need any of it. In fact, Pullman believed Floyd wouldn’t necessarily do it.

It’s hard to imagine the iconic movie Top Gun— helmed by Tony Scott—without the sizzling romance between Maverick and Charlie, played by Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, respectively. The chemistry between the two characters added depth and emotional resonance to the high-flying action sequences, which the film is famous for.
Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise to learn that the romance between Maverick and Charlie was not originally a focal point of the first movie. In the original versions of Top Gun, the love story between Maverick and Charlie was much more subdued and not as prominently featured as it is in the final cut that audiences saw.

Glen Powell is acing at his fame game of winning hearts over quite spectacularly, considering how he has not only won fans over from all around the globe but even has his co-stars enchanted by his charmingly alluring personality. He can create chemistry with just anyone thanks to his remarkable acting chops, and Adria Arjona’s statement about him stands as proof of the same.

This happened recently at a very special event that honored Powell with a Hall of Famer position, where his Hit Man co-star Arjona was present as well. Not only did the 32-year-old Puerto Rican actress have a ton of praises to heave her co-star and on-screen love interest with, but she even went so far as to claim that this wasn’t his summer, but rather, it was his decade.

Richard Linklater just had his hometown premiere for “Hit Man” in Austin May 15, at which his star and co-writer Glen Powell was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. But he’s already wrapped his next movie, “Nouvelle Vague.”
Shot in Paris, “Nouvelle Vague” tells the story of Jean-Luc Godard making his jump from Cahiers du Cinema film critic (Cahiers is also fittingly where the first look images from “Nouvelle Vague” made their debut) to filmmaker with the making of his first movie, “Breathless.” Guillaume Marbeck is Godard, and Zoe Deutsch plays his star Jean Seberg.
On the red carpet of the “Hit Man” premiere, Linklater talked to IndieWire about what he hopes viewers take away from “Nouvelle Vague” and, especially, what we can learn from the French New Wave filmmakers at this moment when there’s such doom and gloom about the future of cinema.

MGM/Imax’s The Blue Angels lands a hefty $1.3 million on just 255 domestic Imax screens from limited showtimes in the large format exhibitor’s exclusive theatrical engagement. The Paul Crowder film, with Glen Powell and Bad Robot as producers, follows the Navy’s famed demonstration flying squadron. It also “ushers in a new era for IMAX Documentaries, or Docu-busters,” the company said. It’s no. 9 at the domestic box office
It’s got a weeklong run before hitting Prime Video. The feature-length version for Imax multiplex locations will be followed later by a 45-minute, traditional Imax documentary version for Imax institutional locations.

If there’s anything superhero movies try to stay away from over the past years, it’s the exhibition of s*x scenes. The majority of comic book films don’t show this type of mature theme as it would affect the rating and viewership.

This is the dilemma of renowned director Richard Linklater when it comes to creating movies. The lack of intimate scenes in superhero films has swiftly become the trend in Hollywood.

Antony Starr is perhaps the face of morally complex characters in today’s day and age. From The Boys to Banshee, complexity is something he carries in front of the camera like no one else. The darkness within a character takes a great amount of skill to exude and that is something the actor excels at. The patience and dedication it takes is what fans appreciate wholeheartedly.

While Starr isn’t typecasted in the role of a character battling his inner self through the darkness within him, there is no doubt that he plays the part perfectly. He may not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Universe yet but he has shown through Homelander that a role in the franchises wouldn’t be an opportunity anyone would regret. As such, the possibility may be nigh.

Tom Cruise has portrayed unforgettable characters in numerous films, but Top Gun stands out as one of his most iconic performances. Despite his breathtaking stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise and outstanding roles in other movies, Cruise’s portrayal of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun will be remembered for generations to come.

What makes the movie even more special is the mesmerizing aerial scenes and the way the movie captures the thrill and danger of naval aviation. While the chemistry between Cruise’s character and his fellow pilots adds an extra layer of excitement to the film, it is heartbreaking to think that Cruise might have never starred as Marevrick if it wasn’t for a US Navy flight squad.

Director Richard Linklater rues that Hollywood has taken to creating sexless characters and superheroes without genitalia.
The writer/director of films including the Before trilogy and Boyhood is behind Netflix’s Hit Man, one of the standout successes at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Linklater calls the movie, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, a “sexy crime thriller meets screwball comedy” and says the plot hinges on Arjanoa’s character Maddy being “the one he will risk everything for, just to sleep with her.”
Linklater told The Times of London: “Sex and violence is what cinema is great at. Sex was always the great seller; I don’t know why they backed off from that. Hollywood started feeding this new generation characters that were sexless. Superheroes don’t have sex. They don’t have genitalia, frankly.”

Antony Starr does an incredible job as The Boys’ villain and main antagonist, Homelander. While playing a narcissistic, murderous, moral-less character can be tiring and challenging, the actor has done an incredible job throughout the Prime Video series. Slated to get even more unhinged in the upcoming Season 4 of the series, the actor’s performance is one of the main draws for fans of the series.

When Glen Powell was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in Austin May 15, there was one obvious person to give him the honor: The director who discovered Powell, when the actor was just 14 years old, Robert Rodriguez.
Powell grew up in Austin right at the moment that it was starting to become a solid film production hub, thanks in large part to Rodriguez, the auteur behind “El Mariachi” and “From Dusk Till Dawn” and who’d founded Austin’s Troublemaker Studios. When Rodriguez was casting for “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over,” he was looking for a number of “local hires” to round out the cast.
“I remember distinctly how surprised I was [by Powell] because we’d cast a bunch of people from L.A.,” Rodriguez told IndieWire at the red carpet for the induction — which was also the Austin premiere of Netflix’s “Hit Man,” starring Powell and directed by Richard Linklater.

Glen Powell is one of those rapidly rising actors in the entertainment industry, with each new project launching him to heights more extraordinary than ever before. In fact, he has even starred alongside multiple other A-listers, including Tom Cruise, on 2022’s critically acclaimed action-adventure masterpiece, Top Gun: Maverick, where Powell played Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin.

Since then, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the pair’s next collaboration, which was further given a structure by reports of a third film in Cruise’s saga being in development. Moreover, Cruise himself added fuel to all of these reports through his recent comment praising his former co-star, which unarguably hinted that Powell and he may be returning for this very third film.

Ryan Reynolds’ introduction to the superhero realm wasn’t exactly amusing. Not long after playing Deadpool in one of the lowest-rated X-Men entries, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in 2011, the actor starred as Hal Jordan in the live-action Green Lantern movie. Despite having a huge budget, the movie was criticized for its choppy CGI, especially the suit, which was done entirely in CGI, and the apparent plans of branding it as the first Dceu entry were scrapped.
While Reynolds was able to recoup from his Deadpool debacle, the Lanterns are yet to make their way back to the big screen, and fans have now taken matters into their own hands.

I don’t live in tornado country, so I’ve never experienced one, but they seem pretty frightening. However, Twisters star Glen Powell does have a history with tornados, and he told Total Film that he was able to bring that experience to his role.
“It’s actually something I got to incorporate a little bit into the movie,” Powell said. “I had an experience with this tornado in Jarrell, Texas. It was an F5 – one of the big ones. It decimated Jarrell. I was outrunning it with my aunt Taffy, and a car full of cousins. And I remember us having to take shelter. It didn’t get close enough to do any damage to us, but I remember the fear of being on the road when, you know, the biggest imaginable one was kind of coming through.“

Glen Powell’s journey to superstardom began in a creative writing class at Austin’s Westwood High School. He was the only one of the kids who was trying his hand at writing screenplays.
“My teacher, Dr. [F.J.] Schaak was like, ‘Hey, you love writing screenplays. There is no better guy than Richard Linklater. Study all of his movies,'” the actor told IndieWire.
Through Schaak, Powell, who’d already been pursuing acting — his name is still written on the dressing room wall of Austin’s Paramount Theatre, where he performed in “The Sound of Music” as a teenager — met Linklater as well. And Linklater’s longtime editor Sandra Adair spoke to his class.

Glen Powell might just be a perfect man — at least, that’s how his former castmates and collaborators describe the Top Gun: Maverick actor.
Powell received lavish praise while attending his Texas Hall of Fame induction hosted by the Austin Film Society on Thursday night, an event timed to the upcoming release of the actor’s Netflix movie Hit Man, which reunites Powell and his Everybody Wants Some!! writer-director Richard Linklater.
The event at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios included speeches from Rodriguez (who first cast Powell in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over), Linklater, Tom Cruise (previously taped) and his Hit Man co-stars Adria Arjona, Retta and Sanjay Rao.
Arjona referenced the recent “summer of Glen Powell” headlines, which refer to the 35-year-old starring in Hit Man (which has a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and then, a month later, the highly anticipated sequel Twisters.

Glenn Powell, Bad Robot and IMAX have released a theatrical trailer in support of The Blue Angels Foundation, a non-profit created by former Blue Angels pilots that funds critical services for wounded veterans and their families. The trailer will run nationwide in anticipation of the IMAX original documentary “The Blue Angels,” which starts its IMAX exclusive run May 17.
Opening with an introduction from Powell, the trailer goes inside the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station 1 in San Diego, Calif., a housing and support facility for those receiving care from The Blue Angels Foundation. Founded in 2004, Freedom Station 1 provides transitional care, post-traumatic stress treatment and suicide prevention to help wounded veterans reenter the civilian community.
