Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. When “Succession” director Andrij Parekh heard what show creator Jesse Armstrong had planned for the final season’s eighth episode, “America Decides,” he admitted to being “terrified” due to the logistics involved in creating a full-blown presidential election. For the show’s acclaimed production designer, Stephen H. Carter, the “fear was that we wouldn’t be able to pull off the scale of that in a single episode.”
Carter – a four-time Emmy nominee who was once again nominated for “Succession” this year thanks to “America Decides” – reveals to Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview that the research process that went into creating the Atn newsroom started maybe a month before the crew even had a finished script. “It was looking pretty challenging,” he says. “We pitched a control room connected to a studio set, with some hallways in between, you know, things like that. But none of them had...

These directors, who have never won an Emmy, may finally get a chance at a nomination and perhaps a win with these buzzy series.
Karyn Kusama
It’s been 20 years since Kusama made her directorial debut, but she’s yet to receive an Emmy nomination. The “Jennifer’s Body” director stepped behind the camera for the pilot episode of this year’s breakout drama “Yellowjackets” on Showtime.
Lorene Scafaria
Best known for writing and directing 2019’s “Hustlers,” Scafaria helmed the seventh episode of the latest season of HBO’s massive hit, “Succession.” Titled “Too Much Birthday,” the heart-wrenching episode, which centered on Kendall’s lavish 40th birthday party, could — and should — also get recognition for production design done by Stephen H. Carter.
Cherien Dabis
Dabis is at the helm of the seventh episode of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” perfectly titled “The Boy From 6B.” The hour both moves...

Oscar-winning production designers Hannah Beachler (“Black Panther”), Barbara Ling (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Adam Stockhausen (“Grand Budapest Hotel”) and David and Sandy Wasco (“La La Land”) also signed on.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with HBO, for this edition we look at how executive producer and director Mark Mylod, cinematographers Christopher Norr and Patrick Capone, and production designer Stephen H. Carter expanded the scope and cutthroat character psychology in Season 3 of “Succession.”
“Succession,” more than any television show in the last several years, has gotten tagged with the term “Shakespearean” — in part because that’s what people say when a show is meaty and good. But it’s also shorthand to describe the show’s blend of abusive family drama and exquisitely sharp humor, driven by both the writing and the show’s visual style. “Succession” not only dangles the question of who will Daddy Roy kiss but visually undercuts the privileged bubbles in which the Roys live.

“All The Bells Say,” the title of the Season 3 finale of “Succession,” comes from John Berryman’s poem “Dream Song 29” — but the full line is “All the bells say: too late.” And too late is how it goes for a lot of things in the episode. The Roy siblings’ unsuccessful attempt to “coup” their father, of course, comes too late, but out of time too are Tom’s (Matthew Macfadyen) patience within his own marriage, Roman’s (Kieran Culkin) hopes that he has changed his relationship with his father, and Waystar Royco’s ability to eat instead of being eaten. Director Mark Mylod’s ability to keep wide-ranging freedom of movement within scenes — hallmarks of the series’ blocking and composition — while still pulling the noose tighter around the Roys’ necks is part of what makes the episode’s emotional journey so grueling, and so outstanding.

Owen Wilson (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Zoolander 2”) and Ed Helms (“The Hangover” films, “We’re the Millers”) star in the Alcon Entertainment comedy “Father Figures,” marking the directorial debut of veteran cinematographer Lawrence Sher (“The Hangover” films).
Wilson and Helms are Kyle and Peter Reynolds, brothers whose eccentric mother raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out together to find their real father, and end up learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.
The film also stars J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), comedian Katt Williams, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-actor Terry Bradshaw, Ving Rhames (the “Mission Impossible” films), Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”), and Oscar nominee June Squibb (“Nebraska”), with Oscar winner Christopher Walken (“The Deer Hunter”), and Oscar nominee Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as the twins’ mother.

Tom McCarthy's Spotlight has Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Brian d'Arcy James and Liev Schreiber team together to investigate allegations of child abuse committed by Catholic priests. Billy Crudup, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Len Cariou, Neal Huff, Jamey Sheridan, Michael Cyril Creighton and Jimmy LeBlanc round out the terrific ensemble, with the voice of Richard Jenkins as Richard Sipe.

At the Spotlight dinner hosted by Bobby Cannavale, Laura Linney, Kelli O’Hara and Christian Borle with Candice Bergen attending, screenwriter Josh Singer praised his producers Nicole Rocklin and Blye Pagon Faust, costume designer Wendy Chuck and production designer Stephen H. Carter. Unlike the team behind Alan J. Pakula's All The President's Men, which had Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's book as a primary source, the Spotlight team had to do the research themselves.

Like many of its characters, Kill Your Darlings is a film that lacks a narrative direction. It never seems quite sure what story it wants to tell. Some will probably argue the film itself is then a metaphor for said characters, but I have a hard time subscribing to that theory just as much as I wasn't able to buy it with Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring earlier this year. If that's the case, so be it, but it doesn't take away from the hollowness I was left with once the credits started to roll. At the outset, our central focus is a young Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe). We're introduced to his father (David Cross) and his psychologically ill mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and learn he was just accepted into Columbia University, where the bulk of the film takes place. He seems to know he wants to be a...
