The sister of Sharon Tate spoke about the prison release of Manson Family member Leslie Van Houten for the first time.
Speaking to ABC News just days after Van Houten’s release to a “transitional living facility” after 53 years in prison, Debra Tate said, “Is she a nice girl? No. Is she an animal? I think she was then, and I fear that she still is.”

Leslie Van Houten, who in 1969 participated in a double murder at the direction of Charles Manson, was released from prison on Tuesday morning. Nancy Tetreault, a lawyer for Van Houten, confirmed her release to Rolling Stone and said the prison had kept the exact date and time confidential. “She is safely in her transitional living facility and doing well,” Tetreault says.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom — who blocked efforts for Leslie Van Houten to be paroled five times previously — announced Friday, July 7, that he won’t contest a California appellate court’s decision to allow for her parole. Newsom had until Monday, July 10, to file a challenge with the Supreme Court.
“The Governor is disappointed by the Court of Appeal’s decision to release Ms. Van Houten but will not pursue further action as efforts to further appeal are unlikely to succeed,” Erin Mellon, spokesperson for the governor’s office, said in a statement via NBC News.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday that he won’t ask the state Supreme Court to block parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten.
The governor’s office said it was unlikely that the state’s high court would consider an appeal of a lower court ruling that Van Houten should be released. That means Van Houten will likely be freed after serving 53 years for participating in the murders of Leno and Rosemary Labianca, who were killed in 1969 at their Los Feliz home.
The murders came two nights after the murder of actress Sharon Tate and four others in Benedict Canyon. Van Houten did not participate in the Tate mansion killings.
“More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal killings, the victims’ families still feel the impact,” the statement said.

Leslie Van Houten, a member of the Manson Family who was convicted of committing two of the cult’s murders, will be released from prison in a matter of weeks, Van Houten’s attorney said Friday.
The California Parole Board had recommended Van Houten be released in 2022, a recommendation California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed. On May 30 of this year, an appeals court overturned Newsom’s veto and ordered Van Houten to be freed.
Newsom had until July 12 to challenge that ruling, but ultimately opted not to do so.

Charles Manson and other members of the Manson Family were obsessed with The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” Lyrics of the song may have inspired the Manson Family’s actions. Paul McCartney said The Beatles’ “Blackbird” was supposed to be uplifting. The Beatles | John Pratt / Stringer
Charles Manson felt The Beatles‘ “Blackbird” was supposed to encourage violence. It was one of several songs from the same Beatles album that intrigued the cult leader. Subsequently, Paul McCartney revealed that Manson partly understood one aspect of “Blackbird.”

Members of the Manson Family infamously obsessed with The White Album. According to the book Helter Skelter, they were particularly fixated on five tunes from the record: “Piggies,” “Helter Skelter,” “Revolution 1,” “Revolution 9,” and “Blackbird.”
Manson felt a race war between Black and white Americans was on the horizon. He thought The Beatles were using the song “Blackbird” to encourage the war.

In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.

Linda Kasabian, a former member of the notorious Manson family cult, died last month at a hospital in Tacoma, Washington. She was 73.
Kasabian died on January 21, and a death notice ran in the local newspaper Tacoma News Tribune, which named the former cult member as Linda Chiochios, one of the names she used after the Manson murder trials. Multiple media outlets have obtained copies of her death certificate where no cause is listed.
Born Linda Drouin in Maine in 1949, Kasabian moved to Los Angeles aged 20, where she became entwined in the brutal rampage, which became known as the “two nights of mayhem” during which members of Charles Manson’s cult murdered seven people, including actress Sharon Tate.
Tate was the wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, and she was more than eight months pregnant at the time of the murder.

Director Michael Chaves and company are not subtle about their influences in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. It’s there in the first scene. As we’re reintroduced to Ed and Lorraine Warren, darkness has fallen over a family, and a Satanic presence is in the home. A young child lays bedridden, cursed to endure demonic possession, and an old priest arrives late in the foggy night. When Father Gordon gets out of his cab, The Conjuring even reenacts an image so famously associated with The Exorcist that Warner Bros. made it that movie’s poster almost 50 years ago.

Update, October 28: The site of the infamous murder of Leno and Rosemary Labianca by the Charles Manson gang is back on the market. Zak Bagans, the star of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, bought the house last year when it was listed at $1.98 million.
Bagans reportedly bought the home for a film production. But while living there, he claims that he decided the project should not move forward out of respect for the Labianca family.
The two-bedroom, two-bath home is now listed for $2.2 million.

Oxygen’s “Manson: The Women” features four of Charles Manson’s female followers, some of who feel regret for the murders of Sharon Tate and her friends 50 years ago, while others don’t quite feel the same empathy.
The special includes interviews with Catherine Louise “Gypsy” Share, Sandra “Blue” Good, Dianne “Snake” Lake (who was 14 when she joined the Family) and Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme (who is also known for attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975). None of these women were directly involved with the Tate-labianca murders, but were all sent to prison for other reasons and for a variety of lengths — Share, for example, served five years for armed robbery.
The four women talk about their impression of Charlie, whom they all deemed charming and capable of making someone feel special, what their life was like before and during their time as a Manson Family member, and what happened shortly after Manson,...

Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood hit movie theaters last week to critical acclaim. The film — starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as the late Sharon Tate — follows Charles Manson and his followers leading up to their two-day killing spree in 1969.
Tarantino, an enthusiastic student of Hollywood history, featured some of Los Angeles’ most iconic hotspots from the 60s in his film — including infamous locales such as the home Tate shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski, where she, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Voytek Frykowski and Steve Parent were murdered by members of the Manson Family.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” takes place around the time of the infamous Manson family murders of Sharon Tate and her friends under the dark influence of Charles Manson. The movie deviates — a lot — from what really happened on the night of Aug. 8, 1969, including in the moment when a young Manson follower bails out on her friends before the home invasion.
Did it really happen? Not exactly. But there’s a grain of truth. And seriously, stop reading now if you want to avoid spoilers.

Sony opens Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on July 26, close to the 50th anniversary of the murder of Sharon Tate and four others. A front-page Variety story on Aug. 11, 1969, two days after the killings, said police described the scene as “a ritualistic mass murder.” Showbiz has since then offered many tasteless depictions of the killings via low-budget exploitation films and TV offerings. Even with a “classy” production like the 1976 “Helter Skelter,” Variety reported that Lorimar intended to “spice up” the four-hour miniseries for overseas by adding more violence and sex.
In November 2018, Debra Tate (Sharon’s sister) wrote a piece for Variety’s special issue on criminal justice reform, American (In)Justice. Quentin Tarantino doesn't need an introduction - he's the auteur who brought us gratuitously gory films such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Django Unchained. Now, he's onto his ninth film with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a $100 million project that convinced even Leonardo DiCaprio to take a hefty pay cut. Since Tarantino only plans to make 10 movies, this is certainly going to be a treat, boasting a cast of the fine actors to prove it. In the movie, the writer-director crafts a narrative that touches upon one of the most disturbing murders in Hollywood history - that of celebrity Sharon Tate under the orders of Charles Manson.
Fictional Elements
The Manson murders won't be the main focus of the plot, which is still being kept under wraps. But we'll certainly see everyone involved in the case, including Tate (Margot Robbie), Manson (Damon Herriman), Manson's followers, and a handful of '60s celebrities.

Some months in advance of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a film about the Manson murders, comes Mary Harron’s “Charlie Says,” a very strained attempt to understand the motivations of the women who killed for Charles Manson.
“Charlie Says” is based on a book by Karlene Faith, a teacher who started working with three of Manson’s “girls” three years after they were put in prison for murder. The title comes from the constant refrain of these brainwashed young women, who still believe outlandish things that Manson told them about becoming winged elves after a race war.
The sound design is atmospheric and subjective in the first scenes, where we see Leslie Van Houten showering after the stabbing of Leno and Rosemary Labianca, but this subjectivity is abandoned once the film takes us to the Spahn Ranch where Manson holds sway.

For almost as long as we’ve been hearing about “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino and Sony Pictures, which will release the film, have tried to dispel the notion that it will be all about the Manson murders.
They couldn’t have made their point better than they did with the teaser trailer released Wednesday. Tarantino signals with the teaser that that the film won’t just be a portrait of one horrible night in 1969, but rather of an entire era, sweeping across at least three years prior to the Manson murders.
Because he’s Quentin Tarantino, he doled out those clues via obscure Bruce Lee knowledge, old TV and movie marquees. Let’s look at all the signs, literal and figurative, that “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won’t surrender its story to Manson.

Leslie Van Houten, who was 19 when she joined other followers of Charles Manson on a 1969 murder spree, is asking the state of California to release her on parole. Over the past five decades, the convict, now 69, has made nearly two dozen attempts to be freed from the California Institute for Women, according to Reuters.
The California Board of Parole Hearings has twice recommended to the governor that he release her, but Jerry Brown has twice refused. The most recent attempt was last January. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger similarly barred the release of people associated with Manson.

The ’60s may have ended abruptly on August 9, 1969, as Joan Didion wrote in “The White Album,” but our attempts to understand the events of that day show no sign of slowing down. With Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” set to be released on the 50th anniversary of the Tate-labianca murders, “American Psycho” director Mary Harron has beaten him to the punch by a year with “Charlie Says” — not that the film contains any great insights about Charles Manson or the crimes of his murderous Family.
Harron focuses her attention on three of Manson’s acolytes: Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón), and especially Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), who after having their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment found themselves being taught by a grad student (Merritt Wever) at the California Institution for Women in an attempt to undo some of the cult leader’s teachings.
