- He had two sons, named Bob and Doug.
- Became a member of the Order of Canada in 1991.

- Chief referee of the NHL from 1950 to 1959, he refereed seven straight Stanley Cup finals from 1952 to 1958.
- Played in the Canadian Football League from 1936 to 1941, and was on the Toronto Argonauts' Grey Cup champions of 1937-1938; he scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the 1938 championship game.
- Passed away the same week as Canadian hockey legend Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion (March 12, 2006)
