NBC has canceled Debris, Deadline confirmed on Thursday, after the fate of the freshman sci-fi detective drama had been up in the air following its May 24 finale that wrapped up a 13-episode run.
It was one of five NBC shows — along with Good Girls, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Manifest and Ellen’s Game of Games — that were left off the network’s list this month of returning series and new shows. A big swing and the first NBC 2020 pilot to get a series order and premiere on the network, a renewal had not been looking promising.
The series, from Fringe creator J.H. Wyman and hailing from Legendary TV and Universal TV starred Jonathan Tucker and Riann Steele as agents from two different continents and two different mind-sets. They had to work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind. Norbert Leo Butz, Scoobius Pip,...

NBC, Fox, ABC and CBS all unveiled their Fall 2021 TV schedules at this week’s “upfront” presentations to advertisers – conducted virtually, due to the pandemic – showing of which new series will be added to lineups and which old favorites are returning. This also meant revealing the broadcast TV shows that won’t be making it back for the 2021-2022 season in the process.
But then there are the straggler series, the ones that networks have yet to make a decision on, even though their slates are set. NBC is picking up the pieces from its coronavirus-impacted pilot season.
The network has ordered alien spacecraft drama “Debris,” the only pilot which managed to complete shooting before the production shutdown, to series.
News of the order comes exactly a week after NBC announced plans to stagger the remainder of its 12 pilots across this and next year’s development seasons. NBC still intends to shoot five of its buzziest pilots, including that for “Langdon” which centers around the character made famous by Dan Brown and Tom Hanks, later this year.
“Debris” follows two agents from two different continents, and two different mindsets, who must work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind.
Jonathan Tucker plays one of the agents Bryan Beneventi, who is described as a headstrong, smart CIA operative currently working on the investigation of strange occurrences. British actress Riann Steele plays the other Finola Jones.

It's been incredibly rewarding to seen the landscape of film change over the past few years. Yes, blockbusters are only getting bigger and bigger, but we're also seeing a real divide, not only in the content between theaters, TV, and streaming services, but in the actual content being delivered. While things in film have been getting safer and safer on the big screen, there's been a recent surge of truly unique filmmaking thanks to streaming services like Netflix, who are willing to take a leap of faith.
This is the case with Death Note, a film that's been in development for God knows how long. Like Ghost in the Shell and Akira before it, Death Note has passed through several hands on its way to being a film. It passed through the likes of Shane Black and Warner Bros. before it finally landed with Adam Wingard and Netflix, who were...

One of the most indelible images from the Death Note anime series (and the manga it’s based on) is the haunting appearance of the Shinigami Ryuk, a death god visible to Light Turner, the high school student in possession of a notebook with the power to kill. With filming now underway on Adam Wingard’s live-action Death Note movie, the voice of Ryuk has been revealed.
Mashable reports that Willem Dafoe will voice Ryuk in the live-action Death Note film. An official image of Ryuk’s appearance in the new movie has yet to be revealed (the image above is from the 2006–2007 anime adaptation), but it’s likely that we’ll see a CG creation of the curious death god with an appetite for apples.

The notebook with grave consequences is back, as filming is officially underway on Adam Wingard's Death Note movie.
Based on Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's popular manga (which was previously adapted as an anime series and several live-action movies), the new Death Note film stars Nat Wolff as the main character who discovers that if he writes someone's name in his newfound notebook while imagining what they look like, they will die. This otherworldly power allows Wolff's character to play God, and it's up to the mysterious "L" (Keith Stanfield) to put a stop to the bodies hitting the floor.
Death Note is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2017. Below, we have the official press release with full details, including Wingard's (The Woods, You're Next) thoughts on the project:

After bringing some flare to indie thrillers and horror with The Guest and You're Next, director Adam Wingard has just been lined up to take on a studio project. THR reports the filmmaker has just signed on to direct an adaptation of the Japanese horror manga Death Note. Previously, directors like Shane Black and Gus Van Sant were linked to the project, but neither of them stuck with the adaptation. With Wingard signed, it sounds like he might finally be the one to make it happen along with producers Roy Lee and Dan Lin (The Lego Movie), as well as Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow) and "Heroes" series star Masi Oka. For those who aren't familiar with Takeshi Obata's manga, here's the official synopsis: Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note,...

Earlier this year, it was reported that Tom Cruise is adding yet another sci-fi thriller to his resume with Warner Bros.' big screen adaptation of the Japanese novel Yukikaze. The actor recently starred in Universal's Oblivion, and will be seen in WB's Edge Of Tomorrow next year. According to Variety, screenwriter Dan Mazeau (who previously worked on Wrath Of The Titans, as well as unproduced screenplays for The Flash and Jonny Quest for the studio) has been hired to adapt Yukikaze. The story "originates with a hyper-dimensional passageway appearing over Antarctica, allowing fighters from an alien force to attempt a terrestrial invasion — resulting in a united humanity fending off the attack." The novel has since spawned multiple anime and manga series. Viz Media's Jason Hoffs and 3 Arts' Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally are on board as producers, with Jon Berg overseeing the project. I just wanted to give you a heads up that Tom Cruise's new sci-fi film All You Need is Kill has been re-titled Edge of Tomorrow, and a badass new poster has been released for it!
Personally I think All You Need is Kill is a much better title. Edge of Tomorrow sounds like a basic, boring movie title for a film I wouldn't be interested in seeing. It also sounds like a film Roland Emmerich would direct.
Warner Bros. has announced that they are officially bringing the movie to Comic-Con, and they will give fans a look at the first footage from the Doug Liman-directed film. I can't wait to see it! Especially after seeing this poster. Here is the press release with all of the details:

Emily Blunt is in talks to join Tom Cruise in director Doug Liman’s sci-fi/action project, All You Need Is Kill, reports Variety. The film is an adaptation of the Japanese graphic novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and is described as follows:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again.
