Almost two weeks ago, Netflix dropped its Beckham docuseries — giving viewers perhaps the most access ever to the soccer star subject. That has less to do with the project’s four-plus-hour runtime, however, than it does with the fact that David Beckham, for all of his fame, has never been much of a talker.
“I don’t think the guy ever sat for more than 20 minutes in his life and talked about himself,” Fisher Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter. The documentarian (The Lincoln Project, Bright Lights, Before the Flood) and actor (Succession, Asteroid City), who directed and produced the instantly popular series that still sits atop the streamer’s global Top 10, spent days with David Beckham to coax out some candor on his complicated career and personal life. The result is, yes, a documentary whose subject is also one of its producers. But it’s also as thorough a portrait...

My first introduction to David Beckham was the infamous Argentina versus England round-of-16 match in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. That was my first tryst with international football, and I also became an Argentina fan just because the majority of my family were Brazil supporters, and I had to be a rebellious kid. So Beckham, as I heard, was the biggest threat to my team. Argentina won that match on penalty, but more importantly, Beckham had to leave the field in the forty-seventh minute of the game after getting a red card. The red card was a farce. Even the man who was fouled by Beckham, Argentine midfielder Diego Simeone, says so in the Netflix documentary series. The Fisher Stevens docuseries highlights the infamous incident, along with all the other significant moments of David Beckham’s life, in the span of four hour-long episodes.

There’s no better way to encapsulate David Beckham’s unbridled star power than the story of how Fisher Stevens ended up directing his Netflix docuseries “Beckham.”
“I got a call from Leo DiCaprio’s office,” recalls Stevens, who directed the DiCaprio-produced 2016 climate change film “The Flood.” “Leo and David were hanging out, and David [had] been looking for a director of his documentary — and Leo suggested me.”
The anecdote doesn’t end there. Stevens, a multi-hyphenate who won an Oscar for producing the 2009 dolphin documentary “The Cove,” and appeared on three seasons of HBO’s hit series “Succession” as Waystar Royco publicist Hugo, wasn’t sure he wanted to take on the job directing the Beckham project. “I didn’t really know much about him other than, you know, he was kind of a good-looking brand guy married to a Spice Girl,” he tells Variety.

Elizabeth Chambers reflected on spending the Covid-19 lockdown with ex-husband Armie Hammer.
Early in the pandemic, the former couple and their two young children quarantined with Hammer’s father and stepmother at their home in the Cayman Islands.
Speaking with British GQ at the time, the disgraced Call Me by Your Name actor said lockdown made him feel “like a wolf who got caught in a snare”.
“A wolf who wanted to chew his own foot off,” Hammer described. “I was just like, ‘I can’t do this.’”
“He was the worst,” Chambers told Elle of Hammer during the lockdown.
According to Chambers, it wasn’t long before Hammer decided to head back to California to help his friend renovate a dilapidated motel near Joshua Tree National Park, leaving her and the children behind in the Caymans.

Ashton Kutcher has explained why he looks so “awkward” in recent red carpet photos with Reese Witherspoon.
Images of the pair, who co-star in the new Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine, went viral earlier this week, with many highlighting that they looked uncomfortable standing next to each other.
It turns out that Bad Moms actor Mila Kunis, who has been married to Kutcher since 2016, also thinks so.
Witherspoon spoke about the photos on US show Today on Monday (6 February), telling hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that Kunis “emailed” the pair after seeing the images online.
“She goes, ‘You guys look so awkward on the red carpet together’,” Witherspoon revealed.
In a separate interview, Kutcher revealed that it was Kunis that alerted him to the fact that the photos had been given the “meme” treatment.

John Cleese is rebooting his classic BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, it was announced this week.
The British actor and writer, who starred in the original series as hotel owner Basil Fawlty, is collaborating on the new show with Spinal Tap filmmaker Rob Reiner.
He will write and star in the revival, which is currently in development, along with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
The Fawlty Towers reboot will reportedly explore “how Cleese’s over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world”.
Cleese claimed that an initial meeting about the series had yielded “one of the best creative sessions I can remember”.
So what happened to the main four castmembers of Fawlty Towers?

After Fawlty Towers finished, Cleese, who played bedraggled hotelier Basil Fawlty, went on to enjoy a successful film career.

Sandi Toksvig has spoken out against the Church of England’s stance on same-sex marriage, saying that it is “causing severe mental health problems for the LGBTQ+ community”.
On Wednesday (8 February), the Church’s national assembly will vote on a proposal that clergy will be given the option to adopt blessing prayers for couples in same-sex marriages.
The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that, while he “joyfully” welcomed the blessings proposals, he would not personally carry them out.
Speaking to BBC News, Qi host Toksvig said that she had met with Welby last month to discuss the topic, but found the conversation “very disappointing”.
“So what we have is two very polarised sides of this argument. The problem is, there’s only one side that is impinging on the lives of others,” she said.
“And I’m afraid the very conservative people, who interpret the Bible with less love than I would hope,...

Brendan Fraser has called the Golden Globes award a “hood ornament” that “means nothing to me”.
This year, the 54-year-old actor was nominated for Best Actor in a motion picture drama for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.
Austin Butler ended up winning the award for his performance in Elvis.
In a new interview with Howard Stern, Fraser said Butler’s Globes win for Elvis was “well deserved” and a “big win for him”.
He added that he had no interest in winning the prize himself.
“I found myself wondering is this a cynical nomination,” Fraser said. “I couldn’t really tell because of my history with them and that I still have yet to see the results from their reformation. We all are still awaiting that, to tell you the truth... What does matter is that it would mean nothing to me. I don’t want it.

Reese Witherspoon says Legally Blonde 3 would not be complete without Jennifer Coolidge.
The actors both featured in the 2001 film, with Witherspoon playing protagonist Elle Woods and Coolidge playing her friend Paulette. The second film was later released in 2003.
In 2018 it was confirmed that a third movie was in the works, and now Witherspoon seems to have alleged that Coolidge will definitely be a part of it.
"There is no Legally Blonde 3 without Jennifer Coolidge,” said Witherspoon while being interviewed on Entertainment Tonight.
"I’m beyond myself about Jennifer Coolidge," said the 46-year-old actor. "She deserves every one of those flowers she is receiving right now."
In January, Coolidge won her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Limited Series/Motion Picture, for her role in the highly credited White Lotus.

The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.
Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).
So here’s a full list of who appeared on seasons one, two, three and four…
Season one
Winner: Nicola Roberts – Queen Bee
Jason Manford – Hedgehog
Katherine Jenkins – Octopus
CeeLo Green – Monster
Denise van Outen – Fox
Jake Shears – Unicorn
Skin – Duck
Kelis – Daisy

Amazon has announced that more than 40 presenters and former professionals will be part of its English Premier League lineup, with its coverage of the soccer competition kicking-off in December.
Amazon secured rights to show the Premier League in the UK last year, and will air 20 matches a season. Coverage will launch on December 3 with mid-week fixtures, before it shows 10 matches on December 26-27.
BBC presenter Gabby Logan will anchor the Sunset+Vine-produced action, alongside Eilidh Barbour — a BBC and Sky broadcaster — and Jim Rosenthal, a veteran who has covered the world’s biggest sporting events for major UK broadcasters.
Logan is already hosting weekly Amazon soccer show Back of the Net, but her presence on live coverage is still a coup for the Jeff Bezos-owned streamer. Logan is one of the BBC’s highest-profile presenters, taking home a salary of more than £290,000 and hosting shows including Sports Personality of the Year.

Former England manager, Glenn Hoddle believes that Newcastle United are now an established mid-table team rather than relegation candidates.
After the Magpies 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford, Hoddle complimented Steve McClaren’s ability to influence the game in his column for the Daily Mail.
McClaren’s arrival on Tyneside has been a relatively smooth transition but the jury is still out on whether the Newcastle head coach will be a success during his time at St James’ Park.
His positive possession based football that he established at Derby is something that he is evidently trying to implement at Newcastle but yesterday he also showed he can adapt defensively in order to grind out a point.
Hoddle believes that McClaren adapted well after Man Utd averaged more than 70% possession and their passing fluency ensured Newcastle struggled to get any sort of foothold in the game whatsoever.

Tottenham Hotspur have had a lot of great – and very memorable – players over the years.
From outright club legends like Bill Nicholson and Dave Mackay, to modern legends like Gary Lineker and Glenn Hoddle and post-millennium superstars like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric there are players at the club that nobody will ever forget, let alone the club’s fans.

He joked: "We're going for a break, we've just sent for a towel!"

The BBC is easily winning the battle of the pundits at the 2014 World Cup, according to poll results.
The survey reveals that - despite getting complaints over its commentary and mocked on social media at various points during the tournament - fans still prefer the BBC's team to ITV's offering from Brazil.
Digital Spy's poll of nearly 4,000 fans had an overwhelming 73.90% backing the BBC as their favourite, while ITV lagged behind with 17.64%.
8.46% said that they opted to stick the TV on mute to avoid TV pundits altogether.

Generally, The Playlist offices don't care much for sports, but there are definitely more than a few of us watching the World Cup. And it has been a helluva tournament so far, with defending champions Spain out of the contest already, along with England, who just couldn't get it together. So for all of you in the U.K. mourning your early exit from the World Cup, here's a little cinephile treat. Back in 1982, ITV focused an entire episode of "The South Bank Show" to Werner Herzog, and as usual, you should probably watch it. Across 60 minutes, it jumps around with the director, highlighting his films to date, talking with him about his work with Klaus Kinski, showing him reading dramatically on a train and ... talking about soccer. In fact, you'll see Herzog play soccer, as he talks about his fave English footballer Glenn Hoddle. We wonder what he thinks of English football now?...

Brazil; a country famed for its sunshine, vibrancy and unrivalled passion for the beautiful game. What do we give it in return? Adrian Chiles. It hardly seems like a fair deal.
Is it any surprise that Chiles and his ITV team found themselves under fire from Brazilian members of the public, who pelted the ITV glass studio? We've had to suffer Chiles and Andy Townsend's "top, top" commentary cliches for years, so count yourself lucky guys.
Of course, the studio attack wasn't really about the arrival of Adrian Chiles's face on Brazilian soil. It was actually about deep-rooted political and social unrest and the fact some people are not happy at the money that has been pumped into the 'carnival of football'.
However, give the Brazilians a month of ITV Sport 'banter' and the terrible twosome of Tyldesley and Townsend and they'll soon realise that there are things much...

The former Manchester United captain currently works with the Republic of Ireland setup, and has also been linked with an assistant role at Aston Villa under Paul Lambert.
An ITV spokesperson said: "Roy has been a tremendous part of our pundit team in recent years, but we fully understand his decision to concentrate wholly on his coaching. We wish him every success for the future."
Adrian Chiles will present ITV's World Cup 2014 coverage, and will be joined by pundits including Lee Dixon, Patrick Vieira, Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright, Andros Townsend, Martin O'Neill, Gordon Strachan, Gus Poyet and Fabio Cannavaro.
Keane previously appeared at ITV's World Cup launch two weeks ago, but has decided not to travel to Brazil.
ITV is thought to be open to Keane returning in the future.

Amongst the widely speculated impending departures of hugely talented young left back Luke Shaw and complete midfielder Adam Lallana, the one loss that Southampton may shortly come to feel worse than any other is that of manager Mauricio Pochettino. Having arrived under a cloud of suspicion and bad blood barely over a year ago after the seemingly misjudged sacking of predecessor Nigel Adkins, Pochettino has come to be a greatly loved and admired figure among the St. Mary’s faithful.
Now his success at building a relegation battling team into a comfortably top half side, playing good to watch football and beating the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, has resulted in Pochettino’s departure for Tottenham this week. Southampton will have to move swiftly and decisively to find a replacement that can maintain the optimism of this year’s campaign and prevent a mass exodus of young talent.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has given Southampton’s Argentinian boss Mauricio Pochettino his backing to potentially replace Tim Sherwood as manager at White Hart Lane.
The former England and Spurs boss made 377 league appearances for the Lilywhites and enjoys legendary status at White Hart Lane, but he has recently been critical of affairs at the club, including Sherwood’s public shaming of Spurs’ players after their emphatic Premier League loss against Chelsea and the impact of the influx of players who were brought in to the club last summer following the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Hoddle himself has said that he came close to retaking the reins at White Hart Lane following Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal in December of last year, but he has now taken to giving his support to Pochettino in spite of other potential candidates that are said to include Frank de Boer and Rafa Benitez.

Fc Basel have denied speculation suggesting Tottenham have asked to speak to their manager, Murat Yakin, about replacing Andre Villas-Boas, according to Team Talk.
Villas-Boas was sacked by Spurs earlier this week following his side’s disastrous 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, a result that leaves them eight points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
And reports in Switzerland suggested Tottenham had made enquiries into Yakin’s potential availability, with some going as far as to claim his agent was due in London for talks.
Yakin has impressed since taking over at Basel last year, guiding them to the domestic title while also knocking Spurs out of the Europa League.
However, Basel insist there has been no contact between the two clubs regarding Yakin, sentiments which were echoed by the 39-year-old manager – who has also been linked with Lazio – who said:

Tottenham are on the hunt for a new manager after the increasingly inevitable departure of Andre Villas-Boas was confirmed in the wake of the chastening 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool. The manager was summoned to an emergency meeting after the loss, and his departure by mutual consent was announced.
There are many possible options for Daniel Levy to turn to, and the Spurs chairman is under huge pressure to get this appointment right after the expensive failure of Avb. Michael Laudrup, Frank De Boer and Fabio Capello have been mentioned as potential successors, but one who could surprise a few onlookers is ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, who has been touted by BBC pundit Gary Lineker.
Hoddle has not managed at Premier League level since leaving Spurs themselves in 2003. His reign ended in disappointment, leaving Spurs in the relegation zone with four points from their six opening games.

Former footballer says UK lets in too many immigrants and says his sports background puts him on a par with Hollywood stars
The actor and former footballer Vinnie Jones has branded England "past its sell-by date" and said that it had opened its doors to too many immigrants.
The Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels star lives in Los Angeles and said that he could never be tempted back. "There's nothing to come back to here. To me, England is past its sell-by date," he told the Radio Times. "It's not the country I grew up in. It's a European country now.
"If someone blindfolded you and put you on a plane in La, and you landed at Heathrow and they took it off, you wouldn't have a clue where you were."
Asked whether he might make a poster boy for the anti-immigration party Ukip, the British actor replied: "You what?...

We are now just two months away from the start of the FIFA World Cup 1998. Hosted in France, the tournament looks destined to become a defining moment in world football with the competing teams expanded from 24 to 32 for the first time ever. One of those teams competing will be Glenn Hoddle’s England.
A remarkable performance in Rome last year, in which England where sturdy and stoic in the face of Italian pressure means that England go into the competition with the confidence that they can battle it out with the world’s best. That performance may come to epitomize what Hoddle’s England is all about. Tactically astute, flexible and with an important balance of youth and experience, England have cause to be excited. Indeed, all over the pitch that night, England had the makings of an exceptional international side.

Tottenham Hotspur have had some fantastic players over the years; Dave Mackay, Graham Roberts, Jimmy Greaves, Pat Jennings, Ray Clemence, Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle, Ricky Villa, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Teddy Sheringham and Ledley King to name a few.
But for every handful of superstars there has been the occasional complete flop – the kind of player whose signature has baffled fans from the get-go.
Young and upcoming stars who never lived up to their potential, exotic foreign imports who couldn’t hack it in the best league in the world and some outright stinkers who should never have been considered for purchase by any stretch of the imagination – Spurs have done it all when it comes to bad signings.
So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 players who should never have worn the white shirt of Tottenham Hotspur…

What came as the biggest surprise in football to many this Boxing Day was not the Adam Johnson goal, which saw Sunderland overhaul Manchester City, but rather the inexplicable sacking of Nottingham Forest manager Sean O’Driscoll.
O’Driscoll is the latest man to fall victim of the unpredictable managerial lottery and was relieved of his duties just hours after watching his side overcome Leeds United 4-2 – a team that they were actually trailing in the table prior to the match.
Following two years of disappointment under managers Billy Davies, Steve McClaren and Steve Cotterill respectively, Sean O’Driscoll had appeared to be moving the team in the right direction.
Forest have made a reasonably strong start to the season, and currently lie only one point of the play-off places in the nPower Championship. They also possess arguably one of the strongest squads in the league, much of which was...

In an interview with the Independent newspaper this morning, former England manager Glenn Hoddle who almost led his nation to victory in the Euro ’96 tournament on home soil seemed to suggest that he would be ready to step into the breach to manage England at this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament:
When asked if he felt he had unfinished business with the Fa, he responded with the following loaded answer:”If I were to die tomorrow, my life would be incomplete.” So, could he manage England again?
“Would I get that opportunity? Probably not. But I don’t dwell on the past and, if we fast-forward to the present, I think we have a batch of players capable of going to the Euros and doing well. I find it a very interesting moment. Because Stuart Pearce, Harry Redknapp, Roy Hodgson, myself – anyone – who went to the tournament with the status of...

There are a lot of positives to be taken from England’s victory against Spain on Saturday; but if history has taught us anything, it’s that we must not, as England fans, get carried away by one good result. Prior to Saturday’s 1-0 win against Spain, it had been 31 long years since an England football team had beaten the reigning World Champions. On the 13th of May 1980, England played host to 1978 World Cup Winners Argentina, in what was Diego Maradona’s first appearance on English soil. Two goals from Liverpool’s David Johnson and a goal from the soon to be Southampton striker Kevin Keegan led England to a 3-1 win that day, and all seemed rosy.
Until four days later England played Wales in the ‘British Home Championship’. Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground was the venue that day, and England’s players appeared to never even come out...

Stars from the British sitcom 'Allo 'Allo are to reunite at the Spring Memorabilia Show at the NEC this weekend (March 26 to 27).
Cast members from the series, which aired on BBC1 from 1982 to 1992, will be at the event on both days to host panels, meet fans, sign autographs and pose for photographs.
Conceived as a parody of wartime drama Secret Army, the classic comedy took place in a French town occupied by the Germans during World War 2 - complete with a cast of Resistance agents, incompetent Nazis, bemused Raf airmen, buxom French beauties and a linguistically-challenged British spy.
Those attending the convention include Guy Siner (who played effete panzer commander Lieutenant Hubert Gruber), Richard Gibson (dastardly Gestapo officer Herr Otto Flick), Arthur Bostrom (Rugby's vowel-mangling spy Officer Crabtree), Kirsten Cooke (local resistance leader Michelle Dubois), Kim Hartman (Herr Flick's love interest Private Helga Geerhart), John D Collins (downed Raf airman...

How would Sky Sports News react as the votes were counted on a tense election night?
Those of you familiar with Hitchcock's film The Lady Vanishes may remember the characters played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne continuing to obsess about cricket, as war clouds gathered over Europe, and little old ladies bizarrely were put in charge of important messages about troop movements. Well, on election night, I think I found the modern equivalent.
I thought it might be quite fun, as the marathon election programmes began, to turn to Sky Sports News to see if they were even acknowledging that an election was taking place; and blow me if they were not reading out county cricket scores. Having just switched over from some economic expert reporting that in New York the Dow Jones was falling faster than Vanessa Feltz on a bungee rope, it was strangely soothing to find...

London, Feb 26 – Thanks to events such as Live Aid and the recent resurgence of bands like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran, the 1980s was the best musical decade of the last 50 years, according to 11,000 music fans across Europe.
Singing footballers Glenn Hoddle, now 52, and Chris Waddle, 49, had hits in the 80s, reports The Daily Star.
Second place went to the 90s with 25 percent of the vote, then the 70s with 23 percent, the poll said.
Only 19 percent chose the Beatles-led 60s as their favourite decade and a mere 2 percent said it was the 2000s.
