Road House stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with a clever means of making the remake’s fights look realistic without breaking any bones.
Whether or not you think it’s sacrilege to remake the 1989 cult favourite, Road House, it’s arguable that director Doug Liman directed his fight scenes with gleeful rawness – faces are pummelled, bodies are sent crashing through tables, and backsides are well and truly kicked.
It’s possible that Liman’s full-frontal method of shooting his hand-to-hand combat scenes may have left you wondering: how do you make it look as though UFC star Conor McGregor’s just punched Jake Gyllenhaal square in the face without landing the Hollywood star in hospital?
Shared on Twitter over the weekend, a brief clip shows off an intriguing method that stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with for the production – what he calls the ‘four-pass’ or ‘Abcd method’.

Of all the current action stars, there’s likely no current draw with the expertise in fight scenes that Scott Adkins does. Not only has he starred in dozens of low-budget actioners (including the great Undisputed films), in addition to his roles in bigger films like John Wick: Chapter 4, but he also hosts an amazing YouTube show called The Art of Action, where he deconstructs fight scenes in classic movies alongside their original stars. This weekend, like many folks, Adkins decided to watch Prime Video’s Road House remake, and while he had high praise for the movie, he also criticized the use of CGI in the fight scenes.
As posted on X, “I really enjoyed Road House. Doug Liman – great job subverting genre & Gyllenhaal in amazing shape, respect! What a debut from @TheNotoriousMMA happy when a movie like this does well as it’s my bread & butter but c’mon,...

We all love Ngô Thanh Vân, better known in the West by her professional name, Veronica Ngô. First introduced to savvy genre film fans in the ‘00s through her kickass collaborations with Johnny Tri Nguyen in The Rebel (Dòng máu anh hung) and Clash, Ngô has continued to make inroads in the outside of her Vietnamese home market with appearances in films like The Last Jedi, The Old Guard, and The Princess. She is a confirmed ass-kicker, with fighting skills that rival any big-time action star of the last two decades. Four years ago, she starred in director Le-Van Kiet’s Furie, at this year’s SXSW she takes...

Editor’s note: Judging from last year’s positive response to our Read the Screenplay series, Deadline is kicking off a new season of publishing the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race. Stay tuned for more, but Spike Lee is a pretty good place to start.
Spike Lee struck gold in 2019 when he and collaborator Kevin Willmott, along with Charlie Watchel and David Rabinowitz, took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for BlacKkKlansman — Lee’s first-ever Academy Award. With Da 5 Bloods, that movie’s follow-up has already garnered awards-season buzz.

Powerful, beautiful, violent and emotional. Spike Lee has continued his great run by crafting a film that can be enjoyed as an exciting piece of cinema as well as delivering a complex look at the world.

Furie came onto my radar because it’s a martial arts film starring Veronic Ngo. She’s been popping up in movies lately, most notably a small role in The Last Jedi and minor role in the head scratching sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I, however, remember her from The Rebel, a 2007 martial arts film starring and action directed by Johnny Nguyen. You may remember him as the staircase boss from the infamous one take scene in Tony Jaa’s Tom Yum Goon. While it’s been awhile since I’ve seen The Rebel, I remember being pretty impressed with Veronica’s ability as a martial artist. Strangely though, more than 10 years later, I finally get to see her in another martial arts role that isn’t a throw...

It was all the way back in 2009 that we first came across the work of writer-director Bao Tran. The occassion at the time was his short film Bookie - a gorgeously shot period drama with heavy action elements with an electric lead performance from Ken Quitugua who really, really should be a movie star now, please - and we knew we'd come across a major talent. Jump forward a few years and Tran was working as editor on Charlie and Johnny Nguyen's ultimately (and tragically) banned Vietnamese action picture Cho Lon and now he's in the process of launching his own debut feature, The Paper Tigers. A dead-beat dad, an insurance scammer, and an Mma coach find themselves in the middle of a gang...

With only four hours in which the surgery can be performed successfully, the young friends take it upon themselves to infiltrate the hospital and retrieve the donated organ.

Best known around these parts for her key roles in Vietnamese action films The Rebel and Clash - both opposite screen fighter Johnny Tri Nguyen - singer, model and actress Veronica Ngo (Ngo Thanh Van) is adding 'director' to her already impressive resume with a big screen adaptation of a classic Vietnamese fairy tale with Tam Cam: Chuyen Chua Ke. A classic Vietnamese tale with some obvious similarities to the Cinderella story, Ngo seems to be giving the story a bit of the Huntsman treatment with a glossy action-fantasy approach to a previously 'untold' part of the tale featuring large scale battles and some sort of angry, spindly legged cat creature. It's remarkably ambitious stuff for any director in Vietnam - well above the normal...

Call Charlie Nguyen's upcoming Fan Cuong the reverse Back To The Future. There's no going to hte past to get people together here, nope. Instead, in Fan Cuong, long haired rock and roll fan played by comedian Thai Hoa must travel back in time to prevent the singer of the most important band in Vietnamese history (Johnny Tri Nguyen) from abandoning it all for a woman. The solution, of course, is to land the woman before the singer can. It's a phenomenally silly premise from the entire creative team behind martial arts hit The Rebel and, true to form where these guys are concerned, the production value is absolutely top notch. We shared the first teaser a while back and that has now been followed...

Thai Hoa takes the lead in upcoming Vietnamese time travel rock and roll comedy Fan Cuong and while Hoa may not be familiar to audiences outside of Vietnam the rest of the team here certainly is. Fan Cuong brings together the entire creative team from martial arts film The Rebel and throws them into an entirely new context with director Charlie Nguyen also penning the script here and The Rebel leading man Johnny Tri Nguyen showing up as the feathered haired potential savior of Vietnamese rock and roll. It's all very silly, of course, but actually looks quite well done. Subtitles included on the trailer, so take a look below!...

As a tribute to artist H.R. Giger, Javi Recio created the sketch above featuring the Giger drawing the Xenomorph alien that helped make him famous. I've included more art from different artists below. The artist passed away on Monday after suffering a fall in his museum. I've been a huge fan of his art since I was a teenager. A rare export from Vietnam, The Lady Assassin is a classic martial arts romp in the old Shaw Brothers vein. Employing a simple plot and serviceable martial arts, Nguyen Quang Dung's romantic fantasy is buoyed up by an eye-popping cast of gorgeous performers. It is a rare treat when a film from Vietnam breaks free of its domestic shackles and heads out into international waters. Earlier this month we heard that the eagerly anticipated Cho Lon from Twitch favourite Johnny Nguyen had failed to pass the local censorship board, and as a result was forbidden from being screened either on home turf or overseas. No such problems for Nguyen Quang Dung's The Lady Assassin (aka My Nhan Ke), however, which broke box office records when...

The banning of the Nguyen brothers' Cho Lon caused extreme rage in Vietnam yesterday. And not just for filmmakers or film geeks, but all over the country; I haven't seen anything like this before. Previously banned films came and went quietly, but Cho Lon is now the focus of a national conversation. The public reactions from Johnny and Charlie Nguyen to the verdict definitely fuelled the debate and led many people to vent their disgust at the Censorship Board. After the banning, actor Johnny Tri Nguyen said everything he needed to in just one sentence: "What's more to be said? It's like losing my son."His brother Charlie Nguyen, beloved director of The Rebel and Cho Lon, also felt immense sadness at the news. His response from the...

It sucks, I know, but it's official. According to the Vietnam Film Department, Cho Lon (original title: Bụi đời Chợ Lớn) has been banned. Given that local clearance is required before Vietnamese producers are permitted to release a film internationally, this means the film isn't just banned in Vietnam, but won't be seen anywhere. In April, the Nguyen brothers' project was blocked by Vietnamese censors due to the violence of the killing between gangsters in Chinatown. And today, the powers have spoken, ensuring the latest action flick of Johnny Tri Nguyen will go straight to the dusty warehouse of Banned Vietnamese Films. As the Central Board of Film Evaluation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism concluded: Cho Lon violated the Law of Cinema when showing scenes of...

And given that local clearance is required before Vietnamese producers are permitted to release a film internationally - breaking this rule can result in producers being blacklisted from the local industry - this means it won't be seen anywhere else, either. What happens next? If you’ve never seen writer/director Charlie Nguyen’s 2007 martial arts flick “The Rebel”, you really should give it a try. It’s a damn fine action movie starring Nguyen’s brother Johnny Nguyen, Veronica Ngo, and Dustin Nguyen (no relation to Charlie or Johnny). Dustin’s moved on to bigger and better things, directing and starring in the very cool looking “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”, while the Nguyen brothers have re-team on “Chinatown”, a gang film that, from the looks of the trailer, promises plenty of melodrama and action. As for the plot of “Chinatown”, the whole thing apparently concerns a gang war in Saigon’s Chinatown between two rival factions during a 24-hour period. The film’s Facebook Page probably has more on the plot, though of course it would help if you can read Vietnamese. Besides the Nguyen brothers, the film also stars Hoang Phuc Nguyen,...

"No stunt doubles, no computer images, no strings attached"This was the tagline that accompanied Tony Jaa's Ong Bak when it appeared on the world's radar back in 2003-2004. Since then Jaa has gone a wee bit crazy and has succumbed to wire-fu. In his stead we have fast rising Vietnamese star, Johnny Tri Nguyen, who has devastated screens with rip roaring performances in films like The Rebel and Clash. It looks like it may be time to add another name to the list of home-grown, all-natural martial arts stars, and it is India's Vidyut Jamwal.Jamwal is a relatively new face on the scene, making his first appearance on-screen in 2011's coming of age story, Stanley Ka Dabba. However, it was in John Abraham's Force, a...

Stepping it up a notch? The team behind Vietnamese action hits The Rebel and Clash are doing a whole lot more than that if the first images from the set of their upcoming Cho Lon - previously known as Chinatown - are to be believed. Johnny Tri Nguyen stars and handles the action choreography on this one with Charlie Nguyen directing and Jimmy Pham Nghiem producing. In the heart of Saigon, there's a place where promises are still written in blood.Cho Lon is a modern day gangster epic with 'epic' being the operative word ... the cast is huge and we can clearly expect some mass fighting sequences. And when your on set, behind the scenes shots look as astoundingly good as these ones do,...

In late November Twitch shared the first trailer for Vietnamese martial arts film Blood Letter (Thiên mệnh anh hùng). Adapted from a popular novel and directed by Victor Vu, we came away enormously impressed by that first footage. The art direction and design were simply gorgeous and what was shown of the action sequences - choreographed by The Rebel and Clash star Johnny Tri Nguyen - promised good things.Well, with the film gearing up for a rapidly approaching January release date for the Tet holidays, the full theatrical trailer has now arrived as well. This second effort gives a better look at both characters and action and while nobody will ever dispute that Vu loves his slow motion and smoothly sweeping camera arcs the...

The Film:
If you’ve ever seen The Rebel, a wonderful Vietnamese martial art period film, featuring the two stars of Clash; Johnny Nguyen and Thanh Van Ngo, you know or should anticipate these two being huge action stars. They have charisma, which doesn’t necessarily mean much in the world of action, but it’s a quality that you either have or you don’t, and since they do, it should make them bigger international stars. After Clash, you will know why, but re-watch The Rebel.
Clash begins much like Reservoir Dogs, where a team is built in order to do some thieving and get code names. It’s a nice homage or maybe a direct steal, but it doesn’t hurt the film. Once we get to the nitty gritty of the film – the game, the mess up, the action – Clash showcases itself. The plot is familiar, but...

Ever since Johnny Tri Nguyen accidentally leaked set photos from 7aam Arivu back a year ago, I've been psyched about this project. In the intervening year, I've learned a lot about its Tamil star, Suriya, and I'm learning a lot about the Tamil film industry as well. Mostly, though, I'm just psyched to see what sounds like an amazingly insane feature. In the time since I last posted promotional artwork, some possible new plot details have leaked which only intensify my interest, so I thought I'd share what I know with you to see if I'm crazy or if this sounds like a ton of fun! From what I've read the film focuses on Suriya's character, who doesn't yet have a name. A modern scientist, played...

Like it or not, we, the American people, have set a precedent for what makes a successful action movie – among them a ruthless but righteous protagonist, a villain with a taste for the theatrical, and of course chubby comic relief that gets plugged early on in the picture. Clash (Bay Rong) adheres to those principles as dogmatically as possible, and you know what? Despite a cautionary budget for making a full-fledged action picture, it works, at its best no worse than a low-rent Statham flick. The choreography is serviceable and occasionally impressive, and there’s plenty of plot to go around – only the third acts sags, and coming up on the heels of an exciting hour and twenty minutes, that’s a bargain.

While not as funny as Shaun of the Dead from writers/stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, nor as good as Superbad from director Greg Mottola, the film hits plenty of the right notes, where if you’re not laughing, your smiling. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy
Your Highness
Not quite Cheech & Chong in Medieval Times, and for some that was the deal killer. Yet Danny McBride gets off plenty of great lines and Natalie Portman is stupid fine, making for a decent effort, all things considered.
