Buenos Aires-based production, sales, and distribution outfit FilmSharks is hosting a pair of market screenings for David Bisbano’s animated feature “Dalia and the Red Book” at this year’s Marché du Film, and Variety has been given exclusive access to the first English-language trailer for the film.
“Dalia” will screen twice at this year’s market, on Thursday, May 16, at 2:00 p.m. in Palais E and on Friday, May 17, at 9:30 a.m. in Palais I.
With a unique aesthetic inspired by modern favorites such as “Corpse Bride” and “Paranorman,” the haunting kids and family feature tells the story of Dalia, the 12-year-old daughter of a recently deceased author. After her father’s death, Dalia takes on the job of finishing the man’s final book. To do so, she must become part of the story and come face-to-face with its characters, all fighting to be the story’s lead.

When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

As promised the onslaught of 2023 sports films marches, or in this case paddles, on. Hot on the heels of last week’s historical sports drama, comes this one based on a popular book from a few years ago. It’s not about wrestling, like Friday’s flick, but it is set in the past, though nearly fifty years before the Von Erichs. But there is an Olympic connection. This one concerns a larger team of young men defying the odds and overcoming hardship to go for the gold, rather than fame and fortune.

Out of all the successful shared universes to come about over the years, the "Karate Kid" franchise might be the most surprising. Also known as the Miyagi-Verse and named in honor of the martial arts maestro Mr. Miyagi, the property kicked off in 1984 with director John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid," a rousing sports drama cut from the same cloth as the filmmaker's Best Picture Oscar-winning "Rocky," albeit focused on martial arts rather than boxing. But besides establishing "Wax on, wax off" as a fixture of our pop cultural lexicon, the film also birthed two sequel films, a spinoff film, a reboot film, a live-action legacy sequel show, and even a short-lived, non-canonical '80s cartoon series.
For a long time, however, it was assumed the 2010 "Karate Kid" reboot and the 1984 original existed in different continuities. But no more! Just as the popular "Cobra Kai" series has seen Miyagai's...

Buenos Aires — Mr. Miyagi Films co-founder David Matamoros, firmly established as one of Barcelona’s leading specialists in international film finance, is now in post-production on his solo feature directorial debut, “Astronaut” (“Astronauta”) as Matamoros explores novel movie financing sources as a producer while building co-productions across Europe and Latin America.
Produced by Mr. Miyagi, Sombra Cine and Mother Superior and backed by Spain’s Icaa, Argentina’s Incaa, Uruguay’s Pua and Catalan pubcaster TV3, “Astronaut” which is set for delivery in early 2024, weighs in as a queer romcom which questions classic romcom narratives, asking in a bigger picture what now form bedrock affective family relationships in a modern age.

A global casting search is underway for the lead role in the forthcoming Karate Kid film — but the cast list has two essential roles already covered. Set for release in December 2024, the Sony Pictures film will find Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio returning to the franchise.
Macchio appeared in the original Karate Kid film, released in 1984, in the role of 15-year-old Daniel Larusso. He subsequently starred in the 1986 and 1989 sequels before reprising his role in the action comedy-drama series Cobra Kai in 2018.
Chan made his debut in the Karate Kid universe in the 2010 remake.

Here's a crossover you never knew you needed until now. Decades after the original "The Karate Kid" put star Ralph Macchio on the map and introduced audiences to Pat Morita's beloved Mr. Miyagi, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith took a crack at remaking the classic in 2010 -- though in a modernized setting and, notably, not portraying the exact same characters from the original. The franchise kept the nostalgia going with Netflix's popular "Cobra Kai" series, which reunited Macchio's Daniel Larusso with William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence. Now, not even the Cobra Kai dojo feels big enough to contain what's coming down the pipeline next.
Sony Pictures breathlessly announced that a new "Karate Kid" movie is officially in the works. But get this: the twist is that both Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have been cast and will be "reprising their characters" from the respective franchise films they previously starred in.

While Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have never before appeared together on screen, even as they’ve led films in different corners of the Karate Kid universe, they’re getting that opportunity now via a new feature installment in Sony’s hugely popular martial arts saga.
Macchio reprises his role as Daniel Larusso, the karate champion molded by Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi, with Chan as Mr. Han, the kung fu master who helped Jaden Smith fend off bullies in Sony’s 2010 Karate Kid remake. Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps, though sources say that it will mark a continuation of the mythology of the original franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) is directing the as-yet-untitled film from a script by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt producing. Pic’s slated for release by Sony Pictures on December 13, 2024.

When the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai Crane kicks its way onto Netflix, it could leave some questions unanswered in the interest of continuing the story in possible spin-offs. Speaking with Collider‘s Perri Nemiroff, Cobra Kai showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald said “closure” isn’t part of their grand plan for the Miyagi-verse. This statement is bold in an entertainment landscape where fans typically like things wrapped up with a big, red bow. However, some stories can’t end in a universe with limitless potential.
Hinting at Cobra Kai spin-offs, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald told Nemiroff, “We will never give actual closure when it comes to anything. We love working in the ‘Cobra Kai’ universe, so there’s always potential to revisit that world. We’re certainly thinking about other ideas within the Miyagi-verse, and it’s only a matter of time before...

Based on Ueda Akinari's tales “The House in the Thicket” and “The Lust of the White Serpent”, “Ugetsu” is set in Japan's civil war torn Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568–1600) and is probably Kenji Mizoguchi's most celebrated work, and a definitive part of the Golden Age of Japanese films. The movie was restored in 2016 by The Film Foundation and Kadokawa Corporation, in the version we watched in Thessaloniki.

His brother-in-law, Tobei, is eager to become a samurai, and during the same trip is utterly disgraced, eventually agreeing to help Genjuro with his pottery instead of chasing his crazy dreams. There was no guarantee that there would be an anime feature film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s hugely popular basketball manga series “Slam Dunk,” especially after its successful anime TV series. But not only did Toei Animation bring the beloved ’90s manga — about basketball as a psychological rite of passage through the overcoming of pain and hardship — to the big screen, but “The First Slam Dunk” (playing theatrically from GKids) is now the fifth highest-grossing anime of all time and the winner of the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animated Film.

Validated at Cannes by a big U.S. sale for Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams,” Catalan animation is on a roll – thanks to ambitious creatives muscular state funding, cutting edge talent and diverse stories that captivate global audiences.
“Catalonia’s long had a strong tradition of important animation production companies, which developed ambitious projects,” Edgar Garcia, general director of Catalan cultural company agency Icec, told Variety.
“Over the years, this resulted in the creation of smaller studios with highly qualified professionals on the creative and technical sides. Those studios and professionals are now working for productions all over the world,” he added.
Garcia points to a dedicated Icec fund for animation, features and series, with a €4.5 million ($4.9 million) budget for 2023. Of course, we believe this support scheme reflects the quality and creativity of Catalan animation, but has also helped nurture it. As the whole of the audiovisual production in Catalonia,...

Spain’s Revelations showcase has focused on shorts, not features, unveiling the huge breadth of animation talent and techniques in Spain.
Some shorts directors are already stars, such as Alberto Mielgo with the Oscar-winner “The Windshield Wiper.” Diego Porral, director of “Leopoldo From the Bar,” served as animation lead on “Love, Death + Robots” episode “Kill Team Kill.”
Standouts among new projects in Revelations included “Latente,” a Next Lab Generation winner from Carlos Zaragoza and Aurora Jiménez, and Martín Romero’s “To Bird or Not to Bird,” from Uniko and Abano Producións, which is a 2D short made largely in black and white featuring an angst-ridden clock cuckoo and other birds beset by environmental destruction.
Revelations climaxes with a special screening, the first in a cinema, of “Sith,” Rodrigo Blaas’ episode in Disney+’s “Star Wars: Visions.”
As for features, here are 10 toon titles to track. Further international co-productions – Mr.

"Miyagi. This is your stage." GKids Films has revealed a first look teaser for the US release of the Japanese anime comedy The First Slam Dunk, adapted from the manga by Takehiko Inoue. After opening in Japan late last year, it's set for US release this summer in theaters. The First Slam Dunk is an update based on the iconic comics and previous series, including Slam Dunk from the 90s and Slam Dunk: The Movie in 1994. Takehiko Inoue's basketball series had a huge impact when it was first published in the 90s, so much so that it created a huge surge in interest in the sport in Japan. The movie shifts the focus from Hanamichi to his teammate Ryota Miyagi, the point guard for the Shohoku high school basketball team, and his story and personal challenges. Hanamachi is also in the film, as are teammates Takenori Akagi, Hisashi Mitsui and Kaede Rukawa,...

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

“Cobra Kai never dies” – that may be true, but all good things must come to an end, including the hit Netflix show that announced the upcoming sixth season will be its last. The series that has quickly become a cult classic (just like the original film) centers around the premise of karate and the two different styles/variations of the martial art that Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) teach to their students. Despite airing more than thirty years after the original movie premiered, Cobra Kai has risen to be one of Netflix’s top shows of all time and will be sorely missed by it’s beloved fans.
Despite the inevitable disappointment from fans who would love to see the series continue on, audiences can rest assured knowing that the sixth and final season will be bigger and better than all the others, as promised by the shows creators.
