Joanna Werner.
When Joanna Werner did a media course at Rmit she aimed to be journalist but her career took a different path as the head of Werner Film Productions.
So when Michael Lucas, whom she had met in a writers’ room five years ago, pitched her his concept of a drama set in TV newsroom, she jumped at the idea.
After a lengthy development process the ABC commissioned The Newsreader, which follows the unlikely bond between a young TV reporter and a ‘difficult’ female newsreader.
Emma Freeman will direct the six-part series scripted by Lucas (who co-created Five Bedrooms with Christine Bartlett), Jonathan Gavin, Niki Aken and Kim Ho, which is now in pre-production in Melbourne, supported by Screen Australia and Film Victoria.
“Michael’s pitch for The Newsreader was so strong and I knew it would be a fabulously original series. Development and financing can be a tough...

Ben Lawrence took home the main prize – Best Direction in a Feature Film (Budget $1M+) – at last night’s Australian Directors’ Guild (Adg) Awards, for his debut narrative feature Hearts and Bones.
Held virtually and hosted by Greta Lee Jackson and Nina Oyama, this year’s Adg Awards also saw female directors take home 10 of the 19 prizes – marking the first time ever that women have made up more than 50 per cent of winners.
Among them were Josephine Mackerras, who took home Best Direction of A Feature Film (Budget under $1M) for the French-language Alice; Maya Newell whose In My Blood It Runs saw her win Best Direction of a Documentary Feature, and Emma Freeman, who won Best Direction of a TV or SVOD Mini-Series for Stateless: Episode 3.

Leanne Tonkes and Emma Freeman.
Growing up in a remote town in South Australia in the 1950s, Emma Freeman’s mother often heard the circus troupe which camped in fields nearby.
Fascinated by this unusual group of people, like many young girls she contemplated running away and joining the circus, but did not do so.
That became the inspiration for The Circus, a passion project for writer-director Freeman, which she is developing with her long-time collaborator, producer Leanne Tonkes.
It’s among six Australian projects selected for Attagirl, the feature film development lab for female and non-binary creative teams.
Set in rural 1950s Australia, the narrative follows a beautiful, feisty circus performer who meets a lonely and determined female farmer, forcing them to decide to conform or follow their hearts.
“The story isn’t about a girl running away but more about two people from very different backgrounds finding each...

Netflix’s new acquisition “Stateless” gets to its subject only circuitously. We meet Sofie (Yvonne Strahovski) as she’s running through the Australian desert trying to escape from something, then zoom back in time to see her as a polished flight attendant whose attempts at escape are somewhat less literal. Sofie, before her life takes a strange turn, is a devotee of a dance-based cult led by Cate Blanchett (a series co-creator) and Dominic West, both operating at the height of their charisma; when she’s turned away from the cult after having torched her family life and career, she ends up in immigration detention even despite being an Australian citizen.
There’s a touch of “Orange Is the New Black” at work here: Strahovski’s seemingly out-of-place blonde opens up the story for a subset of the audience less inclined to see her fellow prisoners as real people with struggles,...

Cate Blanchett’s topical immigration-focused series “Stateless” is nearing release and Netflix has debuted the trailer for the upcoming limited series.
Here’s the series’ synopsis, per Netflix: “Stateless” is a powerful and timely series about four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert — an airline hostess (Yvonne Strahovski) on the run from a dangerous cult, an Afghan refugee (Fayssal Bazzi) and his family fleeing persecution, a young father (Jai Courtney) escaping a dead-end job, and a bureaucrat (Asher Keddie) running out of time to contain a national scandal.
Though the series, which premieres on Netflix on July 8, has yet to land in America, has already aired on Australian public broadcaster ABC in March. Netflix acquired the global rights to the series in February. The show was seven years in the making for Blanchett, who also serves as an ambassador for...

(L-r) Yvonne Strahovski, Cate Blanchett and Emma Freeman on the ‘Stateless’ set.
The suspension and postponement of numerous screen productions has disrupted directors as much as any industry cohort – but many continue to develop film and TV projects.
“I’m using my downtime to develop some feature projects, in particular The Circus written by Alice Bell, and writing my first feature screenplay,” says Emma Freeman, who co-directed Stateless and was working with Tony Ayres on Netflix’s Clickbait until production halted.
To be produced by Leanne Tonkes, The Circus follows a circus troupe that is stranded by a horrific roadside accident in the middle of drought-stricken farmlands. As the troupe becomes more desperate, their star trapeze artist falls in love with a farmer and must choose between the life she’s always known and the life that could be if she stayed.

The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of four screen industry events, halted production on Netflix’s Clickbait and two major movies and postponed shooting of two TV reality shows.
Meaa members were informed today by the Clickbait producers there would be a two week hiatus due to general health concerns, nothing specific as no one associated with the production has contracted the virus.
Matchbox Pictures and Tony Ayres Productions told the union they will continue to closely monitor the situation and then reappraise to ensure the safety of cast and crew.
Ayres and Christian White co-created the Us-set, eight-episode thriller which began shooting in Melbourne in November, directed by Brad Anderson, Emma Freeman, Ben Young and Laura Belsey. Filming was due to wrap in April.
Filming of Fremantle/Seven Network’s Australia’s Got Talent and ITV Studios Australia’s/Nine Network’s The Voice has been postponed.

Netflix has swooped in and taken global rights outside Australia to the Cate Blanchett-starring and exec-produced refugee drama series “Stateless,” following its world premiere in Berlin this week.
Australian public broadcaster ABC, which commissioned the six-part series, will air “Stateless” on March 1, with the streaming giant going out later this year. It is believed the show was a straight acquisition for the platform. “Stateless” is produced by Matchbox Pictures along with Blanchett and Andrew Upton’s production banner Dirty Films.
A timely story five years in the making, the series follows four people caught up in an immigration system that severely impacts their lives, with each character confronting issues around protection and border control in a different way. (L-r) Dop Ben Nott, Kriv Stenders and Jamie Leslie.
Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to film and TV first assistant director Jamie Leslie, who died on Friday from cancer. He was 62.
His final film in a distinguished 38-year career was Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.
“Not only was he an industry legend but he was an incredible mentor for me and a huge reason that film came to be,” Stenders says.
“Jamie came on early in pre-production when the film was teetering on the edge of an abyss. We weren’t bonded, we lost $2 million two weeks before shooting, we had no tanks, choppers or guns and we were running on fumes longer than I ever thought was humanly possible.
“But never once did he waver. He was my rock and every hour, every day we just worked the problem, until there was the next one.

When Netflix announced it had commissioned Clickbait last year, director Matt Richards began lobbying co-creator Tony Ayres, Matchbox Pictures and Film Victoria to seek a director’s attachment.
That persistence paid off and the filmmaker started work on the Melbourne-based production two weeks ago, shadowing Ben Young, who is directing two episodes of the eight-part, Us-set thriller.
Richards will work on the show on-and-off until early April, fitting around his day job as a moving image designer at the National Gallery of Victoria.
“I really wanted the opportunity to work on a high stakes adult drama and pushed hard to get the attachment,â€. says Richards, who had an attachment on the ABC’s children’s series Tomorrow, When the War Began and has directed the short dramas First Contact, Rabbit and the Screen Australia Hot Shots-funded The Disappearance of Willie Bingham.
“Ben and the Clickbait team have been incredibly open and welcoming.

‘Stateless.’
The ABC’s 2020 programming slate unveiled today is packed with new documentaries and factual series – but there is a distinct air of déjà vu in the categories of drama and comedy.
No new commissions were announced in either genre, but that does not necessarily mean there will be fewer local dramas or comedies on screen next year, despite budget cutbacks.
Referring to the $84 million funding reduction over three years on top of cuts of $50 million a year since 2014, Michael Carrington, ABC director, entertainment and specialist, tells If: “To date, ABC management has found ongoing savings that will total about $17 million a year from next year.
“We’ve looked carefully at non-content related initiatives such as renegotiating third-party contracts. Management will also undertake reviews of our property portfolio and our acquisitions expenditure to assess where other savings may be made.
“It’s good progress but more needs to be done to meet our savings target.

Tony Ayres and Andrea Denholm.
Friends for years, Tony Ayres and Andrea Denholm had long wanted to work together but did not have the opportunity – until now.
Denholm is joining Tony Ayres Productions (Tap) next week as head of development after finishing up tomorrow as a producer/partner at Princess Pictures.
Ayres tells If: “I was looking for a head of development and asked Andrea for her advice. Her advice was ‘hire me,’ which was music to my ears. She is great with talent and is one of the most impressive creative producers in the country. We have similar views on the shows we want to make.”
After a happy 10 years at Princess Pictures with the company’s founder Laura Waters, Denholm was up for a new challenge. “Tony is a superstar and a beautiful human being,” she says.
“The content he creates and champions reflects his brilliant imagination, curiosity,...
