Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s batch of Time Bandits will make their debut on Wednesday, July 24 on Apple TV+.
Created by Waititi, Clement and Iain Morris, the reimagining of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 cult fantasy film is officially described as a “comedic journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an eleven-year-old history nerd” (played by relative newcomer Kal-El Tuck). “Together, they set out on a thrilling quest to save the boy’s parents — and the world.”

The name Harry Hole may sound like a joke to a lot of English speakers, but Norwegian author Jo Nesbø has managed to build a bestselling series of crime novels around the character – whose last name is meant to be pronounced as “Hoo-leh.” There have been thirteen books in the Harry Hole series to date, with the seventh one having previously been brought to the screen as the 2017 film The Snowman… which, despite having Tomas Alfredson at the helm, Martin Scorsese on board as a producer, and a strong cast that included Michael Fassbender as Hole, did not turn out well. (You can read our 3/10 review Here.) Now Nesbø is seeking redemption for his character by teaming with Working Title and the Netflix streaming service for a series called Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole, which is set to star Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) as Hole. Deadline has unveiled an image of Santelmann in character,...

Netflix and Working Title have found their Harry Hole.
German-Norwegian actor Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) will play the lead in the Jo Nesbø adaptation, which will be officially titled Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole.
Santelmann is joined by Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon, The Suicide Squad) playing Tom Waaler and Pia Tjelta (Made in Oslo, State of Happiness) as Rakel Fauke. The casting has been announced in the past few minutes at the iconic restaurant Schrøder in Oslo, Norway, which also serves as Harry Hole’s ‘second home’ in the novels.
Created by the much-loved Scandi crime fiction author, Nesbø’s Harry Hole is a whodunnit serial killer mystery led by the famed anti-hero. Underneath the surface, it is a nuanced character drama about two police officers – and supposed colleagues – operating on opposite sides of the law. Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long time adversary and corrupt detective Tom Waaler.

Ever since he was forced to flee his Moscow home in 2022 after rousing suspicion within Russia’s government for speaking out about his opposition to the war in Ukraine, Kyiv-born producer Alexander Rodnyansky feels more compelled than ever to help bring to screen stories that are “rooted in truth.”
Now living in between Los Angeles, Italy and Ukraine, the Oscar-nominated producer has been concentrating his efforts on “building a hub” of European and international talent and uniting them with Hollywood through his banner Ar Content.

‘Waller’ was confirmed for development in 2022 as a spinoff of ‘Peacemaker’, featuring Viola Davis reprising her role as the titular character. Recent confirmations indicate that the show will deviate from the comedy-oriented style of ‘Peacemaker’, reflecting Waller’s serious demeanor.
Initially slated for a 2024 release, James Gunn’s current focus on other Dcu projects suggests a potential delay, with the best-case scenario being a 2025 release. However, some sources still mention a 2024 release date.
In light of the recent announcements about ‘Peacemaker’ season 2, fans queried Gunn on social media about the timeline of the upcoming show. Gunn, always helpful, clarified that it would take place after the events of the second season of ‘Peacemaker’.
Recently, Gunn sparked controversy by confirming that certain Dceu events will be considered canon within the Dcu.
Frank Grillo was cast as Rick Flag Sr. in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, having already been confirmed to voice the character for the animated show.

‘Waller’ was confirmed to be in development back in 2022 as a spinoff of ‘Peacemaker’, with Viola Davis reprising her role as the titular character, recently it’s been confirmed that the show will not be comedy-oriented as ‘Peacemaker’ as Waller is much more serious character, and the show will try to reflect that tone.
The show was supposed to be released in 2024, but the fact that Gunn is now focusing on the rest of the Dcu projects, the best-case scenario is that the show gets released in 2025, even though the 2024 release date is still present in some sources.

James Gunn has a lot planned for the DC Universe, and a significant weight of it seems to lie in his upcoming animated series, Creature Commandos. There has been a lot of conversation around this seemingly minuscule series, which also happens to be setting up some of the most significant storylines in DC’s near future.
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos
One of the most unfortunate deaths in recent years has to have been that of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag. It would seem that this painful wound is being ripped open again, as Flag’s father, Rick Flag Sr., is making his way into the franchise.
While many would be excited solely based on this news, it would seem that the character is entering the universe with one goal; revenge. Could Amanda Waller help Flag Sr. kill his son’s killer?

Marvel hasn't been having the best time of late and the shaky attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle that was "Thor: Love and Thunder" is a good example. Whereas its predecessor, "Thor: Ragnarok," saw star Chris Hemsworth leaning into his comedic sensibilities to great effect, even Hemsworth himself agreed that "Love and Thunder" was just too silly. But when the God of Thunder made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut all the way back in 2011, the opposite was true.
Whereas "Iron Man," the film that changed Hollywood forever by kicking off the massively popular interconnected universe, was led by Robert Downey Jr. and his magnetic charisma, 2011's "Thor" was a darker affair that embraced the character's origins and delivered what was essentially a fantasy adventure with relative unknowns in the lead roles of Thor and Loki. In the late-aughts, Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston did not enjoy the superstar status they do today,...

In their announcement of the rebooted Dcu, Gunn, and Safran emphasized that nearly nothing from the old Dceu would carry over into the new cinematic universe.
The exceptions were ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 and the character Blue Beetle, with Gunn assuring fans of a seamless transition into the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ without confusion.
The most recent announcement regarding the show complicates matters, as it appears that another project, ‘The Suicide Squad,’ is now considered canon to the Dcu. Frank Grillo has been cast as Rick Flag Sr. in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, having already been confirmed to voice the character for the animated show. This aligns with Gunn’s earlier statement about wanting voice actors to also portray their characters in live-action projects within the Dcu.
Following the announcement, it was confirmed that Flag Sr. will have unresolved issues with Peacemaker, stemming from Peacemaker’s role in the death of Flag Jr. in ‘The Suicide Squad.

With the announcement of Gunns & Safran’s newly rebooted Dcu, James Gunn made it very clear that almost nothing from the old Dceu won’t be canon to the new cinematic universe.
The only exceptions were ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 and Blue Beetle (the character not the story), and Gunn promised to transition in the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ as smoothly as possible and not confusing to the fans.
Now the latest announcement related to the show makes that a bit impossible since it seems that yet another project is canon to the Dcu – ‘The Suicide Squad.’

One need only look at James Gunn to realize that not all good things in life come in the form of blessings and opportunities. Some of them appear in a red, white, and blue costumed dysfunctional superhero who vows to bring peace to the world, even if he has to kill every man, woman, and child for it. John Cena’s iconic Peacemaker returns to Dcu to get what he wants, even with James Gunn standing in his way.

Marvel actor and all-around badass Frank Grillo is trading his crossbones for stars and stripes after joining the cast of Peacemaker Season 2 for DC. Grillo is lacing up his boots to play Rick Flag Sr. for the sophomore season of James Gunn’s superhero series, starring John Cena as Christopher “Chris” Smith, aka Peacemaker. Rick Flag Sr. is the father of Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Cena’s Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad, leading me to think it’s time for revenge.
Before Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. appears in Peacemaker Season 2, he’ll debut in animated form in the upcoming Max series Creature Commandos. The monster-centric animated series revolves around a black ops team working for Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller.

Frank Grillo was sorely underutilised in the MCU. After first playing Brock Rumlow for a memorable supporting turn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he returned as Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War...and immediately died.
The actor got a cameo in Avengers: Endgame and has lent his voice to What If...?, but it's looking like he'll have much more to do in the Dcu.
After being cast as Rick Flag Sr. in DC Studios' animated Creature Commandos, it's been confirmed today that Grillo will make the leap to live-action and reprise the role in Peacemaker season 2.
"Pleased to announce the great [Frank Grillo] will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr - the role he’ll first play in animated form in 'Creature Commando's - throughout Season 2 of 'Peacemaker,'" DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn said on Instagram. "Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of.

More than two years after "Peacemaker" season 1 aired its finale, the second season of the DC series is finally coming together. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has revealed an intriguing bit of casting for the show as production gets going, with Frank Grillo returning to the DC Universe as Rick Flag Sr. We say "returning" because Grillo is already playing the part in the upcoming animated TV series "Creature Commandoes." So yes, he will be making the jump from animation to live-action. This brings a plan Gunn has had in place since the beginning of this DC reboot full circle.

Some very good news over the long-distance relay for fans of alt-history sci-fi series For All Mankind. Apple TV+ has decided to not only renew the main show for a fifth season, but also commission a new spin-off sibling, Star City, which will explore the space race story from the Russian side of events.
Season Four of For All Mankind reached 2003, and the well-established Mars base on Happy Valley became a hotbed of blue-collar dissent and authority crackdowns. And asteroid mining became a hot-button issues, with disagreements over where this rich new source of minerals and metals should be positioned to maximize their use.
The fifth season will see another time jump, meaning we're likely to say goodbye to veteran characters such as those played by Joel Kinnaman and Krys Marshall.
Yet the new spin-off offers the chance to see the likes of NASA-chief-turned-defector Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) again...

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of For All Mankind,” Wolpert and Nedivi said in a statement.

Joel Kinnaman’s 2023 action thriller Silent Night was a mixed bag from the very beginning. The John Woo directorial features no spoken language and is very different from any action movies you’ve watched. The characters in the movie have no dialogue, so when the casting was happening, it is no surprise that people were apprehensive.

The Suicide Squad actor, who is the lead protagonist of the story, plays a grieving father who saw his son getting killed in the crossfire of a gang war. His performance, one of the positives about the movie, came from the sheer physicality he brought to the role.

True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

As far as late ‘80s and early ‘90s sci-fi goes, it’s tough to top RoboCop and Total Recall, two wildly astute takes on what the current climate was and what we could expect in the future from major corporations and technology. Not surprisingly, studios felt the need to give “updates” to both in the 21st century. For the most part, both failed. But that’s not just us saying so, as original RoboCop and Total Recall director Paul Verhoeven has chimed in with his takes on both.
Regarding Robocop, Verhoeven took issue with the 2014 movie, which starred Joel Kinnaman – who himself knew his version was far removed from the 1987 original – over its lack of subtleties and nuances, in addition to how the filmmakers tried to develop the central character. “The problem there, I felt, was that he was really aware that he lost all his legs and arms. "For All Mankind" has become not only one of the best sci-fi shows around right now, but one of the best ever. Ronald D. Moore, the mind behind the reboot of "Battlestar Galactica," has made a show that bridges the gap between our reality and far-future shows like "Star Trek." This alternate timeline sci-fi drama not only excels at delivering speculative fiction, but also at delivering intimate drama.
What started as a relatively simple drama about an alternate reality where Russia got to the moon first has now become one of the most optimistic, thrilling shows on TV, one that has reached the cosmos to deliver shoot-outs on the moon, labor strikes on Mars, and even an asteroid heist.
The key to the show's narrative success lies in its use of time. Time is the enemy of people, but it is the greatest asset of "For All Mankind." By skipping...

Joel Kinnaman had an "element of fear" for his role in 'Silent Night'.The 44-year-old actor plays grieving father Brian Godlock – who seeks revenge on a gang who killed his son and removed his own ability to speak in a drive-by shooting on Christmas Eve – in John Woo's movie and knew the risks of taking on a part without dialogue. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joel said: "I would say the (excitement-fear) ratio was something like 80:20. If you get it wrong, it'd be a failed attempt to do a movie with no dialogue, and that just sounds like a boring travesty."But it's very cool to get to a cinematic experiment, something that is artistically courageous. That's what you dream of doing, and it happened to be with a legendary filmmaker."So I'll say 80:20, but I have to have some amount of fear in everything...

On paper, the wordless challenge of John Woo’s Silent Night would seem intimidating to most actors, but Joel Kinnaman has always tried to do more with less. The Swedish actor operates with the mindset that the camera can pick up one’s thoughts, and so he tries to trim his lines anytime an opportunity and agreement presents itself. Woo’s first American film in 20 years would prove to be the most extreme version of this exercise, as Kinnaman plays Brian Godlock, a grieving father who stops at nothing to take down the gang that is responsible for killing his young son and taking away his own ability to speak.
Considering the risky premise, Kinnaman felt just enough trepidation to take on the project that has now been received at both ends of the critical spectrum. (The Hollywood Reporter called it “gripping.”)
“If you get it wrong, it can really turn into dog shit.

As T.E. Lawrence exclaims in "Lawrence of Arabia": "Big things have small beginnings." That axiom holds generally true of most things in life, of course, yet it curiously applies to a great number of films released in 2023.
Over the last decade and change, we've been privy to many "big things" in American cinema; such trends as the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its brethren have ensured that world-ending stakes (or larger) became the order of the day on screen, and such stakes were allowed to rise given their films' not-so-humble beginnings (for example: Tony Stark in "Iron Man" begins as a billionaire playboy military weapons manufacturer).
While there has never been a complete end to a more modest style of storytelling focused on average, everyday characters, the prevalence of the superhero film and the need for Hollywood to get butts in seats as screens dwindle meant that...

It’s been 20 years since John Woo last worked on a big Hollywood production (2003’s “Paycheck“). But this year, the legendary filmmaker returned with a proverbial (and quite literal) bang with “Silent Night,” which combines Woo’s love of a revenge story, gratuitous action and over-the-top violence and the beautiful holiday of Christmas.

Santa Claus won’t be the only mythical figure sliding down chimneys this holiday season! John Woo is getting in on the home invasion action now that Lionsgate is bringing Silent Night to PVOD on December 19. Please buy extra milk and cookies this year. I hear Woo likes Macaroons and Snickerdoodles. While that’s probably inaccurate, he strikes me as a man of taste. It’s been 20 years since Woo’s last American movie, so this is a big deal.
“From legendary director John Woo and the producer of John Wick comes the gritty revenge tale of a tormented father (Joel Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve,” reads the official synopsis. “While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, Kinnaman makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.
