Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

Smriti Mundhra cannot be pigeonholed into one oeuvre. The creator of Netflix’s popular “Indian Matchmaking,” which released its second season recently, directed two episodes of Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever” for the same streamer, and a segment of Brie Larson’s upcoming Disney+ docuseries “Growing Up.” Her “Shelter” doc short on homelessness is nominated for a news and documentary Emmy, as part of HBO Max series “Through Our Eyes.”
Mundhra, whose father, Jagmohan, was also a filmmaker and ran the Culver City theater Meralta, took that name for her production company. “What I love about making films and this work is that it puts a human face on these kinds of big problems.”
Mundhra says viewers are drawn to “Indian Matchmaking” because it engages with topics that we don’t talk about a lot. “Some of it is cringey,” she says. “Some of the things we do...

ReviewWith a 0 success rate, at least with on-screen couples, matchmaker Sima from Mumbai holds a powerful place in desi pop culture. The second season brings oodles of that signature cringe-watch quotient, but nothing more.Poorva JoshiSima Taparia in Indian Matchmaking. Credit: YouTube/ Netflix India“Priyanka and Nick are not a good match, sorry to tell that [sic],” says matchmaker Sima from Mumbai, in season 2 of the Netflix show Indian Matchmaking. “It’s okay for the man to be seven years older, but for the girl to be that much older… I don’t think it’s a good match.” She is talking in the context of a female client, who recently had a dalliance with a man seven years her junior. Nobody should tell Sima about Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Don’t even mention Sushmita Sen’s dating history. But Shahid Kapoor, his wife Mira and their 14-year age difference?...

One of those clients is Aparna Shewakramani who, along with season one's Pradhyuman Maloo, have returned with their eyes set on love again. Sima, however, says that her clients have become very particular about what they're looking for. "When...

Season two of "Indian Matchmaking" hasn't even hit Netflix yet, but the streamer has already renewed the show for a third installment. On March 24, Netflix announced the news while unveiling its most inclusive dating-show lineup yet. No other details regarding season three were revealed, but we do know that season two will debut later this year.
"Indian Matchmaking" first premiered in 2020. The eight-episode first season stretched across both the US and India, and followed famed matchmaker Sima Taparia as she paired her single clients based on their career ambitions, personality, astrological compatibility, and family dynamics. However, the show has faced criticism for perpetuating damaging ideas around colorism and caste.
Following the show's Emmy nomination, series creator Smriti Mundhra addressed the criticism in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I can't claim to know exactly why we were nominated and what forces were at play to get us that nomination," Mundhra explained.

Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia, the disarming central figure at the heart of Netflix’s Emmy-nominated unstructured reality series “Indian Matchmaking,” doesn’t seem like she could change your entire life in one swoop. But as the eight-episode series depicts, she’s essentially the Mary Poppins of Indian courtship, only her endless bag of tricks includes preference charts, intuition and a whole lot of patience.
“I met Sima for personal reasons,” executive producer Smriti Mundhra says. “She was actually my matchmaker. When I was in my 20s, there was a lot of anxiety in my family about when I was going to get married. When I first met her, I think at that time I was too stubborn regarding the process, but I was just so captivated by her as a personality that I knew she would be a great subject for a TV show.”

“Reality TV is a powerful genre. It has the ability to make you invested in who is going to win the big competition or find true love (or at least a good showmance). It also has the ability to bring people together from all walks of life,” Netflix’s vice president of unscripted and documentary series, Brandon Riegg, said in a blog post published Monday.

“There hasn’t really been a show like this, particularly involving South Asian or Indian culture, so it was difficult,” Indian Matchmaking creator/executive producer Smriti Mundhra said during Deadline’s Contender Television: Documentary + Unscripted award-season event about the daring Netflix series.
“You know, the first hurdle we had to cross was to explain to people what we were doing,” Mundhra added of the show fronted by Mumbai’s self-described “top matchmaker” Sima Taparia. “Our show wasn’t an independent documentary like the kind I had made before, and it wasn’t The Bachelor or Big Brother. It was something in between.”
That’s putting it mildly. Launching on the streamer on July 16, Indian Matchmaking provided a glimpse inside a very different approach to marriage than most of us in the West are familiar with. Shifting between the sub-continent and America, the eight-episode first season focused on eight participants and...

Tollywood The romance between a denim-clad ‘America abbayi’, and an ‘Andhra ammayi’ in a half-saree who is equal parts upbeat, sweet and naive, is a recurring trope in Tollywood.Jahnavi ReddyIn the recently viral reality show Indian Matchmaking, Sima Taparia, the marriage consultant, is shown shuttling between the US and India to manage her clients in the respective countries. While Sima Aunty struggled to successfully match Nri and local Indian youngsters living in the same country, ‘matchmakers’ or marriage brokers in the Telugu states have been efficiently matching thousands of women in the Telugu states with Nri grooms from within their communities for decades now. Telugu is reportedly among the fastest growing languages in the US, and most people from upper and dominant castes have relatives settled in the US, or have heard of a relative looking for an ‘America sambandham’ (finding a groom settled in the US). Of course...

ControversyRicha Chadha posted a photo of matrimonials that appear in the newspapers to prove her point.Tnm StaffRicha Chadha/InstagramActor Kangana Ranaut recently joined Twitter, and has stirred many debates. She recently drew flak for saying that the caste system has been “rejected by modern Indians” and spoke against reservation. The actor also wrote, "Especially in professions like doctors, engineers, pilots, most deserving people suffer reservations, we as a nation suffer mediocrity and brilliance finds a reluctant escape to the United States… Shame." Many people however pointed out how she was wrong and caste very much exists and continues to oppress, and that affirmative action was the best recourse. Masaan actor Richa Chadha too pointed out the same, and posted a photo of Sunday matrimonial ad from a newspaper, which made it apparent that caste continues to remain a factor in people looking to find a match, and to include someone in their families.

Netflix's Indian Matchmaking was a trip around the world, following a group of eligible singles embarking on a journey to the mandap (a traditional Indian wedding alter) with the help of top Indian Matchmaker Sima Taparia. This compelling concept redefined the typical dating reality show by inadvertently shedding light on some of the realities and societal pressures that come with South Asian arranged marriages and traditional matchmaking in a modern world. Though the series wrapped, Sima's work is never over. "Business is booming!" she told NBC Asian America. "With or without pandemic, people are still searching for life partners and I'm working hard for my...

The second I saw Netflix's Indian Matchmaking come up on my TV's home screen, I excitedly texted a bunch of my Desi friends to see if they'd heard anything about it. This past year was a big one for the Indian community, with Mindy Kaling's Never Have I Ever resonating with so many people. I'm not saying that there weren't any stereotypes that caught me off guard on the show (like some of the character's fake accents or the opening scene where Devi's praying over a book for good grades), but there were some moments that really hit home for me in the coming-of-age comedy.
While I was excited to see something related to the Indian culture get the spotlight yet again, it sort of felt like a personal secret was about to be exposed to the world. I was a little worried how Indians would be portrayed,...

We all deserve happiness, and for many, finding a romantic "happily ever after" is part of that dream. That desire is what makes checking horoscopes a harmless guilty pleasure, romantic comedies a popular genre, and romance novels a summer staple. And many people of Indian ancestry, including me, were truly excited to see cultural representation via Netflix's Indian Matchmaking, because Indian girls dream about their own weddings, too.
Set partially in India and partially in the United States, this eight-episode reality series is centered around "motivated" matchmaker Sima Taparia, whose self-proclaimed destiny is to find suitable matches for eligible young Indians. As a concept, Indian Matchmaking idealizes an important life event, marriage, promising that familial approval of a spouse will provide lifelong happiness. There’s a degree of irony in the fact that Netflix unscripted dating show “Indian Matchmaking,” the most distinctly Indian content to originate from a platform aggressively expanding operations in India, was commissioned out of Los Angeles, rather than Mumbai.
Netflix launched in India in 2016, but it took a while to warm up to homegrown commissions in a market that thrives on local fare. It didn’t help optics that content execs Swati Shetty and Simran Sethi opted to resign rather than be based in Mumbai. They were replaced eventually by Monica Shergill in 2019, who joined existing director of originals Srishti Behl Arya. Amid all the restructuring, the streamer’s first Indian commission, 2018’s “Sacred Games,” a hit for the service, was commissioned by Erik Barmack out of the U.S.

The latest Netflix obsession is “Indian Matchmaking,” centering on Sima Taparia, a Mumbai woman who helps Indian singles find potential spouses, with plenty of input from their extended families.
The internet is abuzz over the show’s subjects including opinionated Houston attorney Aparna, lovable Austin nerd Vyasar and Mumbai businessman Akshay, who wants to find a wife just like his mom.
But personalities aside, the reality series is a fascinating glimpse into the Indian cultural traditions surrounding finding a mate and planning a wedding. Viewers who aren’t familiar with the customs might wonder, “Why don’t they just try Tinder?” or “Why do they bring in an astrologer?”
Here are some of the questions that might come up for those who are new to Indian culture.
Why does the matchmaker keep mentioning that potential matches are fair-skinned? Is that acceptable?
Until recently, a face cream called Fair and Lovely...
