Supermodel Tatjana Patitz died Wednesday at 56 from metastatic breast cancer.
Beginning in the 80s, the supermodel appeared on covers for Vogue and countless other fashion magazines.
Atypical of many models of her time, Patitz lived a quiet life in nature away from the public eye.
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died In 2022
Anna Wintour, Vogue‘s Global Editorial Director, said, “Tatjana was always the European symbol of chic, like Romy Schneider-meets-Monica Vitti. She was far less visible than her peers — more mysterious, more grown-up, more unattainable — and that had its own appeal.”
Patitz was born in Hamburg, Germany but raised in Sweden. Her career started when she was selected in 1983 as a finalist of the “Elite Model Look” competition. The award was a trip to Paris and a limited-time contract.
However, she didn’t rise to fame until the late 80s when she began modeling for photographer Peter Lindbergh.

Supermodel Tatjana Patitz, best known for her appearance in George Michael’s video for his monster hit “Freedom ’90,” has died at age 56. She died on Jan. 11 of breast cancer, her agent confirmed.
The German-born Patitz was considered one of the original supermodels. She entered her first modeling contest at age 17 in Stockholm, taking third place. But a session with fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh that followed launched the main part of her career.
Singer George Michael saw her in British Vogue in 1990, and subsequently cast her for his “Freedom ’90” music video alongside Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista.
“I was in my own zone,” she said of filming the “Freedom ’90” video, which didn’t see her even meet Michael. “I had to kind of slide up and down the wall for part of the day. The feel of the set was so run-down, this big, loft kind of vibe.

A hypnotic TV commercial for a local department store beckons — summons, really — shoppers for what amounts to a culturally mandatory annual winter sales event. It’s an ad that’s not unlike the ones for Silver Shamrock in “Halloween III: Season of The Witch,” and in “In Fabric,” it succeeds in the same way, bringing in unhappy bank employee Sheila (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) to look for a first-date dress.
She finds the Ambassadorial Function Dress, color: Artery Red. It’s an alluring garment summed up in the store’s catalog with hyperbolic copy like “body sensual, captivating, candlelight glances, canapé conversations.” Not really Sheila’s size, it somehow fits her perfectly. And though she protests that she normally wouldn’t wear something so bold, the commandingly seductive saleswoman, Miss Luckmoore, doubles down: “Daring eclipses the dark circumference of caution.” There’s really no arguing with that.
Naturally, the dress is haunted.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Meghan Markle is the guest editor of British Vogue's esteemed September issue. The Duchess of Sussex doesn't appear on the cover herself; instead, she chose to feature the 15 women who have inspired her most. One of those women is Salma Hayek, who this week has opened up about the moment the Duchess asked her to appear on the cover, revealing more about the secrecy surrounding the project.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Salma revealed that she thought the phone call from British Vogue Editor in Chief Edward Enninful was an elaborate joke cooked up by Enninful and their mutual friend Naomi Campbell. "I was in the car and he said, 'Listen, I'm going to put somebody on the phone. Are you in the car with people?'", she said. "But then it took a while for the other person to get on the phone.
