While Lgbtq rights have been ushered to the sidelines under the Trump administration, Ryan Murphy said he aims to do his part for the Lgbtq community with his new FX series “Pose.”
“Our community is under such attack from this administration,” Murphy said at the New York premiere on Thursday. “I wanted to put something optimistic and uplifting out there.”
Trump had made several efforts to roll back gay and transgender protections since assuming office, including his signed ban for transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military.
Murphy continued, “I just want (viewers) to be entertained and enlightened. I want them to love these characters and realize that all our struggles are the same. We all have dreams and we all want to be loved.”
“He is as brazen as he is gay,” producer Janet Mock said of Murphy on the carpet. “He uses that in his storytelling.

I first met Ryan Murphy on location in Hollywood in July. The set was a nightclub, filled with background actors staged as glistening go-go dancers, shirtless revelers, and twirling drag queens. They were all basking under the glow of a spinning disco ball — a fitting setting for my first Hollywood job interview.
I was flown in from New York City to meet with television’s most prolific showrunner, who was directing the pilot of “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” The day’s shoot concentrated on reconstructing a moment when the late Italian designer meets the man who will ultimately end his life. Our own meet-cute began (less tragically) between takes. Murphy greeted me with a double from Starbucks in one hand and his other extended. “I am working on a new show which will tell the story of 1980s New York City through characters in two worlds...

You better work to keep up with the first official trailer for Ryan Murphy’s new FX series “Pose.” And the voguing. Oh, the voguing.
Though the dance musical already gave us a taste of what’s to come when it dropped a teaser along with its release date announcement last month, this clip is five times as glamorous. It looks like someone took the first video and dumped a canister of glitter on it and gave it a tiara.
“Focus, children,” Dominique Jackson, one of several trans actors cast in the drama’s eight-episode first season, says in the clip above. “It’s time to remind the world who we are.”
Oh, snap.

Set in the 1980s, “Pose” is a dance musical that explores the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the ball culture world, the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe and the downtown social and literary scene, according to FX’s official description.
And what is a ball? “Balls are gatherings of people who are not welcome to gather anywhere else,” M.J. Rodriguez explained. (Can we say we’re already not crying, you’re crying — or is it too soon?)
“Pose” will feature the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles in TV history, as well as the largest recurring cast of Lgbtq actors ever for a scripted series. The transgender lineup includes Rodriguez, Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross, who co-star alongside Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek, Billy Porter, Charlayne Woodard, and newcomers Ryan Jamaal Swain, Dyllón Burnside and Angel Bismark Curiel.
