Saturday Night Live host Jake Gyllenhaal went through a maze of Southwest employees–and one Hudson News cashier, mistakenly–all in an effort to simply cancel his flight.
While being transferred to nearly ten different people, Gyllenhaal encountered customer service representatives who mispronounced his name all sorts of ways, those with odd racial views, those who demanded something in return, and unreasonably long and indecipherable audio-only confirmation codes, among other things.
Gyllenhaal ultimately was transferred by a trainee (Devon Walker) to a Hudson News cashier (Andrew Dismukes), before being reconnected...

Bowen Yang is opening up about the mental and physical impact of trying to juggle Wicked filming and Saturday Night Live at the same time.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the comedian-actor said it became “mentally fraying” flying back and forth between the Wicked set in London and NBC’s sketch comedy show in New York City, even causing SNL creator Lorne Michaels to worry.
“This is when Lorne Michaels comes in,” Yang said. “Whatever you think about the situation, however you think it’s unique to you, however you think you might be the exception to the rule, Lorne is here to be like, ‘Actually, it might not be so good on the body for you to fly back and forth between New York and London to go shoot a movie.’”

Bowen Yang realized that he couldn’t defy gravity — or sleep deprivation — when filming “Wicked.”
The “SNL” star told Vanity Fair that he found it “mentally fraying” to fly back and forth between the “Wicked” production in London and his weekly sketch series in New York City. Even “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels seemingly warned Yang against spreading himself too thin.

Leading up to Sabrina Carpenter’s Saturday Night Live debut this weekend, and host Jake Gyllenhaal’s return, the pair teamed up with Bowen Yang to tease the upcoming season finale.
In the video, in seeming reference to her sun-kissed hit song “Espresso,” Yang exclaims: “Sabrina, your song is stuck in my head!” After the cast member proceeds to sing, “Summertime is coming everybody is into board shorts,” Carpenter gently informs him that it’s not her song.
Regardless, Gyllenhaal joins Yang’s enthusiam as they declare, “Board Shorts Summer!

The season finale of Saturday Night Live arrives this weekend, and the occasion brought together Jake Gyllenhaal, cast member Bowen Yang, and musical guest Sabrina Carpenter for the traditional Thursday promo.
As usual, it was an exercise in hilarity.
In the first segment, the lads claim to have a Carpenter song stuck in their heads. Only it’s not her song.
Then Yang mentions that Gyllenhaal’s body in Roadhouse was the inspiration for his own fitness journey, before scoffing at the notion.
Finally, the big finish: Where does the name “Carpenter” come from? Watch the clip for the surprising answer.

The Golden Horse Film Festival, which operates the premier awards in the Chinese-language film industry, has teamed up with Cannes’ Marché du Film to showcase a handful of new films and projects under the banner Golden Horse Goes to Cannes.
To be presented May 16, the five films comprise new works from directors Chen Yu-hsun, Yang Ya-che, Huang Xi, Giddens Ko and John Hsu, with such high-profile producers as Lee Lieh, Sylvia Chang, Aileen Li, Jeffrey Chan and Hou Hsiao-hsien.
Yang Ya-che, known for Golden Horse-winning “The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful,” and for shaping the careers of several actors, returns behind the camera with “The Chronicles of Libidoists.”
It was a standout at the Golden Horse project market, while at the production stage, the scandalous nature of its erotic take on “The Little Mermaid” tale meant that the names of the cast had to be kept secret.

Henry Kissinger may have only died in November, but the controversial politician is already set to get the satirical comedy treatment.
Tim Roth, Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are in talks to star in the feature film “Kissinger Takes Paris,” set during Kissinger’s younger, pre-Vietnam War years.
Roth (“The Hateful Eight,” “Sundown”) will star as Kissinger, while Jeff Stanzler will direct from his screenplay, and Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of Bcdf Pictures (“To Leslie”) are producing along with Stanzler. CAA Media Finance and Concourse Media are co-representing domestic rights, and Concourse is handling international rights, with sales launching at Cannes.
The film — likened to political satires such as “Don’t Look Up” and “Wag the Dog” — is set to tell the (mostly) true story of when Kissinger, described as “a middle-aged, politically washed-up Harvard professor,” traveled to...

Exclusive: Mike Goodridge’s growing UK production company Good Chaos, which is in Cannes with Un Certain Regard title Santosh, has had a minority equity investment from Cameron Lamb’s Paris-based audio platform Alexander.
The investment will give Alexander an opportunity to develop its growing non-fiction IP library, across film and TV formats, while Good Chaos has been able to grow its headcount, operations and production reach.
The companies’ first joint film project is Wife, Witch, Poisoner, Whore, a period thriller based on the Alexander audiobook by Katherine Rundell, and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.
The official synopsis reads: “Beautiful, rich, clever, and determined English noblewoman Frances Howard was a dazzling celebrity at the court of James I. But when the unhappy teenage bride rebelled against the patriarchy of her day, she was put on trial for witchcraft, infidelity and murder – very nearly at the expense of her life.”

It was all about mothers at the top of this week’s pre-Mother’s Day Saturday Night Live.
The variety show dispensed with its typical topical cold open for one that featured SNL castmembers sharing moments with their moms.
Kenan Thompson kicked off the show, appearing on the Studio 8H stage with his mom because, he said, “it’s “Mother’s Day in about 29 minutes,” which, she declared, meant there was still “plenty of time to buy a gift.”
“With so many upsetting stories in the world right now, we thought we’d take a break from a regular cold open and hear some heartwarming stories from our moms instead.”
Still Thompson’s mom said she wanted to see who would play Stormy Daniels in a cold open focused on the porn star’s testimony in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial. That wasn’t the only reference to...

As soon as "Challengers" hit theaters last week, we had a feeling "Saturday Night Live" would be planning some sort of parody around it. Although not a major box office hit, the movie is huge on social media thanks to how absurdly horny and chaotic its love triangle is. It's a conversation-starter for sure, not to mention it's filled with some memorable churro-based phallic imagery.
Although "SNL" sadly couldn't get the movie's lead stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, or Josh O'Connor to host an episode, they have given us the next best thing with a "Challengers"-themed sketch. Only this time, the love triangle's based around Sonny Angel dolls instead of tennis, and Bowen Yang is one of the dolls. Using some charmingly clumsy practical effects and the movie's "stressful but horny" soundtrack, the live sketch lets us watch as Yang's tiny character flirts and argues with Hernández's boyfriend character,...

Is that Tashi Donaldson or Dua Lipa?
Saturday Night Live audiences were treated to a nod at Luca Guadagnino’s latest film Challengers during a sketch featuring host Dua Lipa as a somewhat intense woman who had invited a date over to her apartment — aka SNL featured player Marcello Hernández.
Naturally, one of the first things he notices when he walks into the room is the hundreds of Sonny Angel dolls she has lining her walls.
“They’re companions for 25-year-old working women,” she explains. But, she assures, her date won’t need to compete with her 650+ dolls for her affection…just one.
Cue Bowen Yang, dressed as one of said dolls. Oh, and the Challengers soundtrack.
“I haven’t seen the movie,” Hernández admits, to which Yang replies: “Well, don’t worry, cause you’re about to live it.”

“Spa Night” and “Fire Island” filmmaker Andrew Ahn is set to direct Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang in a new take on “The Wedding Banquet” that has been described as a “reimagination” of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 film.

Ryan Gosling returned to “SNL” this week in a cold open with “Barbie” co-star Kate McKinnon, reviving one of their most famous sketches, “Close Encounter,” in which they recount being abducted by aliens and their vastly different experiences aboard the spaceship.
The original sketch debuted eight years ago and featured Gosling and McKinnon, alongside Cecily Strong (it currently has 60 million views on YouTube). The actor also recreated this sketch on his second time hosting six years ago. In every attempt to act through “Close Encounter” Gosling has heroically attempted to get through McKinnon’s genius bit without breaking, every time he has failed. Endearingly, Gosling broke again at least once during this one.
Bowen Yang and Mike Day played Nsa investigators in tonight’s cold open. Day tells Gosling, McKinnon, and Sarah Sherman, “Now you’re all here because you’ve experienced a verified alien abduction.”

China’s Xixi Pictures has arrived at the 61st MIPTV buoyed by a slate of recent successes that have helped the production house, based in Beijing and Shanghai, celebrate its fourth anniversary, but the company is nevertheless keen also to share with the international content community what’s on the immediate horizon.
Over the past 12 months, Xixi’s development has been pushed along by four significant productions that founder and CEO Yang Xiaopei says reflect an increased diversity not only “in house” but in terms of viewing demands across a global audience increasingly turning its head toward Chinese-produced content.
The school-age drama The Youth Memories, the domestic drama Alliance, as well as the fantasy The Last Immortal and the family drama Island were all able to find impressive audience reach across the state broadcaster CCTV, as well as on the streaming platform Tencent Video and the VOD service Mango TV.

The Kogonada film, which was critically ranked as one of the best movies of 2022, debuted at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival before playing in the Spotlight section at Sundance. Beijing, June 28 (Ians) E-sport athletes need to be placed under the protection of robust anti-doping programs, as they can be affected by doping problems as much as athletes in traditional disciplines, said World Anti-Doping Agency vice president Yang Yang.
The first Olympic E-sport Week concluded in Singapore on Sunday, and E-sports will be a medal sport for the first time at the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games, showing the sports’ increasing influence and indicating its possible inclusion in future Olympic Games.
With E-sports growing fast in numbers of participants and competitions, Wada expressed its concern over the potential threat of doping.
“The doping problem of E-sports has not only attracted Wada’s attention, actually we have already started the conversation and discussed clean sport issues with the international E-sport federation and it knows there is a potential issue with drug taking,” Yang told Xinhua in an interview.

Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but the two-time nominee will be getting a golden statuette this year after all – and in very good company too.

Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, will also be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the untelevised event.

Angela Bassett will receive an Oscar this year, after all.
The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star is among four people the academy’s board of governors will present honorary Oscars to at the Governors Awards later this year, the academy announced on Monday. Legendary writer, director, and actor Mel Brooks and acclaimed editor Carol Littleton will join Bassett as honorary Oscar winners. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will go to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.
Bassett was a popular pick to win her first competitive Oscar this year for the Marvel sequel, but the actress lost Best Supporting Actress to “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Jamie Lee Curtis. Bassett was a previous nominee for 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” where she played Tina Turner. Other acclaimed performances for which she failed to receive academy recognition include “Malcolm X,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “Boyz N the Hood,...

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”
However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble.

In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.

Bill Maher celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Friday during his Real Time on HBO – or, as he referred to it, “Alcoholic Christmas” – by bringing up the dangerous parallels between the religious hatreds that fueled politics in last century Ireland and the turmoil in today’s United States between Democrats and Republicans.
“You can’t think about the Irish without thinking about the division,” Maher said, harkening back to the violent rebellions that created a fractured society there. Now, the same level of intensity is bubbling between Democrats and Republicans here, he noted. “We used to pray for the nation. Now each side prays the other side doesn’t destroy the nation.”
Taking excerpts from a speech former President Donald Trump gave recently at the Cpac convention, Maher noted how it reflected an almost Biblical level of intensity about smiting the other side. It was “big talk from a guy...

With the help of spot-on impersonator Nelson Franklin, Jimmy Kimmel played quite a montage making fun of Congressman “Curious George” Santos’ reelection filing Wednesday night.
After announcing that Santos had filed paperwork indicating his plans to run for reelection in 2024, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host introduced the “first of many ads announcing this campaign.”
“Times are tough. Money is tight. Americans deserve better. I’m George Santos, and I’m running for reelection,” the congressman said in the beginning of the mock ad. “As the child of a mother who was Jewish and a father who was a velociraptor, I know all too well the challenges that are faced by everyday Americans.”

In the latest Saturday Night Live episode, Jenna Ortega, the youngest person to host the show this season, performed a parody skit of the 1998 film The Parent Trap alongside Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen.
She acted out the twins Hallie and Annie in Nancy Meyers‘ big hit, which was itself a remake of the 1961 version starring Hayley Mills. Bowen Yang, cast as the less-than-competent director, is leading a rehearsal of the infamous scene when Hallie and Annie realize that they are twins in their summer camp cabin. Yang asks Armisen, a crew member, to step in as Ortega’s “twin.”
Armisen, however, keeps interjecting with inappropriate and random ad-libs, professing his love for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Lisa Rinna and commenting on how “hot” Shawn Mendes is.
Eventually, he and Ortega act out the part when they piece together parts of an old photograph of their parents, which match perfectly.

The 2023 Academy Awards may have gone off without a hitch, but the Academy president Janet Yang is ready to welcome back Will Smith…to an extent.
After Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, the Best Actor winner was banned from all Academy events for the next decade; Smith can still however be nominated. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Yang told The Hollywood Reporter that Smith is welcome to get his nameplate engraved on the Oscar statue as the “King Richard” actor did not attend the Governors Ball after the ceremony last year, where nameplates are added to the awards.
“He earned the Oscar,” Yang said. “He should have his name engraved on it. I don’t know if he should personally come. But yeah, we can arrange.”
Reflecting on her initial reaction watching Smith attack Rock last year onstage, Yang said, “Truly, we were numb.

Yang, the Queens-born daughter of Chinese immigrants, is only the 36th person — and just the fourth female, second person of color and first person of Asian descent — to lead Hollywood’s most powerful organization, following in the footsteps of luminaries like Douglas Fairbanks, Frank Capra, Bette Davis, George Stevens, Gregory Peck, Robert Wise and Karl Malden.
Over the course of a conversation at the Loews Hollywood Hotel, where Yang has been staying this week in order to oversee preparations for the Oscars at the adjacent Dolby Theatre, the 66-year-old reflected on a life and career that has defied the odds at every turn.

There's a reason athletes don't often host "Saturday Night Live," and recent Super Bowl champ Travis Kelce just proved why. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end took the stage at Studio 8H last night to make his hosting debut, and he brought the same enthusiasm that many professional athletes have brought to the late night sketch series before him, from Michael Jordan to Peyton Manning. However, though Kelce clearly has charisma, what he doesn't have are any of the other skills that make a good "SNL" host. That means that most of this new episode was a waste. Though there were sporadic laughs to be found, if it wasn't for the more reliable pieces of the "SNL" cast, this episode would have been a total dud.
So let's reluctantly dig into what the Travis Kelce-hosted episode of "Saturday Night Live" had to offer.
What Was The Best Sketch Of The Night?...

Panaji, Goa, March 5 (Ians) Table Tennis powerhouse China, swept both the singles titles at the first ever Wtt Star Contender Goa, when world number four Wang Yidi brushed aside Chinese Taipei’s Cheng-i-Ching 4-0 in a 37-minute demolition, here at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium at Taleigao.
That confirmed the singles sweep as the men’s singles was an all-Chinese affair, in which Liang Jingkun beat 17-year-old compatriot Lin Shidong 4-2 in the best of seven final, which was a much closer affair. This was also Wang’s second consecutive Wtt Star Contender title, after her win in Budapest in July last year.
China all the way in singles
In the women’s singles, Cheng appeared simply outclassed by Yang. Only in the second game there was a moment when both were tied at eight, but beyond that brief period, Wang was in complete control throughout the match.

The Saturday Night Live cold open featured a Fox & Friends segment where the hosts of the Fox News morning show get Rupert Murdoch, chairman of Fox Corp. who’s currently in a legal battle, and Alex Murdaugh, a man convicted of murdering his wife and son, mixed up.
“You may have heard that Fox News is currently facing a $1.6 billion dollar lawsuit from Dominion Voting System,” Mikey Day’s Steve Doocy said, opening the March 4 episode. A complaint was filed against Fox Corp. and Murdoch on Friday over allegations that the network chief gave confidential information to former president Donald Trump’s campaign in 2020.
“I’m surprised because I’m such a fan of dominions. The little yellow guys with the overalls,” Bowen Yang’s Brian Kilmeade responded. Day’s Doocy clarified that he’s not talking about minions, the babbling species from Despicable Me, but the Dominion voting machines lawsuit: “Our boss,...

“Saturday Night Live” focused on Dominion Voting Systems’ ongoing defamation lawsuit against Fox News for the cold open this week, and unfortunately, the fake “Fox & Friends” hosts couldn’t keep their lawsuit details straight. As a result, Heidi Gardner’s Ainsley Earhardt mistook Fox CEO Rupert Murdoch for convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh.
To kick off the episode, Mikey Day, Gardner and Bowen Yang returned as Fox News hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade, respectively, first complaining about being in New York, a Democrat-run city. But things quickly turned to the ongoing suit against the network, with the hosts acknowledging recent testimony from Fox CEO Rupert Murdoch, admitting that some Fox News hosts knowingly touted election lies on-air.
Yang’s Kilmeade admitted he was surprised by the conflict, noting that he loves “da minions,” referring to the yellow babbling creatures from “Despicable Me.” Day’s Doocy quickly corrected him,...
