Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton opened up about the police shooting in Charlotte earlier this week, suggesting that those involved be held responsible during a press conference on Wednesday. Newton started off by saying that his high-profile platform can be seen as a “lose-lose” situation because if he speaks on the police shootings he’ll be critiqued and if he doesn’t speak out, he’ll be branded as “fake.” Despite the potential criticism, the 27-year-old said he was dismayed by how justice has been dispensed recently. I have absolutely no shame in admitting that last night’s One Tree Hill finale reduced me to tears at several points. For fans of the show, the episode did what the show had always done best (and what often brought scorn and ridicule from folks who didn’t get the appeal): It embraced its own predictability and cheesiness and while wrapping viewers in the warm and comforting embrace of a world where dreams come true and good almost always triumphs over evil. Like almost no other, Hill was a show which not only remembered its past, but knew that fans did as well and regularly rewarded them with references to events — big and small — to characters, moments and jokes from previous seasons. Here are our five favorites from last night’s finale.

Warning: If you’ve yet to watch Wednesday’s heartbreaking episode of One Tree Hill, avert your eyes now. We repeat, do not read on! Everyone else, proceed… with caution.
After nine scandal-filled, scheme-riddled, redemption-seeking seasons, beloved One Tree Hill baddie Dan Scott on Wednesday night bid an emotional — and final — farewell to the shrub-deficient town.
While his death wasn’t entirely unexpected, the rather exceptional hour of the long-running CW series pulled off a feat rarely seen in TV today: the unspoiled return of a fan fave character.

Let me begin this rant by saying that Dan Scott is one of the most interesting, dimensional characters "One Tree Hill" has ever seen, and Paul Johansson is a fantastic actor, director, and all-around human being. He also has very excellent hair. This isn't meant as a criticism of Johansson at all.
It's also not meant as a criticism of "One Tree Hill" executive producer Mark Schwahn or any of his writing staff. It's simply a (very opinionated) look at a character from a dedicated fan of the show. (Because, for the record, I do really, really love this show, and have since I was 16.)
In this week's episode, Dan saved Nathan from his kidnappers and, quite literally, took a bullet for him. Because of Dan, Nathan will be reunited with his wife and children. It was arguably one of the most thrilling, suspenseful episodes in the series' nine-year run,...

Are you crying? We're crying.
Tuesday's Season 8 finale of "One Tree Hill" was not the series finale -- just hours before airtime, The CW officially picked up a 13-episode Season 9. That said, it could have easily served as a satisfying end to the series. Though Mark Schwahn shot several cliffhangers to end the season on in case Season 9 got the green light, he ultimately decided to end with some closure.
The season ender spanned a year - so much time that Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush) went from having just learned of her pregnancy to giving birth to twin boys, Davis and Jude. With Davis, Brooke and Julian (Austin Nichols) stuck with the Tree Hill trend of naming their kids after their mothers' maiden names, while Jude's name came from "Hey Jude," which John Lennon wrote for his son, Julian.
She was also enjoying the successful reopening of Karen's Cafe, which...

There have been many times over the course of One Tree Hill's eight seasons when they have unnecessarily made every second on screen seem not only important, but epic in nature. "This Is My House, This Is My Home" certainly straddled that line, but was effective for two reasons.
First of all, unlike some episodes that came before it, much of what happened in this season finale was very important. And secondly, when this was being created it could have been their series finale. The constant dramatic music combined with powerful stories was a necessity for the last ever episode of One Tree Hill.
Fortunately for us fans, word has been received from The CW that we will be getting a ninth and final season next year. That should give them plenty of time to wrap up the stories that were either teased or wrapped up poorly in "This Is My House.

Even the perpetrator's own lawyer admits his acts were "reprehensible" and "deplorable." So what led Keith Scott Brown to make surprise guilty pleas in a Provo, Utah, courtroom Thursday, capping a deal for the horrors against own children? His journey to justice began last year when Brown, a Mormon, approached his bishop at the Church of Latter Day Saints to confess his crimes, his attorneys say. These crimes included abusing his daughters Desirae, 32, Deondra, 30, and Melody, 26, all members of the popular Julliard-trained quintet of siblings. Brown pleaded guilty to sodomy on a child under 14, and two charges of sex abuse of a child,...

It kind of came out of left field, but "Darkness on the Edge of Town" was a riveting episode of television.
In it, the writers simplified his show, cutting out a slew of characters, and finished off the fall season with a bang. Simply put, this was a great way to end the year.
One Tree Hill has always been able to do wonderful things with epic moments when it wants to. Whether it was Lucas' car accident, Dan killing Keith, or the first car crash on the bridge, the Oth flare for the dramatic will always rope me.
And didn't we all start having some flashbacks when Brooke, Jamie and Julian were in that river? I was half-expecting Rachel to pop up from under a seat cushion at certain points.
But what was so great about this episode was its simplification. There was no Clay. There was no love triangle.
