Unfortunately, HBO is as good at making fans wait as they are at video game adaptations. As is prestige TV tradition, it’ll be quite some time before we see the second season of The Last of Us. While fans can always replay the first game or wade into major spoiler territory with The Last of Us Part II, you could also opt for some lo-fi post-apocalyptic stories.
Get ready to gasp, cry, and stay up all night reading six brilliant page-turners that are perfect follow-ups to The Last of Us. The end of the world features in a huge amount of novels, but we’ve sifted through bloater-sized mountains of books to find some of the most similar in theme, tone, and sometimes plot.

Covid-19 has impacted so many people in so many different ways and we're starting to see more and more of the art that has been created during the pandemic lockdown or as a result of the pandemic. Haunthology is a new graphic novel from Jeremy Haun, featuring 24 interlocking short stories that reflect the claustrophobia, isolation, and uncertainty that was experienced over the last year, and we have an exclusive preview, along with details on the newly launched Kickstarter campaign:
An online binge shopper receives a grisly package.
A horde of the decaying undead grapples with its dwindling humanity.
A family man endures an endless grind of the mundane as cosmic madness looms outside.

Hulu’s new anthology horror series “Monsterland” isn’t about the things that go bump in the night. It’s about the things that go bump within us, what makes us tick, what makes us monsters. It’s a vision of horror that showrunner Mary Laws was drawn to — in spite of her attempts to move outside the genre. Laws burst onto the scene in 2016, writing the script for the Nicolas Winding Refn feature “The Neon Demon.”
“The Neon Demon” set up Laws as a horror director, but she didn’t want to thermatically repeat herself. “I wasn’t really interested in anything that was like the slasher, blood and guts kind of horror,” she told IndieWire. Laws wanted to investigate character, and that’s when she discovered Nathan Ballingrud’s book “North American Lake Monsters: Stories.” Found within Ballingrud’s book were elements that spoke not just to Laws...

The uptick in horror anthologies over the last few years has been interesting to deconstruct. Seemingly gone are the days of productions like “Tales From the Crypt” which always winked at the camera while sating audiences’ thirst for blood. While that sentiment remains in the likes of Shudder’s “Creepshow,” most anthologies in that vein blend in social commentary, turning the horror inward to leave us with the message, more often than not, that the true monsters are within us.
It’s trite, it’s simplistic, and it’s at the center of Hulu’s new anthology series “Monsterland.” Based on Nathan Ballingrud’s novel “North American Lake Monsters: Stories,” “Monsterland” tells eight different stories about people dealing with loss, regret, guilt, and loneliness with a slight tinge of actual monsters thrown in. Those seeking more overt scares, a la “Channel Zero,” the aforementioned “Creepshow” or even AMC’s “The Terror...

The horror genre is a fun one in that it can go in many directions, but it is often dominated by men in front of and behind the camera. Hulu’s new anthology series Monsterland, which debuts Friday, subverts that expectation with a female showrunner and a cast and crew dominated by women.
Monsterland creator and showrunner Mary Laws was joined by actress Kelly Marie Tran and director of photography Anka Malatynska and director Desiree Akhavan at the virtual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews event to talk about the new series and how it champions female narratives.
“I think that its safe to say that as forward-moving as Hollywood is, I don’t think there are opportunities for women’s stories on screen, for women in leadership roles and for women protagonist roles,” said Laws. “I think so often I found myself in a room with a lot of men making...

Of the eight installments of Hulu’s new regional horror anthology Monsterland, not a single episode is a complete success — which isn’t the sort of proportion one would want to boast about, even in a notoriously hit-and-miss format.
Trust me, nothing would give me more pleasure than to be able to point to any one of the episodes, adapted from Nathan Ballingrud’s North America Lake Monsters: Stories, and say: “Here’s where the intriguing pieces all come together.” Instead, there are episodes in which a star performance or two keep things watchable even if the spooky premise ...

If there’s one thing horror hits home time and time again, it’s that the worst type of monsters to exist are of the human variety. That’s certainly the case in Monsterland, an eight-episode anthology series based on Nathan Ballingrud’s novel North America Lake Monsters: Stories. Each episode features a self-contained story set in a different American city, […]...

Horror can come from anywhere: an unfamiliar European hostel, a remote sleepaway camp in the woods or even just in the comfy confines of the human brain. Every now and then it can be fun to reconnect with that child-like portion of our minds that is truly susceptible to irrational fear. The best way is to merely just hear a good scary story.
But perhaps the best place to find horror is on your friendly neighborhood Hulu. Hulu is best known for its TV comedy offerings but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in pure terror.

Kicking off a month of streaming horror offerings that includes “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Welcome to the Blumhouse,” and “Books of Blood,” Hulu’s “Monsterland” enters the horror anthology world via an acclaimed collection of short stories, “North America Lake Monsters,” by author Nathan Ballingrud. Created by Mary Laws, who also wrote all of the best episodes, “Monsterland” is deeply melancholic, philosophical horror, the kind that imagines a world of creatures in closets and under beds, but posits that humans may be the greatest monsters of all.

With October just around the corner, the major streaming services are boosting their horror output, whether that means “Netflix and Chills” or Blumhouse teaming up with Amazon Prime for some exclusive titles. Now, Hulu have just announced how they’ll be contributing to the Halloween fun, with additions to their library including a strong mix of original and licensed content. What, then, can we expect to see next month from the streamer’s “Huluween” lineup?
Film highlights include Bad Hair, a Justin Simien written-and-directed horror comedy that Hulu picked up at Sundance this year. Set in the 1980s, the plot sees a young woman’s career prospects improve when she gets a new weave, only for it to turn out to be evil. Other originals to look out for include a Books of Blood anthology movie, which adapts several of Clive Barker’s short stories.

Exclusive: Leaping from last week’s Season 1 finale of Evil, Mike Colter is wasting no time getting truly scary in Monsterland. The star of the latest CBS series from Michelle and Robert King has joined Hulu’s horror anthology series.
The Annapurna TV-produced anthology series — which is full of encounters with mermaids, fallen angels and other strange beasts — follows broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, ultimately showing there is a thin line between man and monster.
Monsterland is based on the short stories from Nathan Ballingrud’s collection, North American Lake Monsters.
Colter will play Brian in the episode, titled “Newark, New Jersey.” It centers around Brian, a grief-stricken husband (Colter) who blames himself after his daughter disappears under his supervision. Guilty and despairing, he refuses to believe she is dead and is unable to move on with his life or be emotionally available to his wife.
