Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling are set to lead the cast of “Pillion,” described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart” and being produced by multi-Oscar-winning powerhouse Element Pictures.
The film — to be launched in Cannes by Cornerstone, which is handling worldwide sales — marks the feature debut of Harry Lighton, whose short “Wren Boys” was nominated for best British short at the 2018 BAFTAs, was nominated for a BIFA and had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Pillion” follows Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower letting life pass him by. That is until Ray (Skarsgård), the impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, takes him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life, introducing him to a community of kinky, queer bikers and taking all sorts of virginities along the way. But as Colin steps deeper into Ray’s world of rules and mysteries,...

Co-directing duo Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion return for Becky, a smartly conceived home invasion thriller that plays like a twisted coming-of-age movie.
Rising star Lulu Wilson plays 13 year old Becky, who’s recently lost her mother to cancer and is horrified when her father Jeff (Joel McHale) tricks her into spending the weekend at their remote lakeside summer house with his new fiancée Kayla (Amanda Brugel) and her young son (Isaiah Rockcliffe). However, she barely has time to throw a strop before escaped convict Dominick (Kevin James) arrives with three henchmen in tow and begins torturing her father, demanding to know the whereabouts of a key.

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

But When She Was Bad, She Was Awful: Milott & Murnion Subvert Allegiances in Violent Thriller
The innocuously titled Becky is the third feature from co-director Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion and as it arrives in the midst of a country suddenly forced to acknowledge its systemic racism and trenchantly racist history, one wonders if its filmmakers would have changed its title to Karen had they written it today. Because Becky, as we eventually come to find, is certainly not the innocent little white girl we expect.
But beyond its obvious violent spatter which announces its ‘heroine’s’ penchant for violence and talents for killing, the script, penned by Nick Morris, Ruckus Skye and Lane Skye, ends on a note of perilous, ambiguity which completely subverts our understanding of what the film might really have been all about.…...

There should be special place in movie hell for lazy filmmakers who get off showing adults terrorizing children and animals. Is there an easier or cheaper way to jolt an audience? That’s a rhetorical question. Becky, available on demand and at a drive-in near you starting June 5th, is too mindless and meh to get Child Protective Services and the Aspca all up in a twist. But

We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.
The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.
“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.

In today’s film news roundup, Kazakh action-adventure movie “Tomiris” and Scottish music film “Beats” find U.S. homes and the Lulu Wilson thriller “Becky” opens at more than 40 drive-ins.
Acquisition
Arclight Films has sold Well Go USA the U.S. distribution rights to the historical action-adventure “Tomiris,” centered on Queen Tomiris during the 6th Century B.C.
The film, a co-production between Kazakhfilm Studios and Sataifilm, centers on Tomaris uniting divided nomadic tribes to create a powerful nation capable of repelling Persia. According to historical accounts, Tomiris and her army defeated Cyrus the Great in 530 B.C.
Almira Tursyn stars as Tomiris along with Adil Akhmetov and Aizhan Lighg, and they all perform their own stunts. Akan Sataytev directed the film, which was theatrically released in Kazakhstan in October and became one of the highest-grossing films in the country’s history.

What if Kevin James was cast as a neo-Nazi? That’s one of the many uninspired questions that Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gruesome “Becky” answers in a movie driven by an increasingly boring set of narrative dares. Others include: What if the protagonist was a teenage girl so angry she could actually kill? What if there was a MacGuffin that was literally a key that didn’t open anything? Even as the movie The pair’s earlier film, “Cooties,” suffered from similar issues, attempting to build a thin idea (what if a zombie pandemic only turned little kids into monsters?) but at least it yielded more entertaining results.
“Becky” is as grim and gruesome as any horror movie in recent memory, but that alone can’t save this gross-out thriller. Still, the story opens with promise, through candy-colored title cards and fast cuts between Becky (the wonderful Lulu Wilson...

Comedians going dark can sometimes lead to a real cinematic discovery. They don’t even need to necessarily go dark, but to show another side of themselves is often a joy to witness. Look no further than Adam Sandler’s revelatory turn last year in Uncut Gems, continuing what he’s been able to show in work like Punch Drunk Love. Now, Sandler’s pal Kevin James takes a crack at it in the thriller Becky, a gory gender swapped take on material covered far lighter in Home Alone. James is certainly chillingly evil here, but the mean streak, especially in relation to dogs, found here ends up soiling the picture. The movie is a thriller, beginning with some father/daughter drama. Becky (Lulu Wilson) is headed to her family’s lake house with her father Jeff (Joel McHale) and their two dogs, sometime after her mother/his wife has passed away.

The line between vengeance and murder is illusory at best, and outright deceptive at worst. This means that, in cinema, there can be no revenge without bloodlust. Murder is still murder, no matter the cause. However, when filmmakers Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion pit a 13-year-old girl (an electric Lulu Wilson) against a gang of neo-Nazis (led by Kevin James), it’s difficult to think of anything but comeuppance.
It’s a glorious B-movie concept, upping the ante of Home Alone with copious amounts of bloodshed and turning the antagonists into the most loathsome bunch there is. Becky delivers wholeheartedly on these ideas, satiating our desire to see awful human beings get completely wrecked by someone half their size and age. However, what ends up making Becky truly interesting is its fascination with moral culpability and with the seeds of anger that are sowed by both personal trauma and social institutions,...

Thirteen can be a petulant age, but hell hath no fury like the pubescent heroine of “Becky,” who has the ill luck to confront a gang of escaped cons — though that’s definitely worse luck for them, as it turns out. Offering fairly brutal action on the verge of black comedy, this indie thriller from the directorial duo of Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott is lean, mean, nasty fun that will appeal to genre fans with hard-edged tastes. It may be less appealing to surprised fans of comedian Kevin James, who’s a long way from “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” as the sadistic chief villain here. Selected for Tribeca this year, the feature is instead going straight to digital and on demand (plus available theatrical venues) on June 5.

Although he may be best known as Doug Heffernan in The King of Queens or a diehard mall cop in the Paul Blart movies, Kevin James plays an altogether vicious villain in the home invasion thriller Becky. Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the filmmakers behind Cooties and Bushwick), Becky is coming to VOD and Digital on June 5th, and the film's trailer offers a look at James' intense character that's a far cry from his comedic roles.
