Speaking at the 5th Conecta Fiction, Ana Bond, Sony Pictures VP and executive director for Latin American and Hispanic markets confirmed that Sony’s Entertainment division had no plans to launch its own streamer.
During her online keynote on the first day of this year’s hybrid event, Bond added that the focus remained on partnerships and creating “the best possible content.”
“It was a strategic decision that the company made some years ago – Sony wanted to focus more on content and creators,” said Bond.
“It means you are free work with everyone in the market, which is what it means to be independent. We work in all markets with all existing platforms channels, Pay TV, streamers, Open TV – and we have no limitations except for the fact that we are looking for best possible content for the screen,” she added.
According to Bond, unless content is being made for a specific customer,...

Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has tapped Oscar-nominated scribe Guillermo Arriaga to be the creative lead on “Yo No Soy Mendoza,” an Spt project Colombian writer-creator Fernando Gaitan was developing before he died unexpectedly in January 2019.

Focused on Latin America and U.S. Hispanic markets, last week’s MipCancun Online Plus market-conference was a boutique affair, attracting 600 delegates from 500 companies and 44 countries.
Far more than MipTV and even Mipcom, however, MipCancun’s lineup of speakers marked a virtual who’s who of relevant leading industry figures, led by the top executives for Latin America at companies shaping the region’s film-tv future: Netflix’s Francisco Ramos; Disney Plus’ Leonardo Aranguibel; ViacomCBS Intl. Studios and Networks Americas’ J.C. Acosta; Amazon Prime Video’s Pablo Iacoviello; NBCUniversal Telemundo’s Marcos Santana; and Sony Pictures Television’s Ana Bond.
Wrapping Friday, 2020’s MipCancun kicked off on Nov. 17 as Disney Plus launched across Latin America. That seems appropriate. One subject dominated most keynote and panels, one way or another: The impact of the still ongoing Ott revolution on Latin America’s production sector. Below, find 10 takeaways from MipCancun 2020’s conference.

Sony Pictures Television Latin America is developing a new Colombian drama series inspired by popular hip hop band ChocQuibTown that will examine racism in Latin America and what it means to be Afro-Latino.
Announced Sunday during the American Black Film Festival, series “Somos Los Prietos” (“We Are the Black Ones”) marks the first cross-company collaboration – referred to internally as “One Sony” – between Spt’s international production arm and Sony Music Latin, which counts the Latin Grammy Award-winning Afro-Colombian trio among its roster of artists.
Set in Condoto, a town on Colombia’s Pacific coast, “Somos Los Prietos” follows a group of adolescent friends of Afro-Latin descent as they struggle with the challenges of poverty and racism and seek to avoid the recruitment efforts of local armed commandos while trying to form a band and take part in a festival organized by their favorite group, ChocQuibTown. Along the way they confront their family,...

In a landmark deal, Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has inked a multi-project development deal with acclaimed Chilean writer and author Jose Ignacio ‘Chascas’ Valenzuela, a prominent voice in the LGBTQ community.
The three-project deal kicks off with “El Filo de Tu Piel,” a gay-themed romance based on Valenzuela’s eponymous novel.
“A prolific screenwriter, Chascas’ impeccable storytelling talent is essential to bringing such important LGBTQ representation to the small screen,” said Ana Bond, SVP and MD of international production in Latin America and U.S. Hispanic for Spt.
The new pact dovetails with Spt’s strategy to forge development and production deals with key players around the world. Last year, it signed a co-development and co-production deal with Spain’s The Mediapro Studio, which started with thriller series “Implacables – Mexico.” A development agreement with Colombia’s Fernando Gaitan, the creator of global hit “Ugly Betty,” was unfortunately scuttled after his...
