Director/writer: Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo.
Afterlife is a film from independent director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo ("Pate"). Afterlife is her first feature film and the title reviewed here was released on DVD and Blu-Ray August 3rd, 2010 by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film hosts exceptional performances by the central characters, which include Liam Neeson (Taken), Justin Long (Drag Me to Hell) and Christina Ricci (Cursed). This often tense thriller takes on the ever elusive subject of: what happens after death? Just as in reality, this question is trying, but slightly redundant when bandied about for over a 100 minutes.
The film mainly focuses in on Ricci's character, Anna Taylor, who is involved in a fatal car accident. Her body is dead, yet her soul remains. To prepare her for death is a vitriolic mortician, played by Liam Neeson. His gift is speaking to the dead, which subdues the recently deceased and he prepares future clients...

Well, folks, 2010 is officially in the can, and unlike 2009 horror movie fans took it in the can a lot less this year. Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
Don't just read along, though ... give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you regarding what we nailed and what we dropped the ball on, so let the games begin!

What happens when you are so disengaged with your life that you live every day just making sure you do the basics that is expected of you? Do you take what life has given you and just toss it aside, not allowing life to give you something to actually live for? These are some of the questions that are raised by Director, and writer, Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo in the film After.Life. Agnieszka fills out the cast of her independent film with some great talent as you will find Justin Long, Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson in this film. Ricci plays the young teacher Anna Taylor, who has begun to...

Like, what's the deal, Neil?
Neil isn't a real person.
In the past 5 years I've seen women horror, sci-fi, and fantasy directors representing at least one third of all genre film festival screenings in the United States and in Europe. This year, not so. While there are a few features making the rounds, the same ones appear in all the fests and often they're the Only film directed by a woman in the entire lineup.
Check it out:
Horror/drama After.life, directed Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, already made a theatrical release in the USA and was recently screened in the United Kingdom at London Frightfest alongside only one other horror film by a woman (Hélène Cattet co-directed the awful giallo Amer with Bruno Forzani) and the violent action flick Isle of Dogs by Tammi Sutton and is now in the official lineup for Sitges, Spain. Unless there are films Sitges has not announced yet,...

If I had the holiday time left, I’d be booking a trip to España right about now. The 43rd annual Sitges kicks off on October 7th and their line up so far is impressive. Damned impressive.
In competition are Gregg Araki’s Kaboom (teaser, stills), Christopher Smith’s Black Death (review), Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports (trailer), Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber (clip) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins among many others. In competition in the Panorama section are another great set of films including Shion Sono’s Cold Fish (trailer), Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage (trailer), Jim Mickle’s Stake Land (trailer) and Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film (review).
If those titles aren’t enough, there’s loads more including Rob Stefaniuk’s vampire musical road trip film Suck (review, trailer), James Wan’s Insidious (clip), Adam Green’s Frozen (trailer), Black Lightning (trailer), Super (clip), The Vanishing on 7th...

There are some awesome new DVD and Blu-ray releases this week, so head down to your nearest movie emporium and snap these up pronto:
Kick-Ass (dir. Matthew Vaughn, 2010) – Arguable one of the most original, funny action packed super hero movies we’ve ever seen, this tale of a young boy wanting to make the wrongs in the world right will have you laughing from beginning to end. Starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and the C Word swearing 13 year old Chloe Moretz, the controversial entertainment and originality of narrative is more than likely going to top the charts.
The Last Song (dir. Julie Anne Robinson, 2010) – Another soppy love story starring a singer with her own songs creating the soundtrack. Miley Cyrus takes on a more serious role and tries to rekindle her love for the father who she’s become resentful of after her parent’s divorce. Perfect for the lovers of tear-jerkers.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: "Essentially, Wimpy Kid is only slightly better than its trailers ("Wanna see my secret freckle? It's got a hair in it!") would suggest, and it's sort of like "The Wonder Years" with much less charm and no sense of nostalgia. Unlike the young Fred Savage, actor Zachary Gordon doesn't make us feel for Greg, who isn't so much an anguished soul trapped in a short kid's body but, instead, a conceited, opportunistic, and unfeeling prick with an inexplicably inflated sense of self worth. At home, Greg has a sadistic older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) and inattentive parents Susan (Rachael Harris) and Frank Heffley (Steve Zahn, nooooo) who are portrayed as idiots. At school, fellow outcasts Fregley (Grayson Russell) and Rowley (Robert Capron) are company; the latter is Greg's best friend from grade school, who is suddenly a huge embarrassment with a girly bike, rotund body,...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"A Prophet" (2009)
Directed by Jacques Audiard
Released by Sony Pictures Classics
Audiard's ("The Beat That My Heart Skipped") ridiculously cool prison drama well earns its over two-and-a-half hour runtime -- the transformation of relative newcomer lead Tahar Rahim from illiterate mouse to underworld kingpin never seems forced or unnatural. Rahim's impressive, as is Niels Arestrup as the head of the jail's Corsican mob, but overshadowing both is the film's portrait of a multicultural (if criminal) population that looks nothing like the cast of your average French import. (Matt Singer's review from February.)
"After.Life" (2009)
Directed by Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo
Released by Starz/Anchor Bay
Christina Ricci is dead! But she's not dead. Unless she died! Or did she? In Wojtowicz-Vosloo's feature debut (following her acclaimed 2001 short "Pâté"), Liam Neeson plays a funeral director who's either a sadist plays elaborate mindgames on Ricci's character, or...

Chicago – Loyal readers will know that I am often forgiving of bad horror films merely due to my love for the genre but there’s nothing that can save “After.Life” from the company of the worst movies of 2010. The copious nudity from Christina Ricci and the admittedly interesting premise may draw those who haven’t seen it to this monumentally stupid film but prepare to lose a few brain cells in the process.
DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
A common criticism of horror films is that too many writers have been inspired by great anthology shows like “The Twilight Zone” or “The Outer Limits” and they fail to realize that while their idea may be interesting enough to have made a great half-hour episode of television, it falls apart when stretched to the running time of a feature film. If you’re ever trying to make this point in the future, “After.Life” would...

6.30pm Hatchet II (World Premiere)
FrightFest continues its strong relationship with Adam Green by hosting the world premiere of the sequel to his 2006 slasher sensation. Picking up right where the splatter-tastic original ended, Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family's connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher. The concept of this interesting little horror film was pregnant with promise: A young girl awakes on a mortician's slab convinced she's still alive while the mortician explains that she's dead and he's the only one who can help her over to the other side. From there, you've got two options: Is you is or is you ain't my dead body. For her first feature, Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo (no relation to the Mummy) does an outstanding job balancing your doubt with atmospheric creepiness and great performances from her two principal leads. You're never quite sure which way the wind will blow. Unfortunately, she manages this for about 40 minutes, until the whole house of cards completely collapses from arty-goth-porn into a bitterly cheesy B-grade slasher flick tarted up to look as slick and shiny as the ridiculous red slip Ricci runs around in. That is, when she's not spending the rest of the movie bare-ass naked,...

Do you prefer actors who works from the inside out or the outside in?Michele Mulroney and Kieran MulroneyLos Angeles; co-directors and co-screenwriters, 'Paper Man'Good work is good work, no matter how you get there. However, it's thrilling to witness character-building based on externals. An actor puts on a piece of wardrobe and suddenly his or her posture changes. Those tangible, external choices are satisfying because, as a director, you can actually participate in the actor's often mysterious process by picking out the shoes you think that character might wear. We're big on the physicality of a character. It provides such an important shorthand in the visual medium we work in.In "Paper Man," for example, Emma Stone had a very specific way of walking—dragging her feet—which she developed for the character of Abby. It spoke volumes about how this girl was stuck, emotionally speaking. Similarly,...

Liam Neeson in a very silly fright flick.

"After.Life" is a horror movie without the courage of its grisly convictions. Without much in the way of convictions at all, actually.
Liam Neeson is Eliot Deacon, a suburban undertaker who has a special relationship with his deceased clientele. When Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), a local schoolteacher fresh from a nasty car crash, comes to on his embalming table, she naturally wonders what's up. "You're dead," Eliot gently informs her. But Anna — struck by the fact that she is, after all, still wondering things — begs to disagree. This only makes Eliot pissy. "You all say the same thing," he snaps. And then, pricelessly: "Maybe you should rest now."
Eliot claims to have "a gift" for communicating with the dead. This might have made a nice little movie — 90 minutes of high-toned back-and-forth about the nature of death...

Chicago – “After.Life” is one of the first truly awful films of 2010. Its aggressive solemnity combined with its head-slapping silliness will cause most viewers to simply laugh it off the screen. There’s at least two possible ways to interpret its murky story, and they’re both ludicrous. The only mystery guaranteed to linger in moviegoers’ minds is the inexplicable motivation of Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson to take part in this direct-to-video dreck.
First-time feature director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo tries far too hard to get a reaction out of her audience. There are countless instances where loud clangs are heard on the soundtrack, followed by characters asking Ricci (and presumably the viewer), “Are you scared?” Frankly, there were more scares in “Casper.” The filmmakers spend so much time making noise that they forget to build suspense. Paul Haslinger’s irritating score has perhaps the greatest overuse of suspended cymbal rolls in film history,...

There's a scene in which a pervy police officer sneakily cops a feel of Christina Ricci's very nude and very cold body that pretty much sums up Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo's debut feature, the unnervingly creepy "After.Life." I mean, the writer-director couldn't possibly be serious about a movie in which a mortician named Eliot addresses the corpses he's fixing up as "you people" -- and gently complains they're "in denial" about being dead. Eliot is played by the great Liam Neeson with considerably more restraint than his concurrent role as...

Horror is such a male dominated genre, it's always refreshing to talk to a female horror director and I always jump at the chance when the opportunity arises. Such was the case with Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo and her chilling thriller After.Life which hits theaters tomorrow from Anchor Bay. We took some time to chat with Agnieszka about her A-list cast, being influenced by Polanski and Argento and why death scares her so much. FEARnet: Can you tell us how After.Life, your first feature length film came about? Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo: I was still in school, I made Pâté my freshman year, and it won a bunch of awards and opened many doors for me. I got an agent very quickly, and I was offered stuff...

Title: After.Life Directed By: Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo Starring: Christina Ricci, Justin Long, Liam Neeson, Chandler Canterbury Everyone wonders what happens when you die. The fact that nobody knows the answer turns the concept of passing on into an everlasting goldmine of opportunity for the film industry. You can revisit the subject over and over and always come up with something new. After.Life certainly proposes a novel scenario, but bogs it down with cliche filmmaking techniques so much, you’ll be hoping we all just die and go to heaven; end of story. Christina Ricci plays Anna, a somewhat happy teacher in a somewhat happy relationship. Her boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) is kind, caring and, most [...]...

Just when an editorial was coming to mind lamenting the absence of female directors in horror, in comes Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, an eager, talkative Nyu grad whose short film earned kudos and propelled her into the director's seat on After.Life , a confidently made psychological thriller starring Christina Ricci, Liam Neeson, Justin Long and Josh Charles. Here, Ricci is faced with relationship lethargy and after a spat with her fella (Long) she winds up in a car wreck and wakes up on the slab in Eliot (Neeson) Deacon's funeral home. Is she dead? It seems so, however, Eliot speaks and interacts with her. So what's the deal? We turn to the young director of the film to learn more. It’s a very rare occurrence that this writer has the opportunity to speak with female directors in the horror genre, which is why I was very happy to interview Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo about her upcoming supernatural thriller After.Life, which hits theaters in limited release this Friday courtesy of Anchor Bay.
Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s own personal journey to get After.Life made is compelling enough to be its very own movie. The young director came to the United States from Warsaw to study film at Nyu, and during her freshman year at the University she made her presence as an up-and-coming storyteller felt immediately. Pate, a short film she did for Nyu, was selected to debut during the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Wojtowicz-Vosloo spoke about how Pate’s involvement in the prestigious festival changed her life forever.

After.Life is one of those creepy films that sets up a certain reality and then simply builds on it, accruing suspense and chills as it goes. Alternatively, you could look at this feature debut by director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo as contrived horror: an easily unraveled premise which, in retrospect, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I guess it depends on what you're in the mood for. Inevitably, however, the latter overtakes the former because the script by Wojtowicz-Vosloo and Paul Vosloo can't help painting itself into a corner. If you can swing with the vision being built by Wojtowicz-Vosloo (typing that name actually makes me appreciate the pretentious moniker McG), then After.Life is a modest and effective little tale, one that is unafraid to take its time and wring the maximum flavor out of each carefully crafted moment. The film stars Christina Ricci...

As Hollywood consistently scrambles to create the “feel-good movie of the year,” sometimes there’s nothing more life-affirming than horror. After all, Jigsaw, in his own warped and brutal way, has been teaching victims and audiences to appreciate what they’ve got for six years now. On April 9, Anchor Bay is set to give limited theatrical release to Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s After.Life, and while this film is nothing like Saw—or much else to come out of the genre lately—it should spark discussion and debate in viewers’ minds about how much they’re actually living.

Last week, MTV debuted an exclusive poster for "After.Life," a new horror/thriller from director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo. Christina Ricci stars as a young woman who dies in a car accident, only to wake up in the funeral parlor with the mortician (Liam Neeson) claiming that he can help her move on to the afterlife. The deceased's boyfriend (Justin Long) thinks something fishy is going on though, and it looks like he's right.
This trailer arrived sometime last week, but it's pretty cool and the movie's got a solid cast, so I felt it deserved another look here.

After.Life is moving towards a confirmed April 9th release date and now the first trailer is available for critique. In the trailer the central characters Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), and Paul (Justin Long) are shown relating to one character's possible demise. But is she really dead, or part of a devious plan? This is the core plotline that is explored in After.Life and the answer will not be released until the end, guaranteed. Leave your own comments and expectations about the film below.

Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo's upcoming horror thriller "After.Life" just got a trailer, and you can check it out below. The film is now on track to open in theaters April 9, 2010 via Anchor Bay. Liam Neeson, Christina Ricci, Justin Long and Josh Charles star.
The flick centers on a young woman (Ricci) caught between life and death. A funeral director (Neeson) appears to have the gift of transitioning the dead, but may be intent on burying her alive. Only her boyfriend (Long), who is convinced she's not dead, can help her.
I'm not quite sure how to feel about "After.Life" at this stage. It's definitely not a mainstream release, but there are elements in this trailer I admit I enjoyed. The cast seems solid enough, and the film seems visually pleasing as well. The story? I'm not quite convinced yet.

Earlier this week, Tk ruminated on After.Life from relative newbie director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, a heady dark thriller with a fascinating premise: a woman wakes up from a carwreck in a funeral home only to have the funeral director try to convince her that she's passing on to the next life and only he can see her. What makes it awesome is that you're not really sure if he's full of shit or if it's all true.
They've finally released a trailer, and I gotta say, I'm less convinced than I was with Tk's assessment last week. This kinda of confirms the poster as spoiling everything that sounded awesome about the project. I'll admit, with Liam Neeson on a mean streak -- presuming we all allow ourselves to bow reverently when he bellows "Release the Kraken!" -- he's in full blown Darkman rage mode here. Which was a Sam Raimi flick.

Apple just released the first official trailer for the suspense thriller After.Life starring Liam Neeson, Justin Long and Christina Ricci. The film seems pretty unique and different from most thrillers about the afterlife, not giving to much away from the coolness of the trailer, it almost seems as if Neeson is very serial killer like but that Ricci seems to be caught in and out of flux between death and life. Ricci plays the lead role of Anna whereas Justin Long plays her grief stricken boyfriend Paul. Neeson plays the funeral home director Elliot Deacon.
The film is written and directed by Polish filmmaker and Nyu Film School graduate Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo. Anchor Bay Films will be bringing After.Life to very limited theaters starting on April 9.

Anchor Bay has debuted the official trailer (via Apple) for their upcoming thriller After.Life starring Liam Neeson, Christina Ricci and Justin Long. The concept for this is pretty damn unique and it's easy to get from watching the trailer, so I won't say much so you can enjoy the reveal. If I had to make a quick comparison, this looks like a dark intense look at the life/afterlife balance as also seen in The Lovely Bones. I'm actually kind of interested in checking this out, mainly because of Neeson. What about you?
