As the producers of Disney‘s Wish, Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones say that every aspect of the film was inspired by each Disney animated film for the past 100 years. This included the animation style, the character of Star, and especially the villainous turn of Magnifico.
Wish follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young girl who disagrees with how the kingdom’s ruler Magnifico (Chris Pine) treats the wishes of her fellow citizens. She wishes upon a star for change, but is surprised when that star comes down from the sky to answer her call. Even though Wish brings back the idea of the traditional villain, it was important for Magnifico to still stand out and have that turn from hero to villain.
‘Wish’, from left: Star, Asha (voice: Ariana DeBose), Valentino (voice: Akan Tudyk)
Deadline: Where did the story come from?
Peter Del Vecho: It actually came from Jennifer Lee.

Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley and Christian Convery are set to be a part of the all-star ensemble cast in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein at Netflix. Elordi will play the iconic monster, replacing Andrew Garfield, who fell out due to strike postponements that led to scheduling conflicts.
Deadline broke the news last year that Oscar Isaac, who will play Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth are set to star in the pic.
Del Toro is writing, directing and producing alongside J. Miles Dale, who served as a producer on del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix. The classic Mary Shelley novel follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Roberto Benigni, whose film “Life Is Beautiful” won three Oscars in 1999, has come out of the woodwork to support Matteo Garrone’s Golden Globe-nominated “Io Capitano,” which is Italy’s current Oscar candidate for best international feature film.
The revered yet reclusive Italian actor/director, whose most recent big screen role is playing Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s hit 2019 live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio,” is clearly a big fan of “Io Capitano” (the title translates to “Me Captain”). The movie narrates the Homeric journey of two young African men, Seydou and Moussa, who decide to leave Dakar to reach Europe.
Garrone’s immigration drama realistically depicts their plight through the pitfalls of the desert, the horrors of detention centers in Libya and the dangers of the sea. Variety critic Guy Lodge in his review called “Io Capitano” the director’s “most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since Garrone’s international breakthrough with ‘Gomorrah’ 15 years ago.

Hey, "The Challenge USA" fans. Tonight, September 21, 2023, another new episode of The Challenge USA's current season 2 did hit the air, and we saw not 1, but 2 more people get eliminated in this double elimination episode. Tonight's new episode kicked off with Desi telling the private cams, "I don't know where Chris' head is at." Chris told the private cams, "I will take ownership for how I messed up." Wes told the private cams, "Josh will never be a rival or threat for me, but he sure is trying so hard like Pinocchio trying so hard to be a real boy." After all of that, host Tj Lavin showed up with the new individual challenge. It was titled, "Go The Distance." It was played in 2 heats. During it, the contestants had to run and jump off a platform surrounded by water to grab a baton that was hanging in mid-air.

Lies are a dime a dozen in The Challenge house and sometimes those lies can destroy real-life friendships.
Before we get into Wednesday’s major blindside, we see a conversation Chris has with some of the Survivor women. There’s still a big divide between the group — most notably between Chris, and Chanelle and Michaela. Despite the fact that they’re now having open communication about rebuilding trust, the jury’s still out on whether the former castaways can actually mend their broken fences.

People often refer to a film being "dumped on Netflix" as a pejorative, despite the fact the landscape of entertainment has evolved well beyond a non-theatrical release being a sign of lesser quality. The streamer has distributed some genuinely incredible films, many of which have already been deemed worthy of a physical release treatment by the Criterion Collection, including "Beasts of No Nation," "Okja," "Roma," "The Irishman," "Marriage Story," "Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese," "Dick Johnson is Dead," "The Power of the Dog," and if we're counting international distribution, "Uncut Gems."
And now, the best Netflix film of 2022 and the reigning Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature, "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," is joining that elusive club.
A reborn take on Carlo Collodi's classic character of the same name, "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" is a marvel of stop-motion animation and arguably the definitive adaptation of the tale.

You play as P, a puppet who must fight his way through the city on his unrelenting journey to find Geppetto and finally become human.

Hayao Miyazaki’s animated The Boy and the Heron earned brief and polite applause after it opened the Toronto Film Festival with visual beauty and deep philosophical messages on screen, but without the draw of red carpet glitz from Hollywood A-listers.
The Japanese anime legend was a no-show in Toronto for the international premiere, with Studio Ghibli instead represented by executive Junichi Nishioka. And Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro helped introduce Miyazaki’s latest animation film as he made a surprise appearance on stage in front of the first-night audience at Roy Thomson Hall.
“He may be the greatest director of animation ever,” the Pinocchio director said as he compared Miyazaki to Van Gogh and Mozart as an artistic genius. “You are lucky to be able to see (The Boy and the Heron) for the first time outside its country of origin,” del Toro added.

For all the major films from established, auteur directors in the 2023 Venice Film Festival’s main competition (David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Sofia Coppela’s Priscilla and Michael Mann’s Ferrari, to name just a few), when he made the official lineup announcement on July 31, festival director Alberto Barbera reserved his lengthiest praise for a small film from Germany.
So enthused was Barbera for Timm Kröger’s second feature The Theory of Everything — a black-and-white Hitchcockian melodrama set in a 5-star hotel in the Swiss Alps (and a “kind of” sequel to his 2014 debut The Council of Birds) — that he claimed it was one of the very first films selected to compete for this year’s Golden Lion.

The director of the brutally bleak Gomorrah has turned his lens on migration, casting two newcomers in a nuanced look at a small-boats crossing. But will his young protagonists fare any better than his wannabe gangsters?
Italian director Matteo Garrone is a reliable crusher of hopes and aspirations. In his 2008 breakthrough crime drama Gomorrah, two fresh-faced Neapolitan youngsters aspire to emulate the mobsters they’ve seen portrayed in American gangster movies: they end up being shot by a bunch of pot-bellied mafia grandpas in flip-flops, and carted off by a digger.
Garrone’s 2019 retelling of Pinocchio had the titular wooden boy join a caravan of children headed for a mythical Land of Toys – only to be transformed into a donkey, crippled in a circus show, and thrown into the sea. Wide-eyed boys who dare to dream ending up as landfill is such a persistent theme in the 54-year-old Roman film-maker’s works,...

“After Yang” takes place far enough in the future that it doesn’t seem unusual for a family to have acquired a virtual big brother for their adopted Chinese daughter. The robot — or “techno-sapien,” as such advanced appliances are politely referred to in the race-blind, android-accepting society writer-director Kogonada neatly imagines — has ceased to function, and the man of the house (Colin Farrell) has the tricky task of getting him fixed. You can’t flush a surrogate sibling the way you might a dead goldfish, but tinkering with it yields profound, thought-provoking results for the family, and audiences too, in this subtly crafted sci-fi parable.
Liberally adapted from a short story by Alexander Weinstein, “After Yang” doesn’t oversell the conceptual stuff, the way a Philip K. Dick project might. Kogonada uses innovation not to alarm, but as license to ruminate on how certain human functions work, among them memory,...

In Annette, a provocative comedian (Adam Driver) and renowned opera singer (Marion Cotillard) fall in love and have a gifted child. Written and composed by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks, the singular rock band that formed in the early 1970s, the musical is directed by Leos Carax, making his long-awaited return with his first feature since Holy Motors in 2012. (The Maels reached out after Carax used one of their songs in that film.) And though a dyed-in-the-wool collaboration, it remains an unmistakably Caraxian film—not long after Sparks’ overture (“This is the start!” goes the refrain) does the director dip into his own back catalog: a motorbike, shot from low, tearing down an illuminated tunnel at night; glistening limousines; nods to Jean Vigo and Melville; eroticism; lots of cigarettes. It really has been too long.

The fact that we don’t have a Hellboy 3 is one of the great tragedies of comic book cinema. Director Guillermo del Toro held onto his plans for a closer to his trilogy based on the Dark Horse Comics hero for years before it was ultimately decided to reboot the franchise. The result was last year’s relaunch starring David Harbour, and it’s fair to say no one’s clamoring for a sequel, let alone a trilogy, to that movie, given that it was a box office and critical bomb.
The only way to save the brand, then, is surely to do what should have been done in the first place and get del Toro and his leading man Ron Perlman back to make their final chapter. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for some news on that front, but this awesome new fan trailer gives us an idea of how it might go down.

Disney has had enormous success with their live-action adaptations of animated classics. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King were all monster hits and more recently, Mulan performed extremely well on the Disney+ Premier Access service. If you’re a fan of these, then the future is bright, with The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bambi and Hercules all at various stages of development (among many other sequels and spinoffs).

The fascinations of Dennis Kelly are worth paying attention to. A decade ago, the playwright and screenwriter was kept up at night by the looming shadow of overpopulation and global resource scarcity. He channelled that concern into Channel 4’s Utopia, a global pandemic conspiracy thriller that in 2020, could hardly be more timely.
Before that, Kelly’s plays were preoccupied with the suspicion of outsiders fostered by the so-called War on Terror, from which you might draw a straight line to Brexit and Trump. You could call his work a barometer for crisis, pointing audiences towards the thing we need to worry about next.
Kelly’s latest project, he tells Den of Geek, was driven by a need to explore the reality-distorting effects of grief, and concern about growing isolationism. The Third Day starts as the story of Sam (Jude Law), a man sucked into the mysterious ways of a strange British island.

In 2018 the archive published 720,000 images from the City’s 1940 tax photo project. Between 1939 and 1941, the City’s Tax Department had collaborated with the Works Progress Administration (Wpa) to take photographs of every single house and building in the five boroughs of New York City, providing an unprecedented record of the city at a moment in time.

Guillermo del Toro recently unveiled new details for his passion project based on the “Pinocchio” fable, a dark take on the boy puppet for Netflix. At the same time however, Disney is still plotting its live-action remake of “Pinocchio,” meaning there could be two very different versions of the same story on screen in the near future. Those two dueling projects wouldn’t be the first example of twin movies arriving within months or weeks of one another. Sometimes it’s because of studios racing to adapt a popular IP or moment in history, because of scripts that float all across town or because of sheer coincidence. But we’ve had years with two mall cop movies, two movies about terrorist attacks on the White House or two movies about talking bugs and fish. Here are some other notable twin movies.

Guillermo del Toro has something of a reputation for signing on to a whole host of projects that never get made, and while his long-gestating adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness came perilously close to getting in front of cameras before the plug was pulled, there’s been plenty of others that were announced and quickly vanished into the ether, never to be mentioned again.
In fact, despite his status as one of Hollywood’s most prominent auteurs, del Toro has only directed three movies in the twelve years since Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and they all suffered from very different fates. Pacific Rim was saved from box office disaster by a strong showing in China, gothic horror Crimson Peak sank without a trace and The Shape of Water saw him land the Academy Award for Best Director.

Netflix has officially unveiled the cast of director Guillermo del Toro’s rendition of classic tale Pinocchio; an impressive lineup that’s notably highlighted by A-listers such as Cate Blanchett, Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton.
The film will utilize stop-motion as the means to update the often-adapted tale famously conveyed by author Carlo Collodi’s 1883 serial story collection, The Adventures of Pinocchio, and, of course, Disney’s iconic, culturally-cemented 1940 animated Pinocchio film. Additionally, the plot will carry some newfound historical gravitas by moving the story’s traditional time setting to a World War II-era backdrop, focusing on the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, showcasing what the logline calls “a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.”

Drawing on the original children’s story for his new live-action version, the Gomorrah director combines sentimentality and the grotesque in a unique way
There is something rich and strange and generous in Matteo Garrone’s new live-action version of the Pinocchio story, for which the director and his co-screenwriter Massimo Ceccherini have gone right back to the original 1883 children’s tale by Carlo Collodi. They have given us a story that combines sentimentality and grotesqueness in a really startling way. It looks like a horror film. This Pinocchio could almost have one of the stories that Garrone dramatised in his freaky-fabular movie Tale of Tales, and the story is very different from the legendary 1940 Disney musical version – without which, admittedly, no one would care about any new remake or reinvention.
Walt Disney, for example, never had Pinocchio being brutally hanged from a tree by two swindlers who wanted to rob him.

It should be pretty obvious that it was only a matter of time before Pinocchio was looked at for a live-action treatment, but wondering how it’s going to go is kind of hard to imagine at this point since it could be a visual treat or it could be something kind of creepy. Keep in mind that movies with talking dolls haven’t always been seen as cute and charming, but hopefully Disney can do something with this one that will make it appear less unnerving and magical in the same way that the animated version was. As far as casting

If we’ve learned anything recently, it’s that Disney can’t stop and won’t stop shuffling through their extensive back catalogue of animated films until every single one receives the live-action treatment. Indeed, the studio’s upcoming slate is packed with projects that will be familiar to longtime fans of the Mouse House and one of them, of course, is Pinocchio.
For those unfamiliar with the story – though honestly, how many people haven’t seen Disney’s animated classic or at least heard the tale? – we first met the titular character in 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio, which told the story of a young boy made out of wood who was brought to life by a fairy. He wanted nothing more than to become a real boy but to do so, he had to prove himself to be “brave, truthful and unselfish.”

Exclusive: After earning an Oscar nomination for playing Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tom Hanks is zeroing in on another children’s favorite. We are hearing that he is in early negotiations to play Geppetto in Disney and Robert Zemeckis’ live-action retelling of Pinocchio.
Although insiders say negotiations are very early, we hear that after reading the script, Hanks has reached out to Zemeckis to let him know he wants to do the film. Disney has always longed for Hanks to play the woodcarver, having approached him years ago when Paul King was attached to direct. That deal was never made, but given Hanks and Zemeckis’ long-standing relationship going back to when they both won Oscars for their work on Forrest Gump, this seems more likely to move forward.

This review of all six episodes is spoiler-free.
If proof were needed that TV drama can be anything it wants these days, Little Birds is it. The Sky Atlantic series is a confection of wild ingredients – glamour, satire, feminist fantasy, postcolonial politics, espionage noir, sex, violence and comedy. It’s a heady mix, not all of which coheres but which leaves you with unforgettable images and a distinct sense of having been transported.
Set in 1955 Tangier, the six-part series is inspired by a collection of erotic short stories written in the 1940s by Cuban-French author Anais Nin. It’s not strictly an adaptation, as the characters, setting and the plot – such as it is – are largely the invention of writer and artist Sophia Al-Maria. "I don't want to be a puppet..." Vertigo Releasing from the UK has debuted a new trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a full cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. This version has been dubbed into English for the film's UK release. Early reviews have been quite mixed - but if you think it looks interesting, it's worth renting at least. Here's the full UK...

Alita: Battle Angel is a science fiction blockbuster that came out in 2019. Since its release, thousands of fans have pleaded for a sequel. With more than two years passed and no official announcement of future plans save for a potential spinoff though, it seems increasingly likely that the series may be on the shelf for a while longer, much to the chagrin of its loyal followers.
Still, that hasn’t stopped the fanbase from continuing to push for another movie and they’ve now taken Twitter to – once again – voice their opinion that Fox should absolutely produce a follow-up to their 2019 tentpole. Together, their messages form a chorus that praises the film for its relatable characters, stellar action sequences and impressive use of CGI technology.

The Flesh and the Fiends lives up to its name and then some. The setting is Scotland but the squalid streets and charnel houses suggest Dickens’ London at its bleakest. Everything is for sale here, the fleshy whores of the cathouses and the fiends who haunt them. On the other side of the tracks lives Robert Knox, a respected anatomist at Edinburgh University who pays for his flesh too – the bodies necessary for his livelihood are in scarce supply and grave robbers William Burke and William Hare are ready to deliver.
Venerated by his students while castigated by old guard medicos, the forward-thinking Knox is a formidable presence at the podium with only one thing to mar his handsome profile, a blind eye.
