Before he became known as the sicko behind the "Terrifier" franchise, writer, director, and editor, Damien Leone was just a 12-year-old kid studying documentaries about the "Thriller" music video and legendary makeup artist Tom Savini. As Leone told Dread Central, "Those two VHSes were the first time I ever saw makeup artists creating monsters and zombies." He says he watched the behind-the-scenes footage around age eight, and was teaching himself to emulate them by age 12. Decades later, he ended up responsible for the makeup behind one of the creepiest monster designs in recent horror history: Art the Clown.

When Terrifier 2 was released in theaters, much of the conversation surrounding it was devoted to its gruesome practical effects, insane levels of violence and gore, and audience reactions that included vomiting and fainting on a level not reported since the release of The Exorcist nearly fifty years before. It was being sold as a movie that would test the mettle of even the most hardened horror fan, almost like a dare, and I was excited to take that challenge. When I settled into my seat a couple weeks later, I expected to be grossed out old school, to paraphrase Stephen King’s Twitter review of the film. What I did not expect was for memories of junior high confirmation and college religion classes to be awakened. I am no theologian, but I have read and studied the Bible throughout much of my life and familiarized myself with many of...

Earlier this year, Kevin Smith purchased the movie theatre he used to go to in his youth, the Atlantic Moviehouse at 82 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and turned it into Smodcastle Cinemas. Last month, Bill MacKay (@Barbarian_Pug on Twitter) tweeted out the idea of Smith hosting a Terrifier double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas, with director and cast Q&As… and Smith quickly turned that idea into a reality! There will indeed be a Terrifier and Terrifier 2 double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas on December 10th, starting at 7pm, and tickets are available at This Link. The price to attend the double feature will make a lot of sense to Smith fans: it’s 37 dollars.
Smith will be moderating Q&As with the cast and crew for both of the films.
On December 10th!
Come get scared shitless at @SmodCinemas when we host the cast & crew of @TerrifierFilm!

The Halloween season may be behind us, but "Terrifier 2" fever is still going strong. For well over a month, the hardcore splatter flick has become a box office sensation in the world of independent horror, along with ushering in the era of the MegaSlasher, according to Mike Flanagan. When it comes to the killer whose presence has garnered the most attention and disgust this year, look no further than the sadistic Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton).
In the pantheon of killer clowns, Art makes Pennywise's approach look like child's play. When Art comes for you, there's a 90 percent chance you're not making it out of the encounter alive, let alone with all of your skin intact. The pantomime slasher approaches his kills as if it's about to be the funniest thing he's done all week. Thornton has even talked about...

There's sleeper hits and then there's slicer hits. Ultra-gory clown slasher "Terrifier 2" is one of the latter: the independently made, low-budget film surprised moviegoers this month when it expertly sliced its way through the box office. Along the way, it earned a good chunk of change, a positive response from horror fans, and a reputation as one of a handful of unrated scary movies that could very well make you physically ill. Despite the reports of ambulances hauling away overwhelmed viewers, "Terrifier 2" mostly made headlines for the right reason: as a sequel that critics say outshined -- and outsplattered -- the original.
So, naturally, it was only a matter of time before writer-director Damien Leon started getting questions about continuing the series. Ahead of the film's public release, as positive word-of-mouth from an early screening had already been spreading, /Film's Ryan Scott asked Leon about whether a third...

When you reflect on the slasher villains we accept as mascots of the genre, it's fascinating to see how far the sinister Art the Clown has come from his indie roots. The pantomime slasher initially started out as a creepy idea in director Damien Leone's 2008 short film "The 9th Circle," and has since become the kind of headline sensation that would make William Castle smile. From anthology antagonist ("All Hallows' Eve") to the star of his own film series, it's safe to say that Art's reign of terror is far from over.
It's pretty astounding how Leone manages to capture the sickening grime of grindhouse horror, where the violence is pushed to an extreme degree. It walks the line between being horrifically gruesome and absurdly funny. Once Art the Clown gets going, he becomes a relentless monster, unlike anything you've ever seen.

Going into its fourth week in theaters, "Terrifier 2" continues to hold strong at the box office. The widespread reports of fainting and vomiting have only emboldened curious folks outside of the horror bubble to come and see what all of the fuss is about. Thankfully, the inadvertent William Castle-esque marketing draw is not a case of hyperbole. The gore effects of the slasher sequel are no joke, and folks are quickly finding out.
Where Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) was at once familiar to just the horror crowd, the killer clown and his demented grimace have quickly landed a spot among the slasher greats. The staggeringly impressive makeup greatly contributes to Thornton's committed performance. He sells every bit of the grindhouse era brutality through the art of pantomime, which makes every body mutilation caused by Art much more unsettling.

Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) may have met his match in Sienna (Lauren Lavera) and her younger brother Jonathan (Elliot Fullam), but he’s not facing them alone.
Terrifier 2, now playing in theaters across the country this weekend, gives Art a mysterious new ally in the Little Pale Girl (Amelie McLain).
Writer/Director Damien Leone and David Howard Thornton spoke with Bloody Disgusting about Art’s new friend and the tremendous performance behind the character.

Leone shares where the Pale Girl came from and how the Terrifier fandom evolved her:
“She’s been this secret that we’ve been dying to speak about because she is so exciting. I always had this idea that when I was going to resurrect Art, there would be this physical apparition. It wasn’t just going to be this evil force, or whatever brought him back. I wanted it to be a character.

Plot: Homicidal maniac Art the Clown returns to ruin another Halloween – and this time he seems destined to clash with a young woman named Sienna, who is celebrating the holiday in an angel warrior costume.
Review: Writer/director Damien Leone has been telling stories that involve his maniacal creation Art the Clown ever since shooting a short film called The 9th Circle back in 2006. A short that ended up being one of the segments in his 2013 anthology film All Hallows’ Eve, which had Art or references to Art dispersed throughout its 83 minute running time. The character really captured the horror community’s heart and imagination when Leone made the 2016 feature Terrifier, a simple slasher that mostly took place in one location and featured Art making a mess of several people over the course of its 84 minutes. Now Art is back in Terrifier 2 – and the fact that Leone has already...

Following a couple festival screenings, writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 is scheduled to receive a nationwide theatrical release, courtesy of Cinedigm, in partnership with Iconic Events, on October 6th. (Tickets are available for purchase at Terrifier2TheMovie.com.) But while most Terrifier fans haven’t had a chance to see the sequel yet, Leone is already plotting Terrifier 3.
Speaking with Slash Film, Leone said, “I basically have a structure for Terrifier 3 already. Right now, I would like to just tell a solid story where it has a nice arc for my heroes, my villains, it’s complete. So a three is, I can almost guarantee a part three. After that? We’ll see if there’s anything left and if the fans still are still accepting of this character and this franchise.“
