Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki is 83; because of this and his own past flirtations with retirement, some morbid critics are a bit too eager to look at how each new Miyazaki film would serve as his career capstone.
I'm going to keep such thoughts to a minimum, but Miyazaki's latest film, 2023's "The Boy and the Heron", couldn't have been made by anyone but a man aware he's aging. Set in Japan during World War II, the movie centers on young Mahito, who must reckon with the loss of his mother as he falls into a Lewis Carroll-style fantasy world held together by its elderly creator.
"The Boy and the Heron" won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars earlier this year (which it totally deserved). If you haven't seen it yet, don't fret. U.S. distributor GKids has announced the home media release date for the film — including a Blu-ray release date.

Before diving into My Hero Academia Season 7 we kicked things off with four recap episodes ( My Hero Academia: Memories ). This has allowed us to reminisce about everything that’s happened so far. Thinking about the early days of Izuku Midoriya doing everything he could to prove that “Deku is the name of the hero” got me thinking about all the anime openings from the series and how they’re the perfect way to show the shift from “kid with a dream” to “kid facing the harsh realities of that dream.” To me, anime openings tell a story, working as a preview of what to expect from the series you’re about to watch. Whether it’s through the visuals or the lyrics (whether we realize it or not when we first watch it), anime openings are a big component of the anime-watching experience. Multiple Jujutsu sorcerers have come and gone, but none were strong enough to end Ryomen Sukuna’s terror. The fans are hoping to see Yuji Itadori get a power-up soon.
Jujutsu Kaisen has often made headlines with positive as well as negative reasons. While the positive reasons are mainly related to the anime and manga, the negative reasons are caused by the mangaka. During a press conference conducted following The Boy And The Heron’s big win at the Oscars, Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli president, shed light on the unconventional marketing strategy adopted for the film.
In his address, Suzuki provided insight into the decision to not promote the film, attributing it to Miyazaki’s desire for a quiet release. Suzuki stated, “Hayao Miyazaki has dedicated his life to Studio Ghibli. It was his wish to release his last film quietly, without much fanfare.“
While acknowledging the challenges posed by the lack of publicity, Suzuki remained steadfast in his support for Miyazaki’s creative integrity.
“It was a nuisance for the people involved, but I certainly thought that Miyazaki’s hard work would gain their understanding. I didn’t want to put him in an environment where he had to do a lot of publicity,” he expressed.

The anime fans were eagerly waiting for the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards result. Anime like Jujutsju Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Oshi no Ko, etc., dominated the award ceremony with multiple award wins. Jujutsu Kaisen won the most, with eleven awards. Chainsaw Man season one had a few nominations, but it could not perform as the fans had hoped. Denji and Pochita’s friendship was not strong enough.
But there was a certain category that the fans had hoped for a different result. During the award ceremony, Jujutsu Kaisen won the Best Opening Sequence award. Even though fans voted it to be the best, many believe that it would have been given to Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man’s opening theme broke a record that even One Piece failed to achieve.
Chainsaw Man’s Opening Theme is Pure Gold Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man season one had mixed reviews, but the opening theme was liked by all.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Michael Sinterniklaas, the voice director of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron English dub revealed that he was initially skeptical about casting Robert Pattinson as Heron, as it was a role that was complicated and nuanced.
Despite recognizing Pattinson as a fine actor, Sinterniklaas felt that there was nothing in his body of work to suggest he could tackle such a challenging role.
However, Pattinson quickly dispelled any doubts during a visit to the studio in Los Angeles. Sinterniklaas recounted the moment when Pattinson confidently approached him, saying, “Ok, I’ve been thinking about this role and I recorded some stuff. Do you want to hear it?” Pattinson then played recordings from the Memos app on his iPhone, revealing a voice that perfectly captured the essence of the character.
This greatly impressed Sinterniklaas.
“Oh, bingo, you’ve already got the character,” the director exclaimed.

At long last, we are now in the month when a new Hayao Miyazaki film will arrive in the United States. While his long-awaited animation The Boy and the Heron won’t officially get a wide release until December 8, those in NYC will get an early look timed with Thanksgiving. Ahead of the release, which will feature both the original Japanese and English language versions, new footage from the film has arrived courtesy of the music video for Kenshi Yonezu’s theme song “Spinning Globe.”
Ethan Vestby said in his TIFF review, “What defines The Boy and the Heron is its wistful feeling of looking back. Its form––being atypical to the current direction of animation in his home country is, as a gesture, nostalgic in and of itself––and more importantly content both suggest an elderly man returning to his oldest wounds. The air of “last dance” hangs over every venture into another dimension.

"The Boy and the Heron" was released in Japan back in July, and it had one of the greatest marketing strategies of all time, in my opinion. There was one poster featuring a close-up drawing of a white and blue heron that had oddly human eyes peeking out from its beak. And that was it. No string of publicity stills, no trailers, no TV spots. Nothing. You had a poster, a release date, and that name Hayao Miyazaki, one of the most beloved filmmakers on the planet supposedly making his final film. The gambit paid off, and the film is doing splendidly in Japan.
I was hoping that this marketing tactic would be adopted around the world, but that isn't the case. We now have a few stills from the movie, like the one seen above, and now, we even have a teaser trailer for Miyazaki's latest. As someone who...

After many years of anticipation, Hayao Miyazaki’s long-awaited How Do You Live? finally premiered in Japanese cinemas last Friday following a purposefully non-existent marketing campaign. While we finally got the first plot details and reactions, it looks like the approach worked as the film pulled in around $11.3M million, the second-highest opening weekend gross in the history of Studio Ghibli. Following the Gkids announcement the animation will make its way to U.S. theaters later this year under the title of The Boy and the Heron, the theme song has now been released.
Written and performed by Japanese musician Kenshi Yonezu, the song’s title is “Chikyugi” and is translated to “Spinning Globe.” Yonezu has been inspired by Miyazaki since seeing Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away at a movie theater when he was in elementary school. He even used the manga version of Nausicaä of the Valley of the...

Update: Gkids has announced they’ve acquired the North American rights to the film, which will be released under the title The Boy and the Heron later this year, and will not release any further details or marketing materials at this time. “Hayao Miyazaki is a living legend in filmmaking, as evidenced by his Academy Award win for Spirited Away and his two Oscar nominations for Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises,’” said David Jesteadt, Gkids president. “It’s been ten years since the world has seen a new film from Miyazaki-san, and Gkids is so proud and honored to unveil his latest, highly anticipated masterpiece in North America.”

I love anime opening credits. The best of them distill the strongest qualities of their source material into beautiful, ninety-second chunks of music and animation. Even the worst of them churn up love in my heart. I remember almost nothing about "Nobunagun," but I have a special place in my heart for its outrageous hard-rock theme song "Respect for the Dead Man." The opening guitar riff of "Rewrite," Asian Kung-Fu Generation's theme for "Fullmetal Alchemist," brings back vivid memories of my teenage years. I know that I'm not alone on that, either. "A Cruel Angel's Thesis," the theme song to "Neon Genesis Evangelion," topped Joysound's karaoke rankings for the Heisei period (1992-2019.) "Gurenge," the theme song to "Demon Slayer," has been downloaded over a million times and was even featured in Japan's recent Olympics Closing Ceremonies. The right Anisong can make a lot of money.

Sharpen your teeth, because the highly-anticipated anime adaptation of "Chainsaw Man," Tatsuki Fujimoto's award-winning and extremely popular manga series of the same name is arriving on Crunchyroll next month. Originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, the "Chainsaw Man" anime is directed by Ryū Nakayama, and tells a bleak and nihilistic story about Denji, a teenage boy living with Pochita, a painfully adorable dog err ... chainsaw devil as the two harvest devil corpses to repay the debt of his father.
