Robert Downey Jr. plays Australian actor Kirk Lazarus in his Oscar-nominated role in Tropic Thunder. Downey Jr.’s Lazarus takes the extreme step in Method acting and undergoes pigmentation alteration surgery to play an African-American man. The role was clearly a satire that mocked the extreme lengths some actors were willing to go to for a role. Downey Jr.’s co-star in the film, Danny McBride, revealed how the actor stayed in character the whole time.

Downey Jr.’s portrayal in the film received criticism for donning Blackface, but his acting in the film was praised by many. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year, which he lost to Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight.

Mike Judge‘s science fiction comedy Idiocracy (2006) was one of the funniest movies of the mid-2000s. Idiocracy was one of Hollywood’s futuristic films which felt more like a comedy than a possibility at the time. However, in retrospect and with the turn of events in the world, Mike Judge and Etan Cohen‘s screenplay looks more like a documentary. Idiocracy‘s plot centered around U.S. Army librarian Joe Bauers, who wakes up five centuries into the future after undergoing a botched government hibernation experiment. However, he soon realizes he’s the smartest person in the world after years of evolution and technological advancement...

Jewish horror certainly isn’t new. ‘The Dybbuk,’ a play by S. Ansky about the Jewish folkloric demon, was first performed in 1920. Since, there have been many stories of the mythological nightmare, from stage to screen and otherwise. The dybbuk is named for the word “to cleave” or “to cling,” referencing the demon’s way of latching onto a living body. It’s a soul of a dead person that takes up a living host, possessing them until it is able to accomplish its goal.
Unlike Christian demons we’re used to seeing in films, dybbuks aren’t cohorts of the devil, but souls of the dead who are unable or unwilling to move on due to unfinished business. Movies like The Unborn (2009), The Possession (2012), and Ezra (2017) used the dybbuk, but each fell into a common trap. We won’t spend time tackling the 2003 created “dybbuk box,” but suffice it...

Max Barbakow, the director of the 2020 Sundance comedy darling “Palm Springs,” has found his next film and will direct the comedy “Disaster Wedding” for Warner Bros., an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts is also producing “Disaster Wedding” alongside End Cue’s Andrew Kortschak.
Dave Holstein is rewriting the script for the film from an original draft by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though it’s worth noting that Barbakow’s “Palm Springs” was also about a disastrous wedding that resulted in its two stars becoming trapped in a “Groundhog Day” style continuous time loop repeating the same day over and over.

Following its world debut at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight this May, Kino Lorber has snagged North American distribution rights to “1976,” a gripping Pinochet-era drama directed by Manuela Martelli.
The film is the first feature for Martelli, produced by Chilean writer-directors Omar Zuniga (“The Strong Ones”) and Dominga Sotomayor (“Too Late to Die Young”) for Cinestación, Alejandra Garcia and writer-director Andres Wood (“Violeta Went to Heaven”) for Wood Producciones, and co-produced by Nathalia Videla Peña and Juan Pablo Gugliotta for Argentina’s Magma Cine.
“1976” takes place in a small seaside town where Carmen (Aline Kuppenheim) reflects on her life as she transforms from a side-lined housewife into an integral caretaker. Putting her sanity and the values of her peers on the line, she steps further into uncertainty by aiding a weary and wounded opponent to Pinochet’s regime, Elías (Nicolás Sepúlvda), at her priest’s request.

The Bad Guys
As Spring slowly arrives, the multiplex makes way for a new family-friendly animated feature film. Now, this one’s got an interesting twist, a “spin” on a firmly established trope of the “cartoon conflict’. Well, it’s not a “skewed’ satiric fairy tale or fable but rather goes further back, before the features, to those “much-missed” theatrical shorts. Very often they dealt with a chase, usually a pursuit with a predator animal trying to capture its (not so defenseless) prey. In the world of Looney Tunes, Sylvester is after Tweety while the Coyote was always several steps behind that Roadrunner. But what about shifting the focus from the “heroes” to the “villains”, to a team of “nogoodniks” who somehow want to change? Or do they? Can they really “flip” their “nature” or must they remain The Bad Guys?

This review for “The Bad Guys” was originally published on March 29, 2022.
Billed as “a caper,” there’s something refreshingly old-fashioned and simple about “The Bad Guys.”
No singing, no dancing, no moral lessons — it’s just a cartoon, with fast-talking, wise-cracking animals, lots of silly car chases and a host of fart gags.
Based on the comic books by Australian author Aaron Blabey and riffing on the heist-movie genre, “The Bad Guys” follows a band of bank-robbing villains. They’re not so much Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Ms. Tarantula who, in public penance for their criminal ways, are sworn to go straight. For a bit.
Half the fun is trying to work out who’s doing the voice work. In a knowing nod to the “Ocean’s” movies, the handsome, silver-grey Mr. Wolf is continually being likened in the script to George Clooney,...

Is it truly a marketplace for branded tentpoles and uber low-budget fare at the box office as the pandemic eases? And is everything in between just future programming for a streamer?
Surely if you ask any filmmaker, established or budding, they truly don’t want their art lost to obscurity in a streaming queue, or worse, to have their movie’s demand be tied to algorithm.

DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s original villain movie The Bad Guys looks to do the best out of three with 15 million, while Focus Features’ Robert Eggers’ violent 70M Viking epic The Northman is eyeing between 8M-12M, and Lionsgate’s Nicolas Cage satire The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is...

Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina are among the voices of a ragtag bunch of animal thieves in a derivative yet enjoyable Ocean’s 11-lite
This is Tarantino for ankle-biters with a bit of Ocean’s 11 thrown in: funny, energetic and just smart enough. It’s an animated caper from DreamWorks about a gang of career criminals, crewed by five of the animal kingdom’s worst of the worst: a wolf, shark, snake, piranha and tarantula. Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen, adapting the kids’ books by Aaron Blabey, gives us some tongue-in-cheek comedy, though perhaps not quite enough originality to make it actually memorable.
Leader of the Bad Guys is smooth-talking Mr Wolf. After a series of front-page heists, the Bad Guys are caught red-handed trying to steal a gold statue being awarded to a philanthropic guinea pig. He’s Professor Marmalade, a wet do-gooder beautifully played with a passive-aggressive whine by Richard Ayoade.

It’s a problem that has plagued countless kids’ movies — and more than a few grownup ones — over the course of film history: The villain is conceived and performed with such lip-smacking relish that the nominal hero seems a simpering drag to be around by comparison. Conscious of that perennial imbalance, “The Bad Guys” takes a simple solution and multiplies it, making a sympathetic protagonist of not just one supposedly dastardly antagonist, but several. Taking five anthropomorphised animals generally portrayed as violent terrors in the cartoon world — led by a big bad wolf, no less — and centering them as a chummy, lovable criminal collective, this bouncy debut feature from French animator Pierre Perifel gets a lot of value out of that neat high concept. As it steers them to the right side of the law, however, it still can’t convince us that good guys have more fun.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be directed by Joel Crawford and produced by Mark Swift, the creative team behind Dwa’s 2020 smash The Croods: A New Age, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture – Animated and is the third highest-grossing feature during the pandemic with $158 million.
Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas will again voice the suave feline outlaw, as Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: He has burned through eight of his nine lives, leaving him with only one left. He sets out...

Puss in Boots is back in action. DreamWorks and Universal have set a release date for a sequel to the 2011 animated film “Puss in Boots” starring Antonio Banderas, and it will open in theaters Sept. 23, 2022.
The new film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is directed by “The Croods: A New Age” director Joel Crawford and is a follow-up to 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” which was a spinoff of Antonio Banderas’ swashbuckling cat character from the “Shrek” films.
DreamWorks and Universal have also set a release date for the previously announced adaptation of “The Bad Guys,” which will now open on April 15, 2022.
Banderas will reprise his voice role in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” in a new film that sees Puss having burned through eight of his nine lives. He now sets out on a new epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

HBO has decided to drop two Mike Judge comedy shows that the premium cable network ordered from the “Silicon Valley” co-creator and showrunner in 2019, Variety has confirmed.
The shows were ordered as part of a two-year overall deal that encompassed all forms of television except for animation. The decision comes as Judge has been overseeing the reimagining of “Beavis and Butt-Head” for Comedy Central as part of an animation deal with the ViacomCBS network. The cancelation also arrives as HBO programming president Casey Bloys is refocusing on reviewing programming for both HBO and HBOMax.
The first project, formerly a co-production between HBO and Lionsgate, is titled “Qualityland.” It is based on the novel of the same name by Marc Uwe-King and is about “the story of humanity’s struggle against the tyranny of convenience. But funny,” the official description for the series states. Judge and Josh Lieb were slated to...

Exclusive: HBO has opted not to proceed with comedy series Qualityland and limited comedy series A5, both from Mike Judge.
The premium cable network ordered the two shows as part of a new two-year overall deal the Silicon Valley co-creator signed with the premium cable network in early 2019.
Neither of the shows casting had gotten to a casting stage, and A5 was in early development, so it could potentially be redeveloped elsewhere.
Co-written and executive produced by Judge and Josh Lieb, Qualityland is based on the novel of the same name by Marc-Uwe Kling. Set in the very near future, it’s everything we have now, and more so. It’s the story of humanity’s struggle against the tyranny of convenience. But funny. HBO was to co-produce the series with Lionsgate. It is unclear whether the latter would shop the project elsewhere.
A5 was co-written by Judge and Etan Cohen.
