“Modern Family” has landed a cable run at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS network starting Sept. 25.
The ABC sitcom, which ran for 11 total seasons from 2009 to 2020, will air on TBS for a three-hour block on weekdays — specifically from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The licensing by the cable outlet marks an attempt to bolster its comedy options.
Previously, “Friends” and “Young Sheldon” have occupied the hours that “Modern Family” will run. Both shows will remain on the network. Monday saw longer daily marathons of “The Big Bang Theory” on TBS.
“Our audience continually seeks out popular comedies like ‘Friends,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Modern Family,’ so now that we have all three of these iconic series on TBS, we can build an even bigger, more engaged audience,” said Julie Taylor, chief of Content Strategy & Insights, US Networks Group, Warner Bros. Updated with launch taking effect. Modern Family, which wrapped its highly decorated, 11-season network run last year, is embarking on a significant new streaming chapter via a shared deal with Peacock and Hulu.
Starting today, all 250 episodes of the Emmy-laden sitcom are available on both services after years of only having a limited batch of episodes on Hulu.
Indications from the deal announcement on January 26 are that the go-go streaming market remains in full effect. Sources familiar with the terms said the multi-year acquisition price stretched well into nine figures, consistent with healthy rates for recent half-hours such as Friends, The Office and Seinfeld. Prices have been driven steadily higher by the entry of several new billion-dollar players into the streaming fray in the past year.

In a unique deal, Hulu and Peacock have both acquired the streaming rights to the hit ABC comedy “Modern Family.” All 11 seasons of the Emmy-winning series will be available on both platforms beginning Feb. 3.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Peacock will offer the series in a similar fashion as “The Office.” The first 12 episodes of Season 1 of “Modern Family” will be on the streaming service’s free tier, with the rest behind the paywall, which can cost between $4.99 and $9.99 a month. Comcast and Cox subscribers get the premium tier included in their TV packages.

Well well well, if it isn’t our old friend irony. After a year in which President Donald Trump publicly dismissed Covid-19 as something that was “going to disappear,” saying it “affects virtually nobody” and that it was a “hoax,” he and his wife Melania are now infected. This coming mere days after he mocked his presidential opponent for wearing a mask and after repeatedly holding rallies without proper safety procedures in place. It’d almost be funny… if we weren’t digging graves for 200,000 Americans (and counting!).
The world of Hollywood has, of course, been commenting on the diagnosis and the prevailing mood seems to be less sympathy and more “I told you so” with a sprinkling of “lmao.” Here’s just a selection of the responses:
In this difficult time let's be sure to show @realDonaldTrump the respect he's shown others.

Refresh for updates With a mix of sincere best wishes, karma-is-a-bitch snark, stunned disbelief and saw-it-coming hindsight, Hollywood and the Beltway responded quickly to the late-night news of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump testing positive for Covid-19.
“I am very surprised by the twist ending of ‘2020: Episode 3’ and I don’t see how they will be able to wrap this all up in one more episode,” tweeted actor Sean Gunn.
John Cleese drew some angry responses with his Python-esque sarcasm: “A doctor friend of mine tells me that Covid19 symptoms include delusions of grandeur, compulsive attention-seeking, extreme narcissism…”
In a less humorous mood, Ava DuVernay tweeted, “I hope this changes the discourse around this virus among the people who follow him and don’t give a damn. And in turn, who damn the rest of us. People have lost their lives. Their loved ones. And...

ABC is not going to let its comedy hit Modern Family go quietly as the long-running series enters its 11th and final season.

Modern Family, which also stars Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez, just launched production on the final season and co-creator/exec producer Steve Levitan said they “plan on finishing strong.”

High-profile members of the Writers Guild of America, including Patton Oswalt, David Simon, Shawn Ryan, Michael Schur, John August, Amy Berg, Danny Zuker and many more have gone public with letters formally firing their agents in compliance with the WGA’s order to do so.

It’s official — ABC’s flagship comedy series Modern Family will wrap its run after one more season. The Emmy-winning family comedy has been picked up for an eleventh and final season, the network announced at TCA. I hear it will consist of at least 18 episodes and could expand to 22 episodes.
Modern Family’s renewal was all but assured when the original adult cast, stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara, in December agreed on new deals with producing studio 20th Century Fox TV to return. Since then, the studio also has signed co-creators/executive producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for another season, and also has made new deals with the original kid actors — now all young adults — Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez. I hear some of those cast negotiations came down to the wire, with pacts finally closing overnight.

Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Ariel Dumas apologized yesterday for tweeting about her happiness in helping to ruin Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s life. Considering Kavanaugh had just secured a lifelong gig on the Supreme Court, the “ruined life” tweet was, as Dumas later said, an attempt at sarcasm.
But did Dumas go too far – in apologizing? Many of her fellow comedy writers are coming to her defense. One even pledged “fire and fury” from Dumas’ fellow female comedy writers if the CBS Late Show writer is “financially” punished.

Bill Cosby’s guilty verdict was met with a collective exhale on Thursday as the once-revered comedian’s long fall from grace culminated in a conviction on three counts of aggravated indecent assault.
“Finally some justice for Bill Cosby’s victims. May they find a little #peace today,” director Elizabeth Banks tweeted, using the hashtag “#Guilty” after the verdict came down.
“In a fitting end to Sexual Assault Awareness month, Bill Cosby was found guilty today,” wrote “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi. “Thinking of all the women he traumatized over the past 50 years. As a survivor myself, I know that pain never fully goes away. But I hope that his victims finally feel some semblance of peace.”

Cosby was found guilty by a Pennsylvania jury on Thursday. He was accused by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand of molesting her in 2004 at his home outside of Philadelphia.
The trial was Cosby’s second on charges stemming from Constand’s accusations. The previous trial ended in a mistrial last July, when the jury failed to reach a verdict after five days of deliberations. It follows years of accusations of assault against Cosby, culminating in an bold New Yorker cover story featuring the faces and stories of 35 of his accusers.
“What’s next?My defamation case on behalf of Janice Dickinson against Bill Cosby, which we’ve been fighting and Winning for 3+ years, goes on,” wrote celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom, who represents Dickinson, one of the other accusers who testified against Cosby in his re-trial last week. “Mr. Cosby, I’m looking forward to taking your deposition.”

“Saturday Night Live” writer Katie Rich has disengaged with Twitter, and if you sift through her mentions right now, that’s probably a good thing.
Rich is under fire this week due to a joke she tweeted from her personal account on Friday during the inauguration of President Trump about his young son Barron, which many considered a clear example of crossing a line within the realm of comedy. She later apologized on Twitter, and was suspended from the “SNL” writing staff. (The New York Times has more info, including the joke itself.)

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Interview stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, and in the comedy, North Korea's Kim Jong-Un is assassinated. But the actors need not worry as their famous friends are standing up for them and their right to creative expression.
News: Here is Sony's statement about canceling 'The Interview'
Taking to Twitter, everyone from Judd Apatow to Rob Lowe to Mitt Romney are blasting Sony's decision to cancel the controversial comedy's theatrical release.
I think it is disgraceful that these theaters are not showing The Interview. Will they pull any movie that gets an anonymous threat now?
