With his 2009 musical romance Once, writer-director John Carney laid the groundwork for all of his subsequent films. He has, ever since, been telling stories about adrift musical folk eventually brought together by the intimacy of collaboration. His latest, Flora and Son, essentially doubles down on that commitment by focusing on two relationships built around music, but right away the film feels spread thin as a result.
The film’s central figure is Flora (Eve Hewson), a young single mother in Dublin who’s often out partying rather than caring for Max (Orén Kinlan), the now-teenage son she had before she turned 18. Their relationship is volatile, and their mutual disdain could hardly be more apparent. Flora makes no secret of the relief she feels when she can dump Max on the doorstep of her neck-tattooed ex-husband, Ian (Jack Reynor). Max, in turn, has taken to acting out, and he’s on...

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Flora and Son – the latest music-themed film from director John Carney – at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the result was a 9/10 review you can read at This Link. A wider audience will get their chance to see Flora and Son when it reaches Apple TV+ on September 29th, and with that date just a month away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Robin Hood: Ridley Scott's pseudo historical take on the story of the man who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. In the film, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) is a disillusioned Crusader who decides to go the outlaw route after seeing what's become of his country in his decade-long absence. All the classic character's are there but everything's off. Hood middle aged and surprisingly money hungry, Marian (Cate Blanchett) is now a Lady and the widow of the dead man Robin impersonates. The film lacks the sense of swashbuckling fun that has made the legend of Robin Hood an enduring part of Western culture. As with Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur, a few brava action sequences doesn't make the deconstruction of beloved myths any fun to watch. Also starring Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, and Eileen Atkins.

Once in a while a film comes out of Ireland that seems to upend all the ones that came before it. In 2008 it was the midlands epic "Eden" and the shoestring rock musical "Once" that wowed critics and audiences with their simple but affecting storylines and stellar performances. Then last year Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s chiller "The Eclipse" seemed to invent its own genre. In 2010 the drama that looks unlike anything that’s come out of Ireland before is "My Brothers," currently showing at the Tribeca Film Festival. Written by Irish screenwriter Will Collins, 33, and directed by British man Paul Fraser, 37, it’s a tender story about three young working class Cork brothers who take an impromptu road trip together as they struggle to cope with their father’s imminent death. As storylines go, that may sound like a grim one, but the performances by the young Irish cast...

LONDON -- Tom Collins' Irish-language movie "Kings" has scooped a regal 14 nominations in the race for the fifth annual Irish Film and Television Awards.
Presented by the Irish Film and Television Academy, "Kings" took the most nominations ahead of its closest challenger, Lenny Abrahamson's "Garage", which scored 11.
Both "Kings" and "Garage" will compete for the top film award alongside Julian Jarrold's Jane Austen biopic "Becoming Jane", Richard Attenborough's Northern Irish film "Closing the Ring" and Paddy Breathnach's horror film "Shrooms".
"Kings" and "Garage" also count nominations in the director and script categories.
Colm Meaney ("Kings") and Pat Shortt ("Garage") will battle it out with Cillian Murphy ("Sunshine"), Gabriel Byrne ("Jindabyne") and Hugh O'Conor ("Speed Dating") for the lead actor nod.
"Garage" director Abrahamson and the film's writer, Mark O'Halloran, also each have a second nomination in the director TV and script for television categories, respectively, for the RTE drama "Prosperity", which garnered a total of five television category nominations.
In the television categories, TG4's Irish-language series "The Running Mate" scored eight nominations, as has TV3's primetime period drama "The Tudors". Both titles also have strong acting nominations, including Denis Conway, Don Wycherley and Jonathan Rhys Meyers for the prestigious lead actor television award.
"It has been another strong year for Irish talent with world-class Irish production, and IFTA Academy Members have selected titles across a very interesting mix of genres and styles with the Irish language a strong feature coming through this year across both film and television," IFTA CEO Aine Moriarty said.
The awards will be dished out Feb. 17 at Dublin's Gaiety Theater and broadcast in primetime on RTE One.
