After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.
In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!
Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

The history of Hong Kong martial arts cinema contains many stories based on real life figures. These stories elevate them to almost mythical status as they become something more. Standing head above all the others is the recurring figure of Wong Fei Hung. For modern audiences, the most fondly remembered portrayals are by Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Yet Kwan Tak-hing is probably the one most defined by the role, playing him countless times from the 1950's onwards. “The Skyhawk” is one of the final instances and his last in a leading role. It is also one of the key films in the movement towards the modern martial arts film as transcends the generations with the torch being passed on whist respecting the whole ethos of the character that Wong Fei-hung represents.

In 1970, prominent Hong Kong producers Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho left the legendary Shaw Brothers studio to found the now iconic Golden Harvest. The new studio would grow to dominate the Hong Kong film landscape for the next thirty years, overseeing the rise of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and, of course, the immortal Bruce Lee.
Alongside these male superstars emerged another kung fu hero who has built a lasting cinematic legacy of her own – Angela Mao. Mao starred in Golden Harvest's first feature production, the magical wuxia adventure film “The Angry River” (1971). The film was helmed by the debuting director, Huang Feng, marking the first of nine successful collaborations between Feng and Mao.
Below are listed five of Feng and Mao's most electrifying joint projects, ranging from the bizarre to the brutal:

Though she’s a familiar name to kung fu movie fans, Angela Mao Ying has never had the crossover recognition of contemporaries like Bruce Lee and Sammo Hung. Perhaps this 50th anniversary reissue of two of her films will do something to address that.
Both films in this set date from 1972, and were directed by Huang Feng, but Lady Whirlwind was made and released first. In this, Mao plays Tien Li-Chun, who is on a mission of vengeance against Ling Shih-hua (Chang Yi), who she blames for her sister’s suicide. However, Ling Shih-hua is engaged in a battle with some local gangsters. Tien agrees to spare Ling, but only until he can kill Tung Ku.

Angela Mao and director Huang Feng (The Shaolin Plot) were a superstar pairing that produced an incredible series of top-tier kung-fu classics including Deadly China Doll, When Taekwondo Strikes, and the two films presented here – Hapkido and Lady Whirlwind.
In Hapkido (aka. Lady Kung Fu in the West), a group of martial artists starts their own school to teach the Korean martial art, Hapkido, but a rival Japanese academy attempts to crush them – deeming Hapkido inferior to their Japanese fighting style. Similar to the plot of Bruce Lee’s Fist Of Fury, Hapkido was a huge hit in the West, even briefly beating Lee’s Enter The Dragon at the North American box office.

Set during World War II while Korea is under the Japanese rule, the simple plot here is about Korean rebels who’re willing to give up their lives fighting against the evil invaders. Li Jun Dong (Jhoon Rhee) is their leader and he works as a gardener in a local church. One day, being chased by the Japanese, rebel Jin Zhang Zhi (Carter Wong) seeks shelter in the church. Together, Li and his student Mary (Anne Winton) step in and beat up the attackers who then run away.
Now that the church is not a safe heaven, the three of them take off but the priest stays behind and is captured by the returning Japanese. While checking on the priest’s welfare, Huang Li Chen (Angela Mao) also gets into trouble with them. Li then sets out to rescue Father Louis (Andre Morgan) alone but is outnumbered.

While not the first film to depict such a situation, the Angela Mao-led, Huang Feng-directed “Hapkido” is certainly one of the more enjoyable efforts to depict the time in the early 1930s, when Japan occupied Korea. Filled with fun action scenes and combined with a stellar period setting and a fun, breezy story that recalls the earlier Bruce Lee effort “Fist of Fury,” that makes this one of the best Golden Harvest efforts.
Set in 1934 Korea, Chinese students Kao Yu Ying (Angela Mao), Kao Chang (Carter Wong) and Fan Wei (Sammo Hung) are sent back to their homeland after their training is completed. Attempting to establish a Hapkido school in their hometown, they quickly run into opposition from a Japanese run school led by Toyoda Yaguma (Goro Kumon) who directly opposes their practices and tries to run them out of the town. It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Scream Factory is showing some love to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China with multiple editions (including the standard Collector’s Edition as well as the absolutely gorgeous limited edition Steelbook), and Konga, one of my favorite cult films (thank you Terror in the Aisles!) is headed to Blu on Tuesday, courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

While John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is infinitely quotable thanks to Kurt Russell's performance as the imperfect protagonist Jack Burton, every great reluctant hero needs a great villain, and James Hong's portrayal of the evil Lo Pan gave us a character who is just as memorable as his truck-driving counterpart. With Big Trouble in Little China coming to Blu-ray like never before in a new Collector's Edition on December 3rd from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive bonus feature clip featuring Hong to share with Daily Dead readers!
Taken from "The Soul of Lo Pan" bonus feature on the Big Trouble in Little China Collector's Edition Blu-ray, our exclusive clip below features Hong reflecting on some of his most memorable moments playing Lo Pan, including how Carpenter and his crew used practical effects and ingenuity to pull off Lo Pan's glowing transformation and floating ability.

Few cinematic genres are more polarizing to audiences than that of kung-fu cinema. For those who the genre rubs the right way, these are some of the most exciting and captivating works of pure cinema (bodies interacting with one another through space and time) around, while its detractors frown sternly in the face of its arch choreography and B-movie storylines. However, thanks to The Metrograph and its ongoing Old School Kung Fu Fest (now in its seventh iteration under the leadership of the team at Subway Cinema), these films are finding not only a new home among critics but also new found context within film writ large.
This seventh installment is entitled Wonder Women Of The Martial Arts, or that’s at least the festival’s central theme, as this slate features only films that are led by female performers. Seven films are included here, led most notably by King Hu...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking...

Golden Harvest started in 1970, after Raymond Chow had left Shaw Brothers studios along with producer Leonard Ho and decided to start there own company and go up against the dominance of Shaw Brothers.
Shaw Brothers had been the leading studio for many years, showcasing legendary Directors, Actors and Marital Artists. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho knew they had to come with something big and make a huge noise in the world of cinema and indeed they did just that. They made a few movies in 1971 such as The Angry River, Lady Whirlwind and One Armed Boxer. But one Actor stood out over the rest, showcasing his incredible talent for the first time in a big movie and his name was Bruce Lee. When the Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong, the audience cheered and mobbed Bruce after the movie had ended.

I confess that my first reaction to this news was caught on film and you can now see it in photo form attached to this story. Here's the thing: I am on record as saying that I consider Dwayne Johnson a bit of a natural resource. I don't think the movies he makes are always worthy of his charisma and his genuine talent, but i think he's more than proven himself capable. I am hopeful when he announces a project that it'll be something that is as good as he is. I am also on record as saying that it's exhausting to get worked up about every single remake or sequel or reboot or whatever at this point. The industry has so clearly embraced that as an omnipresent business plan that it is wasted energy. It takes a lot to shake that loose from me now, but maybe this one...

When you have favourite movies it always comes as a surprise when you hear that they bombed on original release, even more of a surprise when you learn that most of its failure was down to being buried by the film companies. Three Chinese martial arts students spend five years in Korea training in the martial art of Hapkido. Korea is under Japanese occupation and after a fight with some Japanese the students are told to leave by their Korean master. Before they go he gives them a final demonstration in the art and some advice which he hopes will help them in the future. Armed with this knowledge they return to China and set up their own martial arts school. Back in China most of the already established martial arts schools in the area welcome the new hapkido school to the community. How ever the local Japanese martial arts school is not so happy to see them, especially when one of the three kicks the crap out of a couple of their students.
The three students turned masters of their own school, are played by kung fu legends Carter Wong, Sammo Hung and Angela Mao.
