When it comes to ghost stories focused on haunted houses my personal favourites are The Haunting and The Legend of Hell House, the psychological scares make them genuinely creepy and most importantly effective. The Haunting of Radcliffe House (also known as Altar) which has recently been released on DVD makes an attempt to scare its audience in classic ways, is it be effective?
When Meg Hamilton (Olivia Hamilton) is asked to renovate Radcliffe Hall she moves her family, including artist husband Alec (Matthew Modine) into the house while she works on it. As she discovers more about the house though including the revelation of a secret room in the attic things gradually push Meg to decide to move out of the house.

Altar, the new horror film written and directed by Nick Willing, starts off strongly as it introduces the location, the lavish house and characters all via some gorgeous cinematography and sweeping shots of the moors.
From there on, strange things begin to occur. It starts off with a rattling window, then continues with ghostly apparitions that haunt the kind family.
It's all very slow-burning stuff and rather effective, with director Nick Willing making good use of lighting and sound design to capture the atmosphere and conjure scares.
The whole film looks, feels and plays out as like a good old-fashioned haunting flick similar to The Amityville Horror.
The main problem with this feature is, aside from some strokes of genius that provide genuinely creepy moment’s, this is one horror that is mostly derivative of what has come before.

Syfy is doing well with its original series, and coming off the back of the popularity, and general awesomeness, of Helix, the network has announced two more series are coming your way.
With zombies now taking over the top spot in the ever-changing monster popularity consciousness, it’s no surprise that we’re getting another series focusing on the undead. Syfy‘s spin is Z Nation, and rather than kicking off with the appearance of the zombies, this one starts years after our zombie plague has already gutted most of humanity. Apparently, when someone immune to the plague finally turns up, we embark upon a quest to reach the other side of the country to hopefully make use of his blood in creating a cure.
There aren’t a lot of details yet, and this is one that will live or die by its cast, but it could be an...

In recent years, Syfy has become better known for shlocky creature features like Sharktopus and Sharknado than high-quality sci-fi/fantasy programming, but the channel has been taking steps over the past few weeks to reclaim its title as the resident channel for sci-fi aficionados. Hot on the heels of ordering a TV adaptation of the Bruce Willis classic 12 Monkeys, green-lighting miniseries Ascension and drama Dominion, and renewing series Helix, Continuum, Lost Girl, Defiance and Haven, Syfy has ordered a miniseries rooted in Greek mythology, titled Olympus.
The 13-episode series will tell the story of a group of brave men and women who banished the gods to “the realm of the unconscious: a place they called the Underworld, or the Kingdom of Hades,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Olympus follows a man named Hero, who grows from a young boy into a brilliant leader capable of taking on the gods themselves.

Neverland
Stars: Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel, Charles Dance, Charlie Rowe, Bob Hoskins, Keira Knightley | Written and Directed by Nick Willing
Peter Pan is the story of childhood’s dream, a place where kids never grow old and every day is a new adventure where the boys get to fight pirates and do as they please and misbehave without parents telling them what to do. Peter is the metaphor for our inner child, nobody wants to truly grow up and be an adult, why would you want that? This is what I find to be the problem with Neverland.
Neverland tries to create a prequel for Peter Pan; it looks at where Peter himself came from and why he is connected to Captain Hook, why Peter can fly and just who Tinker Bell is. To a point this may be interesting but then again, why do we need to know this?...

Chicago – Aficionados of J.M. Barrie movie adaptations will immediately recognize a bit of trivia-worthy casting in Nick Willing’s “Peter Pan” prequel, “Neverland.” Bob Hoskins is cast as Smee, a role he previously inhabited in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook.” I’m not sure why, considering “Hook” isn’t all that fondly remembered, though after sitting through the first half of this tedious slog, I was praying for a cameo by Rufio.
“Neverland” is merely the latest in a series of “too-hip-for-charm” franchise reboots that seem perversely bent on draining beloved fantasies of their childlike wonder. I don’t have a clue what sort of audience member would find this two-part, three-hour miniseries the least bit satisfying. As an adult drama, it’s a childish bore. As children’s fare, it’s dank and dreary. No wonder Peter and his posse of lost boys are so desperate to find a way home.

Before you say, “Wait, this sounds familiar…” your memory serves you right. Syfy aired Nick Willing’s (Alice, Tin Man) version of a Peter Pan origin story, also titled Neverland, just last December. Sony’s project began from a seedling idea from actor Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Dear John), and producers Reid Carolin and Eric Bromberg.
Variety reports that Warrior director Gavin O’Connor is in talks with Sony to direct this project to expand upon J.M. Barrie’s story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman) and Palak Patel will be producing the project through Roth Films while Tatum and Carolin will produce through Iron Horse. O’Connor will be involved with the drafting of the script that Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Color of Night) is working on.
So, I know what you’re thinking. How will this...

You gotta give writer/director Nick Willing credit. He continues to mine public domain works to give them modern day twists and gets Syfy to pay for them. Overall, these have been largely hit or miss affairs which began way back in 2007 with Tin Man, reimagining L. Frank Baum’s Tin woodsman as a sheriff in Oz with Neal McDonough doing his best with weak material. It was still head and shoulders about the god awful 2009 debacle Alice, that proved Willing had no ear to the lyricism of the authors he was pillaging.
Undaunted, thanks to positive ratings from an undiscerning audience, last winter Willing returned with Neverland, a prequel to James Barrie’s Peter Pan. In this version, it all began centuries ago, when the pirate Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) came upon a glowing orb amongst her spoils and when she tired of it and used it for target practice,...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

Nick Willing, the director who brought his own version of classic fairy tales The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderful to the SyFy Channel, turned his pen and camera on Peter Pan for Neverland.
Willing takes some liberties with J.M. Barrie‘s original lost boy story, adding in a touch of Dickens. In the fantasy mini-series, a prequel of sorts of Peter Pan, young orphan Peter (Charlie Rowe, Never Let Me Go) and his gang of pickpockets are magically transported to a world called Neverland, where time stands still. Also along for the ride is the group’s adult caretaker, of sorts, Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans, Anonymous) — guess who he becomes…
In Neverland, the kids and Hook must contend with the deadly pirate Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel, Limitless), who has ruled the seas of the magical...

In this new story, the adventure lies in showing how a young boy became Peter Pan (Charlie Rowe), who discovered he could fly and transport people to another world where time stands still. Joining in Peter’s amazing adventure are his wily mentor James Hook (Rhys Ifans), the devious pirate Captain Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel), a dainty fairy Tinker Bell, a mysterious Dr. Fludd, and Peter’s childhood friends Curly, Tootles, Fox and the Twins. In a recent conference call, stars Charlie Rowe, Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel and writer/director Nick Willing talked about what drew them to Neverland and the adventures they had working on the epic project.

I'm not particularly a fan of the whole Peter Pan story, so I didn't really make it a priority to watch a preview of the upcoming Syfy miniseries "Neverland." Sure, the same people who brought us an excellent retelling of "The Wizard of Oz" as well as a so-so exploration into "Alice in Wonderland" in the form of "Tin Man" and "Alice," were behind it. But still. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to visit Neverland, Capt. Hook, the Lost Boys and everyone else. But I'm glad I did. And when "Neverland" premieres Dec. 4 on Syfy, you will too. Written and directed by Nick Willing, who also wrote "Alice" and directed "Tin Man," this new approach to the story of Peter Pan and the creation of what would become a world where no one ages is both fun and moving at the same time. Charlie Rowe, ...

SciFi Mafia recently had the pleasure of talking with the extremely charming stars and the creator/writer/director of the upcoming Syfy miniseries Neverland. Rhys Ifans (Jimmy Hook), Charlie Rowe (Peter), Anna Friel (Capt. Elizabeth Bonny), and writer/director Nick Willing, whose previous work with Syfy includes directing the miniseries Tin Man and writing and directing the miniseries Alice.
When I spoke recently with Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story, True Blood) about his work in the horror genre, he gave an absolutely beautiful response, so I asked a similar question of the Neverland folk.
SciFi Mafia: Hi. Thanks everyone for being on the call. I cannot tell you how much I love this program.
Anna Friel: Thank you.
SciFi Mafia: Nick, I love Tin Man and Alice and watch them every time they’re on but wow. Neverland is an absolute treasure, so thanks to all of you...

There's an old saying in showbiz that a magician never reveals his secrets. The magician obviously doesn't want to put himself out of work, but he also recognizes that, to an extent, the audience doesn't want to know how the trick works, because it's more fun on some level to accept that something magical just happened. "Neverland," the latest Syfy re-imagining of a beloved public domain title (following 2007's "Tin Man" and 2009's "Alice," all directed by Nick Willing), isn't big on belief. In providing an origin story for Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Neverland itself, it wants you to...

This is one beautiful production. You get a taste of it from these pictures, but wait til you see it. Neverland is an all-uk cast – even writer/director Nick Willing (Tin Man, Alice) – which of course you can’t tell from the pics, but it adds to the ambiance, don’t you think?
Enjoy, and plan on watching the four-hour miniseries when it airs, December 4th and 5th on Syfy.

Those cheeky Brits always have something up their sleeves, don't they? First they unleash Benedict Cumberbatch as "Sherlock," leave us waiting forever for the next installment and now we'll have to resort to hooking and crooking to get hold of this little number. Sky Movies will premiere their two-part Peter Pan prequel, "Neverland" in July, but Godtopus knows when we'll be able to see it stateside. The made-for-television film is billed as an original story of how the orphaned Pan (Charlie Rowe, Pirate Radio, Never Let Me Go) came to be the Boy Who Never Grew Up. Rhys Ifans stars as the infamous Jimmy Hook, a man who runs a fencing school and "mentors" little Peter and his pickpocketing friends. Transported through a magical portal to Neverland, Peter and company meet up with characters transported from different places and times: Captain Elizabeth Bonny (Friel) and Smee (Bob Hoskins, reprising his...

If you just had mental images of Keira Knightley strapping on a pair of gossamer wings to play Tinker Bell from the headline, hold your imaginary horses. Knightley is lending her voice to play the pint-sized fairy in SyFy’s live-action, four-hour miniseries Neverland.
Neverland is a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of Peter Pan. Check out the summary:
“Peter, along with his pals of young pickpockets, have been rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook to snatch a magical orb that transports them to another world – Neverland. Filled with white jungles and imposing cities formed out of trees created by Dr. Fludd and inhabited by a colony of tree spirits led by Tinker Bell, this mysterious realm welcomes unknown friends and enemies snatched from time. Last year Maggie Carey's film The Hand Job was announced [1], in which Aubrey Plaza would play a high school graduate who decides she needs a lot more sexual experience before college, and proceeds to work her way through a checklist of, er, action items. Yesterday many more cast members [2] were announced and today we have even more, and roles for many of them. Connie Britton will play the main character's "liberal, free-spirited mother," Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on. Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool. Johnny Simmons is Plaza's classmate and co-worker, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is his sci-fi nerd best friend. There will be a few more roles cast yet,...

Ha! We always knew Tinkerbell could talk.
Okay, we might be mixing up the various mythologies here. Yes, there have been incarnations of J.M. Barrie's passionate (sometimes too passionate) fairy that communicated in more than just bells and whistles.
And we're assuming that's the angle Syfy will be taking on the character as they prepare their "Neverland" miniseries, seeing as that they probably just shelled out a lot of money to have Keira Knightley voice the character, according to Deadline.
Keira will be providing the voice of Tinkerbell in the four-hour miniseries that serves as a prequel to "Peter Pan." The "Pirates of the Caribbean" beauty will be joining Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel, Bob Hoskins, Charles Dance, Raoul Trujillo and Charlie Rowe on the project.

Our good chums over at Sky Movies HD are gearing up to deliver perhaps the finest TV movie you’ll see all summer, in the shape of Peter Pan prequel Neverland.
With an ensemble cast already boasting Charlie Row as Pan, Rhys Ifans as Captain Hook, Anna Friel as Captain Elizabeth Bonny and Bob Hoskins as Smee (a role he memorably portrayed in Spielberg’s 1991 semi-hit Hook), director Nick Willing has now added leggy Potc swashbuckler Keira Knightley to the impressive line-up.
Knightley will voice Tinkerbell, Pan’s titular fairy sidekick, who meets Peter and and his fellow Dickensian street urchins after they are transported to the magical forests of Neverland.
The press release also stated that the gang will bump into pirates, who happen to be denizens of the Caribbean, although it is unknown whether this encounter will lead to an awkward breaking of the fourth-wall and a few unsubtle winks from Knightley,...
