A while back, when we had celebrated the 30th anniversary of Trilobyte’s The 7th Guest, a few of you got nostalgic for the heyday of Full Motion Video (Fmv) horror games. So, what better way to scratch that itch than with a selection of titles from the genre’s peak?
Now obviously, there’s more to the genre than the usual culprits of Phantasmagoria, Harvester, Night Trap and so on. And yeah, the quality of Fmv titles is all over the place, even when you don’t factor in the age of the games. But darn it, there’s always room for varying types of cheese.
And for some of you, there are very likely some games you’ve either never heard of, or haven’t seen since the 90s…
Phantasmagoria – Windows, Ms-dos, Sega Saturn (1995)
Really, you can’t talk about Fmv horror without mentioning Phantasmagoria. It’s like...

Stephen King‘s a pretty cool guy, if you didn’t know. Not only has the master author set up a program to allow students to use the rights to his novels for just a dollar, but Stephen King had also done the same dollar deal with Remedy Entertainment and Alan Wake.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Remedy’s Sam Lake recently revealed he had “really, really, desperately wanted” to be able to open Alan Wake with a quote from King himself. After all, there were so many references to the famed Maine author in the game, so why not go the extra mile?
Of course, Remedy did get that quote from King, and according to Lake, the developer just had to pay a dollar in order to use it. “It’s my understanding he wanted $1 for us to get the rights to use it. [It was] so very generous.”

David Bloom is a Deadline contributor. All six major Hollywood studios and a raft of major tech firms have joined to solve compatibility and other issues with next-gen “cloud computing” tools they are increasingly using to create, collaborate on, distribute, protect and archive movies and other media. Dell, Emc, Rackspace and EVault are among the big tech firms taking part. The Entertainment Technology Center at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts will manage the joint standard-setting effort, called “Production in the Cloud.” Ex-Sony Pictures tech executive Ken Williams, now the Etc’s executive director and CEO, said the studios are trying to avoid another round of format wars, such as those that dogged Hollywood with Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD or VHS versus Betamax. Such format wars bring “uncertainty, inefficiency, and confusion to the marketplace, and (slow) product adoption and business growth for all players,” Williams said. “This effort will work to...

Love seems to be in the air in Starling City as last night's "Arrow" featured both Oliver Queen and Diggle going out on fancy dates, not to mention the fact that Thea Queen has found a new love interest in the form of bad boy Roy Harper. "Dodger" revolves mostly around Oliver and company tracking down a jewel thief named the Dodger. He's smooth, he's swift, and he loves to strap bombs to people's necks.
At the Arrowcave, Oliver, Diggle, and Felicity discuss Ken Williams, the next target on Robert Queen's list. Felicity does a background check on Ken and discovers that he has children which, of course, causes her to back out. She then brings up the Dodger, who normally operates primarily in Europe but has just recently made it to Starling City. Wanting to keep Felicity from going to the police, Oliver agrees to go after the jewel thief instead.

Farewell Betty Ford, one of the most honest and upfront First Ladies the United States has ever known. From her professed intent to share a bed with President Ford in the White House to her struggles with alcohol to her battle with breast cancer, she was always an open book and did wonders for progressive causes — all from a Republican perspective. Can you imagine that today?
