Michael Shannon is one hell of an actor. However, even he can’t save the bad writing of The Iceman.
Here’s the deal. What they are trying to accomplish is to make “The Iceman” or Richard Kuklinski a compelling character that you feel compassion for. The story is based on Kuklinski, so he is the main focus. The murders, unfortunately, fall a bit flat. Despite focusing on his hundreds of kills, they shine more of the limelight on his love for his family. I feel that some might be disappointed with the lack of focus on the murders, but the film itself concentrates more on the man. The script feels a bit weak still. All of the compassion felt for Kuklinski comes from Michael Shannon. He is a fantastic actor who offers a complete dimension of layers. Still, the writing doesn’t begin to do justice to what they...

Ioncinema.com's Watch What they Write is a unique monthly feature where we interview the writer – or more specifically, the voice behind the original source material. The novelist often creates a world that borrows from the cinematic and vice-versa - it’s not a coincidence that a heavy amount of projects that make it onto the silver screen are based on/adapted from literature. With this feature we hope to bridge the distance between author and his/her original material with what may one day make itself onto the screen. This month we feature: Anthony Bruno and his 1993 nonfiction book, The Iceman. Richard Kuklinski, son of a brutal, alcoholic father who came home only infrequently and a mother who vented her resentment on her children, grew up to be an efficient mass murderer. Having killed in upwards of a hundred people, in various ways which made him untouchable by the police force.

Talk about a triple threat of actors for one film.
Back in October we reported a story about Michael Shannon, James Franco and Benicio Del Toro signing on for a biopic about Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, one of the more infamous mob hitmen of the past fifty years. At the time it was (and probably still is) in competition with another planned film about the man, set to star Mickey Rourke. That movie, based on The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer by Philip Carlo, truly has some competition now, because Deadline tells us that all three aforementioned actors are now attached to the project, with Ariel Vroman set to direct.
Shannon would be taking on the lead part, and is said to be based on The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Brunowith, as well as Jim Thebaut‘s documentary The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer.

Three acting heavyweights – Michael Shannon, Benicio Del Toro and James Franco are set to star in The Iceman, a mob hitman thriller from B-grade director Ariel Vromen, who is stepping up to the big leagues here and in a big way!
Excitedly, as something of a rare treat – Shannon will be leading the picture as notorious hitman Richard Kulinski who it’s claimed killed over 100 people in his four decade career (40′s to 80′s) whilst working for the mob and keeping his true identity secret from his wife and kids.
Del Toro will play his boss Roy DeMeo and Franco is his mentor, Mr. Softee, backers Millennium Films and Bleiberg Entertainment announced Thursday. There’s no word just yet on who will play agent Dominick Polifrone, the man who goes undercover to try and take Kulinski down but they’ve certainly set a high casting precedent here.

James Franco, Michael Shannon, and Benicio Del Toro have all joined The Iceman. The film — which is based on Anthony Bruno’s The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer and Jim Thebaut’s documentary, The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer — centers on a contract killer (Shannon) who would freeze his victims. Del Toro will play the killer’s boss, while Franco plays his mentor, named Mr. Softee. I think we have a soundtrack!
