Viola Davis and husband Julius Tennon are getting into book publishing by launching Jvl Media.
The new venture, which includes author and publisher Lavaille Lavette at the helm, will look to champion under-represented voices in the book world. The debut titles from Jvl Media, from among a planned slate of non-fiction and fiction books, include Had to Lose to Win: The Tiki Davis Story, by popular motivational speaker Tiki Davis, and The Inclusion Leader Genius, by Dr. Johné Battle.
Davis and her JuVee Productions banner, run as well by producing partner Tennon, have already made deep inroads in film and TV production with titles like The Woman King and ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder that have highlighted underrepresented voices.

The sixth edition of the Joburg Film Festival wraps Sunday, putting a bow on a week that saw many in the host nation reflecting on South Africa’s long journey in the three decades since the end of apartheid. But among the filmmakers and executives taking part in the second Jbx content market the focus was squarely on the future, as Africa’s streaming wars and an eye toward global dealmaking highlighted how the tide has begun to shift in how the world perceives the continent. “What a time to be alive in Johannesburg,” said festival founder Timothy Mangwedi at Saturday’s award ceremony. “What a time to be alive in Africa.”

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions, which recently wrapped the action-thriller “G20” for Amazon Studios and MRC Film in Cape Town, is planning to return to South Africa to film the true story of a young African refugee’s improbable journey to the U.S., the company’s head of film production and development, Melanie Clark, revealed this week at the Joburg Film Festival.
Developing the film with a working title of “The Refugee,” Clark said Davis and Tennon’s production banner is “actively working on [it] with some local partners and are in the process of figuring out how to shoot it” in South Africa, adding that “we do plan to shoot that here.”
The veteran production executive described the project as “the true story of a young Sierra Leonean boy who lost his mother in [the country’s civil war] and found himself alone, because no family would take him in any refugee camp.

The Dream Team is back! Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up again for Animals, a kidnapping thriller for Netflix. Affleck will direct Animals from a script written by Connor McIntyre with revisions by Billy Ray. In addition to his directorial duties, Affleck will produce alongside Damon, Dani Bernfeld of Artists Equity, Brad Weston, and Collin Creighton of MakeReady, who set the project up with Fifth Season.
Plot details remain a mystery, though we know it focuses on a kidnapping. Michael Joe of Artists Equity and Kevin Halloran executive produce with Fifth Season.
Last year, Affleck and Damon delighted audiences with Air, a sports drama following the history of sports marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball, Michael Jordan. Ben Affleck’s Air employs a large ensemble cast to tell the story of how Nike landed Michael Jordan and created the iconic Air Jordan line of shoes, with Deloris Jordan brokering a revolutionary deal for her son.
Affleck — who pulls triple duty as director, producer (via his newly formed Artists Equity with Matt Damon, who stars in the film as Nike exec Sonny Vaccaro) and actor, playing Nike CEO Phil Knight — joined his stars Viola Davis (Deloris Jordan), Julius Tennon (Michael’s father, James Jordan; also Davis’ husband), Marlon Wayans (Olympic basketball coach George Raveling) and Jason Bateman (Nike marketing vp Rob Strasser) to discuss acting opposite a phone receiver and fighting for what you are worth, onscreen and off.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with first-timer Alex Convery’s screenplay for the Ben Affleck-directed Air.
Did you know that Michael Jordan makes $400 million a year in passive income due to the percentage he gets from the sale of Air Jordans? To understand how this came to be, we must travel back to the 1980s and the campus of famed sneaker label Nike, where Sonny Vaccaro (played by Matt Damon), a daring sneaker salesman, is on an ambitious quest to sign Jordan, arguably the most game-changing sports figure ever.
Affleck plays the role of Nike co-founder Phil Knight, who focuses on Nike’s improbable bid to land Jordan. While it seemed an unlikely feat at the time, it ultimately forged the most impactful partnership between a sports brand and an athlete, turning the global sneaker industry into a multibillion-dollar enterprise.

When the nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced in January, there appear to be four locks in the best ensemble category. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” currently lead the Gold Derby odds, with “The Color Purple” next in line. It’s quite possible that these five casts are the ones that will ultimately be chosen by the SAG Awards. However, there’s another film steadily hovering in sixth place. And it’s one that we should not ignore.
Here are five reasons why Amazon Studios’ “Air” might make its way into the guild’s best ensemble playoff.
1. It has the fab four making up its core.
Matt Damon. Ben Affleck. Jason Bateman. And, of course, Viola Davis. Those are huge names in the acting industry, and the fusion of the four may prove irresistible to the guild’s nominating committee.

Michael Jordan's life story may not have been the sole focus of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's movie "Air," now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but it makes a lot of familial connections to his mom, Deloris Jordan (played by Viola Davis), and dad, James Jordan Sr.. The movie recalls the true story behind Nike's epic landmark deal with Michael and how the Air Jordan sneaker came about. However, it also depicts the all-star athlete's close relationship with his parents, as well as his mother's major influence on his legendary career.
Tennon as Michael's father makes many appearances throughout "Air," mainly alongside Davis's character. And though the film covers a pivotal point in Michael's life, it doesn't include one of his most life-changing moments from 1993: the murder of his father, which, at the time, sparked a national media spectacle.

“Air” will shoot for Golden Globes — but not as a drama. The Ben Affleck-helmed film will submit in the comedy/musical categories, Gold Derby has learned exclusively.
Matt Damon will seek his second Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Actor (never forget his first win for 2015’s “The Martian”). The rest of the cast will run in supporting, including Affleck, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Julius Tennon, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis. The categorization does not affect them as the Globes have genre-neutral supporting categories.
The sports drama chronicles talent scout Sonny Vaccaro‘s (Damon) quest to sign Michael Jordan to the then-fledgling Nike in 1984, which led to the Air Jordan line that revolutionized athlete endorsement deals. It’s also a slick crowd-pleaser peppered with funny moments, mostly from Messina, who plays Jordan’s agent, David Falk, and has several hilariously vulgar phone call scenes.

Viola Davis has stepped back from 'G20' during the ongoing actors and writers strikes. The 57-year-old actress insisted it would not "be appropriate" to continue working on the movie - in which she plays US president Taylor Sutton, who has to help save the world when terrorists take over the G20 summit - despite producers having secured a waiver to keep filming from SAG-AFTRA because the project was being made by MRC, who are not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).Viola - who is also a producer on the movie via her and husband Julius Tennon's JuVee company - told Deadline in a statement: “I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. Viola Davis is backing away from “G20” in a move that may put pressure on other A-listers.
The Egot winner says she’s stepping away from the project even after the film got the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement necessary to start production.
“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike,” said the 57-year-old in a statement obtained by Et. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA.”
On Friday, SAG-AFTRA shared via its website that “G20” was approved for a waiver. Davis was set to produce and star in the film that secured the go-ahead from the actors guild, even given the involvement of Amazon Studios, because the project hails from the non AMPTP-affiliated MRC and will only be distributed by Amazon.

News of the move on Davis’ part comes one day after an unconfirmed report in The Sun that Brad Pitt has paused production on his Formula One film for Apple, in solidarity with strikers, also stepping away from a title called Apex.

News of the move on Davis’ part comes one day after an unconfirmed report in The Sun that Brad Pitt has paused production on his Formula One film for Apple, in solidarity with strikers, also stepping away from a title called Apex.

Right after Elsa Ramo, managing partner of Ramo Law PC, graduated law school, she made an “unconventional” decision. Instead of working for an established firm, she set up a trailer on the Universal Studios backlot in the summer of 2005.
Her business cards may have come from Kinko’s and she may have had to use the bathroom on the “Desperate Housewives” set, but her bold move paid off. During a time when filmmaking was switching from 35mm to digital, Ramo was right on site helping young directors and producers as they sold their $200,000 movies to the open market for seven figures.
“I was literally the girl on the Universal backlot who could do your production legal for basically no cost because I was excited to sign a client,” Ramo told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “It was sort of a perfect storm of geographically being in the right place.

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski are a dynamic duo. On June 1, the couple stepped out for the NYC premiere of "The Crowded Room," holding hands as they graced the red carpet together. The upcoming Apple TV+ drama stars Seyfried as Rya Goodwin, an interrogator determined to unravel the case of Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland), who is facing trial for a shooting. Sadoski, an actor in his own right, showed support for his wife at the event, smiling and interlocking arms as they walked around Midtown before the premiere.
Seyfried and Sadoski initially met on set of the off-Broadway show "The Way We Get By" in 2015, sparking dating rumors in March 2016 after they were photographed on a date in LA. Seyfried then announced they were expecting their first child together - a daughter named Nina - during a Givenchy press event, debuting her baby bump for the very first time. The...

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart returned to the red carpet together for the first time in almost five years to celebrate the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood couple, who tied the knot in 2010 after eight years of dating, flocked to the South of France on May 18 in matching black looks for the annual event - which could mark Ford's final "Indiana Jones" film shown there - and they looked joyful as ever as they held hands and posed for cameras.
Though Ford, 80, has attended numerous Hollywood events recently to promote his Indiana Jones reprisal, he and his wife haven't appeared on a red carpet together since the Academy's 10th annual Governors Awards in November 2018. Before they wed, Ford had been married twice to Mary Marquardt and Melissa Mathison, and he welcomed four kids from those relationships. He later adopted Flockhart's son Liam,...

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon did their thing at the Cannes Film Festival. Davis stunned at the premiere of "Monster" on May 17 in a feathery Valentino gown while her husband, also an actor, looked on in admiration. Photos from the event captured Tennon's sweet behind-the-scenes support, until he eventually joined Davis and posed on the red carpet. "Felt like a Queen with her King!" Davis wrote on Instagram, sharing more photos from the event.
Davis and Tennon first met in 1999 while filming "City of Angels," although Davis said it took her over a month to actually call Tennon back. "I had bad credit at the time. I had anxiety attacks from driving. I had to work out some personal issues first," she told "The Jess Cagle Interview" show in 2016.

Hey, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" fans. We're back in action to give you guys another unfortunate update for your favorite late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live. As most of you may have noticed by now, ABC is still being forced to air repeat episodes of it due to the current writers strike that's going on in Hollywood. It's not just the Jimmy Kimmel Live show that's being affected. It's all of the late night talk shows because they all need writers on a daily basis to do a show. Since they're all on strike, that's not going to happen, and we could see this go on for months if this writers strike doesn't get cleared up soon. With that said, we do have the repeat episodes that ABC will be airing for the rest of this week. Tonight, May 16, 2023, they're going to re-air the episode that originally aired back on...

Air is a film directed by Ben Affleck starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck himself.

Viola Davis is detailing her next dream role: an undead thriller.
The Egot winner and “Air” actress told IndieWire that she has her sights set on a “Train to Busan”-esque zombie film to conquer another onscreen genre.
“A lot of things I haven’t done in my career. Listen, I would love to do a zombie movie,” Davis said. “Now I say that, in shooting it, I don’t know if I can distinguish between the real and the fiction because if someone was running at me as a zombie, I don’t know. You might hear some stories. But I want a ‘Train to Busan.’ I want my version of ‘Train to Busan.’ I want to fight some zombies. That’s what I want to do.”

Chris Tucker has revealed he once had a private jet turn around from LA back to New York so he could meet Michael Jackson.
“I was in New York for two days waiting to meet Mj,” Tucker recalled.
He told GQ: “I took a private jet there. I said, well, I ain’t heard from him, I got to go.
“I took a private jet back to LA and as soon as I landed, I had a message: ‘Michael Jackson wants to meet you tomorrow morning.’ I was still on the plane. I went up to the captain and said, ‘I’ll pay you whatever you want to take me back to New York.’”
The comedian also revealed that he and Jackson later became close friends, and the singer encouraged him to take on more work in Hollywood.

There are a good few ways to dramatise Michael Jordan’s landmark $2.5m sponsorship deal with Nike. One is telling the story of a young basketball rookie on the brink of legend status. Another is telling the story of his mother, Deloris Jordan, who refused to see her son exploited by corporate America. Air, Ben Affleck’s Eighties-set sports drama, chooses a third option: to platform the boardroom of largely white marketing men who successfully transformed a human being into a corporate slogan. It’s the least compelling perspective imaginable.
The success of Air depends on how willing audiences are to discard Jordan as a person in favour of Jordan as an idea. This is an individual even the film refers to as the “greatest competitive athlete in history” – but who does not speak, or even appear beyond the occasional glimpse of the back of his head (or that of...

They later got married in June 2003, and it may have been fate that the pair got together. In 2022, on "Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event," Davis opened up about how she specifically prayed to find a partner like Tennon.
After taking advice from one of her friends who instructed her to pray for the kind of man she wanted, Davis revealed that she listed off her ideal qualities, which started with asking for "a big Black man from the South." "He said, 'Viola, even the vacuous stuff, just put it all in there. Looks, everything,'" the Egot winner recalled her friend saying. "I said, 'Really? With God? I gotta tell him that?' He's like, 'Yes, you gotta put it all out there.

Did you know that Michael Jordan makes $400 million a year in passive income due to the percentage he gets from the sale of Air Jordans? To understand how this came to be, we must travel back to the 1980s and the campus of famed sneaker label Nike. The story is the subject of Ben Affleck’s newest film Air. Written by Alex Convery, the movie stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman and Julius Tennon.
Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) likes to gamble — i.e. he likes to take risks. He works for Nike CEO Phil Knight (Affleck) as the company’s basketball division expert. He looks for up-and-coming b-ball players and offers them shoe endorsement deals, and currently he has his eye on an 18-year-old Michael Jordan. Sonny thinks Jordan is worth...

Viola Davis is, to put it lightly, an icon. Not only is she an Egot - or an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner - but she's also had major roles in some of the most talked-about movies and shows of the past decade or so, including "The Woman King" and Ben Affleck's "Air." She's also worked hard for many philanthropic and activist causes over the years. As it turns out, she's already passing her love for acting down to her daughter, Genesis Tennon, who made her big-screen debut in a voice-acting role in 2019's "The Angry Birds Movie 2."
Here's everything we know about budding star Genesis.
Genesis Tennon
Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, welcomed Genesis via adoption back in 2011, as People reported at the time. In 2017, Davis opened up to the publication about her daughter, saying her love for Genesis, now 12, "surpasses anything that I could want from the material world.

Expect the box office to be in full bloom this weekend.
Illumination and Universal’s Nintendo video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie has every chance of becoming the first blockbuster of 2023, if tracking is any indication. Not only is the PG pic whipping up interest among families, it is appealing to the generations of adults who grew up playing Nintendo’s wildly popular Mario games (or those who still play).
The movie opens Wednesday in order to take advantage of spring holidays and is looking at a five-day debut of $125 million or more in North America, and well north of $200 million worldwide. And many are already predicting a robust run, versusit being front-loaded.
In mid-February, Marvel and Disney’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted to $120.4 million over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend, but fell off steeply. To date, the movie’s worldwide gross is a disappointing $472.9 million,...

While Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were writing “The Last Duel,” their first screenplay together since their 1997 breakthrough, “Good Will Hunting,” they noticed that something in their winding and usually separate careers had been missing.
“I remember my wife said to me one day: ‘I haven’t heard you laugh like that in 15 years,’” says Damon. “We came out of that experience going: Why aren’t we doing this more often? And getting into your 50s you just go: If we don’t make it a priority, it’s just not going to happen.”
