The actor impresses in a dialled-down performance but can’t rescue this unconvincing film about a woman whose husband has a traumatic brain-injury
Well-meaning but contrived and unconvincing, this is a British drama about how traumatic brain injuries can leave people with hidden disabilities and complex needs. In her first non-comedy role Rebel Wilson plays archaeologist Sarah, whose husband, Joe (the film’s co-director Celyn Jones), has had life-changing surgery to remove a brain tumour. Two years later he is unable to form new memories and is impulsive and disinhibited. A couple of scenes showing these behavioural changes feel a bit overdone: in one he walks up to a little kid in the street and hands him a doughnut; the boy’s mum kicks off big-time, and within seconds the whole street is filming it on smartphones.
Sarah still loves her husband, but he is not the man she married; his identity,...

Who said the heroes’ journey can’t take a little detour? In the trailer for “We Are Lady Parts” Season 2, the eponymous female punk band decides to dabble in villainy — to endlessly entertaining results.
Created by “Polite Society” writer and director Nida Manzoor, “We Are Lady Parts” premiered in the U.K. in 2018 and in the U.S. via Peacock in 2021. IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote at the time that “Each member of the greater Lady Parts quintet could easily handle an episode on their own,” praising a show which is “at its best when it’s breaking free from restraints, too, tossing in a bunch of playful asides and visual diversions.”
“I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do,” Manzoor said in a press release accompanying the Season 2 trailer.

Classic 1990s comedy chat show The Kumars is returning to television, here are the details.
In the 1990s, there were two shows which brought black British comedy into the mainstream. The first was The Real McCoy, a sketch show which launched the television careers of double acts Curtis Walker and Ishmael Thomas, and Llewella Gideon and Collette Johnson. Later series featured Robbie Gee, Eddie Nestor, Judith Jacob, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Syal and the much missed Felix Dexter, amongst others.
The second series was sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which premiered on the BBC in 1997. Taking an irreverent look at Asian-British experience, the series is probably best known for the now iconic ‘Going For An English’ sketch, which poked fun at the stereotypical British experience of going for a curry, but flipping races to an Indian family going out for bland English food.

Oscar Wilde is known as one of the greatest wits in literary history. But he has brought some delightful eeriness, too, with works like The Picture of Dorian Gray and more. This month, one of his finest combinations of the two, the 1887 short story “The Canterville Ghost”, will arrive in animated form on the big screen. Now, we have a clip from The Canterville Ghost courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment and Shout! Studios that, like the movie itself, is aimed at the whole family.
In the clip, host Hiram Otis (David Harewood) shows off “the new wonder of the modern world” – electricity – to his dazzled guests, only to be pranked by those channeling the spirit of Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry), who soon commandeers the spook….

Mrs. Sidhu Investigates looks set to be an engaging mystery series with a comedic lick of humor.
The new drama series, headlined by Meera Syal, premieres Monday, September 18, on Acorn TV.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the series premiere in which Mrs Sidhu goes up against Dci Burton (Craig Parkinson).
Mrs. Sidhu, a caterer with a taste for solving crimes, is shocked when her niece, Rani, is taken away for questioning after some incriminating evidence.
All of this happens on Mrs. Sidhu's first day catering at Sharpetone, a high-end health club.
Things take a shocking turn when two bodies are found inside the spa.
Initially, Mrs. Sidhu is far more concerned with staying out of the drama until her niece is hauled in for questioning.
Mrs. Sidhu poses plenty of questions to Burton, who is taken aback at the fact that he should be asking the questions.

Mrs Sidhu Investigates follows Mrs. Sidhu (Syal), a high-end caterer with a taste for crime who solves murders and other ghastly crimes amongst the affluent residents of Berkshire.
A lifetime of being an "Indian Aunty," invisible to the elite, has sharpened her skills as an investigator: an instinct for truth, a warmth with people and a persistent sense of nosiness.
Recently widowed, Mrs. Sidhu juggles her new catering business with wrangling her wayward son, Tez (Singh), all while serving up justice to those who believe they are above the law.

“I was fortunate to watch the film when it opened in China and once I saw it I just knew we had to have it,” said Cedric Behrel of Trinity CineAsia. “‘Lost In The Stars’ is a very clever, uncanny thrill of a ride that harks back to classic Hitchcock and any noteworthy thriller since – the master himself had in fact once optioned the rights to the same story. We organized the fastest turnaround premiere known to man and we’ve been delighted by the reactions to the early previews. It epitomizes the best of what new Chinese cinema can bring to audiences.”

Since that finale, Unforgotten star Sanjeev Bhaskar has been bombarded with questions. “A lot of people on Twitter were saying to me, ‘Why did she have to die?’, ‘Why couldn’t she have just retired and lived with her boyfriend?’” He is talking, of course, about Dci Cassie Stuart – his indomitable sidekick in the cop drama, played by Nicola Walker, who was killed off in the fourth season’s final episode.
The pair were a detective duo with a special spark, the beating heart of the show since it first aired on ITV in 2015. For many, the idea of the series without Cassie and Bhaskar’s Di Sunil “Sunny” Khan is unthinkable. The shock twist left fans in tears – she never recovered from a car accident. But now the hit police procedural returns for a fifth series, and Sunny has – sniff – a brand new partner. How did Bhaskar take the...

Los Angeles-based director Manjari Makijany, who was nominated at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards for her film ‘Spin’ in the ‘Outstanding Directing for a Single Camera Programme’ and ‘Outstanding Fiction Special’ categories, feels she naturally gravitates towards inspiring stories.
The daughter of late actor Mac Mohan (remembered for playing Samba in ‘Sholay’) and Raveena Tandon’s cousin, Manjari said her voice as director is “constantly evolving” as she explores different themes and subjects.
An American Disney Channel Original Movie, ‘Spin’, which features Avantika Vandanapu, Meera Syal and Abhay Deol in lead roles, is about an Indian-American teen who discovers her passion for creating DJ mixes.
Makijany said: “I am a storyteller and I love that it allows me to explore the world around me and connect with people in more ways than one.
“I gravitate towards stories that are inspiring, evocative and give you the excitement and energy...

French author and now filmmaker Annie Ernaux is having a year. She was just awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize for literature. Her autobiographical L’Événement was adapted by director Audrey Diwan into the critically acclaimed Happening, released last spring. And this weekend, Kino Lorber presents her directorial debut, The Super 8 Years, at Film at Lincoln Center and Dctv Firehouse in NYC, expanding to LA and select markets through January.
The Super 8 Years, a visual extension of Ernaux’s decades-long literary quest to distill the past and future, is culled from home movies taken between 1972 and 1981, after her husband Philippe acquired an 8mm camera that became a family fixture. The film, a collaboration with her son David Ernaux-Briot, had its world premiere at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and screened at Busan, Rome, New York and Zurich Film Festivals. It’s a range of times and places, from holidays and family events in suburban France to trips in Albania,...

Adapting a stage play for the screen can be deceptively tricky. In the world of film, storytellers are encouraged to show rather than tell; in theater, they must be sure that even audience members in the nosebleed seats can follow along. Filmmaking can zero in on the microscopic, the unspoken: Moviegoers can see a character’s hair stand on end or track another’s nervous gaze. Particularly in drama, filmmaking often emulates reality, so to successfully adapt a dramatic play for the screen, one must dial down the histrionics and dial up the restraint.
If only the team behind “The Almond and the Seahorse” had gotten that memo. This film, adapted from the play of the same name by Kaite O’Reilly, is composed of characters so overwrought they seem like aliens. The screenplay, by O’Reilly and Celyn Jones (“Six Minutes to Midnight”) leaks with awkward dialogue and flowery language. Jones...

The plasticity of memory is a familiar dramatic subject, the stuff of sci-fi tentpoles (Total Recall), indie thrillers (Memento) and genre hybrids (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). On a more everyday level, that neural malleability suggests something fragile and vulnerable. For the two couples at the center of The Almond and the Seahorse, both affected by traumatic brain injury, there’s nothing theoretical about being stuck in a broken memory loop — it’s a sad and draining reality. How do you maintain a relationship with someone whose memory of your life together is fractured, erratic, deteriorating? That’s the painful challenge facing Sarah and Toni, characters played, respectively, by Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Apparently her first non-comedic big-screen role was life-changing for Wilson — a paradox given that the drama onscreen comes to life only in fits and starts. An adaptation of...

There is something inherently fascinating in the drama of a personality receding into a degenerative neurological condition, as demonstrated by such successful films of recent years as “The Father,” “Still Alice” and “Away From Her.” A first directorial feature for actor Celyn Jones and cinematographer Tom Stern, “The Almond and the Seahorse” promises a similarly compelling tale. Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg play disparate women both coping with domestic partners suffering escalating consequences from traumatic brain injuries (or Tbi).
But intriguing as that sounds, this overstuffed narrative never quite finds its footing, wobbling between cutesy comedy and tearful histrionics. Its erratic progress fails to fully realize central characters, despite the multinational cast’s efforts, or even shed much cogent light on the diagnostic theme. Based on a stage play, the film feels sufficiently cinematic to (mostly) hide that origin. Yet the patchy storytelling suggests an awkward compromise between two mediums that,...
