That perky exclamation point sets the tone for “Coup!,” a story of murder, class struggle, One Percent entitlement and a global pandemic that nonetheless unfolds with all the eager, scrappy energy of an off-Broadway musical, minus most of the songs. The pandemic in question is not the one you’re thinking of — Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman’s puckish comic thriller unfolds against the dire backdrop of the 1918 Spanish Flu — but it also sort of is, as its study of wealthy exceptionalism in a time of national crisis is clearly intended to chime with more recent memories of regimented distancing and mixed safety messages from on high.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard as a wily cook entering the quarantined estate of Billy Magnussen’s upper-class journalist — and taking advantage of their isolation to start a servant uprising — this is quick, nippy entertainment that raises plenty of sociopolitical talking points without digging too deep into any of them.

Although Coup! has a small cast and unfolds mostly in a secluded mansion during the 1918 influenza pandemic, it packs a lot of flavor, suspense and droll comedy into its slim 97-minute running time, making it fun enough to deserve an exclamation point in its title. Peter Sarsgaard offers a sly, juicy performance as a shady chef who weasels his way into the home of an entitled young heir (Billy Magnussen). Soon, the upstart is turning the servants and family members against the hypocritical patriarch, who fancies himself a progressive. A collaborative effort between writer-directors Austin Stark (The God Committee, The Runner) and Joseph Schuman, this satirical work is hardly profound or subtle about the parallels with the present-day class conflict, but it wears its screw-the-rich subtext with insouciant breeziness.

The life of an idiotic leftist journalist, isolating in his mansion, is upended by the real world in the form of Peter Sarsgaard’s mutinous chef in this broad, fun caper
The revolution begins at home in Coup!, an energetic, bantamweight drama from directors Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman that brings down the curtain on this year’s Venice Days sidebar at the film festival. Specifically, in this case, it begins at the seaside home of Jc Horton (Billy Magnussen), a crusading leftist journalist at the time of the 1918 Spanish flu.
Horton bashes his typewriter keys in a righteous fury. Sheltering on his estate, he reports on life inside the plague-ridden city, describing the brave proletariats and the brutal police officers; the bodies heaped in the street and the rain of billy clubs upon heads. His wife turns the pages and is suitably impressed. She says: “It does feel like you were really there.

The kind of self-flaggellation the Left does is something you never see from the Right.
The Left’s fears about being in a bubble, about not doing enough to understand the other side, about their own overreach, are a phenomenon unique to liberals. There does not need to be a New York Times Pitchbot for the Right. Ben Shapiro is not issuing a blistering movie review takedown of a Dinesh D’Souza documentary that went too far and didn’t listen enough to the other side.
And now there’s “Coup!” Politically muddled at best, something Ron DeSantis would happily introduce at Cpac at worst, this populist satire from directors Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman is an Adam McKay-lite class-war confection looking to have it both ways. Its “eat the rich” message is certainly strong enough for those with an extremely niche grievance: Those who, three years later, want to...

The 1 percent may be enjoying some serious #lifegoals at the minute, but they’ve been having something of a tough time on screen. Parasite, Triangle of Sadness and The Menu are just a few recent films that have shifted the power dynamics away from the super wealthy and into the hands of those grubby lower classes, with sometimes deadly results. Coup! — from Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman, who both wrote and directed, and closing the Venice Days sidebar — is set to join this growing list.
Set during the 1918 Spanish Flu, the darkly comic thriller stars Billy Magnussen as Jay, a progressive, velvet-slippered U.S. journalist sheltering from the chaos with his family — and their servants — on a swanky island estate (all the while penning angry articles that suggest he’s in the thick of it in New York). But when Peter Sarsgaard’s mysterious grifter Floyd shows up as their cook,...

French director Élise Girard’s “Sidonie in Japan,” starring Isabelle Huppert as a French writer mourning her husband’s death while on a book tour of Japan, is among titles set to launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Giornate Degli Autori.
The section, also known as Venice Days, has unveiled its lineup comprising 10 titles world premiering in competition – six of which are first works – and in other sections displaying a wide range of genres and visual styles, but tied together by “a common discourse,” said the section’s artistic director Gaia Furrer.

Questlove’s Summer of Soul is up to 753 theaters as the doc about the 1969 ‘Black Woodstock’ concert in Harlem that debuted in two locations last weekend crossed into arthouse, commercial and urban venues.
Not that it was easy, said Frank Rodriguez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “Exhibitors are eager to get back on track,” he said. “We had to push very hard in a crowded marketplace” that includes The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge and week two of the first true post-Covid blockbuster, F9.

Kelsey Grammer and Julia Stiles do not make a natural romantic couple, and their awkward pairing is the largest misstep made by “The God Committee,” writer-director Austin Stark’s adaptation of Mark St. Germain’s play about a group of doctors tasked with deciding which of three patients should receive a heart transplant. Often resembling a schematic variation on “Twelve Angry Men” by way of “Grey’s Anatomy,” this earnest drama is That won’t be enough to garner it much box-office traction, but it does make it a solid option for adult VOD viewers.

"It's blood money." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for The God Committee, a new medical drama about doctors from filmmaker Austin Stark (The Runner). The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month before opening in select theaters starting in July. It follows a group of medical professionals who are forced to "play God," as they a part of a hospital committee that must decide which patients will receive necessary organ transplants. It begs many moral questions that nurses/doctors have dealt with over the past year, while also having a suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing through the end. The film features an excellent cast: Kelsey Grammer, Julia Stiles, Janeane Garofalo, Peter Y. Kim, Caroline Lagerfelt, Elizabeth Masucci, with Dan Hedaya and Colman Domingo. Kelsey Grammer and Julia Stiles have been set to star in an upcoming medical thriller called The God Committee. The movie will be directed by Austin Stark (The Runner) from a script that he wrote and the actors will be joined by co-stars Colman Domingo, Janeane Garofalo and Dan Hedaya.
The God Committee explores the U.S. organ transplant system. “The movie follows a donor heart being flown to a New York hospital, where a transplant committee has an hour to decide which patient is the recipient. The story also explores the impact of that decision six years later. It is currently shooting in New York.”
Stark had this to say in a statement:
“The worldwide organ shortage continues to devastate families from all walks of life. I feel honored to be working with such an incredible ensemble –- anchored by Kelsey, Julia, Colman, Janeane and Dan –- in my...

Sebastián Silva’s followup to his 2015 drama “Nasty Baby,” “Captain Dad,” chronicles a family vacation gone awry when plans don’t go as scheduled. Now it’s looking like that same premise is happening in real life for the Chilean director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, just days before production was set to begin, the film’s lead, Will Ferrell, has dropped out of the comedy.
Also starring Michael Cera and Catherine Keener, “Captain Dad” was scheduled to begin filming on September 26 in and around Cartagena, Colombia and Ferrell’s exit as the titular character has now left Silva and producers trying to figure out what’s next. Per the site, several of the cast and crew are already in Colombia awaiting to hear what the next steps will be. Producers for the film are Anne Carey, Bingo Gubelmann, Benji Kohn and Austin Stark.

In the aftermath of the Bp oil spill, an idealistic but imperfect New Orleans politician (Nicolas Cage) finds his plans of restoration unravelling as his own life becomes contaminated with corruption, scandal and deceit.
I am going to leap right into the meat of it here and say that The Runner is not a happy film. If you’re one of those people who like a happy ending and for everything to be wrapped up at least a little bit by the end, you definitely shouldn’t go for this film. It has quite a dark and depressing finish.

With an impending election on the American horizon, it seems fitting for a few political dramas/thrillers/think pieces to start finding their way into cinemas. Everyone seems to have their own (correct) opinion in regards to political action these days, as social media and journalistic “investigation” only strengthen everyone’s singular voice. But with so many other poignant political assessments already logged in Hollywood’s catalog, it’s hard to find much weight in the issues that Austin Stark’s The Runner raises. It’s an oil-spill-gone-worse scenario that’s more about a struggling politician than White House corruption itself, led by a tormented Nicolas Cage in one of his better roles of the last few years (sans Kick-Ass, Joe, and of course, Drive Angry). Yet, by the film’s conclusion, no new ground finds itself covered.

The visionary leader respectfully sets out to protect the citizens of his city who have been negatively impacted by a recent natural disaster, only to devastatingly see his personal motivations and career derailed by an inadvertent scandal. This is the latest film from director Austin Stark, who has produced the Sundance hit Infinitely Polar Bear and indie comedy Hello I Must Be Going.
Stark shot The Runner on location in the Louisiana gulf and Washington DC last summer.
The Runner - which also stars Connie Nielsen, Peter Fonda and Sarah Paulson – bows on August 7 in the Us. A UK release is yet to be set.

At this point, having flooded the market with such efforts as Left Behind, Outcast, Stolen, Drive Angry, Justice, Season Of The Witch, Knowing, and the Ghost Rider movies, there is a certain baggage that accompanies any casting of Nicolas Cage – regardless of the nature of the project. With an understandable reputation for somewhat bizarre and off-the-wall performances, Academy Award winner Cage regularly has an uphill battle to fight when it comes to new releases. The first trailer for his upcoming movie, The Runner, takes on a lot of that fight for him, however, as it showcases what could be his most nuanced performance in some time.

Some years back, I made a promise to myself to see every movie Nicolas Cage has ever starred in, and I'll be damned if I don't make that a reality. The man's an alluring engima on-screen, never consistent enough to call a good or bad actor but never less than confounding. While I haven't made time yet to check out Dying of the Light or Bringing Out Your Dead or Snake Eyes, to sadly name a few, they'll end up on my queue sometime. And so will his latest, the headline-heavy thriller The Runner, and maybe sooner than later. Because, quite frankly, this one looks like a hoot. The general plot of this has something or another to do with Cage as an untrustworthy politician who finds his career intertwined with the 2010 Bp oil spill, and works his way up through the support of his love ones and a couple...
