Lynne Spencer is an independent film director, producer and cinematographer who started working in the mainstream film industry in 1993 for major studios such as Paramount, Disney and New Line Cinema on feature films such as Double Jeopardy, Reindeer Games, 13th Warrior and Elf.
In 2003, Lynne began shooting, producing and directing her own independent projects: creating short films, video for dance and theatre, as well as commercial work for clients including Ballet BC, The Arts Club Theatre and Lululemon Athletica. Her work has been presented at the Joyce SoHo New York, The Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Hamilton Film Festival and The Scotia Bank Dance Center.
The documentary film Broken is Lynne's first feature length film. It began in 2009 while Lynne was shooting a photo series about Ballet BC's dancer, Simone Orlando. Lynne followed her career for a year and a half before Simone confided in her that she needed to have a total hip replacement. Astonished by the news, Lynne knew there must be more to the dancer's story. She found a story she had to tell.
Whether she is directing a short film, a commercial campaign, or a documentary feature, the story drives her process. Lynne is drawn to intimate stories and strives to convey them in a personal way, often blending stills with motion and editing in innovative ways. Lynne's desire to make films began while she earned her BA in Film Studies at the University of Toronto. Guest lecturers like film director, David Cronenberg, inspired her to learn about all the aspects of the art form. To this day, she continues to study the craft of photograph, film editing and story telling.
