- She was made aware of what was to become her most notable role, Yitzhak in the Broadway production "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", by an agent in 1998 who handed her a small slip of paper on which was written, "A man to be played by a woman. Surly, Jewish, Croatian. Ex-drag queen billed as 'Krystall Nacht, the Last Jewess of the Balkans'".
- Her parents divorced when she was seven and she alternated between living in Turin, Italy (with her mother), and suburban Detroit (with her father).
- Gave birth to her first child, daughter Ruby, in 2009 at age 37.
- Graduated from Ferndale High in 1989.
- Daughter Iris was born in 2013.
- Attended the University of Michigan, where she performed in a variety of roles in the student theater. She was in three different shows in which she played the Virgin Mary.
