I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

Holidays loom, but don’t fear TBS marathons of A Christmas Story. If, like me, you once enacted some good and let studio classics stream on Criterion during family Christmas, you know the trip home will be easier with December’s additions. (People at Criterion: please don’t report me for logging into multiple devices.) As family arrives, drinks are downed, and questions about what you’ve been up to are stumbled through it’ll be nice to stream their “Screwball Comedy Classics” series—25 titles meeting some deep cuts (10 via Venmo if you’ve recently watched It Happens Every Spring).
Personally I’m most excited about the 11 movies in “Snow Westerns,” going as far back as The Secret of Convict Lake, as recently as Ravenous, with the likes of Wellman, Peckinpah, and Corbucci in-between. I personally cannot stand soccer but I appreciate the World Cup giving occasion for a series...

“Top Chef: Houston” started last week with a challenge focused around primal cuts of beef. So it’s fitting that episode two, “Friday Night Bites,” took the cheftestants in completely the opposite direction: carbs! Read on to find out what the contestants did with my favorite food group.
See‘Top Chef’ season 19 premiere recap: ‘Primal Instincts’ started Houston competition with a beefy team challenge
The 14 chefs remaining in the competition were Damarr Brown, Jo Chan, Monica Feybesse, Evelyn Garcia, Robert Hernandez, Jae Jung, Jackson Kalb, Sam Kang, Luke Kolpin, Buddha Lo, Stephanie Miller, Ashleigh Shanti, Nick Wallace, and Sarah Welch.
But before the chefs went carb crazy, they had to tangle with my second favorite food group …
Quickfire Challenge
When the cheftestants entered the kitchen, they were greeted by Padma Lakshmi and guest judge Irma Galvan, a James Beard Award winning chef. They were surrounded by piles of cheese and a fondue machine.

Watch David Chang Become 1st Celebrity to Win $1 Million on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ (Video)
Chef David Chang became the first celebrity on the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” celebrity edition to win $1 million. He was playing for the Southern Smoke Foundation.
On Sunday, Chang risked $500,000 on the final question: “Although he and his wife never touched a light switch for fear of being shocked, who was the first president to have electricity in the White House?”
Chang’s options:
A) Ulysses S. Grant
B) Benjamin Harrison
C) Chester A. Arthur
D) Andrew Johnson
The celebrity chef didn’t even know that Benjamin Harrison, who was the correct answer, was a United States president. Thank goodness for Phone-a-Friend Mina Kimes.
“Uh, it’s not Grant,” the ESPN personality told Chang. “That would be the 1800s. I think it’s– it’s probably Harrison.”

By the time Stacy Seebode was let go from her job as Chef de Partie at New York’s L’Appart restaurant last Monday, she had already spent the week fielding panicked calls and texts from restaurant industry peers around the country. In Washington state, which was slightly ahead of New York in terms of its restaurant closures, unemployment claims had jumped 115 percent between March 7 and March 14. Claims across the country were up by 70,000, with so many coming in that the online application site was crashing. And empty restaurants were...

Kier-la Janisse's Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies has been educating people in London, New York and Montreal for a few years now on the wide variety of forms and subjects in horror films. And there are two excellent classes upcoming in London for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the genre. On Thursday November 9th, the Institute is welcoming Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah, 'D is for Deloused from ABCs of Death 2) and Chris Shepherd (Dad's Dead, Silence is Golden) to discuss horror animation. Animation of the horror variety might not be common, but some of the best short animated films of recent years are horror, with monsters, dark places, and scares abounding in the argubaly far greater imaginative form that can be achieved...

Not the kind you wear in the summer – check out five of the best short films from UK film-makers, and recommend your favourites
Laurence Boyce is a film journalist and programmer of various short film festivals in the UK and Europe. Follow him on Twitter @LaurenceBoyce or find him at laurenceboyce.weebly.com
"Short films eh? They're just practice before you make a real film."
In my career as a short film programmer, the above is a phrase I hear with depressing regularity. Sure, many directors make shorts before they make feature films (including Mike Leigh, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick) but to dismiss them as "practice" would seem a bit unfair. Nobody says Kafka's short stories are rubbish because they're not the length of a novel.
A short film is an art form in its own right and to make a great short requires innate skill and immense talent.

Reinvention, innovation, and cultivation make Houston our City of the Year for 2011.
It's Past 11 P.M., And I'm walking with my husband in downtown Houston. We've just seen a play at the Alley Theatre, and the stroll to our car, which I'd left at my office, gives us time to dissect the show and enjoy the city at night.
Enjoy the city at night: I never would have thought of doing that in 1980, when I first came to Houston. Back then, downtown was not a place I'd wanted to walk after dark. That I can do it now is one sign of how Houston, America's fourth-largest city and a place I've lived in and around for most of my life, continues to reinvent itself.
We're a diverse city of 2.1 million residents, with A-list universities, top museums, and the world's largest and arguably best medical center. We have a vibrant business...

A most sincere apology for the absence of shorts all last week, but now we're back with an especially good short film. From filmmaker Chris Shepherd comes this eerie story of a childhood memory gone wrong. It mixes manipulated live-action with digital animation to form uniquely ghostly visuals. Danny Boyle liked this award winning short so much that he included it in the Special Features of Sunshine's DVD and Blu-ray release.
