The world recently said farewell to Roger Corman, the legendary B-movie producer, writer, director, and performer who passed away at the well-lived age of 98. Corman completely revolutionized the film industry, not only with his independent spirit and penchant for low-budget fare, but also serving as a launchpad for some of cinema's greatest creatives, including Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, and Penelope Spheeris, and that's just scratching the surface.
Known by many for his hundreds of produced films, Corman was also a well-decorated director in his own right, helming 55 films before his death. Corman dabbled in any and all genres, with comedy, drama, horror, exploitation, monster, sci-fi, sexploitation, gothic, and action all well-represented throughout his filmography. In honor of the King of B-movies and one of the most prolific filmmakers of all time, here are his 10 best films as a director, ranked.

Roger Corman, who died Saturday at 98, was famously involved with many of the greats of filmmaking at the start of their careers. In the case of Ron Howard, he helped the young actor transition from being a child star into a versatile director, giving him his first directing job with the action comedy “Grand Theft Auto” in 1977.
Howard noted that Corman was also known for giving women more opportunities than they typically had in the film industry at that time, including Penelope Spheeris and Gale Ann Hurd.
Howard paid tribute to Corman Sunday morning in a heartfelt message, writing, “Roger not only mentored a couple of generations of high profile filmmakers, but he also opened doors to many on the production side who were struggling to find career paths in the industry. When I was working for Roger, he had far more women in positions of authority throughout his company...

If you were a kid in the early 1990s, you were probably a fan of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in the "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Wayne's World." Myers played Wayne Campbell, a metal fan who shot a cable access show in his mom's basement with his buddy Garth Algar (Dana Carvey). The bit spawned a whole lot of catchphrases like the self-explanatory "schwing" when they saw a pic of a beautiful woman. Not every "SNL" sketch can support an entire movie, but "Wayne's World" not only managed one but two. In fact, it was the second "SNL" sketch to become a film after "Blues Brothers" and the first to get a sequel.
"Wayne's World," directed by Penelope Spheeris, infamously gave rise to a lot of rumors about Myers being difficult to work with during filming. In an episode of The Hollywood Reporter's "It Happened in Hollywood" podcast, Spheeris spoke about the experience,...

Wayne’s World ranks as one of the funniest and most quotable comedies of the 1990s, but that doesn’t mean it was an excellent experience for everybody on set. Now, as the sequel nears its 30th anniversary, director Penelope Spheeris reflects on her clashes with star/apparent diva Mike Myers and why she wasn’t asked to return.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Penelope Spheeris pointed to the test screenings as the real point at which her relationship with Mike Myers came to a head, stemming from a lack of trust in the director and the viewers. “I got great audience reaction in the testing setting. That’s when the crap hit the fan,” she said. “He wasn’t there to witness the incredible audience reaction and look at the test cards and realize that we had something on our hands.” Instead, Myers handed over 11 pages of notes, which Spheeris...

Wayne’s World director Penelope Spheeris is setting the record straight about rumored clashes with star Mike Myers on the set of 1992’s Wayne’s World — the first scripted feature for both of them.
“It was not an uncomfortable set,” Spheeris, 77, tells THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. “Mike is hypoglycemic, so if he got low blood sugar he could get grumpy. So, big deal. I worked with Richard Pryor and Albert Brooks. They’ll cause you a heart attack.”
Spheeris says the discord began after filming had wrapped and the finished film was screened for test audiences. Myers’ father died at that time, so he returned to Canada for the funeral and missed those early screenings.

Carvey continued, “I’m always game. Love Mike Myers. Just a brilliant guy.”
1992’s “Wayne’s World” was spun-off from a recurring “Saturday Night Live” sketch, and starred the duo as goofy heavy metal fans who host a public access TV show from their basement.

All the way back in 2004, P!nk was slated to star in a Janis Joplin biopic from director Penelope Spheeris that never saw the light of day. So you can count on Howard Stern to get her reflecting on the contentious matter nearly 20 years later.
The project was tentatively titled “The Gospel According to Janis” and featured a years-in-the-making script co-written by Spheeris (“Wayne’s World”) and Brad Vanderburg. It would have marked P!nk’s screen acting debut in a starring role; when she was cast, Spheeris called it “the most gratifying moment in my film career.” So what happened?
With the gift of hindsight, the Grammy-winning singer in part blamed Hollywood sexism for why the project — and others like it — still hasn’t been made.

Pink was once in the running to play Janis Joplin in a movie about the classic rock musician’s life. Here’s why it has been so difficult for filmmakers to create a Janis Joplin biopic and what Pink said about the casting process.

When "Wayne's World" came out in 1992, it was a hit. Starring Mike Myers as chipper Wayne and Dana Carvey as shy Garth, the movie follows their lives as two music-obsessed young adults with a public-access television show that gets a chance to go big. The film got its start as a popular sketch on "Saturday Night Live" in which Myers and Carvey also starred, and even now, over 30 years after its original release, it still makes our hearts go schwing!
In the film, Wayne and Garth constantly frequent a local donut shop, Stan Mikita's Donuts, where they like to kill time. The place is managed by Glen, an older man with a shady past. Glen, who is played by Ed O'Neill, is an extremely disturbing individual, and even though his donut shop has "excellent munchables," those who eat at Stan Mikita's should definitely be asking some serious questions about him.

Todd Field's "Tár," easily one of the best films of 2022, was a long time in the making. It is the first feature film Field made since "Little Children," which came out in 2006. In the intervening 16 years, Field attempted to make multiple projects, most of them based on his favorite books, to no avail. Among the filmmaker's unmade projects were an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian," a political thriller he co-wrote with Joan Didion, an autobiographical film about his childhood experiences working for the defunct Portland baseball team called the Mavericks, and a biography of Bowe Bergdahl, an American prisoner of war. It wouldn't be until "Tár" that his filmmaking career would finally pick up again, his third feature as a director, having made his debut in 2001 with the Best Picture Oscar nominee "In the Bedroom."

When you think of the late Chris Farley, camera shy isn't what comes to mind. From his time on "Saturday Night Live" with characters like his Chippendales dancer who performed with Patrick Swayze, or motivational speaker Matt Foley who lives in a van down by the river, to his work in films like "Black Sheep" and "Tommy Boy," Farley had a wild energy and a grasp of physical comedy like no other.
Farley was a cast member on "SNL" from 1990 to 1995 and part of a group that was often referred to as the "Bad Boys of SNL" along with Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. He never failed to get laughs and seemed to be game for anything in front of a camera. Off-camera, though, Farley struggled with drugs and alcohol and tragically died from a drug overdose in 1997 at the age of 33. His comedy,...

Even if you've never seen the 1992 film "Wayne's World," you probably know about the scene where the main characters sing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the car. Comedians David Spade and the late Chris Farley were one of the most memorable comedy duos of the '90s, both as ⅔ of the Gap Girls on "Saturday Night Live" and as co-leads of two of the decade's classic buddy films. Decades beyond the release of the latter film, Penelope Spheeris' "Black Sheep," it still delivers plenty of Farley's physical comedy -- its funniest scenes sees him tussle with a bat and a steep hillside -- and strong buddy chemistry with Spade. But the end product mimics the earlier "Tommy Boy," but without much of that film's magic, leading one of its leading men to wish the movie had been axed.
Coming out of "SNL" fame, Farley signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. "Tommy Boy'' fulfilled the first half, grossing 32 million on a 20 million budget. Following Farley's Tommy Callahan III on a mission to sell brake pads with a less-than-thrilled Spade in tow,...

Cyran's name may not be easily recognizable, but her legacy will live on in a varied career spanning multiple mediums and genres. After graduating from Harvard and working for the Royal Shakespeare Company for two years, Cyran got her start in the world of cinema under the tutelage of legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman, having gotten her start as an executive assistant. Penelope Spheeris' 1996 comedy film "Black Sheep" was the second film to feature David Spade and Chris Farley playing opposite each other as a traditional comedy duo. Their first was Peter Segal's 1995 film "Tommy Boy." The two had also previously appeared in Steve Barron's alien comedy "Coneheads," although they had no scenes together. "Black Sheep" was about Mike (Farley), the slovenly brother of a gubernatorial candidate named Al (Tim Matheson) who needs to run his campaign without his clumsy sibling getting in the way. To clear his path, Al hires Steve (Spade) to take Mike out of town for a few days while the campaign finishes. Spade and Farley take to the highways. Wacky road trip shenanigans ensue.

Throughout his decades-long career, writer, actor, comedian, and director Mike Myers has been part of not one, not two, but three mammoth movie hits. Google his name, and you'll find stories alternating between the mullet hero of "Wayne's World," a psychedelic spy, or a grumpy green ogre -- such is the versatility of this Canadian-born comedy machine.
As if his franchise chops weren't impressive enough, he's also responsible for creating two out of these three blockbuster movie tentpoles. While it was always his ambition to be a filmmaker, twenty, thirty years ago, director Todd Field was known as an actor, working with Penelope Spheeris, Nicole Holofcener, Jan de Bont, and even Stanley Kubrick in “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999). That quickly changed in 2001; Field’s directorial debut, “In The Bedroom,” would earn five Academy Award nominations, including two for Field for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

"If the camera is predatory, then the culture is predatory as well." Kino Lorber has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film titled Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, which originally premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. After playing at a festivals around the world, it's ready to open in theaters this October. The film investigates the politics of cinematic shot design, and how this meta-level of filmmaking intersects with the on-going twin epidemics of sexual abuse/assault and employment discrimination against women. It's a deep-dive into patriarchal power, and how it even seeps into every last shot in cinema. Featuring over 175 movie clips from 1896 to 2020. The film also features interviews with an all-star cast of women and non-binary industry professionals discussing all of this, including: Julie Dash, Penelope Spheeris, Charlyne Yi, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Eliza Hittman, Rosanna Arquette. The result is an electrifying call-to-action that will fundamentally change...

Documentarian Nina Menkes is turning her camera on cinema history itself.
Menkes’ “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” centers on the cultural normalization of the exploitative male gaze found in cinema. Using clips from more than 175 films ranging from “Sleeping Beauty” to “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Spring Breakers,” Menkes deconstructs how the visual language of cinema is connected to “employment discrimination against women and an environment of pervasive sexual harassment, abuse, and assault.”
The film premieres October 21 via Kino Lorber at the new Dctv Firehouse Cinema in New York City and the Laemmle in Los Angeles, with a national rollout to follow.
Based on Menkes’ acclaimed talk “Sex & Power: The Visual Language of Cinema,” the film made its world premiere at 2022 Sundance. Award-winning documentarian Menkes argues that shot design is gendered, with “Brainwashed” seeking to illuminate the patriarchal narrative codes that hide within supposedly “classic” set-ups and camera angles, and demonstrates how women are...

When Penelope Spheeris was making the first part of her landmark documentary The Decline of Western Civilization in 1979 and 1980, none of the people she was chronicling were known outside of Los Angeles’s dank punk scene. Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm and the Eddie Volkman Show on Star 96.7 Wssr-fm reviewing the new Steel Case 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition of “Wayne’s World” from Paramount Pictures.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
”Wayne’s World” lives on as both a moment in that space and time… 1992 … and a fairly timeless film about two dweebs who make good. Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) are best buds who have nothing in their lives except a public access TV show broadcast out of a basement in Aurora, Illinois. When a sleazy TV exec sees the show accidentally, he buys it for a Chicago entertainment conglomerate. In the meantime, Wayne is wooing Cassandra (Tia Carrere), a rock goddess he has a crush on. Can these two bros get a break? Schwing!

Garth: What do you do if every time you see this one incredible woman, you think you’re gonna hurl?
Wayne: I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she’s yours. But if you spew and she bolts, it was never meant to be.
Sage advice from two legends. Really, this line from the original Penelope Spheeris-helmed Wayne’s World (1992) sort of encapsulates a lot about what makes that film so great: its strength is its expert ability to elucidate intelligent truths, covertly bundled in the ramblings of airheads.
That movie was released 30 (!) years ago today, February 14th, 1992. It’s time for a most excellent look back at the classic blockbuster comedy, for those of us who don’t want to live in the now. Party on.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of "Wayne's World," the second feature film to be adapted from a "Saturday Night Live" sketch. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey turned the public access duo into a box office sensation, spawning a sequel and a whole series of "SNL" films in the 1990s, for better ("Coneheads") and for worse ("It's Pat"). Though it's "SNL" mastermind Lorne Michael and his sketch comedy cast members responsible for bringing "Wayne's World" to life, it's director Penelope Spheeris who wrangled the short-form concept into a feature-length film. Sorting through endless pages of new ideas on set and working with a lot of...

Remember “It’s Pat” or “Coneheads”? While those movies based on “Saturday Night Live” skits are perhaps better left forgotten, 30 years later, “Wayne’s World” remains a classic 1990s absurdist comedy. It made phrases like “We’re not worthy!,” “Party on,” “Not!” and “Bonus!” enduring parts of the culture and became a surprise box office hit.
Mike Myers and Dana Carvey started their Wayne and Garth public access show “Wayne’s World” on “Saturday Night Live,” and it became one of just a handful of the show’s skits that justified a feature film version.
Originally released Feb. 14, 1992, “Wayne’s World” was recently re-released in a limited edition 30th anniversary Blu-Ray SteelBook from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Myers and Carvey brought endearing goofiness to their roles as public access cable TV hosts on a mission to promote their show, but the comedy’s success had another secret ingredient: director Penelope Spheeris, who was immersed in...

Wayne’s World is celebrating its 30-year anniversary and it’s party time. Excellent. Originally released on Feb. 14, 1992, and most recently re-released in a Blu-ray Steelbook edition, it brought Mike Myers and Dana Carvey’s lo-fi cable hosts Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar from weekly segment appearances on Saturday Night Live to global domination on the big screen.
Written by Myers, Bonnie Turner, and Terry Turner, Wayne’s World wasn’t expected to be a hit, much less a comedy classic with a $183 million worldwide box office take, and a sequel. It defied convention, enthusiastically breaking the fourth wall with characters directly addressing the camera, and exploring self-referential jokes, random cultural spoofs, and self-fulfilling alternative ending gags.
Also starring Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere, Lara Flynn Boyle, Brian Doyle-Murray, Chris Farley, Ed O’Neill, and Ione Skye, Wayne’s World captured every key demographic. Advertisers begged to get spoofed in the product placement take-down takeoffs,...

We’re not worthy of this level of dedication.
Ahead of the 30th anniversary of “Wayne’s World,” which was released on February 14, 1992, director Penelope Spheeris revisited filming the classic comedy and shared what really went down behind the scenes.
That iconic “Bohemian Rhapsody” sing-a-long? Yep, it took almost a full day to film.
“We were towing the car down the streets in Covina,” Spheeris told The Hollywood Reporter. “I had cameras all over the car because I needed the coverage for the title sequence. The guys were complaining after a while — and I don’t blame them — as they were head-banging for six or eight hours. Unless you’re Dave [Mustaine] from Megadeth, you’re not used to having your head bang about like that. So it was very uncomfortable for them and, I was asked to stop a couple of times. And the rest of history.”

Premiering on Feb. 14, 1992, Wayne’s World was a Valentine’s Day gift to heavy metal music. Starring Mike Myers as lo-fi cable host Wayne Campbell and Dana Carvey as his best friend/chimp/“with you as always” Garth Algar, the film followed in the tradition of The Blues Brothers, a Saturday Night Live skit that became a big screen buddy movie which had that box office “schwing.” Both films highlighted a particular music genre, and each brought on experts in the sonic reality.
Penelope Spheeris directed the cult punk rock/heavy metal masterpiece documentary film series The Decline of Western Civilization, and turned down the heavy metal satire This Is Spinal Tap because it wasn’t headbanging enough. She’d also caught the dark side of punk squatter slacking in the 1984 coming of age drama Suburbia. In directing Wayne’s World, Spheeris captures the subtle tension between a metal-head’s manic persona...

In honor of Women’s Equality Day (August 26), HBO Max announces the launch of its “So She Did” campaign, which champions the network’s female pioneers in front of and behind the camera.
The campaign kicks off with a film that celebrates the women who have been told they are “too much” and break all the rules to be who they authentically are.
The film features nine female-identifying talent: Jordan Alexander (“Gossip Girl”), Laura Donnelly (“The Nevers”), Susie Essman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Myha’la Herrold (“Industry”), Martha Plimpton (“Generation”), Lisa Ling (CNN’s “This is Life with Lisa Ling”), Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), Zion Moreno (“Gossip Girl”) and Eyricka Lanvin (“Legendary”).
Ling kicks off the promo video, saying “When we were little, they told us we could be anything.”
“But when we became everything, that was too much for some folks,” Alexander chimes in. “When we push the boundaries. Sometimes the boundaries push back.

Trailblazing director Penelope Spheeris has very few fucks left to give.
Spheeris first came on the scene with her Los Angeles punk rock documentary “Decline of Western Civilization,” followed by the disturbing punk drama “Suburbia” starring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea. But after directing several more independent films, huge success with “Wayne’s World,” and then some lightweight studio comedies, she basically lost faith in Hollywood. A run-in with the Weinsteins was one of the main catalysts, coupled with the industry’s general lack of interest in women filmmakers at the time.
For now, filmmaking is on the back burner while she finishes working on building two houses in L.A. and taking care of her foster kids. While making “Decline Part III,” she developed a deep connection with the runaway teens portrayed in the documentary, and started fostering children. She’s also writing a book about her wild ride in the business,...

The music documentary resurgence is alive and well and set to continue into 2021 with an insatiable appetite for weird and wild movies about bands and artists. The release over recent years of films such as Amy and Searching For Sugar Man kicked off a trend that has been amplified by interest from the streaming services.
This year, there have been fantastic rock docs including Laurel Canyon, The Beastie Boys Story, The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, The Go-Go’s, Creem: America’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll Magazine, The Changin’ Times of Ike White, Coachella: 20 Years In the Desert, The Bee Gees: How You Can Mend a Broken Heart, Blind Melon’s All I Can Say, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan, Song Exploder, Other Music and Zappa.
While there has been the regular churning of promotional films masquerading as documentaries, there have been more well researched deep dives into artists than ever before.

Welcome to this week’s Impact Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Penelope Spheeris here to whoop your ass. Schwing! Agnes Varda framed my kitty-cat and it died…of framing. We’ve got more build to Bound For Glory on the way, so get your wrestling cap on so…wrestling cap? Jesus Titty-Fukking…well, we’ve got six matches and no “The Whole F’n Show” with Rob Van Dam, even though it was advertised last week. Well, I guess Katie Forbes got her ass stuck in the elevator, so she couldn’t reach the stage…maybe? I don’t know. I hope Katie Forbes’s ass is okay and Impact Wrestling starts now. Also, Barry Scott, the magnificent announcer of Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling during its best period, has died. Barry Scott had a tremendous voice and the gravitas to match it.

Calling all members of the He-Man Woman Haters Club! It's been 26 years since director Penelope Spheeris collected the cutest group of child stars the '90s has ever seen for The Little Rascals, her big-screen adaptation of the classic Our Gang short films from the 1920s, '30s and '40s, centered on the adventures of a group of rambunctious neighborhood kids. And in doing so, she introduced a whole new generation to Spanky McFarland, his lovesick best friend Alfalfa Switzer, the object of his affection, Darla, and all the rest. While critics didn't exactly love the film when it was released on August 5, 1994, leaving it with just a 23 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 13...

Marty Cohen, a longtime editor and post-production chief who worked on more than a dozen Steven Spielberg films for Amblin and DreamWorks and whose producing credits include such hits as The Hunger Games and Godzilla, has died. He was 67.
An Amblin spokesperson said Cohen died May 17 of natural causes after a long battle with heart disease.
Marty, or Mendy, as he was affectionately called by his friends, abandoned studies in geology for a degree in communications from Queens College. He eventually landed a job with a courier company that offered to relocate him if he would help set up its offices in Los Angeles.
Cohen left the Big Apple and after being in L.A. for only a year, he quit for two reasons: one, he didn’t like working for a courier company; and two, it wasn’t movies.
He began his four-decade career in movies as a P.

I’m a sucker for documentaries about cinema. There’s just something about a doc looking inward on its own medium that compels me. Perhaps it’s just the cinephile in me, yearning to learn as much as possible about as many films as possible? That’s a possibility, but it also could just be how fun they tend to be. The new documentary series Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All Time, is definitely an example of that. Dropping tomorrow, part one of the three part series, Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All Time Part I – Midnight Madness, dives into just what makes a midnight movie, why they’re so special, and how a cult of fandom has formed around so many of them. It’s a deeply enjoyable experience that I recommend highly for fans of the genre. The film is a documentary, part one...

Metal Madman Ozzy Osbourne's life has not only been miraculous but disaster after bat-biting disaster too, as all metalheads know.
A&e Network’s genre-defining, Emmy Award-winning Biography is set to air the two-hour documentary, The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, exploring the many lives and decade-spanning career of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne.
Featuring exclusive interviews with Ozzy as he reflects on the many phases of his journey, the documentary will have its world premiere at SXSW in March and is set to air this summer on A&e.
And we have the emotionally charged sneak peak trailer right here.
Being banned from Texas for a decade for pissing on the Alamo, almost strangling wife Sharon to death, and losing the most revered hard rock guitarist in history to a tragic plane crash are only a few of the tragedies befallen the troubled music idol.
But as daughter Kelly Osbourne...

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? Writer/director Just Jaeckin (Lady Chatterley’s Lover) has concocted an almost unwieldy mix of Raiders of the Lost Ark,...

Forget the Golden Globes’ snub of women directed films in three top categories. When it comes to future growth, what matters is a significant increase in the number — and impact — of female-directed films this year.
Let’s not pretend that equal opportunity is close to reality. But the improvements in just one year are startling. In IndieWire’s 2018 year-end review, we noted that only two of the top domestic 50 grossers were directed by women. “Why this result after ‘Wonder Woman?’ Just figure the usual two year-plus lag for studios to respond after something hits big. The statistic should be improved next year.”
Indeed, improvement is right on schedule.
Women broke records.
Of the year’s approximately 125 wide studio releases, 19 had women as directors. That’s about 15% — hardly huge, but a massive jump over the four directors last year, or the nine in 2017.
Of these, 12 will be among the 100 highest-grossing films.

” I always had hopes of being a big star. But as you get older, you aim a little lower. “

A movie that the world is still catching up to, Jennie Livingston’s Paris is Burning looks at drag ball culture in Harlem in the 1980s. Calling to mind other great counterculture docs of the era, such as Penelope Spheeris’s The Decline of Western Civilization, Paris brings you into a world of voguing, rival houses, throwing shade, and all kinds of other cultural touchstones that have been slowly creeping into mainstream consciousness in the intervening 30 years. Indispensable.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.
