Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" began to be developed in the late 1990s, it was not treated with the respect one might expect for a follow-up to "The Simpsons." Where Groening's previous cartoon dealt in the classic sitcom setup of a dysfunctional family, "Futurama" was a harder sell, set in the year 3000 but in a world that largely looked like the late '90s. Only with aliens and spaceships.

Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had produced the excellent "King of the Hill" for Fox, giving the channel another animated sitcom hit. Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" was in development around the same time. All of these shows would become part of Fox's...

Some movies make for great TV shows: Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, and Fargo are just a few examples of recent, successful series that were born out of big-screen versions. Other movies do not—including Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Say Anything is latest subjected to the movie-to-tv transition, although it didn't last too long—after NBC announced plans for a half-hour comedy based on the 1989 movie, Say Anything director Cameron Crowe made his objections known and within 24 hours, the show was done. And, from the looks of a clip from the TV version of Ferris Bueller that a Reddit user dug up,...

We’re still a few years away from being able to hop a quick flight into space (after our self-driving car parks itself in the terminal), but if you want to feel like you’re standing on another planet, you should watch the Ferris Bueller TV show. Created for NBC’s lineup in 1990, it’s an odd pop cultural artifact that plays like a window into an alternative universe that somehow exists in our own without melting all physical laws into shoe-ruining mud. In it, Charlie Schlatter is Ferris Bueller, Jennifer Aniston is his pissy sister Jeannie, and Richard Riehle (before he became rich inventing the Jump To Conclusions Mat) is the stuffy Principal Ed Rooney. The natural response is that these are impostors, that you’re somehow being tricked, and that instinctive mindset colors everything that the show does. It would probably be even stranger if the characters felt right while not looking right, but...

During her stint on the 1990 TV adaption of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Jennifer Aniston had a brief love affair with a co-star and GQ Editor-in-Chief Jim Nelson is spilling the details.
Jim was a comedy writer’s assistant on the project and during his piece in the May 2014 issue of the men’s fashion magazine, he reveals that the “Friends” gal had a “brief, torrid” relationship with Charlie Schlatter during the show’s 13-episode run.
"To Aniston worshipers, I can offer little dirt," Nelson writes about the actress, who is now engaged to Justin Theroux. "She was lovely, kept to herself on the set, smoldering a bit like her outraged character, 17-year-old Jeannie Bueller. She was a brunette then, with none of Rachel Green's bob or self-possession.”

Another Jennifer Aniston Ex Unearthed: GQ Editor Spills on Her "Torrid Romance" With a Former Costar
Jennifer Aniston was obviously irresistible long before she was one of Hollywood's best Friends. In what basically amounts to an aside in a new essay about his days as a writer's assistant on the TV-sitcom circuit, GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson reveals that Aniston had a fling with Charlie Schlatter, who played the titular truant in the short-lived small-screen version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The show lasted for one season between 1990 and 1991, and it sounds as if that hookup--when Aniston was barely 21—didn't last for nearly as long. Bueller? Bueller? Long before Justin Theroux or even Brad Pitt swept Jennifer Aniston off her feet, another man romanced the then-future A-list superstar: Charlie Schlatter, her costar in the short-lived 1990 TV adaptation of the classic John Hughes film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Called simply Ferris Bueller, the NBC sitcom starred Schlatter in the title role (played memorably in the movie by Matthew Broderick), and a pre-Friends Aniston in the role of his sister, Jeannie (Jennifer Grey in the film). By the time you read this, I’ll be winging my way out of Atlanta and back home; but as I write, I am still in the thick of the exciting events of Dragon Con! I’ve had some great fun this weekend, and it’s not even over yet!
So, what the heck have I done this weekend? Seriously, guys, what did I do? It’s all kind of a blur. A really fun blur, mind you! But…let me think…
Oh yes! I interviewed Michael Rooker, Maurice Lamarche, Raphael Sbarge, Charlie Schlatter, and Jim Butcher, and checked in with John Dimaggio for more news on his awesome voice actor documentary (which I now have!) so look for those interviews and a documentary review coming your way soon!
I also had some experiences you can only have at Dragon Con—like looking over a food table with Richard Hatch...

The Delivery
This Blu-ray set includes all 26 episodes of the outstanding animated series that premiered in November 2010 on The Hub TV network. Our initial review of the Renegades Season One, Volume One DVD set (which you can read here) pointed out a lot that we liked about this new take on G.I. Joe, and some things that we didn't like. Thankfully, having taken in a full season of the show, the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
Utilizing the original characters introduced in the classic A Real American Hero animated series of the 1980s, this new spin takes a handful of core characters (Duke, Scarlett,...

The winter TV drought is over! A whole crop of new shows are premiering this week and many more new and old favorites are back from hiatus. Whatever you choose to watch this week, just don't let it be "Work It" on Tuesday ... otherwise ABC might be tempted to make more.

Winemaker Ben Flajnik is the lucky (if dull) bachelor seeking a second chance at love after falling short of winning Ashley Herbert's heart during last season's "The Bachelorette." But which 18 will make it through to next week?

If you've seen one body-switching movie, you've seen them all, right? Well, that's not necessarily the case, for there are a couple of unique exceptions to the rule (as discussed below). However, most of these movies are quite alike and generally have to do with the aftermath of some mystical process gone terribly wrong. These films are often comedic in tone but would also hope to communicate some philosophical message about identity, yet they mostly succeed in wallowing in their own poorly scripted, slapstick-laden juices. While the so-called "Golden Age" of the body-switching movie reached a fever pitch in the mid-to-late 1980s, studios still can't resist popping them out on occasion to earn a quick buck. This weekend's The Change-Up is merely the latest edition, so let's just have a quick review of the body-switching movie, shall we?

This list was originally posted to Spout Blog on April 15, 2009. It has been republished in anticipation of the latest body swap comedy, "The Change-Up," opening this Friday By Christopher Campbell Despite having a title that reminds us of that George Burns-Charlie Schlatter role-reversal movie from the ‘80s, "17 Again" is not in fact part of the body swap genre. Rather, it’s more like "Peggy Sue Got Married" without the time travel. It’s also like a backwards "Big," a movie many people mistakenly assign to the genre, which more technically includes such classics as "The Hot Chick," "Dream a…...

Body-switching comedies are one of those ideas that Hollywood just won't stop producing. The sub-genre (if we can call it that) had a heyday (if we can call it that) of father and son body-switching in the 1980s starting with 1987's Like Father, Like Son (starring Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron) and followed in 1988 by Vice Versa (starring Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage) and, in a real change of pace, 18 Again! (starring George Burns and Charlie Schlatter as a grandson and grandfather combo). Also in 1988 was Big, which had a twelve-year-old kid switching bodies with his older self (Tom Hanks).
Jason Bateman was all too-aware of the body-switching deluge, and admitted to Entertainment Weekly (print edition) that he suffered a "Really?" moment when first presented with the idea of joining the movie.

When I was growing up, there were three VHS tapes that were very important to me. These were tapes that my family owned. Because I was so intimately familiar with them, my pre-adolescent brain assumed everyone else knew about them as well and watched them all constantly. The first tape was Top Gun. You’ve heard of that one. The second and third tapes, though. Oh, man. It’s so weird I thought everyone knew about them. The second tape was a movie staring George Burns and Charlie Schlatter called 18 Again. In this movie, Jack (George Burns) makes a wish on his 81st birthday that he was 18 again. Then he gets into a car accident with his 18 year old grandson, David (Charlie Schlatter) and switches bodies with him. Then Jack totally has to dance and sing a song about slutty girls for Red Buttons to prove he is actually Jack.

It's always fun to see classic TV show characters pop up -- if it's handled well. The appearance of Carol (Marcia Wallace) from The Bob Newhart Show as one of the secretaries on Murphy Brown comes to mind as one that was well done.
